Arlington's balanced scoring is too much for SC girls

ARLINGTON      13   19   11   19   62
SHORECREST     6    11    7    14   38

The Shorecrest girls basketball team proved to be generous hosts Friday night in a 62-38 home loss against Arlington.

The Scots' 34 turnovers against the methodical Eagles proved too much to overcome, as did the Eagles' ridiculously balanced scoring. All eleven players scored for Arlington, led by Gracie Casteneda's 12 points, on four 3-pointers.

Shorecrest, on the other hand, got scoring from only four players. Worrie Njadoe had 14, Jazzlyn Owens 11, Julia Strand 7, and Sheridan Stephenson 6.

Shorewood wrestling results Dec 10

Shorewood went up to Snohomish High School Wednesday night to wrestle and continued their challenging non-league schedule with matches against Snohomish and Mt. Vernon.

Wrestling their fifth and sixth dual matches plus a tournament and missing three key varsity wrestlers proved to be too much for the young Thunderbirds.

Opening the evening against Mt. Vernon Shorewood went out to hold a slim 25-15 lead after eight weight classes with the help of victories by seniors An Nguyen, Kaden Carpenter, Andrew Chum and Erca Erdenebayer.

However, the Bulldogs from the north would dominate the lower weights to take an insurmountable 36-25 lead before senior Erik Harris-Uldall collected his third consecutive pin since dropping to 138 pounds for the final score of 35-31.

Against Snohomish the final score of 59-15 doesn’t reflect how tough the Thunderbirds wrestled. With seven out of eleven varsity Shorewood wrestlers being underclassmen Snohomish used patience and experience to grind out close victory after close victory. Seniors Thunderbirds Andrew Chum, Erik Harris-Uldall and Erca Erdenebayer each won to score all of the team’s points.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational at Decatur High School.

CORRECTION: Local author speaking at Third Place Books this Saturday, 6:30pm

Pam Stucky
Looking for a great gift for tweens or teens for the holidays— or for yourself? Or just looking for something fun to do Saturday night?

Local author Pam Stucky will be at Third Place Books Saturday evening, 6:30pm on December 13 in the bookstore Den, for a book reading/ signing of her latest book, The Universes Inside the Lighthouse, a Young Adult (YA) sci-fi adventure. And remember, YA books are not just for kids! People of all ages are already enjoying Pam's imaginative and fun new novel.

Reviewers are saying:

"Reminded me of Christopher Pike’s wonderful series Spooksville (one of my all time favourites growing up) .... The plot was full of twists and turns ... it was suspenseful and exciting, a perfect children’s adventure story and a compelling read. I would recommend this to anyone with teenagers that enjoy adventure stories of any kind, and I can't wait for the second in the series." — Alison, Chapter One Reviews

"I never grew tired of seeing what [the author] might come up with next.... What would it be like to visit other planets? As someone who has often wondered about this, I was intrigued by all of the places that these characters see. Earth is unique in many different ways. It was nice to see this subtly acknowledged before the author went on to show the amazing range of possibilities.I would have liked to visit (almost) all of them." — Astilbe, Long and Short Reviews

The Universes Inside the Lighthouse, the first in Pam’s new Balky Point Adventure series, is about Emma and Charlie Nelson, seventeen-year-old twins, who set out to unravel a mystery at a lighthouse and end up making a discovery that will take them to the far reaches of the universe…s. On one level, it’s a fun YA sci-fi adventure novel about travel through space and a little bit of time, to different worlds and to places where everything is possible. On a deeper level, for those looking for a deeper level, it’s about loneliness, connection, discovering the powers within oneself, and dancing with the enemy.

Pam promises an evening of fun and laughs … or at the very least, she’ll be doing a drawing for a $20 gift certificate to Third Place Books, and there are rumors there might be free cookies. Come on by and say hello!

Pam is also the author of The Wishing Rock series (adult contemporary fiction) and The Pam on the Map series (travelogues).

Third store for Third Place Books

Seward Park PCC property to Ron Sher of Third Place Books

PCC Natural Markets (PCC), the nation's largest natural foods retail cooperative, has announced the sale of the building and property currently occupied by its Seward Park store to Ron Sher of Third Place Books. The sale precedes PCC’s move from the property to a larger site in the nearby Columbia City neighborhood in summer 2015.

Sher is purchasing the Seward Park land and 7,200 sq. ft. building, located at 5041 Wilson Avenue South in Seattle, with the intention of operating a book store, restaurant, and possibly a pub, similar to the project the company developed at the former PCC location in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood.

“PCC is delighted to have reached an agreement with a trusted developer that assures the offering of a new gathering place for Seward Park neighbors and visitors,” said Randy Lee, PCC’s Acting CEO.
“Having a community-oriented successor at our property was extremely important to us, and based on our prior experience in working with Third Place Books, we are hopeful that the property’s new purpose will be welcomed by the local community.
“We appreciate that Seward Park residents are reluctant to lose the Seward Park PCC which has served them well since 1985,” said Ron Sher, owner of Third Place Books. “We are committed to creating a new neighborhood asset and are moving towards opening the Seward Park Third Place Books by year-end ."

For many years PCC had tried to remain in its current location but was unable to upgrade the existing building and parking in a way that would adequately meet growing demand. In January 2013, PCC announced it would move from the Seward Park neighborhood to a new 25,000 sq. ft. site in Columbia City, about one mile from the current store. The new store will enable PCC to offer shoppers more product choices as well as triple available parking.

Headquartered in Seattle, Wash., PCC Natural Markets is a certified organic retail cooperative with annual sales of more than $200 million and an active membership of more than 52,000 households. PCC operates ten neighborhood locations; nine in King County including Fremont, Greenlake Aurora, Greenlake Village, Issaquah, Kirkland, Redmond, Seward Park, View Ridge and West Seattle, and its Edmonds store in South Snohomish County.

Founded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park Wash. and in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle in 2002, Third Place Books is a general interest bookstore.  It is a fun and comfortable place to browse, linger, lounge, relax, read, eat, laugh, play, talk, listen, and just watch the world go by.

Council designated a 70-acre area around the Sears, Central Market, and the WSDOT development as the Aurora Square Community Renewal Area (CRA) in September, 2012. By designating the CRA, Council established that economic renewal would be in the public interest, and that City resources can be justifiably utilized to encourage renewal. Subsequently, Council adopted the CRA Renewal Plan to guide City renewal efforts by identifying projects designed to make all of the current businesses function better while adding new businesses and residents

Mudslides and Seahawks

By Mike Harbour, Sound Transit Deputy CEO

Unfortunately, mudslides continue to be an issue on our Sounder north line. On Wednesday evening, a slide came down in front of a Sounder train heading into Everett. Mud slid onto the tracks immediately in front of the train, which came to an emergency stop in the shallow mud and vegetation. There were no injuries or damage to the train equipment. The train waited about an hour while inspectors evaluated the conditions. Then the train proceeded slowly to Everett Station, pushing the debris off the tracks.

The slide knocked out north line service the rest of the week and we decided to cancel the Seahawks train that was scheduled to run this Sunday between Everett and Seattle. The forecast for new storms was making more slides likely and we didn’t want riders to be stranded trying to get back home. And then another slide hit this morning near Edmonds. The Sounder Seahawks trains on the south line between Lakewood and Seattle will run Sunday as planned.

We appreciate the patience of our riders when slides occur. Fortunately, during the shutdowns we are able to provide direct bus service from the train stations into Seattle and back.

The slide Wednesday was about a mile south of Everett and was the third in the Everett area this season. This part of the corridor is one of six project areas identified for the federally funded slope mitigation efforts underway by the state Department of Transportation and the BNSF Railway Company. Two slope mitigation projects near Edmonds and Mukilteo were completed in March and design on the remaining four is complete. The state DOT, BNSF and the City of Everett are discussing when to begin construction on the third project. Meanwhile, the state DOT is awaiting additional funding to begin construction on the remaining three projects.

Shoreline Area News back on line

That was one wild night.

When the power went off I saw the clouds lighting up pink with flashes that lit the whole sky - transformers blowing in Snohomish county.

I thought this might be my one opportunity to go to bed early - but the tree outside was pounding its cones on our roof - amazing how loud that sounds.

One of the problems with a power outage is remembering what was on when the power went off. When the power comes back on in the middle of the night, suddenly the television is playing, the lights are on, and you are no longer asleep.

Now I'm wondering how many roads are blocked by trees and tree branches.

If you see a photo opportunity, please send it along to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

WeatherWatcher: High Wind Warning

Update at 8:50 PM:
Winds here at home have already picked up as of 8:50 PM and gusts have already been recorded as high as 52 MPH at the Home Education Exchange (formally known as North City Elementary).

The National Weather Service in Seattle has upgraded the High Wind Watch to a High Wind Warning for the Puget Sound Lowlands. This includes the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The warning is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon until 4 AM Friday morning.

Winds are expected to peak at about 30-40 MPH sustained with gusts up to 60 MPH. The peak timing will probably be around the 9 PM - 1 AM for the strongest winds. Wind gusts will probably start developing shortly after 6 PM and will die off close to day break Friday morning.

Plan for wide spread power outages and downed trees. The rain soaked ground has increased concerns for more trees uprooting during this storm. Remember to treat all dark intersections as 4-way stops and stay away from downed trees or power lines.

The National Weather Service states that a High Wind Warning means that a hazardous wind event is imminent or occuring.

Shoreline man wins lottery, buys a new car for first time

A longtime Lottery player from Shoreline won $230,000 from a Hit 5 drawing on November 12. The winning ticket was purchased earlier that day from the Shoreline Fred Meyer (18325 Aurora Ave N). The man said, “I always knew I would win. If you don’t play, you can’t win.”

The winner and his family were most excited about the new car they were able to buy.

He told Lottery officials at the Everett regional office, “I haven’t owned a new car since ‘91. I already bought a Toyota RAV-4 from a local dealership.” He added, “We will also be able to make some timely home improvements just in time for the holidays. I will be re-doing all of the windows in my house – double pane windows, baby!”

The winner said he has been playing Washington’s Lottery for about 6 years using the same numbers. “They’re just random numbers that I feel are right,” said the winner.

When someone in Washington wins a Hit 5 jackpot, others in the state benefit, too. The Fred Meyer that sold the winning ticket will receive a $2,300 selling bonus.

Additionally, proceeds from Washington’s Lottery benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, providing grants to college students statewide. To learn more about Washington’s Lottery, its beneficiaries and to review all up-to-date winning numbers, visit the website,

Shoreline STEM Festival in May

By Ray Koelling

Mark your calendars for the third annual Shoreline STEM Festival for all students K-12 and the entire Shoreline/ LFP community. It will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Shoreline Community College from 10:00am-2:00pm.

It is graciously and generously sponsored by the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, the Shoreline School District and Shoreline Community College. The event is put on by Shoreline STEM, a community-led and organized group of tireless and energetic parents advocating for STEM in K-12 education.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is a part of education that is growing significantly in importance for the youth of our area and the country. While there are wonderful non-STEM career avenues to follow, STEM educational avenues open up nearly limitless opportunities to anyone in the 21st century.

There is a vast amount of scholarship money available in STEM higher education. All data recognizes STEM professions and careers as being the most financially rewarding. In terms of diversity, accessibility and opportunity for jobs or careers with the highest salaries, most stable growth and best life benefits, STEM career pathways consistently outrank non-STEM pathways.

We hope all students, parents, teachers and community will avail themselves of this unique and important opportunity to attend the annual Shoreline district-wide STEM Festival.

Gradually growing into the premier STEM event of this region, it is a “must attend” for any student interested in science, technology, engineering, math and what their futures might be in this rapidly changing society and world.

In addition, the Shoreline event could be a stepping stone to WSSEF (the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair) and then to national/international ISEF (Intel Science and Engineering Fair) where there are millions of dollars in scholarship and award money available.

For more information, please see the webpage or contact ShorelineSTEM@comcast.net or Ray Koelling.

Mister Rogers Sweater Drive - collection at Sound Credit Union

Help neighbors in need this winter by donating your new or gently worn sweaters, coats and cold-weather gear to KCTS 9's 18TH annual Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive, running from January 12 through February 8. All donated items will go to Wellspring Family Services, Queen Anne Helpline and Northwest Center, serving Seattle and King County.

Look for the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive collection bin at any PCC Natural Markets location or Sound Credit Union location in Western Washington; or drop your items off at KCTS 9's Seattle Center studio. Warm clothing for children is greatly needed, but all new or gently used adult and children’s sweaters and coats will be accepted.

“All of us, at some time or other, need help,” said Fred Rogers. “Whether we’re giving or receiving a sweater, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors—in our way, everyone is a giver and receiver."

Fred Rogers began the sweater drive and inspired its spirit of generosity and neighborliness for six years before he passed away in 2003. His red sweater (knitted by his mom) and tennis shoes bring to mind comfort, care and joy in learning for millions. KCTS 9 is honored to continue the program in his memory. Last year's Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive collected more than 7,500 sweaters and coats—5,336 pounds of warm clothing—for families in need throughout Seattle and King County.

A moment of silence

By Meghan Peterka

Today, Wednesday, December 10, others will join an 11year old boy named Itzcuauhtli in silence. This silence will allow us to hear the voices of nature and the simple call to action. An action that could be as simple as deciding to walk or bike instead of drive, to buy one item at the store that is locally produced, or to write a letter to your representative to take action!

Itzcuaihtli is inviting us to join him in silence and to wear a green band around our wrist to show our support for change. Learn more here.

We are all leaders. It is time for us to take action. Please share this with others, especially the children in your life, since it is they who will most impacted by our choices. They should know that they to can take a stand and not wait for the adults in their lives to do so.

15 District teachers earn National Board Certifications

Fifteen Shoreline School District teachers have received their certifications from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

They are:

Eric Allen, Tizbee Holm, Andy Kidd, Gabe Martinez, Linda Richard, Stephanie Rietman, Emily Slack and Stacia Tellefson, Shorecrest High School

Marty Ballew, Shannon Greenway, Lara Sukol and Brandon Torrey, Shorewood High School

Emily Maschman and Mary Thurber, Einstein Middle School

Grace Waylen, District English Language Learners instructional specialist

With this latest announcement, Shoreline now has a total of 81 board-certified teachers and one board-certified administrator currently working in the District. Numbers released by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards show that Washington has the most new NBCTs in the United States (946), and is fourth overall in the total number of NBCTs (8,285).

The national certification process takes a minimum of 18 months. Teachers must demonstrate in their four-part portfolio a deep understanding and application of the national standards that are in place for their field of teaching. A national panel of peers then assesses the portfolio. Teachers also take a six-part examination in their content area.

The Shoreline School District supports the National Board Certification program by paying half of the registration fee. Those who complete the program receive a yearly salary bonus approved by the Legislature. Teachers attaining certification provide service either teaching professional development classes, supporting or mentoring colleagues, or working on projects.

Created in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonpartisan and nonprofit organization devoted to advancing the quality of teaching and learning. For more information, visit the NBPTS website

Shorewood wrestling found no soft landing in matches Tuesday

Shorewood found no soft landing Tuesday night as they faced a pair of Wesco North foes in Everett and Arlington. In the first match of the night Shorewood went against the Seagulls of Everett High School. Everett started the contest with two tough pins and the rout was on. After seven bouts the Thunderbirds found themselves with a 39-0 deficit. Everett used a methodical approach on its feet and dominant riding from the top position the entire night. Senior Erca Erdenebayer attempted to stop the bleeding with a quick 36 second pin at heavyweight, but it was too little too late. Thunderbird Erik Harris-Uldall got his first pin of the season at 138 pounds for the final score of 63-12.

In their second match the Thunderbirds found new energy and focus against the Eagles of Arlington. Sophomore Elias Thorne, who entered the varsity line-up for the first time that night, began things by leading the entire time before securing a third period pin for an early 6-0 lead in the team score.

After Arlington took a 21-6 lead the Thunderbirds responded with four straight wins to pull ahead 28-21. Arlington responded with three straight wins of their own for a 37-28 lead. Erik Harris-Uldall kept the Thunderbird hopes alive in the 138 pound bout by picking up his second pin of the night to pull the team score to 37-34 with one match to go. Unfortunately, Sophomore Fidel Chishingu, who also made his varsity debut tonight, couldn’t hold off his opponent and Arlington escaped with a 43-34 victory.

Shorewood faces Snohomish and Mount Vernon Wednesday night at Snohomish High School.

WeatherWatcher: High Wind Watch

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a High Wind Watch for the greater Puget Sound region, this includes the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The watch is in effect for late Wednesday night and all day Thursday.

Models are starting to indicate a very powerful low pressure system developing off the northern coast of California and moving north - northeast up the coast of Washington and into Vancouver Island. Right now winds are expected to be out of the south sustained around 30-40mph with gusts to 65mph possible.

Timing for these strong winds are expected to pick up for our area Thursday sometime during the late morning and afternoon. Winds likely will last through the evening commute.

Winds this strong will likely bring down large tree branches and trees of any size. Wide spread power outages and dark intersections are also likely. I will post another update when the High Wind watch is upgraded to a warning.

As always I will post information as I see it at http://www.shorelineweather.com.

Panel discussion on taxes and real estate for homeowners in station subareas

On December 11 at City Hall, the 145th Station Citizens Committee (145SCC) will host a panel discussion on taxes and real estate for homeowners in the two light rail station subareas.

The idea for the panel emerged out of the meetings of the 145SCC, at which homeowners questioned the potential implications of redevelopment of neighborhoods surrounding the future 145th Station, particularly in regards to taxes and real estate. These topics are also applicable to homeowners in neighborhoods adjacent to the future 185th Station.

The volunteer panelists include representatives from King County Department of Assessments, Windermere Real Estate, and North Coast Realty Advisors. The event will be held in the Council Chambers of Shoreline City Hall at 7pm to 8:30pm, 17500 Midvale Ave N.

All are welcome. Questions about the event may be directed to 145SCC@gmail.com.

Search continues for LFP man missing in Snohomish lake

The Seattle Times reports that a Lake Forest Park man is missing in Blackman's Lake in Snohomish County.

The 38 year old man was fishing in the lake this weekend. His family reported him missing when he did not return on Sunday.

Volunteers and search and rescue have been looking for him since Sunday, only suspending the search at nightfall. They are expected to resume on Tuesday morning.

According to The Times,
The search was launched early Sunday after relatives of the missing man called 911. The sheriff’s office said the man was last seen on Saturday by another fisherman at the lake as he was inflating a blue kayak in the parking lot.
Authorities on Sunday recovered a partially sunken inflatable blue kayak in the Snohomish lake.

Shoreline Alert sends cryptic message to subscribers

This weekend a phone message was sent from ALERT Shoreline regarding a road closure. It went to subscribers' email, land lines, and cell phones around 9pm on Saturday.
It said: "eastbound closed, one lane westbound open. ETA for opening 11:30pm"

The Shoreline Area News had just published a story about a motorcycle accident on Ballinger. Sources had informed us that there was major police activity and emergency response at the accident site, so closing the road made sense. However, most people had not read the story yet and would not necessarily connect it to the accident.
An hour later, around 10:30pm, the phones rang again: "Ballinger way has been reopened"
The City sent out an explanation today, by email only:
The phone message was sent in error as a result of a technical glitch in the system. The ALERT was set to only go out by email, but the system sent it to every contact method possible. We apologize for this inconvenience and assure you we did not intend to send a phone message late at night. We will work with our vendor to ensure it doesn't occur again.
ALERT Shoreline is an automated system. Citizens can sign up on the City webpage to receive notices about whatever interests them.

Northshore Fire Department reduces its bond debt

The Northshore Fire Department has retired more than $1.9 million in long-term bond debt, saving taxpayers roughly $1.1 million in interest payments over the next 15 years.

The debt was incurred in 2009 when the fire department issued $17 million in voter approved bonds to fund the purchase of property and construction of its new headquarters station and training facility in Kenmore.

The bond debt reduction was made possible by the sale of the fire department’s former headquarters station. The Board of Fire Commissioners took action to use the proceeds from the sale to retire the last year of what was a 20 year bond.

The former station served as Northshore’s headquarters from 1977 to 2011, and is now home to Colombia Crest Montessori School.
