Report of Armed Male on School Grounds

Statement from the King County Sheriff's Department

Incident Happened Before Elementary School Was Open

Shoreline: At 7:20am this morning Shoreline Police responded to the report of an armed male seen on the property of Meridian Park Elementary school in the 17400 block of Meridian Ave North. A school employee reported he had been making a delivery at the school when he saw a male that he believed had some type of long gun.

This unknown male made a statement that alluded to him going to all of the schools. There was nothing else said. The employee took this as a threat and he went into the school and called 9-1-1.

The elementary school was immediately placed in lockdown. School hadn’t started, and there were only a few children on site. A search of the school grounds and buildings didn’t find anything amiss. A K9 unit from Seattle Police attempted a track with negative results. Other Shoreline schools were placed in lockdown and officers and deputies were sent to every school in the district to check for the suspect.

The school district made the decision to close all district schools for the day. Shoreline Police, Lake Forest Police, and King County Sheriff’s deputies assisted at each of these schools to make sure all children were safe and accounted for.

The only description of the suspect is a male of unknown age and unknown race. He was described as wearing a dark hoodie with the hood up and camouflage pants.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. No suspect has been identified or arrested. The investigation will continue and anyone with information on this incident is urged to call the King County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 206- 296-3311.

WeatherWatcher: Foggy weather ahead

Forecast
December's Highlights
Last Week's Data

Forecast: When it rains it pours, as the old saying goes. After our weekend of heavy rain we are heading back into a short dry spell to last us until about Thursday evening - Friday. Due to the high pressure forming for the mid-week there may be a temperature inversion that could get strong enough to generate locally dense fog, and yes, burn bans. Temperatures will stick to the low 50's and upper 40's for most of the week. A renewed storm track will show up Friday bringing the return of rain and the lift of any burn bans through the end of next weekend. Some cooler air may move in as well at that time, but don't fear, not cold enough for that for the letter S word yet.

December Highlights: December was one of the most active weather months we've had in over 2 years, a month to be remembered as the month of extremes. The month begin with an ending cold snap from November. Then transitioned to a stormy and windy pattern, to rain, then ending with more cold air and record high surface air pressure. We also went from having low temperatures in the lower 20's to having a high temperature of 65°F, which by the way, broke the all time high temperature record for the entire month at Sea-Tac (where official weather data is recorded for the Seattle area).

The temperature on December 10th was very much the same right here in Shoreline with it at 64.6°F (rounding to 65°F).  Just one day later, the strongest winds in two years moved through our area with gusts peaking up to 52 mph causing wide spread power outages throughout Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. We had several other winds that were not quite as strong but noted.

We then had a series of rain storms followed with our third arctic attack of the season to end the month. During our arctic attack at the end of the month, another record was set on December 30th. This was a more interesting one as it was Seattle's all time high pressure record that was broken. The Shoreline Weather Station recorded a high pressure of 30.327 inHg (Inches of Mercury). Now remember this is not sea level adjusted, the weather station is at an elevation of 373 feet above sea level. At Sea-Tac the official record I was able to dig up was 30.84 inHg at 11am, December 30, 2014.

Rainfall total was close to the middle of the road for Decembers since 2008. December 2010 had 12.06 inches, December 2012 came in at 8.69 inches. Interestingly enough 2010 was a moderate El Nino year, and 2012 was a mild El Nino year, this year we are skirting on the edge of neutral and El Nino (minor if any El Nino is existing right now).

A Darkened Intersection December 11, 2014, caused by wind.

Last Week's Data:
High Temperature: 47.7°F (Saturday)
Low Temperature: 24.8°F (Tuesday)
Rainiest day: 0.08 inches (Tied on Saturday and Sunday)
Total rainfall: 0.16 inches
Warmest day: 42.9°F (Saturday)
Coldest day: 29.0°F (Tuesday)
Average temperature: 35.0°F
Station historic average: 38.3°F

Shoreline Police seek help to identify serial burglar

Shoreline Police are seeking your help to identify a serial burglar who struck the Parkwood and Meridian Park neighborhoods between December 29 and January 3.

The burglaries occurred in the late afternoon to early evening hours. Most of the burglaries were to unsecured homes. If you saw or heard anything suspicious, call 206-296-3311.

In an article posted to the Shoreline Police website in 2013, Shoreline Police share information from a different serial burglar who was in custody, thanks to an alert neighbor who called 911. When asked how he chose houses to hit, he provided this information:

Carports – If the suspect didn’t see a car in the carport he assumed no one was home
Doorbell or Knock – The suspect would almost always ring the doorbell or knock on the door. If someone answered, he would make up an excuse, such as he was looking for someone. If no one answered he would prowl the house looking for unlocked doors or windows. If he didn’t find an unlocked door or window he would force his way into the home.
Dogs – The suspect avoided houses with dogs.
Tall hedges and fences – The suspect targeted houses with tall hedges or fences as they afforded him privacy and more time to break in.

Being a victim of a residential burglary can be very traumatic as it happens where we should feel safest –our homes. A large number of such burglaries could easily be avoided. Every month, Police see 30 to 50% of burglaries in Shoreline homes being non-forced entries where burglars enter homes via unlocked doors or windows. A simple sweep of your home before leaving to make sure all of your doors and windows are locked can go a long way in protecting your home from a burglar.

One of the best ways to protect against burglaries, aside from locking your doors and windows, is to watch for suspicious activity in your neighborhood and be a good neighbor.

Celebrations: Frank Workman celebrates his first grandchild

Frank Workman and Emma

By Frank Workman

A month ago my son Tim and his lovely wife Jena had a beautiful and healthy baby girl named Emma Roo Workman.

Blessed events call for reflection, and our flight down to San Diego to spend the holidays with them afforded such an opportunity.

I got to thinking about all the different names my son has been called.

Before he was born, while just a bun-in-the-oven, we called him PeeWee.

His Birth Certificate says Timothy Marcus. (As did I on those occasions when he took a called strike three to kill a rally.)

As a pre-schooler, he went by Timmy a lot.

Once he started school, he was just plain Tim. Although many nights when I tucked him into bed and kissed him good night, I called him Champ.

Tim was a baseball player, and as he got older, teammates affectionately called him Timmy.

He wore uniform #20, and was frequently referred to as Two-Oh on the ballfield.

When he was still living at home during his high school days, I would return his salutation of  'Hey Pop' with a 'Hey Boy' back to him.

When he got off to college and then law school, my greeting changed to 'Hey Son'.

As I reached for the gift tag to attach to the present, I paused. A lifetime's worth of events flashed by.

FROM   and   TO    read the tag.

I thought about it for a minute.

I wrote 'Emma', as if she herself was giving the book to him.

I took a breath.

After TO, I wrote 'Daddy'.
