Mural artist and Seattle Sketcher in Shoreline again

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Two familiar artists have once again left their mark on Shoreline.

Edmonds artist Andy Eccleshal, known for his Echo Lake mural on 1st NE (see previous article), was commissioned by Jeri Drager, owner of a dealership for collector cars, to paint a unique and classic mural on the south side of his building.

Drager’s Classic Car is a dealership for collector cars hidden behind a paint store and appliance store on Aurora across from Sky Nursery at 18805 Aurora Ave N.

Mural by Andy Eccleshal

The mural shows a street with buildings which could be from the 1940s. If you stand in front of it and have your photo taken, it looks like you have stepped back in time.

Car guys and gals, bikers and families pull up to have their favorite cars and bikes photographed in front of his mural.

The Seattle Times’ “Sketcher”, Gabriel  Campanario, recently did a story/ sketch in The Seattle Times about the mural. (Drive-up mural isn't just any old roadside attraction.) Campanario was last sketching in Shoreline in 2011 when he did the ponies at Ronald Bog and Aurora and the Interurban Trail and the Blue Bridge.

This time he made a sketch of Jeri Drager in front of his new mural then posed for a photo himself, with Jeri in front of the mural.

Updated 08-27-2014 10:23pm

By Evan Smith

Republican Robert Reedy qualified in the August 5 primary to meet Democratic 32nd District State Sen. Maralyn Chase in the November 4 general election even though Reedy trailed Democrat Chris Eggen in the King County part of the district.

In the King County portion of the district -- Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle -- Eggen led Reedy 3,564 votes (26.69 percent) to 2,727 (20.42 percent), behind the 7,236 votes for Chase (52.68 percent), with 28 write-in votes (0.21 percen).

But in the Snohomish County part of the district -- Lynnwood, Woodway and nearby unincorporated areas, and south Edmonds -- Reedy led Eggen 2,980 votes (30.98 percent) to 1,909 votes (19.84 percent, behind Chase's 4,698 (48.84 percent), with 33 write-in votes (0.34 percent).

That gave Chase 11,934 total votes, Reedy 5,707 and Eggen 5,473, with 61 write-in votes.

Both counties certified results Tuesday, Aug. 19. The secretary of state signed final certification Friday, Aug. 22.

Matter of Balance class will be starting in September

Toshiko Aramaki

A Fall Matter of Balance class will be starting on Wednesday, September 10 and continue through to October 29 at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center. This is an 8 hour class, meeting from 12:30-2:30pm. The class includes one hour of exercise and one hour of discussion and includes breaks. There is no fee for this important class for seniors; funding is provided by the Shoreline Fire Department. Toshiko Aramaki is the trained and experienced instructor.

It has been found that seniors who continue to exercise and learn about how to prevent falls are more likely to be able to stay healthy and at home. Many seniors experience fear of falling and restrict their activities. The advantage of a Matter of Balance class includes managing concerns about falls and emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear and increase activity levels.

Participants learn to view falls and fear of falls as controllable by setting realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn exercises to increase strength and balance.

The program was developed by the Royal center at Boston University and is nationally recognized as an outstanding program that promotes fall prevention.

To register call the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center at 206-365-1536 or in person at the center located in the southern-most building of the Shoreline center, 18560 1st Ave NE #1.

LFP Residents: Request a tree be planted in front of your property on City Right-of-Way

Japanese Snowbell

In an ongoing effort to increase the City's tree canopy cover volunteers on the Lake Forest Park Tree Board will plant a limited number of trees on City right-of-way locations at no cost to property owners.

Various species of trees (those planted in 2013 include maple, dogwood, redbud, sourwood, and japanese snowbell) will be purchased by the City and planted by volunteers. Each tree will be approximately 6 to 8 feet tall at the time of planting and will be situated in a manner that will not obstruct sight lines from driveways or infringe on views. In order to ensure that the trees will not interfere with utilities, species will be chosen that will reach a maximum height of approximately 20 to 25 feet.

Homeowners can participate in the Tree Planting Project by giving permission for a tree to be planted on the right-of-way in front of their property and by agreeing to help with the ongoing watering of the tree by monitoring and filling the tree's water bag until the tree is established (approximately 3 years).

Family Day at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market

Photos by Jerry Pickard

Sunday was Family Day at the Market in Lake Forest Park, with live music and special activities.

One of the attractions for the kids was Clover, The Balloon Fairy. She didn't talk but the kids seemed to understand, anyway.

Quichua Mashis played music from their native Ecuador. The band is composed of Quichua natives from the Andes. They also had a booth with arts and crafts.

Fire and police shared a booth and gave information to the shoppers who stopped to say hello.

Across the street, the fire station was open for visitors,
with shiny, red fire engines and handsome fire fighters.

And there was ice cream, cold drinks, and Kettle Korn.

And, of course, there were alpacas.
Farmer and fiber artist Pam Wilmot from Heart of Dreams Alpacas

Food Truck Thursday: Streetzeria brought out the neighbors

People lined up for pizza at Streetzeria food truck

By Dorrena Ortega

Streetzeria was our first Thursday food truck in Ridgecrest. I learned this is a new, local restaurant, here in Shoreline. They did an awesome job on the pizza and I'm looking forward to checking out the restaurant now.

Fresh made pizza dough

One of the best qualities about the city of Shoreline is the city is small enough that people here can get to know their neighbors. Anything that gets people out of their homes and talking to their neighbors should be encouraged. I can't think of a better way to do this than by sharing a meal with each other and summer is a perfect time to do this.

Streetzeria staff worked hard and fast

There was some talk about the possibility of Shoreline hosting a food truck rodeo next year. Personally, I'd love for Shoreline to host Food Truck Thursday all summer long in different neighborhoods. This would give everyone weekly opportunities to try different foods that we wouldn't get a chance to otherwise as well as meet people from other neighborhoods in Shoreline.

Hungry yet?

The Streetzeria Restaurant is located in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Shoreline, at 1857 NW 195th St, 98177.

Food Truck Thursday continues for three more weeks in the Ridgecrest neighborhood (see previous article.)

The next food truck event is this Thursday, August 28, with a truck from Jemil's Big Easy, 5-8pm, 165th and 5th in Ridgecrest.

Veteran's memorial bricks now on sale for Shoreline memorial

Interest was high at the veterans' booth at Celebrate Shoreline

The Shoreline Veterans' Association, under the sponsorship of the Starr Sutherland Jr. American Legion Post 227 in Shoreline, is selling engraved bricks to honor veterans and raise funds for the Shoreline Veterans' Memorial.

The bricks, which will have the name, branch of service, rank, and dates of service for an individual veteran, will be part of the base of the memorial, which will be erected by Shoreline City Hall Council Chambers.

The Shoreline Area News has partnered with the Veteran's Association. For every brick purchased, the Shoreline Area News offers the opportunity to publish a 300 word article and photo, submitted by the purchaser, about the veteran who is being honored.

Organizer Dwight Stevens said, "As soon as the Shoreline City Council approved the project on July 28, we started selling. We had a booth at the Ridgecrest Ice Cream Social and at Celebrate Shoreline and will look for other opportunities to connect with people."

The group is also soliciting donations, which are tax-deductible. County Councilmember Rod Dembowski obtained a $10,000 grant to help fund the project, which is currently estimated at $65,000, plus printing, advertising, soliciting and permitting costs. Recology CleanScapes has donated $1,000.

The site is to be 32 feet in diameter, bordered by a 5 foot wide, with a white, pervious concrete sidewalk surrounding a flat circle of the engraved brick pavers. Seven 4' high obelisks on the sidewalk will name the different service branches, including the National Guard and Merchant Marine.

Large donations will be recognized on a plaque at the site and there will be individual plaque space on three to seven masonry benches between the obelisks, with a "Ring of Honor" for large donors.
There is space for four names on the order form, but additional names can be included. Engraved pavers are $100 each.

Forecast
Last week's data

Forecast: This week we have another high pressure system moving through. The peak of this system will likely be Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures both days are expected to be right around 80°F, possibly a little higher, towards 85°F, especially on Tuesday. Thursday-Friday an onshore flow will kick up again bringing us a pattern of morning clouds/fog and afternoon sun with highs coming back down to around the low-mid 70's.

Labor day weekend looks like a mild disturbance may move through the area bringing us scattered rain showers Saturday into Monday. High temperatures will be pleasant, right around the low 70's but with rain showers the humidity is going to be a bit high. I expect it to feel a little muggy over the weekend.
