For the Birds: Red-winged Blackbirds Love Cromwell Park

1% Public Art at Cromwell Park

By Christine Southwick

Have you been to Cromwell Park lately? Since its redesign in 2010 to include public art, improved play areas, and a storm water detention area for Thornton Creek, cattails have grown thick in the wetland areas. Native plants surround these wet areas, and create secure spaces for birds and other wildlife to raise their young. There are walking paths around the detention area for our viewing pleasure while still keeping a safe space wild enough for birds.

This weekend I saw at least four male and six female Red-winged Blackbirds who have come back and claimed this area for breeding and raising their young. The males singing their loud “Konkoree” from an exposed branch or top of a cattail in order to show off their red and yellow shoulder epaulettes (which they fluff dramatically) are so flashy that the females almost go unnoticed.

Males usually win at least two females, with the overly impressive male having up to 15 females. The females look like large dark, thin-ish striped sparrows — all the better to hide in amongst the light and dark stems of cattails where they expertly lash together their nests for three to four eggs.

Stand still and watch the cattails and you may be able to see these females flitting around, flying up and then quickly down while making loud notes. I saw one of the females collecting nesting material and flying repeatedly to the same spot, undoubtedly the site for her soon-to-be nest.

Native plants and water create good habitat for all, and are a restful way to control flooding from heavy rains. Go visit Cromwell Park (18030 Meridian Ave N), stay out of the waters, and listen to the Red-winged Blackbirds singing, and even some frogs croaking. You will probably see some Mallards in the open water. Anna’s Hummingbirds and other birds, such as chickadees, use this park at times.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the time when I hear Marsh Wrens or Common Yellowthroats. Then I will know that this storm water detention area has become a true wetland.

Note:  Echo Lake here in Shoreline, and Greenlake in Seattle are also good places to find Red-winged Blackbirds.

Dara Solliday, encaustic painting
Sonya Stockton, sculpture

April 29 - July 24, 2015

ARTIST RECEPTION & OPEN HOUSE:
Thursday, April 30, 5:30 – 7:00pm

Shoreline City Hall. 17500 Midvale Ave. N Monday to Friday 9 - 5

Caitlin Brookins - Nostos, Eternity
Silver Gelatin Print

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Caitlin creates works of art through photography, printmaking, painting, and drawing. The photographs in the show evoke the Old Hollywood feel, a dark romantic spin with a turn of the century nudge. They relate to the history of portraiture and the context it brings, through the classic and iconic oval formatting of portraits and figure studies. Caitlin is a recent BFA recipient from Cornish College of the Arts. She is now exhibiting in many local spaces and beyond.

David L Friend
The Improbable Conceptions of Mother Goose on a Plate
Acrylic

David is a self taught artist, who discovered the world of oil painting at age 11 and has never lost his love for painting. He sees art as an invitation to investigate what’s all around him and translate the interesting or important parts into a visual medium using shapes, lines and colors. David has showed his work widely around the Puget Sound, like at the Ryan James Fine Arts Gallery, and Fogdog Gallery. He is in numerous private collections, and has been featured in Split Lip Magazine.

Laura Craft - Phases
digital print

Laura is an architect and artist. She started devoting considerable energy to digital printmaking in 2013. Her work explores the ambiguous relationship between positive and negative space, foreground and background, which can create movement (rotation, flipping) as the viewer’s eye seeks to resolve the composition. Her volumetric and spatial pieces start with a blank “canvas.” In other works, found forms, such as calligraphic characters, are stripped of their original meaning and used as armatures for color, textural, and spatial play. She has shown regularly in the Northwest, including the Mercer Island Gallery and ParklaneGallery.

Dara Solliday - Regrade 14
Encaustic Mixed Media on Panel

Dara’s work combines architectural images of land pattern, structure, and urban development into multi-layered views of home and landscape. She reconstructs historic images of land projects in paint and wax, incorporating found objects, text and schematic visuals into heavily worked surfaces, referencing a construction site. Dara has exhibited throughout the US, including the Museum of Northwest Art; the Hockaday Museum of Art in Montana; Gray Gallery and Emerge Gallery in North Carolina, Pun(c)tuation Gallery, Room 104 Gallery, Linda Hodges Gallery, CoCA, and Kate Alkarni Gallery.

Sonya Stockton - The Provider
Concrete, polyurethane, and shoes

Sonya uses found object sculpture to reveal the underlying strangeness of our connection to the material world. She explores the absurd but profound nature of the unfolding story we write with our objects. Sonya received a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts, and is the Chair of the Board for the artist-run Gallery 110. Having exhibited widely in Seattle such as the Vera Project, Crawl Space, CoCA, and Faire Gallery, she has also shown work at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago and the Tastes Like Chicken art space in New York.

Shoreline City Hall is located at 17500 Midvale Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. For more information contact the Arts Council at (206) 417- 4645 or info@shorelinearts.net

2015 Million STEP Challenge at Paramount School Park

The Million Step Challenge at Paramount School Park is returning in May with an even greater challenge for the Shoreline Community.

For 2015, the City of Shoreline and Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association will be measuring the distance we collectively walk during the month of May with the goal of reaching 2,600 miles -the distance from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Trail has been made popular recently through the Oscar nominated movie “Wild”, and although most of us will never have the opportunity to walk the trail on our own, we can see how many people, steps, and days it would take for us as a whole community to complete the journey.

Participants of all ages are encouraged to visit Paramount School Park between May 1 and 31 and log the number of laps they complete each time on the paper tracking form located at the park (or online). Current standing and totals will be posted weekly and prizes will be awarded to top steppers at the closing event on Sunday, May 31.

The park is located at 15298 8th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155 in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood.

Million Step Challenge Opening Event and Annual Ridgecrest Neighborhood Plant Exchange and Elections – Saturday, May 2, 9:00am.

To kick off the challenge, the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association is inviting the community to the Million Step Challenge Opening Event. A warm up and inaugural lap will be led by Crossfit Hailstorm with energizing snacks and giveaways from Fire and Earth Kitchen and Iora Primary Care, all local businesses.

Immediately after the opening event, the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association will hold its Annual Plant Exchange and Executive Board Elections. People are encouraged to bring extra cuttings or divided plants from their garden and trade them with each other. Recology Cleanscapes will be on site presenting a clinic on recycling and composting. More information about the Plant Exchange here.

Some voters can register through Monday to vote in April 28 special election

By Evan Smith

New Washington voters can register through Monday to vote in the April 28 special election, but they must register in person at either the King County Elections office in Renton or the county voter registration annex at the county administration building in downtown Seattle.

The last day for current Washington voters to file a change of address or for anyone to register by mail or online was March 30.

The only item on local ballots is the King County property tax levy to replace the county emergency public safety radio network.

Voters who register in person can either get a ballot by mail or vote on accessible machines at the county elections office if they choose to wait for their registration to be validated through the state voter registration database, a wait that requires a few minutes.

A 24-hour ballot drop box is open at the Lake Forest Park city hall, 17425 Ballinger Way N.E. It is one of 10 drop boxes around King County.

The deadline for voters to change voting addresses for the Aug. 4 primary election or to register by mail or online is July 6.

Evan Smith can be reached at schsmith@frontier.com.

Lake Forest Park Council takes position to support Public Safety Emergency Radio Network measure

At its meeting on April 9, 2015, the Lake Forest Park City Council took a position in favor of King County Proposition 1, a proposal on the April 28, 2015 special election ballot that, if approved, would provide funding for a new, upgraded regional emergency radio network.

Council received information on the subject at its March 26, 2015 regular meeting, and held a public meeting on April 9, following the statutorily approved process by which a governing body may consider taking a position on a ballot measure.

Replacement of the aging and obsolete emergency radio system, substantially completed in 1997, has been in the planning stages for the last several years. The new system, known as PSERN, the Public Safety Emergency Radio Network, is planned for use by all agencies, public or private, which provide emergency response services within King County.

Benefits to Lake Forest Park include a better signal in more places, replacement of old end-user radios, and enhanced interoperability with Snohomish County and the Washington State Patrol.

Lake Forest Park Police Chief Stephen Sutton had this to say about the ballot measure,

“Thanks to King County for making sure this was on its radar and for working proactively to come up with a modern, technologically updated public safety communications system that will be of benefit to the citizens of King County.
Thanks, also, to the Lake Forest Park City Council for taking a position to support the measure, which, in the end, benefits the residents of the City of Lake Forest Park.”

Response to letter of concern about Aurora turn lane

Glen Lagrou expressed his concerns about the turn lane closure on Aurora in his letter published yesterday. Today, he received a response explaining the reason for the closure.

Hello Glen,
Thank you for contacting us with your concerns. You’re correct that there is currently no work in the area of 244th and Aurora. However, the right turn lane is closed due to safety concerns because the road configuration on Aurora has changed from the original conditions. The traffic shift transitions back to the existing northbound lanes just past the right turn lane, north of the Aurora and 244th intersection. If the right turn lane on 244th Street was kept open, it would create a very dangerous merge for the right turn traffic with the traffic on the Aurora. Drivers attempting to make the right turn would have trouble seeing cars quickly approaching from the left because the sight line would be blocked from our construction barriers.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but safety takes precedence in these conditions. Until we are able to safely open this lane up, motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes to avoid the congestion.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call the 24-hour hotline at (206) 801-2485 or email aurora@shorelinewa.gov.

Glen says that the response makes sense. "The turn lane closure is less about moving traffic through 205th and more about safety issues caused by lane revisions on Aurora. I wish it wasn't the case. With heavy construction on 200th there isn't an alternate route that isn't a half mile away."

Plastic bag whale comes to college for Earth Week

On Friday, April 10 a 32-foot gray whale constructed of 9,000 plastic bags and other plastic waste arrived on the Shoreline campus where it will be housed in the PUB lobby until April 30 as part of the campus-wide Earth Week celebration.

The project is the brainchild of local artist and Solid Waste educator Carrie Ziegler, who designed the art piece to teach youth participants and the community at large about how plastic waste affects the environment.

Ziegler was inspired to design the project when, in 2010, scientists found over 30 plastic bags and other debris in the stomach of a gray whale that washed ashore in Seattle. Ziegler hopes the whale will inspire people to take action to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bags.

Since its debut at the 2013 Procession of the Species Celebration in Olympia, the whale has been on display at various institutions around Puget Sound. Shoreline was lucky enough to secure the project for display during Earth Week, a celebration with myriad campus-wide activities aimed at raising awareness of the toll human activity can take on our environment.

Robert Hayden, Shoreline’s Earth Week advisor, said “We are extremely excited to house this admirable project during the month of April. Sustainability is one of the bottom line values of Shoreline, and this project will help raise awareness of and further that value.”

Construction of the whale was a collaborative art project between Thurston County Solid Waste, the Procession of the Species, the YMCA’s after school programs, Cascadia Research Collective and several Thurston County schools. Over 800 kindergarten through twelfth-grade students helped create the whale from plastic bags and other plastic trash.

Participants in the project braided 9,000 plastic bags into ropes to make up the whale’s left side. The right side of the whale displays a skeleton including ribs, spine and skull made of plastic debris and Styrofoam collected from local schools and the community.

According to the Center for Marine Conservation, plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups. The Center states that plastic waste outweighs surface zooplankton in the central North Pacific by a factor of 6 to 1.

Recology CleanScapes facilitated the whale’s migration to Shoreline after acquiring the whale from Thurston County this past fall.

Recology CleanScapes has collected recycling and garbage at Shoreline Community College since becoming Shoreline’s solid waste hauler in 2008.

Elliott Okantey, Waste Zero Specialist at Recology CleanScapes, said “Displaying the Plastic Whale Project is an exciting opportunity to support the College’s Earth Week 2015 programming, and to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship in Shoreline and beyond.”

April 28th Special Election Ballot on King County Emergency Radio Network

Ballots are now in hand for the April 28 special election. There is only one issue on the ballot: whether to approve a property tax levy to replace the King County emergency public safety radio network.

The campaign is co-chaired by King County Sheriff John Urquhart and new Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole.

Proposition 1 would allow King County to update what they consider a "dangerously outdated emergency communications system essential for effective police, fire, Medic One, and other emergency first responders."

The current emergency radio network was constructed in 1992, has gaps in coverage in populated areas, and was designed to serve a much smaller area.

Public safety officials say that the outdated system puts the public and first responders at risk.

The proposed ordinance would allow King County to levy an additional $.07 per $1,000 of assessed home value. If approved, it will cost the average homeowner in King County just over $2 per month to fund this network - "a nominal fee for the added safety and security it will provide to all King County residents" say supporters.

“Our communities are safer when our emergency personnel have reliable tools,” said Campaign Co-chair Kathleen O’Toole.  “The emergency radio network is used daily.  It is a critical tool that is used by Fire, Police, Medic One, and EMS to do their jobs on every call, every day. It is essential that we support Prop. 1.”

The King County Council passed Ordinance 17993 on March 2nd, 2015 putting Prop. 1 and the essential emergency radio network improvements on the April 28th Special Election ballot. More information here.

In The Garden Now …. Western Skunk Cabbage

Swamp Lantern

Text and photo by Victoria Gilleland

Like the idea of going native? Do you have shade and moist soil in your garden? Well, then, consider planting Skunk Cabbage or Swamp Lantern as it is sometimes called, one of our earliest blooming wild flowers. This one is lighting up the forest in our Lake Forest Park neighborhood.

The intense yellow flowers emerge before the leaves, often in February or early March and even through the snow. Flowers are frequently seen well into April. The plant gets its Skunk Cabbage moniker because of the stinky odor it emits when either the leaves or flowers are bruised or crushed. The plant can grow to 5 feet high and 2 feet wide under ideal conditions.

Take a close look at additional members of this native plant community living in harmony with the skunk cabbage in the photo above: Western Sword Fern, Lady Fern, Piggy Back Plant, and Horse Tail. All are growing contentedly within inches of each other in the damp shade. A moist shady place in the garden would provide the perfect site for Skunk Cabbage and its native cohorts. So consider going native next time you plant something in a moist area of your garden!

Botanical Name:  Lysichiton americanum
