Meridian Park School celebrates 10 years of clean energy produced by the sun

Solar panels on MP rooftop
By Maryn Wynne

Shoreline’s first public solar array has been producing clean energy from the sun for 10 years and will continue to produce energy for years to come.

The public is invited to attend the rededication ceremony. The event will be held October 24, 11 am at Meridian Park School outside the music building.

The short program will have information about the system and recognize those who made it happen.  4th graders will be in attendance along with other students; faculty, members of the public and elected officials are invited.

This solar array is at Meridian Park School on top of the music building. It is a 2.4 kilowatt system that has produced 19,100.3 Kilowatt-hours of electricity. From fossil-fueled sources, this amount of electricity would have emitted 26,740.4 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Sparked by Larry Owens, a solar-power enthusiast (and now professional) helped form the nonprofit Shoreline Solar Project as a way of organizing neighbors, public officials, community and business leaders, and renewable energy experts around his idea to create a solar energy project at his daughter's school.

Working with Seattle City Light, the installation is the Green Power Program’s largest and most powerful system located at a school.

In 2008, Solar 4R Schools installed a weather system and provided educators with activity guides, science kits, and onsite training to assist them in integrating renewable energy education into their curriculum. You can see real time output of the system at the site (http://www.solar4rschools.org/schools/meridian-park-school)

Meridian Park School is also the birthplace of NW SolarFest the region largest and longest running Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Fair now held each year on the last Saturday of July at Shoreline Community College.

Margaret King selected as Shoreline’s new City Attorney

City Manager Debbie Tarry has selected Margaret King to be the City’s new City Attorney. King's selection is the culmination of an extensive search after long-time City Attorney Ian Sievers announced his retirement.

“I’m excited to appoint Margaret as the City’s new City Attorney,” stated Tarry. “She has an extensive background in working with local governments on complex legal issues. Her skills and legal knowledge will be a great asset to the City. Margaret will be a valuable asset to the City's leadership team.”

King’s first day of employment with the City will be Monday, November 3.

King has 23 years of professional legal experience, 17 of which have been representing state or local governments. King is currently the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Snohomish County serving as the chief legal adviser to the Snohomish County Council, the elected County Treasurer, and the Department of Emergency Management. Prior to that she worked as a Senior Associate Attorney for Kenyon Disend, PLLC where she served as the City Attorney for the cities of Roslyn, Sultan, and Gold Bar, and the Town of Hunts Point, and as an Assistant City Attorney for the cities of North Bend and Tukwila.

Because of the ongoing issues with the Point Wells development in Snohomish County and King's current position as the chief legal adviser to the Snohomish County Council, the City ensured there would be no conflict of interest before finalizing the employment offer. Since King has not worked on any issues related to the Point Wells development since she started working for Snohomish County in 2013, the City and King are confident there are no conflicts of interest that would prevent her from fully representing the City.

The City hired the executive search firm Prothman to lead the candidate search. Prothman received 18 applications for the position. Of those, 9 candidates were identified for initial screening. Of those, the City Manager chose six finalists to be interviewed by three panels. The interview panels were made up of City staff and the City’s Leadership Team. The final interview was with the City Manager.

OPEN HOUSE:
Thursday, October 30, 5:30 – 7:00pm

Shoreline City Hall. 17500 Midvale Ave. N
Monday to Friday 9 - 5

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and the City of Shoreline present “I Make therefore i am”, a new exhibit featuring printmakers, photographers, and potters.

Christine creates her monotypes by building up layer upon layer of translucent colors. The process mirrors the repetitive nature of daily life, and as she goes through rolling, inking and printing, the overlapping and the intertwining create beautiful and spontaneous surprises. The color palettes and the shapes come from her background as a Designer and the naturally vibrant mossy greens, slate blues, and rusty oranges are from the lush Northwest surroundings. Christine is a member of Seattle Print Arts.

Christopher’s works include reduction woodcut prints, contemporary sculpture, water color painting and digital photography. The 2D subject matter conveys specific places or objects. Recent works have become larger and more lyrical. The work is like a documentation of his life and experiences as an artist, incorporating ephemera – lists, notes, maps and calendars. Christopher holds an MFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has exhibited extensively in the US.

Colleen works in traditional and non-traditional methods of mono prints and mono types. Her work reflects the lines and shapes she sees, like the carefree lines of a rowboat or the grid of an old Chinese ledger. These shapes and lines are the basis for juxtaposition and combinations of color. Her recent work “Afterimages” is a collection that reminds her of the colors, feelings and patterns of the islands of Indonesia. Colleen exhibits regularly on the West Coast.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Tatyana demonstrated exceptional talent for artistic expression at an early age. She earned a Master’s in Architecture from the University of Architecture and Engineering in St. Petersburg. She participated in numerous art shows, and experimented with watercolor, pastel, and oil. She later developed her unique sensual style in engraving and lithography. The mainly black and white graphics, with the occasional splash of color, communicate her passion for life and art. She is an active member of Seattle Prints Arts, Vernissage Art Gallery and Gallery One.

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Photo Contest Winners

Photographers of all ages and skills were invited to participate in “Summer in the Garden” Photo Contest. This year’s winners include Walter Zamojski, whose photo was cited by the judges as, “A stunning shot of an almost incandescent, solitary cyclamen amidst a carpet of oxalis.” The Garden has become a venue for the arts in Shoreline, hosting permanent and temporary sculpture, and events like the Garden of Creativity and the Solstice Stroll.

The Clay Club provides an opportunity for students to study the art of ceramics and explore a wide range of technique, form, surface and design. It also sponsors workshops, seminars and exhibits, and builds a social and creative bridge between the college campus and community. Artists in this show include Adrian Gomez, Ava Cromwell, Chris Scamehorn, Ed Neff, Helma Welles, Jackie Victoria, John Armstrong, Kim Wratten, Kylee Hutchison, Peggy Hill, and Richard Lawson.

Shoreline City Hall is located at 17500 Midvale Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. For more information contact the Arts Council at 206-417- 4645.

Crews working on I-5 in Shoreline

After weeks of replacing and repairing concrete panels on southbound I-5 between SR 104 (Ballinger Way/205th) and NE 117th Street near Northgate, contractor crews are getting ready to make the turn north.

Beginning the week of Oct. 27, panel replacement work will start in the northbound lanes. It’ll get underway near NE 145th and work north to the King-Snohomish County line - the entire length of Shoreline.

But the southbound lanes aren’t done yet. After Nov. 1, a new crew comes in to start grinding those lanes. That will help remove shallow cracks and the bumps on I-5, including the bump drivers are experiencing over the new panels.

Grinding work is generally noisier, so they planned it to start in November when nearby residents are more likely to have windows closed at night to keep out the colder temperatures.

More information about the project, including ramp closure information and detour routes, can be found right here.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Scarlet

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer  (Lunar Chronicles, part 2)

In the second volume of this futuristic fairy tale retelling, Scarlet, a spunky French farm girl in a red hoodie, is frantically searching for her grandmother. Was Grand-mere kidnapped? Or worse?

Scarlet reluctantly accepts the help of Wolf, a tattooed street fighter. But Wolf has some secrets he prefers not to share with Scarlet.

And speaking of secrets, apparently Grand-mere had a few of her own... secrets about a missing princess now known as Cinder.

Fairy tale, science fiction, political intrigue, and romance intertwine to create a fast-moving narrative and leave readers eager for the next volume: Cress, the story of a long-haired girl who has been kept isolated on a satellite since childhood, is scheduled for publication in February 2014.

Recommended for readers ages 12 to adult. Minimal cussing, some violence, some blood, some tactful off-page canoodling.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true.  --R. Silvern

Taboo Video is gone - to be replaced by microhousing

Former location of adult business will be site
of microhousing

The Taboo Video building has been razed and the land cleared and graded in preparation for construction of a "micro-housing" development on the site, which is on the east side of Aurora at 170th.

This will be Shoreline’s first micro-housing development. Micro-housing projects are all a bit different but what they have in common is very small, but affordable rentals. Rooms are small and efficient and some facilities are shared, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Projects in Seattle have been controversial because no parking was provided and the buildings put a large number of people (with cars) in a compact area. Shoreline has attempted to head off that problem by requiring parking.

Rachel Markle, Planning Director, set the parking ratio at .5 stalls per bedroom.

"The City is requiring that the project have a parking and transportation management plan that includes such components like requiring the property owner to manage rental of the units to minimize parking demand meaning if parking issues arise the property owner must provide solutions or risk noncompliance (fines); introductory subsidized transit passes for new residents w/out cars; and monitoring of parking on and off site (if applicable) including a report and survey by a designated property manager to be submitted to the City every two years."

With a building directly on Aurora, services are nearby and easy to walk to, as improvements to Aurora added sidewalks along the length of the Corridor. Economic development director Dan Eernissee said that the site is perfect to encourage car-free living

'The former Taboo Video is -- in our opinion, anyway -- almost perfectly situated to make parking off-site difficult. To the east is a cemetery over a fence, and the streets to access on-street parking to the east are hundreds of yards away. Going across the street on Aurora is difficult. In other words, if the tenant has a car but doesn't have a stall on-site, they are unlikely to rent there for long.'

Eernissee continues,

"We think that the project will provide a nice niche in our housing stock: unsubsidized, affordable housing that encourages car-free living along our best-served transit corridor, Aurora Ave N."

The developer has been in discussions with Shoreline Community College about the possibility of having a portion of the units allocated for college students, many of whom come from foreign countries.

Shorewood Orchestra Clothing & Household Drive helps fund trip to Carnegie Hall

Shorewood orchestra at Carnegie Hall 2011

Turn out those closets! This is the best opportunity you will have to donate items instead of putting them in the landfill.

Every four years since 2003, Shorewood High School Orchestra has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. It is quite an honor that Shorewood continues to be invited back.

To raise money for the trip, Shorewood Orchestra is holding a clothing and household textile drive. Funds raised from this drive will reduce costs for the group as a whole.

Working with a company called Clothes for the Cause, the orchestra will be paid a sliding scale for each pound of clothing and household textiles collected. The more that is collected, the more Orchestra will be paid per pound.

What's great about this collection drive is that the clothing and textiles do NOT need to be in usable condition. This company will sort through and separate what can be reused and what will be broken down and recycled. Either way, Orchestra gets paid.

Items can be torn, tattered, stained, holey, smelly, stretched out and ready for the garbage can. All those items too grungy for Goodwill can be turned into cash for Shorewood Orchestra! All you have to do is pack your donations into plastic garbage bags so that they stay dry. You don't have to separate usable from unusable items -- the company does all that for you.

Here's what you can donate:
  • Clothing of any kind/condition
  • Gloves and hats
  • Shoes of any kind/condition, paired or single (cloth, leather, plastic, rubber)
  • Towels: bath, kitchen, rags in any condition
  • Linens: sheets, blankets, quilts, table cloths, placemats in any condition
  • Curtains, draperies, cloth shower curtains
  • Throw rugs (not carpet)
  • Throw pillows (not bed pillows)
  • Bags and purses (synthetic/leather), gym bags, backpacks
  • Stuffed animals

Here's what you cannot donate: glass, breakables, electronics, pet beds, bed pillows, carpet, uniforms, mattresses, hotel linens, items previously for sale at a thrift store (unless you purchased and used for personal use prior to donating).

Bring your donations to Orchestra's collection event on Saturday, November 1 from 10am to Noon at the Shorewood High School parking lot.
Questions can be directed to Rene
Orchestra students thank you for your generous support.

Words worth

gauche \GOHSH\ adjective

*1 : lacking social experience or grace; also : not tactful : crude

2 : crudely made or done

"Gauche" is one of several words that come from old suspicions or negative associations surrounding the left side and use of the left hand. In French, "gauche" literally means "left," and it has the extended meanings "awkward" and "clumsy." "Awkward" itself comes from the Middle English "awke," meaning "turned the wrong way" or "left-handed." On the other hand, "adroit" and "dexterity" have their roots in words meaning "right" or "on the right side."

Scots Romp Over Royals, 5-1

Powered by Alexa Iacolucci's hat trick, the Shorecrest Scots maintained their perfect WesCo record Tuesday night with a convincing 5-1 win over the Lynnwood Royals.

The Scots scored early and often in the first half, building a 3-0 lead. Iacalucci scored the first of her three goals four minutes into the game with a long shot that found the top left corner. Ten minutes later MacKenzie Perry slipped a deflection past the Royals' goalkeeper, and Sophia Viviano headed in a corner-kick from Rachael Moulton.

Royals freshman Cassidy O'Dell scored early in the second half, taking advantage of a napping SC defense, to make it 3-1 Scots.

Iacalucci closed out the scoring with two long blasts, both from better than 40 yards out.

Ranked #10 in the state  this week in 2A by the Seattle Times, the Scots have five regular season games remaining before Districts start on Saturday Nov. 1.  Shorecrest will be hosting the tournament at Shoreline Stadium.

SCC Foundation Student Success Breakfast Nov 6

It’s almost time for the SCC Foundation Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast! Join us on Thursday, November 6, at 7am in Shoreline Community College’s PUB main dining room.

Now in our 17th year, this event brings campus and community members together to support Shoreline students. We hope you will join us before the start of your workday as we raise much needed funds for student scholarships.

Together we can make a difference in the lives of these talented and motivated members of our community in their pursuit to become part of a well-educated workforce. Your participation will provide emergency aid and academic scholarship assistance to students who have chosen to study at Shoreline Community College.

With your help we can ensure that Shoreline students gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in this competitive economy.

Thank you for supporting SCC students!

More information here on securing your seat, table or being a sponsor of this year’s event.
