Mystery piano vandalized - being removed by Parks department

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Shoreline residents near Shoreview Park have been tantalized by the sounds of piano music coming from the direction of the park.

Many assumed the piano was part of the Painted Pianos - donated pianos painted by artists which are placed in public spaces around Shoreline for people to play.

But no, according to a report by KOMO, this piano, which was badly out of tune, was placed between two trees in Shoreview Park by Shoreline resident Kaare Carlson, who told the reporter that "he and two friends used their all-terrain dolly to take the piano into the woods where people could enjoy it in a spiritual setting. He said it pains him to see pianos go to the garbage dump."

The piano had a distinguished history as it was last owned by jazz singer Greta Matassa. She had hoped to refurbish it but found that it was beyond saving.

Still, people were playing it.

A reader tipped the Shoreline Area News that the piano had been "horribly vandalized and pushed into a ravine." We contacted Dick Deal, Director of Shoreline Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services who sent Parks staff to check.

The piano was not in the ravine, but it had been vandalized.

Deal said,
"The mystery piano that a resident placed in Shoreview Park has been vandalized and is being removed by Park Maintenance staff. I was never contacted by the person who placed the piano so I don’t know who to contact. To keep it from being scattered and becoming a bigger problem, parks staff will be removing it.
"I am a fan of “guerrilla” art, but when it is not secured in place it unfortunately just takes one person to destroy the art for those that enjoy it. "
However, the  Painted Pianos are still in place through August. Here's the webpage and here's the map.

Portions of SR 99 in Seattle to close for four days starting this weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation will close both directions of SR 99 between South Spokane Street and Valley Street from 10pm Friday, Aug. 22, until 5am Monday, Aug. 25. Crews will reopen SR 99 south of the Battery Street Tunnel just before the Monday morning commute; however, the highway will remain closed through the tunnel to Valley Street until 5am Wednesday, Aug. 27.

“We need Seattle commuters to plan ahead for this closure,” said Dave Sowers, deputy administrator for the WSDOT Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program. “The section of 99 we’re closing Monday and Tuesday is shorter in length than what we’re closing that weekend, but it has the potential to create longer backups and delays both on city streets and I-5.”

Seahawks traffic considerations

Northbound SR 99 will be open from South Royal Brougham Way and southbound SR 99 will be open from Columbia Street until midnight Friday, Aug. 22, for traffic related to the Seahawks’ preseason game.

Why a four-day closure is needed

It will take four days for contractor crews working for WSDOT to demolish and replace the section of SR 99 over Broad Street. This new section of the highway will become part of the permanent connection between the SR 99 tunnel’s north portal and a new surface street section of Aurora Avenue North.

Arts Council Presents Monster Movie Night at LFP City Hall Thursday

Arts Council Presents Monster Movie Night at LFP City Hall Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 7 p.m.

Join the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Arts Council and University of Washington Bothell Monster Movie Morality Class for a free monster movie double feature at Lake Forest Park City Hall. "Little Shop of Horrors" (1960) will screen at 7:00 p.m. and "Nosferatu" (1922) will screen at 8:30 p.m.

Little Shop of Horrors (1960), NR, 7pm

In the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors, Skid Row florist Seymour Krelborn cares for a strange, carnivorous plant. Faced with the threat of losing his job, Seymour is forced to decide just how far he’s willing to go to keep his flesh-eating plant alive. This film is unrated, but has some violent themes that may not be appropriate for all ages. We recommend treating it as a PG rating.

Nosferatu(1922),
NR, 8:30pm

Nosferatu was roughly adapted from Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. As a work of horror, it presents Count Orlok, a character associated heavily with plague and rats. This is the result of an expressionist influence and an attempt to make the character of Dracula reflect externally the evil that defines his internal being. It is unrated, but may not be appropriate for all ages. Again, we recommend treating it as a PG rating.

The event is free and open to the public. Seats will be limited based on the council chamber room's seating capacity.

Over the past eight years, the Seattle-based company has washed over 200,000 vehicles during  twice-annual “free car wash days”

Brown Bear Car Wash will add sparkle and shine to thousands of cars and trucks this Thursday (August 21) with free car washes at its 21 tunnel wash locations as it celebrates its 57th anniversary. Hours for the special one-day event are from 8am  a.m. to 8 p.m. (hours vary by tunnel wash location).

For the past eight years Seattle-based Brown Bear has provided over 200,000 free washes on the company’s anniversary and Veterans Day. Last year’s anniversary event alone generated 27,223 complementary washes.

“We blend hard work, pride and a lot of fun into an event that benefits our customers and the environment. It’s a fitting way to say ‘thank you’ to our customers who have supported us over the past 57 years,” said Brown Bear founder Vic Odermat.
Odermat started Brown Bear in Seattle with one location at 15th Ave West in Seattle. Brown Bear now owns and operates car washes throughout the Puget Sound area and Spokane.

The family-owned company, through its parent company, Car Wash Enterprises, Inc., owns and operates a total of 41 car wash facilities in Washington State as well as a large network of gas stations and convenience stores.  It is one of the largest privately held car wash chains in the U.S. and is widely recognized within the industry as being a leader in the environmental movement.

Flood control board recommends grant for City of Kenmore

The Executive Committee of the King County Flood Control District approved, and sent to the full Flood Control District Board of Supervisors, recommendations for grants aimed at reducing the impacts of local flooding. The funds, approved at the Executive committee’s August 18 meeting, are from the newly created grant program and will focus on flood prevention as well as flood mitigation.

The new grant program targets flood reduction projects throughout King County. A total of $2.6 million in grants are available in 2014, with the funds being awarded on a competitive basis by the Flood Control District. Eligible applicants included homeowner associations, private non-profit organizations or associations, schools, special districts, tribes and King County jurisdictions. Funded projects must be completed within 36 months of receiving funds.

The list of recommended projects includes the City of Kenmore which was recommended for $330,000 grant for the NE 192nd St Culvert Replacement. Little Swamp Creek regularly exceeds the current capacity of the existing culvert and floods over the roadway of NE 192nd St. The City is looking to install a culvert to eliminate the flooding at this location. The culvert must be fish‐passable to meet state Department of Fish and Wildlife requirements.

“Alabama Band Bandit” bank robber caught

Arrested
The man suspected of robbing at least five banks last month was arrested Tuesday by the Snohomish County Violent Offender Task Force (SCVOTF) near 128th St SW and I-5 around 1pm.

Nicknamed the “Alabama Band Bandit,” the 40 year-old Woodinville man was believed responsible for the following bank robberies:
  • Mon, July 7 – Bank of America, Martha Lake Branch, 164th St SW in Lynnwood
  • Fri, July 11 – Whidbey Island Bank, North Seattle Branch, Ballinger Way NE in Shoreline
  • Fri, July 18 – Washington Federal, Meridian Street in Bellingham
  • Fri, July 25 – Washington Federal in Bellingham
  • Wed, July 30 – Wells Fargo on 164th St SW in Lynnwood
Area law enforcement had been on the look-out for the suspect. Earlier in the day a vehicle believed to be associated with the suspect was located in Burlington. However, the suspect managed to evade authorities and escaped the area.

Meanwhile, the SCVOTF identified another vehicle associated with the suspect and located that vehicle near the 100 block of 128th St SE in Snohomish County.

When the suspect arrived in the area, the task force attempted to take him into custody. The suspect fled the area on foot, but was apprehended after a K9 unit tracked him to the 12700 block of 3rd Ave W. A gun that the suspect threw during the chase was recovered.

The suspect has been turned over to the FBI. He was dubbed the “Alabama Band Bandit” because of the hat he wore during one of the robberies.

Several agencies have been involved in the bank robbery investigation, as well as searching for the suspect, including the FBI’s Seattle Safe Streets Task Force, King County Sheriff’s Office, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Bellingham Police, Mt. Vernon Police, Burlington Police and Child Protective Services.

The SCVOTF is a multi-agency unit partnership with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Corrections.

Massy Ferguson set to rock Cromwell Park Wednesday

Massy Ferguson free concert Wednesday

Concerts in the Park: Massy Ferguson, Wednesday, August 20, 7pm: Rain or Shine, Cromwell Park, 18030 Meridian Ave next to Courthouse.

Massy Ferguson is a bar band in the best sense — not a band relegated to bars because it will never rise higher, but a band that plays music perfectly suited to dark, crowded rooms in which there’s at least a possibility of a beer glass smashing against a wall.

The songs, filled with barflies, broken hearts and doomed late-night romance, would sound pretty good anywhere, though. Singer-bassist Ethan Anderson says the sound is Americana that leans more toward rock than country, and that’s a pretty good description. Think Drive-By Truckers or some combination of Son Volt and The Hold Steady. Think Springsteen’s “Greetings From Asbury Park” or “Nebraska.” Those are all influences, as is 1970s Southern rock and good-time classic rock bands like Thin Lizzy.

If that means Massy Ferguson is derivative, well, that’s partly true. It doesn’t really matter, though, because the songs, if not particularly groundbreaking, are just plain good. And the lyrics are full of enough detail and imagery that you start to forget any objections.

Join your friends and neighbors for this great concert under the open sky. All events in the Arts Council's Concerts in the Park series are free and start at 7p.m. rain or shine  For more information, or to see the full summer line-up visit the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s website

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations.

Call for volunteers: Help tally Washington’s cyclists and walkers this fall

One, two...
Preparations underway for 2014 bicycle, pedestrian count Sept. 30–Oct. 2

During a three-day survey last year, volunteers counted nearly 66,000 bicyclists and pedestrians across Washington. As another survey cycle approaches, about 400 volunteers will be called upon again this fall to tally the number of people who ride a bike or walk to their destinations.

“As an avid cyclist, I have an appreciation for the many volunteers who help with this annual count,” said Washington State Department of Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson. “Knowing where people are and how they are using the transportation system helps us measure the results of bike and sidewalk investments and plan for future projects.”

For the seventh annual survey, WSDOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club are enlisting volunteers and organizations such as Feet First and Washington Bikes to help count the people they see bicycling and walking along paths, bike lanes, sidewalks and other facilities Tuesday, Sept. 30, through Thursday, Oct. 2. Counts will be taken at assigned locations in nearly 40 cities throughout the state.

Get involved

WSDOT’s count is part of the National Documentation Project, an annual bicycle and pedestrian count and survey effort sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers Pedestrian and Bicycle Council. The count will also help measure WSDOT’s progress toward its goal of increasing bicycling and walking while reducing the number of vehicle miles driven.

WSDOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club are asking volunteers from across the state to perform the counts in participating cities, including Lake Forest Park, Mountlake Terrace, Seattle, and Shoreline.

Those interested in helping can learn more by visiting WSDOT’s survey website, emailing the Cascade Bicycle Club or calling 206-861-9890.

From my front yard in Richmond Beach Monday evening.

After a very warm day in Shoreline, the sun slipped behind the Olympic Mountains. A storm was brewing, you could feel it in the air. Off in the distance but getting closer were flashes of lightning followed by quiet rumblings, the sound of God moving the furniture around in Heaven perhaps... a quick downpour and then off to the north it went... but all the while, it remained plenty warm enough to stay outside late into the night watching, listening, thinking...  Lois Jamieson

Amateur band radio license courses starting Sept 29 in Brier

The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency (ESCA) is offering two amateur radio license courses starting Monday, September 29, 2014 to prepare students for the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) license examination.

Courses for the entry and mid-level license convene simultaneously Monday evenings, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Brier City Hall for eight consecutive weeks. The courses conclude with FCC exams scheduled on November 17.

The Brier City Hall address is 2901 228th Street, SW, Brier, WA 98036. The courses are free with the exception of a $25.00 text book and $15.00 FCC exam fee.

The beginner level amateur band radio license is required for entry into the fascinating hobby of “ham” radio. It’s all about getting on the air and communicating with a region-wide network of ham radio operators for fun, providing communications for charity events or helping governments transmit vital disaster response information when telephones fail.

Those already holding the prerequisite license may attend the separate, but simultaneous mid-level license course. These license holders enjoy greater power output and frequency privileges required for world-wide communications.

The textbooks for both courses are available through the ESCA office for the discounted price of $25 for the Technician and $30 for the General books.

Contact the Course Manager, Vickie Fontaine, at 425-776-3722, to register or ask questions about getting started in amateur band radio.

The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency was created by the cities of Brier, Edmonds, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Woodinville, and the Town of Woodway to provide city government disaster planning, mitigation, response, and recovery services.

Northshore CERT class starts Sept 18 in Kenmore

Disasters can happen anytime, anywhere. As we have seen in the wake of SR 530 mudslide, Hurricane Sandy and other recent events, it may take hours to days for emergency responders to meet the needs of the public following a major disaster.

The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency (ESCA), located in the City of Brier, is offering disaster preparedness classes to King and Snohomish county residents.  CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training is about keeping yourself and your family safe and assisting others until help arrives.

Professional first responders, Emergency Managers and CERT Instructors teach students to extinguish small fires, provide life-saving first aid, conduct urban search and rescue, and perform other vital skills needed to help themselves and others after a disaster.

The course begins Thursday, September 18, 7:00pm –10:00pm and continues over eight consecutive Thursday nights. The last class on November 6th is a disaster simulation for students to practice what they have learned over the eight week course.

Classes convene at the Northshore Fire Department Headquarters, Station 51, 7220 NE 181st Street, Kenmore.

ESCA is currently accepting CERT class registrations. To register, contact Vickie Fontaine at 425-776-3722.

Monster Movie double feature Thursday in Lake Forest Park

Don't bring the kids to this one
Nosferatu showing in Lake Forest Park

MONSTER MOVIE Double Feature: Little Shop of Horrors (1956) and Nosferatu (1920) hosted by University of Washington Bothell Monster Movie Morality Students

Students from the University of Washington Bothell enrolled in the course, Monster Movie Morality, will present their research papers and host a discussion around two classic films, the 1960 version of Little Shop of Horrors and the cult classic, Nosferatu (1922).

This screening is free and open to the public. Join us on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 7:00-10:30pm at the Lake Forest Park City Hall - Council Chambers, 17425 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

These films were selected by the students to curate as the public part of a film festival. The students have written academic papers researching topics related to the films and to the idea of morality. These papers will be presented as part of the presentation and there will be a brief Q/A after each screening.

In the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors, Skid Row florist Seymour Krelborn cares for a strange, carnivorous plant. Faced with the threat of losing his job, Seymour is forced to decide just how far he's willing to go to keep his flesh-eating plant alive. This film is unrated, but has some violent themes that may not be appropriate for all ages. We recommend treating it as a PG rating. It will begin at 7pm.

Screening will begin at 8:30pm.

This double feature movie event is co-hosted by the UWB Office of Community-Based Learning and Research and The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council.

St. Dunstan's to host weekly free dinners for neighbors

On Tuesday evening, August 19th from 5:30 to 7:00pm, St. Dunstan's church will begin hosting a FREE weekly dinner for the local neighborhood community.

All neighbors are welcome, regardless of religious beliefs or affiliations. This community dinner has evolved as an extension of the current weekly Tent City dinner program that St. Dunstan's initiated in 2012 to address expanding local hunger needs and promote neighbor connections in the community.

The new Tuesday evening community dinner is intended to be a self-sustaining, community-based event, supported by individual and group donations and served in the St. Dunstan's Church building, putting their well-equipped commercial kitchen to good use.

Current financial donations for this expansion have come from private residents, and food donation support is currently provided by Shoreline Safeway stores.

More volunteers and ongoing donations are always welcome.  More information can be found at their webpage.
