Construction begins on biggest project at Swedish Edmonds in 40 years

at the Swedish Edmonds groundbreaking

The mood was festive in Edmonds as about 300 community members celebrated the hospital’s 50th anniversary and groundbreaking milestones at Swedish Edmonds on Wednesday, September 3rd.

Shovels plunged into dirt that will be covered one year from now by a two-story, 77,000-square-foot facility to include a new emergency department (ED), urgent care center, observation unit, outpatient diagnostic imaging center, new lobby, front entry, 37,000-square-foot shelled second floor and more.

“This is a historic moment for the community we serve at Swedish Edmonds,” said David Jaffe, chief executive at the hospital. “With this new facility, we can meet the growing healthcare needs for decades to come and offer an unmatched patient experience.”

The hospital opened in 1964 as a result of voters approving the establishment of Snohomish County Public Hospital District #2 in 1962. Back then, the entire facility and property cost $2 million. The new expansion will cost over $60 million.

When the building is constructed, a time capsule will be placed in a cornerstone of the building and a small plaque will identify the location. Along with hospital-related objects destined for the time capsule, a Hostess Twinkie will also go inside to test the urban myth about shelf life for the cream-filled sponge cake snack.

Learn more about the expansion and see renderings of the new facility here

Turning 65? Know Your Medicare Options

Shoreline resident Amy Snow Landa recommended this article, which breaks down a complicated topic in a straightforward way.

Turning 65? Know Your Medicare Options
By Oraida Roman
President of Senior Products, Humana’s Intermountain Region

As Shoreline residents approach their 65th birthday, it is important for them to know their Medicare options, including when they can enroll and the types of health plans available.

Seniors should keep an eye out for materials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the months leading up to their 65th birthday. In the meantime, it can’t hurt to pull information together to prepare. Following are tips to help seniors and their caregivers as they begin the Medicare plan selection process:

Know Your Options. You will want to find a plan that provides the health care coverage you need and maximizes your health care dollars. In general, your options include:

·      Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is a federal insurance program that offers basic coverage for hospital care and medical expenses and no coverage for prescriptions. Beneficiaries typically must pay a premium for Part B coverage. Many find they need additional coverage for services not covered by Original Medicare.
·      Medicare Supplement plans pay some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, including deductibles and coinsurance. Beneficiaries must pay an additional premium.
·      A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), or Medicare Part D, provides prescription drug coverage, helps lower prescription drug expenses and protects against higher costs in the future. Beneficiaries must pay an additional premium.
·      Medicare Advantage (Part C) typically provides extra benefits, services and often prescription drug coverage. Beneficiaries may or may not pay an additional premium.

Know Your Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Enrollment Timeframe. This year, during the Annual Election Period (AEP) from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, seniors who are eligible for Medicare can review Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plan options and select health care coverage for 2015. However, people turning 65 before October can enroll earlier in the year. In fact, they have a seven-month window – known as the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) – to enroll. This includes the three months before their 65th birthday, the month of their birthday and the three following months. If a 64-year-old enrolls in the first three months of their IEP, their benefits kick in on the first day of the month of their birthday.[i] If they enroll during the remainder of their IEP, their benefits will be effective on the first day of the following month.

Know Your Medical Cost History. Review your records to see how much you spent on health care during the past year. This should include hospital expenses, pharmacy costs and doctor bills. Then, determine if the previous year was typical, and try to calculate your best estimate for health care costs in the year ahead.

Know Your Resources. If you are considering a Medicare Advantage plan, research the costs, benefits and network of doctors and hospitals associated with each plan. Take advantage of resources available to help you with the research to make an informed choice. The government’s Medicare website, is a good resource that lets you find and compare Medicare health and prescription drug plans in your area. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services make it easier to navigate the Medicare landscape by rating health plans on a five-star assessment grade.

Compare Benefits. Insurers often offer multiple Medicare Advantage plans from which beneficiaries can choose to fit their specific life, income and health situations. Benefits from these plans may include primary care and specialty office visits, routine physical and preventive care, unlimited medically necessary inpatient hospital days and worldwide emergency care. Some plans include membership in fitness classes and lifestyle enrichment programs.

Guard Against Fraud. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services prohibit Medicare Advantage carriers from proactively contacting you by phone or in-person. They can only reach out to you once you have initiated contact. To protect yourself from potential scams, don’t give personal information to any uninvited home visitors or solicitors who call selling Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan products.

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, it is important to start considering Medicare options to select the plan that best fits all of your needs.

Oraida Roman is President of Senior Products for Humana’s Intermountain Region which includes Washington, Oregon, Utah and Idaho. She has responsibility for the overall strategic direction and growth of Humana’s Medicare Advantage business in the region.

Celebrate the new Shorecrest High School Sept 27

Entry to the new Shorecrest

Join the community in celebrating the completion of the new Shorecrest High School campus from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the school, 15343 25th NE.

The event will feature a barbecue lunch hosted by the Shorecrest Boosters, a dedication program at 1:15pm in the gymnasium, self-guided tours and student performances in the theater.

Shorecrest’s main academic building and gymnasium were replaced and the theater upgraded in phases over the past three years. Students began using the main building in February 2014.

The new buildings were designed by Integrus Architecture and constructed by Spee West Construction. A bond issue approved by Shoreline School District voters in 2010 combined with matching funds from the state paid for the construction. The old Shorecrest was demolished this summer and is being replaced by parking areas, plazas and landscaping.

Across the District, Shorewood High School was replaced at the same time, with the academic building, gymnasium and theater opening in September 2013. This summer the school’s athletic fields were constructed on the southern portion of the campus and include a football/soccer field and track, six tennis courts, and practice baseball and softball fields.

Two local programs provide help in navigating the Elder Care maze

Navigating the Elder Care Maze
“I need to find assisted living for my mom.”
“My father-in-law doesn’t drive and can’t use Metro. He needs information on transportation options.”
“I'm providing regular care for my adult son, who has a disability. I need help!”
“Who do I call?!”
Do those questions sound familiar? Finding help for an older adult— yourself or a loved one— can be a daunting task. Fortunately, two local programs provide guidance in navigating the maze of community and government programs:

  • Senior Information and Assistance (1-888-4ELDERS) is the go-to number for anyone age 60+ and their family members who needs help identifying resources that meet their needs.
  • The King County Caregiver Support Network provides guidance to unpaid primary caregivers of adults of any age who are unable to care for themselves—typically family members or close friends or neighbors.

Help by filling out a survey

Aging and Disability Services (ADS)—the Area Agency on Aging for Seattle-King County—currently funds both programs. In the coming year, services may be enhanced to help a broader range of older adults and individuals with disabilities plan to live independently in the community.

As part of that process, ADS would like community input. Please take a few moments to complete an online survey that will help with these important decisions. The survey is open through September 30. Here’s the link.

Free readers' theater in Edmonds Sunday

The Driftwood Players present: Selection Day, an original work to be presented on Sunday, September 21, 2014, 7pm at the Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St in Edmonds. Free of charge.

Selection Day, By Sam Graber
In the very near future, the best of the best college-bound students are being selected for the Future Leader of America. Athletes, inventors and teen overachievers consider selection the ultimate honor. But with winsome looks and farm schooling, young Daynard is not someone who would otherwise expect to be selected. Except Daynard has never lost at anything in his life. Ever. And what Daynard and the other eager students will soon discover is that this is no ordinary selection…

PLAYWRIGHT'S STATEMENT: Recently I got an email from The Driftwood Players’ office manager Keith Gehrig with a telling signature line: sent through the universe, somehow it works! This play is about what happens to all our data getting watched and collected by people we don’t know. But instead of being another writer crafting story via the fashionable trend of distant dystopias, Selection Day takes place in the United States of a much tighter timeline, the idea being that today’s use of secret national security letters and widespread warrantless surveillance will quickly lead to data controllers taking even further steps. Now, you’re going, ‘uh-oh, we’re stuck at the theater with a script by some weirdo’. Let me just say…you’re probably right. I am a weirdo. But I wasn’t when I was young. And the youth are the only ones who can get us out of this mess.

Directed by David Alan Morrison. Featuring: Julie L. Bryan, James Cogswell, Parker Hale, Shana Handwerk, Mike Rorvick and Jon Woods

FIRST DRAFT! Actors dramatize the work "readers-theatre" style, giving the author a glimpse of what works and what doesn't. After the reading, a moderated Q/A session with the dramatist and audience continues to explore the work. We hope you join us as we bring another exciting live arts experience to the Edmonds community.

Don’t Drip and Drive” get your vehicle tested Saturday at Central Market

Vehicle leaks cause havoc for drivers and the environment

Motorists in Shoreline can get their cars tested by volunteers from ECOSS on Saturday, September 20, at the Central Market in Shoreline between 9 am – 2 pm. 15505 Westminster Way N, Shoreline 98133.

Car owners with leaks can then find an affordable fix and keep pollutants out of Puget Sound, thanks to the “Don’t Drip and Drive” program.

As part of the program, participating repair shops across Western Washington will conduct a free visual leak inspection (a diagnostic service valued at up to $80) from July to September. If there is a problem, the driver will receive a coupon for 10 percent off service (up to $50) to fix the problem - a total savings of up to $130. The coupon will expire at the end of September 2014.

“This offer puts people in the driver’s seat to find out if their car has a leak and gives them a discount on fixing it, as auto leaks can be expensive,” said Brian Landau, Surface Water and Environmental Services Manager, City of Shoreline. “Fixing the problem can help drivers keep their cars on the road while keeping pollutants, such as oil, from traveling into our local waterways and Puget Sound.”

Every year, more than 7 million quarts of motor oil drips out of vehicles onto streets and parking lots and makes its way to lakes, rivers, streams and the Puget Sound. Most of this toxic pollution comes from small drips from cars and trucks.

Puget Sound Starts Here’s “Don’t Drip and Drive” program was designed to build awareness and educate people throughout the Puget Sound region that it is important to check for vehicle leaks regularly to keep their car on the road and protect local waters. Studies show that 67 percent of drivers who find a leak will fix it within three months.

If you are unable to attend the free testing event on September 20, take advantage of the free visual inspection for vehicle leaks, by visiting one of the participating repair shops July - September 2014. For a complete listing of participating locations and more information, visit www.fixcarleaks.org

ECOSS is looking for volunteers for this event!  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Ann Boyce at ann@ecoss.org or by phone at 206-767-0432 ext. 1004.

For more information about this and other regional efforts to clean-up stormwater runoff before it reaches local waters and Puget Sound, go to this webpage
