Bloodmobile in Richmond Beach on Saturday

Give blood - get juice and cookies

By Tom Petersen

The mobile unit from Bloodworks Northwest (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) will be at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW this Saturday, April 25, from 10am until 4pm.

The Richmond Beach neighborhood drive got the "Bloodworks era" off to a rousing start in February with 26 donors. 18 of those had made appointments online to ensure a quick in-and-out, but the bloodmobile had no trouble taking the eight walk-ups that day.

The drive is always looking for "new blood," and especially encourages people who have donated once or twice in the past few years, or young people who donated when in high school, to come back to the neighborhood event and make it an every-other-month routine.

Shorecrest - Shorewood boys soccer Wednesday

Undefeated and top-ranked Shorecrest (7-0, 10-0-1) squares off against crosstown rival Shorewood (5-2, 6-3-2) Wednesday night at Shoreline Stadium (map) in a Western Conference 3A/2A boys soccer match. Game time is 7pm.

There will be more on the line than there was when the two teams first met this season, when the Scots and T-Birds played to a scoreless tie March 24 in a non-league game.

Coach Drew Thompson's Scots are a senior-laden team and they have outscored their opposition by a 32-3 count, including 8 shutouts.

The Shorecrest varsity takes a 7-0 Wesco 3A/2A record (10-0-1 overall) into the Wednesday game with Shorewood (5-2, 6-3-2).

Shorecrest, the only 2A team in the conference, already has clinched a place in the Northwest District 2A tournament. The Scots needed to place 11th or better in the 13-team conference to qualify for district play.

Bill Wilkins has a young T-Birds squad that enjoys an 11-8 scoring advantage. Shorewood stands third among Wesco 3A teams. The top seven Wesco 3A teams qualify for the Northwest District 3A tournament along with either the No. 8 Wesco 3A team or Ferndale of the Northwest 3A/2A/1A conference, depending on conference records.

With the schools on spring break, it could be an opportune time for local soccer fans to bring the whole family out to enjoy this great, friendly rivalry.

Junior varsity teams from the two schools play at 5pm.

Beautiful birds: Doug Parrott photography

Snow Geese landing

Christine Southwick's For the Birds columns have been greatly enhanced by the beautiful photos taken by Doug Parrott and we are very grateful for his generous sharing.

Christine says, "Doug Parrott's photos capture the essence of the birds he photographs. His patience and clear portraits create a sense of birds that add to written descriptions. That's why I so often use his pictures with my articles."

He doesn't just get photos of birds - he gets birds in action - snow geese landing - baby birds tucked in their mother's feathers - hummingbirds feeding - a bald eagle in flight.

Readers have asked where to purchase these photos and we are happy to share the information.

CORRECTION: Home improvement workshop is Tuesday, April 28

A previous edition had the incorrect date. The Home Improvement Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at Shoreline City Hall.

Shoreline homeowners get an individual consult with
City staff the the Home Improvement workshop

At last report there were only a few places left for individual consults in the second City of Shoreline Home Improvement event scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 6:00 to 8:00pm, City Hall lobby, 17500 Midvale Ave N.

The events pair homeowners with city experts to discuss and guide plans for remodels, subdivision of property, driveway, drainage, deck, or tree projects. Depending on the question, the homeowner might meet with an inspector or other staff expert to discuss their specific project. Staff resources available by appointment included zoning planners, building plan reviewers, and a drainage review engineer. Bring your plans.

Drop-ins are welcome to visit the info tables

There are tables with general resources, staffed by people who can answer general questions, such as a local designer, a local contractor, a credit union, a master gardener, and a rain garden rebate program representative. The master gardener and rain garden tables were very popular with the residents.

If you drop in without a reservation, you might get lucky - there were cancellations at the March 31 event and some drop ins were able to get individual sessions.

If you have a reservation, you have a one-on-one consult

According to someone who participated in the first workshop earlier this month,
Overall, it was great. Being able to ask my dumb questions of the inspector and to get good answers was worth the price of admission (I know it was free). Especially liked the greeter.
Seriously, I think it was one of the best ideas to come out of City Hall in a long time. To the average homeowner, going to City Hall and talking to a building inspector ranks up there with 4 root canals and a double bypass on the same day. You made the experience valuable. Keep it up.

Visit the home improvement website to sign up and reserve a time slot.

New priorities for County’s Children and Youth

King County Councilmember
Rod Dembowski
In January of 2014, the Metropolitan King County Council unanimously passed legislation calling for the development of a Youth Action Plan to set King County’s priorities for serving its young people. The Youth Action Plan (YAP) presented to the Council recently calls for a new set of priorities for how the County serves its infants to 24 year olds.

“Kids should be empowered to achieve their full potential, not be held back by their circumstances,” said Councilmember Rod Dembowski, who sponsored the legislation calling for the creation of a Youth Action Plan.
“The Youth Action Plan represents the best thinking of children and youth advocates countywide to ensure that all kids in King County can achieve their full potential. The plan provides a blueprint to reform how we invest in kids at King County, and lights the path for potential new investments of resources to achieve the plan's vision for our kids.”

The Council initiated the development of the YAP, with the goal of ensuring that King County’s Strategic Plan objective to “promote opportunities for all communities and individuals to realize their full potential,” is applied to the County’s children and youth and reflected across all County departments, programs, and initiatives. The goal of the YAP was to set the County’s priorities for an accountable, integrated delivery system of services to achieve the best outcomes for children, families, youth and young adults.

While the task force presenting the YAP found that King County has much to be proud of regarding its support for youth and children, its recommendations point to a need for new priorities and a better way of doing business. The fundamental principles outlined in the YAP are the first indicator that the County must change its current practices – policy development, services, and programming should intentionally incorporate youth and the voices of the people impacted in authentic and meaningful ways.

Additional recommendations include investing early to shift the pendulum from reactive to proactive funding, revisiting current allocations of dedicated funding streams, and utilizing the County’s regional role to act as collaborator and convener.

The Council’s Committee of the Whole will hold the first hearing on the recommendations of the Youth Action Plan Task Force at its Wednesday, May 20 meeting.

Review: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum….

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, By Larry Gelbart and Stephen Sondheim, Directed by Martin Mackenzie, Edmonds Driftwood Players, April 17-May 10, 2015

Review by Victoria Gilleland

You might guess that Forum is set in Rome 2000 years ago, but not realize what wild and crazy entertainment this musical comedy offers! Pseudolus, a slave, tries to win his freedom by helping his young master, Hero, win the hand of a beautiful, but dim-witted courtesan named Philia. There are cases of mistaken identity, twisted plots, acrobats, an outlandish chase scene and a fake funeral all expertly delivered in vaudevillian style with lots of laughs.

This hilarious comedy is full of characters so aptly named and so extreme in their personalities and demeanor that match those names, that the audience knows they’ve met these very people before. They may even have seen them looking back at them in the mirror from time to time!

As Director Mackenzie says, “Hysterium is hysterical. Hero is the hero. Philia is beautiful. Domina is domineering. Pseudolus is …. well …. not very forthright.” These characters are fabulous, but one of my favorites is Miles Gloriosus, a swaggering soldier who marches into Rome declaring “I am a parade!” He is accompanied by a troop of four “soldiers” who are extremely creative and do a fabulous job entertaining the audience with their zany antics alongside Gloriosus and in diverse roles throughout the play.

The music will be familiar to many and includes “Comedy Tonight,” “Lovely,” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid.”

Plan a night out at Edmonds Driftwood Players. Even if something funny doesn’t happen to you on the way there, I guarantee rollicking, light hearted entertainment when you arrive!

Edmonds Driftwood Players 306 Main Street, Edmonds 98020, 425-774-9600.

Tickets online. Run ends May 10, 2015.

Medicare will no longer use Social Security numbers - but it will take eight years to implement

From the Office of the Insurance Commissioner

Concerned about the rising prevalence and sophistication of identity theft, most private health insurance companies have abandoned the use of Social Security numbers to identify individuals. The federal government even forbids private insurers to use the numbers on insurance cards when they provide medical or drug benefits under contract with Medicare.

But Medicare itself has continued the practice, imprinting Social Security numbers on more than 50 million benefit cards despite years of warnings from government watchdogs that it placed millions of people at risk for financial losses from identity theft.

That is about to change, after President Obama signed a bill last week that will end the use of those numbers on Medicare cards.

The main purpose of the law, adopted with broad bipartisan support, was to overhaul the way doctors are paid for treating Medicare patients. But it makes other changes as well. One section that received little attention says Social Security account numbers must not be “displayed, coded or embedded on the Medicare card.”

In his budget for 2016, Mr. Obama requested $50 million as a down payment “to support the removal of Social Security numbers from Medicare cards” — a step that federal auditors and investigators had been recommending for more than a decade.

Local artist's mural at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian is open to the public

Lisa Meltvedt Koontz finishes details on her
three panel mural at LFP Presbyterian Church

Local artist Lisa Meltvedt Koontz finished an extensive three-panel mural of the life of Jesus on the walls at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church just in time for Easter.

Koontz meticulously researched her wall-sized painting which contains architecture, plants and clothing of first century Palestine.

It is her statement of faith as well as a gift to the LFP community and specifically to the children of Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church and the Pepitas Bi-lingual Preschool who have enjoyed watching the painting for the last two years.

The mural is open to the public and can be viewed during business hours and on Sundays at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church, 17440 Brookside Blvd. NE, Lake Forest Park, 206-364-2712. Ask the receptionist at the front desk to show you this mural that culminates a triptych of stunning murals depicting the entire life of Christ.

Lisa Koontz is known to many local students through her work as an Art Docent at Brookside Elementary as well as through Lake Forest Park Church’s Children’s Summer Art program.

The mural is true to the time period in all details

Lisa has spent years studying the art of French society painter, James Tissot, and her murals are informed by his style. Tissot, who gave up painting fashionable ladies after a religious conversion experience, researched his paintings by traveling to Egypt, Syria and Palestine in the late 1880’s because European artists before his time had almost exclusively depicted the people of the Bible as looking like Europeans in their native costumes and villages. Tissot’s paintings were highly controversial. Lisa has taken pains to include meticulously researched images of Semitic peoples, middle eastern flora and fauna, architecture and garments compassionately rendered with great skill, in warm, glowing colors.

Lisa is associated with The Gage Academy of Art, The Pratt Institute, private workshops and The Brig Studio Artists.
