City of Kenmore makes a splash with Waterfront acquisition

The City of Kenmore recently purchased 0.65 acres of waterfront property located at 7353 NE 175th Street at the confluence of Swamp Creek and the Sammamish River, near Squires Landing Park in Kenmore.

The newly acquired property will serve a variety of park functions, including a bird and wildlife viewpoint, launching point for hand-powered watercraft, picnic area and connection to Squires Landing Park. The property is immediately available for public use and includes a floating dock and waterfront activities center provided by the Kenmore Canoe and Kayak Club. A dedication event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26 at 6:00pm at the new property.

In response to the public’s desire for more waterfront access, the City purchased the property for $640,000 plus closing costs in early July. On July 28, following a formal Request for Proposals process, the City Council approved an agreement with the Kenmore Canoe and Kayak Club (KCKC) to provide a waterfront activities center at the newly acquired property.

KCKC will provide public recreational programming and instruction for hand-powered watercraft activities including kayaking, canoeing, dragon boat racing and potentially rowing and standup paddle boarding in the future. While the emphasis will be on youth activities, instruction and classes will be provided for all ages and skill levels including free or deeply discounted classes and memberships for low income youth and families. The property was purchased using Park Impact Fee revenue from the construction of new residential development, and the Park Impact Fee revenue can only be used for park property acquisitions and new park development.

KCKC’s youth team is under the USA Canoe/Kayak umbrella, which is Team USA’s feeder organization for Olympic athletes. As the team grows, team members will have opportunities to race regionally, nationally and internationally. Most of KCKC’s board members are Kenmore residents.

Fong Ng of the Seattle Flying Dragon Boat Club is pleased that his organization is included in this partnership. At least one dragon boat will be stored on the new park property, and a Kenmore dragon boat team will be forming in the near future.

“We have a very successful dragon boat program on Lake Union, and we are excited to grow this very fun and social sport by bringing it to Kenmore,” said Ng.

For more information about Kenmore Canoe and Kayak Club or to sign up for the team or classes, email northshoreck@gmail.com or visit the KCKC website

First Annual Richmond Beach “Beach to Bluff, Bust Your Buns” Run

You think you’re tough? Put your butt muscles to the test at the First Annual “Beach to Bluff, Bust Your Buns Run” Sunday, Aug. 17 at 8am at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline. Registration begins at 7am.

“This is intense, but possible” said Jack Malek, run organizer and longtime Richmond Beach resident. “I see people out here every day running the 188 stairs, biking the hill or strolling the bluff. This run puts it all together for two miles.”

Lamont Thomas
Richmond Beach’s famous “Running Man” Lamont Thomas serves as Master of Ceremonies. He will kick off the run at the beach. From the Giant Totem, runners will head across the railroad track bridge, up the hill and out to the bluff. They’ll return via the 188 Stairs of Death passing by the popular outdoor Tidal Tempo piano, one of eleven painted pianos strategically located throughout Shoreline for the summer.

While the race isn't timed, participant’s names will be entered into a drawing to win gift cards to local Richmond Beach restaurants and coffee bars. Vendors with free chair massages and other booths will be set up in the parking lot for post-run enjoyment.

If runners aren't too tired, they are invited to stick around for the annual Sandcastle Building contest which begins at nearly the same spot at 11:30am.

Richmond Beach is a neighborhood within the City of Shoreline and home to nearly a dozen popular community events. It was named the Best Place to live by Seattle Met Magazine in 2010.

FBI offers reward for information leading to arrest of bank robber

$5,000 reward
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the individual responsible for five bank robberies within one month. The Seattle Safe Streets Task Force is seeking information about this bank robber, nicknamed the “Alabama Band Bandit.”

Get-away car in Jul 11 Shoreline robbery

This bank robber got his nickname because of the baseball hat he wore during the July 11 robbery. It has the Alabama band’s name on it in its characteristic font.

The subject may be a white male wearing a wig, glasses, and some sort of hat. He has implied that he has a weapon and threatened tellers.

July 18 get-away car

The Alabama Band Bandit appears to be working with a white female accomplice, who has driven a getaway car for at least two bank robberies. On July 11, she drove the Bandit away from the bank robbery in what appears to be a blue-green, early 1990s-model Nissan Pathfinder. On July 18, she appears behind the wheel of what appears to be a green Land Rover Discovery.

Appearance during July 25 robbery

The task force is hoping for any information that can identify the Alabama Band Bandit or his accomplice. The unidentified bank robber is believed to have robbed at least five different banks within one month, most recently on July 30 at a Lynnwood, WA Wells Fargo.

The subject is wanted for his alleged involvement in at least five bank robberies:
  • Mon, July 7 – Bank of America, Martha Lake Branch, 164th St SW in Lynnwood
  • Fri, July 11 – Whidbey Island Bank, North Seattle Branch, Ballinger Way NE in Shoreline
  • Fri, July 18 – Washington Federal, Meridian Street in Bellingham
  • Fri, July 25 – Washington Federal in Bellingham
  • Wed, July 30 – Wells Fargo on 164th St SW in Lynnwood
Anyone with information as to the identity or whereabouts of the suspected robber should refrain from approaching him and is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.

Anyone with information that can help identify this individual is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $1000 if the information given leads to an arrest and charge of the person(s) involved. This is in addition to the reward of up to $5,000 being offered by the FBI.

The Seattle Safe Streets Task Force includes members from the FBI, Bellevue Police Department, Auburn Police Department, King County Sheriff’s Office, and Seattle Police Department.

Super Moons

As expected, our own Moon Man, Jerry Picard, was out in the dark getting shots of the Super Moon on Sunday, just after dark. He also captured a drone but that's another story.

According to Wikipedia, "A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth."

No one says anything about the colors. The photo we posted on Sunday night showed a deep orange moon. Jerry sent three shots with the moon appearing to be a different color in each shot.

Drone over Shoreline

Drone over Shoreline

By Jerry Pickard

While I was getting my supermoon shots from the Ballinger Terrace shopping center about ten minutes after nine on Sunday, I noticed am unusual flying object about 2000 feet up that was changing positions unlike a normal aircraft, up, down, and sideways in a way that got my attention.

I focused on it with my best telephoto lens and all I could make out was red and green lights flashing. After I got home and downloaded the day's pictures I cropped the picture and when I printed I discovered it was a Quadcopter drone with a camera attached to the bottom of the craft.

It was right on the border between Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline.

Newborn screening rule on Board of Health August agenda

Aligning the newborn screening rule with recent legislation will be subject to a public hearing before the Board of Health at its meeting on Wednesday in Olympia.

During the 2014 legislative session, SHB 2544 was passed that made changes to RCW 70.83. The law, effective June 12, 2014, requires health care providers and hospitals to submit blood samples to the Department of Health within 48 hours of a child’s birth. It also requires that the family be notified of potential abnormalities.

These changes help ensure that more infants are screened regardless of their place of birth, and that parents and guardians receive test results quickly. A delayed test result or lack of a newborn screening test can put an infant at serious risk of disability or even death. The public can comment on these changes at 1:30pm.

The board will meet from 9:30am to 2:50pm on Wednesday at the Cherberg Building, Senate Hearing Room 3 Capitol Campus, located 304 15th Ave SE. The public is welcome to attend and will be given an opportunity to provide testimony on any public health issue.

Copies of the agenda and related materials are available by contacting the board at 360-236-4100 or on the Board of Health website. The emergency and media contact number for the board during the meeting is 360-701-2398.

Shoreline artist has paintings in Georgetown show

Sunday, August 10, 2014

Painting by Amy Pleasant

Shoreline artist Amy Pleasant is part of a new art exhibit at the Georgetown Castle in Seattle which opened on August 9.

Her paintings reflect her life experience and adventures as part of a blended family.
"As we all  struggled, learned and grew I knew then that someday there would be art from this experience."

She explains the background for the topics of the paintings:
The paintings I have done for Continental Shift reflect the first year our new family formed in 2004. My husband was in the Army Reserves as the war in Iraq was gearing up.  The last thing he said to me before we walked down the aisle was, "I promise I won't be deployed". Of course, that is a promise no soldier can make and he was gone six months later. I was thrown the curve of parenting his two children and my own biological son. At the time, it was so strange to be suddenly raising these children who felt more like strangers than family. I have described it as being thrown into the deep end of the stepparenting pool.

Paintings by Amy Pleasant
“Family Circus”,"High Wire", "Deployment" and "Odd Man Out" (above) seemed the most appropriate metaphor to describe my experience of ever seeking balance for the family and myself.

Paintings by Amy Pleasant
The "Day One" series (above) which includes “Fairytale Ending”, "Loyalties" and "Tie that Binds" reflect the push and pull of divided loyalties, new roles and life transitions that non biological families experience when families are formed. The journey is ongoing, however, the art captures a moment.

On the Mayor's Mind - Night Out, Jazz Walk, Celebrate Shoreline

City Manager Debbie Tarry

On the Mayor's Mind
August 11, 2014
By Shoreline Mayor Shari Winstead

It’s hard to believe we are half way through August already. We’ve certainly been fortunate to have beautiful weather this Summer, and it looks like it’s going to continue through Shoreline’s birthday week - Shoreline is 19 years old!

I hope your neighborhood held one of the 51 National Night Out Against Crime block parties, held last Tuesday. The Chief of Police, the City Manager and I visited three of the parties, but every party that officially registered with the City had a police officer or a City staff leader visit. It was, as always, great to talk with folks, and to hear so many people say how much they love living in Shoreline. We had three specific messages to share.

First, if you see something strange in your neighborhood, call 911 - many of us hesitate to call 911 because we don’t feel our situation rises to the level of “911”. Let the dispatcher or police make that decision. Trust your gut. If it doesn’t look right, it’s probably not. You may remember my story a few weeks back about the stolen car on my street. (See previous story)

Second, organize your neighborhood for Shoreline Watch - formerly known as a “block watch” - it’s the same thing, it’s just more specific to Shoreline. Knowing your neighbors is the best way to stay safe and secure.

And last, be informed - sign up for Alert Shoreline. This is the City’s main way to communicate emergency information, in real time. You can get the info by text, email or a voice message. Street closures, a fire in a neighborhood, cancellations of events, why a helicopter is hovering overhead, etc. It’s the best way to stay informed.

Mayor Shari Winstead with chalk artist Gabrielle Abbott

We also kicked off Celebrate Shoreline week with Arts Al Fresco last Thursday night. Hopefully you’ve noticed some of the new sculptures along the Interurban Trail at Town Center - between 175th and 185th, and if you haven’t had a chance to check out the chalk masterpiece on the Interurban Trail (at about 177th), it is a must see!  But see it today, it will be gone soon! Because it really is chalk!

This week is sure to be fun, and I hope to see you out and about! After our Council meeting on Monday night (if you are interested in the land use zoning around the 185th Street light rail station, you should be attending), we’ve got the North City Jazz Walk on Tuesday night, with more venues, more music and more food than before (link), several neighborhood get-togethers and of course the official Celebrate Shoreline festival!

The fun kicks off on Friday with the Skate Park competition, and on Saturday, the best and biggest party of all - CELEBRATE SHORELINE at Cromwell Park, from 11am- 8pm. Fun for the whole family, with music all day, a beer garden (and a root beer garden!), games, pony rides, booths, food, a classic car show - you name it, we got it! I’m particularly excited as this is the first year for our Kids’ Move challenge, and I’m hoping lots of kids will be turning in their activity forms and entering to win one of four scooters and helmets! Don’t miss the Sand Castle contest on Sunday, and prior to that, the first ever Bust Your Buns beach to bluff run (or walk!)

I’ll see you there!

A Night Out brings neighbors together

Shoreline Officer Steve Perry told
stories to the kids at Shoreline Park

All over the area on Tuesday evening, streets were closed, tables were set up on lawns, and neighbors gathered together for the National Night Out Against Crime.

The premise is simple. Neighbors who know each other watch out for each other. The event helps neighbors meet and get to know each other. This year’s focus was on burglary prevention, special events within the city, and communication.

Shoreline had 51 registered block parties and Lake Forest Park had 23. There may have been more - those who didn't need to close a street and didn't let the police know about their event.

Lake Forest Park Police made it to 22 of the 23 parties. Shoreline sent Police Officers, City staff members, and the Mayor and made it to all 51 parties.

National Night Out is a national campaign that brings neighbors together to talk about crime prevention within their neighborhoods and within the city.

Shoreline Officer Perry had a rapt audience of small children at the Shoreline Park party organized by Shawn Van Horn.

Echo Lake Board member Nan Colton reports that "He was informative and entertaining. Police car lights were flashing all the time, making the whole experience very real."

One of the best-kept secrets of Night Out is just how good the food is. All the neighbor Foodies bring out their best stuff. If you are lucky enough to have a restaurant on your block, such as Patty Pan in Briarcrest, or a BBQ king like Ray Webber, so much the better.

For information about forming block watches and being prepared for next year's Night Out, contact your police department.

Reminder: pavement project begins Aug 11 on I-5 through Shoreline

Pavement is cracked and failing

A new pavement preservation project begins on I-5 in Seattle and Shoreline Monday.

Beginning August 11 contractor crews will start replacing more than 300 old, cracking and failing concrete panels that make up the I-5 roadway.

The work is located between SR 104 at the King-Snohomish County line and Northeast 117th Street near Northgate. Crews will start in the southbound lanes and then work northbound. After the concrete panel work is done at the end of October, the crews are scheduled to start grinding the highway. The grinding will start no earlier than Nov. 1.

The project will also add a new overhead electronic sign near Northeast 155th Street which will display travel times and messages. Durable, high visibility striping will be added in spring 2015.

"Thank you in advance for your patience as we begin this work that is so important to keeping commuters and freight moving on I-5."
