Matter of Balance class starting in September at Senior Center

Saturday, August 9, 2014

A Fall Matter of Balance class will be starting on Wednesday, September 10 and continue through to October 29 at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

This is an 8 hour class, meeting from 12:30-2:30pm. The class includes one hour of exercise and one hour of discussion and includes breaks.

There is no fee for this important class for seniors; funding is provided by the Shoreline Fire Department. Toshiko Aramaki is the trained and experienced instructor.

It has been found that seniors who continue to exercise and learn about how to prevent falls are more likely to be able to stay healthy and at home. Many seniors experience fear of falling and restrict their activities. The advantage of a Matter of Balance class includes managing concerns about falls and emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear and increase activity levels.

Participants learn to view falls and fear of falls as controllable by setting realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn exercises to increase strength and balance.

The program was developed by the Royal center at Boston University and is nationally recognized as an outstanding program that promotes fall prevention.

To register call the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center at 206-365-1536 or in person at the center located in the southern-most building of the Shoreline center, 18560 1st AVE NE #1.

City Manager's report

Shoreline City Manager's report
by Debbie Tarry

Council Meetings

August 11
·         Dinner Meeting – Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act training with Boards and Commissions (Planning Commission, PRCS Board, and Library Board). Those not able to attend will need to complete the training on-line.
·         Regular Meeting:
o   Contract with Transmap Corporation: This item is to authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract with Transmap Corporation in the amount of $127,003.68 for professional services needed to complete the Pavement Management and Right-of-way (ROW) Asset Inventory Project. The project will complete a citywide pavement condition assessment and collect and incorporate ROW asset data into the City’s asset management system.
o   Kamins Construction Contract Contingency: The Citywide Safety Improvement Project has been constructed by Kamins Construction Company. During construction unforeseen conditions were encountered that needed to be addressed that increased project costs. Most specifically, the existing infrastructure for the traffic signal at N Dayton and Richmond Beach Road was inadequate and did not meet acceptable standards. The original contingency of $50,000 has been exceeded and the Contractor contingency is requested to be increased to $58,035. There are sufficient funds available within existing projects to absorb these additional costs. As this is the final project pay request, no additional contingency will be necessary on this project.
o   Discussion of the 185th Station Subarea Plan Preferred Alternative: The Council will discuss the preferred alternative that should be used for the Final Environmental Impact Statement analysis (FEIS). The Planning Commission (PC) made additional proposed changes to the station area zoning map at the Public Hearing on July 10. Given that the PC made changes that were not previously published to the public, Councilmembers have expressed interest in waiving Council rules on August 11 to allow public comment after the staff presentation on this item. Council will make the selection of the Preferred Alternative on August 25.
o   Discussion of 2015-2020 CIP: The 2015-2020 CIP will be submitted to Council for review and approval in October along with the 2015 Operating Budget.

RWD Assumption and Boundary Review Board Process
The City submitted a brief for the hearing at the Snohomish County Boundary Review Board. Olympic View Water & Sewer District also submitted a brief. We have not received a copy of the position statement from Snohomish County yet.

Aurora and Landscape
A south section of Aurora between 145th and 155th had a main break going into the 90 degree heat wave we had right after the 4th of July. This meant we could not run irrigation for Aurora landscape in this area until it was fixed. Some of the groundcover did not handle this well, but we believe it is recovering. The next section between 155th and 165th, runs off the same controller, so we had to find a loaner controller (which the School District provided). The rest of Aurora north of 165th has a buried drip irrigation system that has been problematic with breaks which are not evident until we see distress in the plants. Also trees and plants located in rain gardens and other surface water features do not have any irrigation at all. Our roads crews have put water bags on most of the trees on the north section and they have hand watered during the hot weather. Staff will be developing a plan on how this should be addressed in future years.

This and That
·         National Night Out Against Crime – A total of 51 registered NNO parties were held in Shoreline Tuesday night! Each one received a visit from a Shoreline Police Officer, a City staff member, or the Mayor!
·         Swingin’ Summer Eve – After discussing the potential of rescheduling this event with staff and the Arts Council we have determined that we will not be able to reschedule. The close proximity to Celebrate Shoreline and other events planned for the rest of the summer really limit the potential times to reschedule and the resources to promote and inform the community about the rescheduled event.
·         Into the Woods – Have you got your “free” reservations for this production (August 8/9, 15/16, 22/23)? It will be performed in the City Hall plaza at 8 p.m. on each of those evenings. Today were told that there are already 300 reservations so far! Here’s a link.

Puget Sound Dahlia Show in Shoreline Aug 23-24

Once again, Sky Nursery will burst out in a sea of color when the Annual Dahlia Show arrives over the weekend of August 23-24.

The Puget Sound Dahlia Association - the region's leading dahlia club - will spare no effort to bring thousands of dahlias to this event.

Show hours at Sky are 9 - 6 on Saturday and 9 - 4 on Sunday. There also is a free presentation on dahlia cultivation (Saturday at 1:30pm) and visitors can meet with the dahlia experts at the PSDA info booth. Enjoy the perfectly-grown blooms, bountiful baskets and artful arrangements, take notes on which varieties to buy, and focus on photography, since Sky's vast greenhouse allows natural lighting to bring out the best color of these floral fireworks.

Cooking local: Tomatoes and Zucchini Already?

Tomatoes and Zucchini Already?
Photo and text by Greta Hardin

Tomatoes! Well … Cherry Tomatoes! For a town that is used to local tomatoes tiptoeing in at the end of August, this year’s tomato crop looks to be epic. The cherry tomatoes are already showing up willy-nilly and it is time to enjoy the bounty.

Now, with the tomatoes comes its sunshine buddy, zucchini. I confess, I had long been a zucchini avoider, a “barely-tolerater”, someone who would work around or through it, but not enjoy it… until recently.

It is a vegetable (well, fruit – seeds on the inside, but I’ll let it slide this time) that does not improve by sitting around. It gets a spongy and bitter. Those zucchini I’d been dealing with for years from the grocery store, those were the culprit. I have never understood why, other than obligation , someone would, on purpose, voluntarily pay for and eat zucchini. It wasn’t until I was faced with farm fresh zucchini that came in my weekly veggie box that I had to confront this food nemesis and figure out how to make it good.

For me the key was messing around with zucchini long enough to discover that it is one of those foods that can be cooked both too much and not enough.

When it is tiny and tender and sweet and crunchy raw, it should be barely cooked – merely charred on the outside, and the inside should be sweet and crunchy, almost cucumber-like. When these small sweet ones are cooked to softness, it is a pity. So char them and eat them crunchy – that was my first revelation.

The second revelation was the bigger zucchini. They still have that sweetness, but it is buried and must be coaxed out. When not cooked long enough the large amounts of water makes the cooked zucchini somewhat bland and bitter. Incompletely cooked eggplant suffers from this as well. But that is another column for another day.

The answers for larger zucchini: cut them smaller – and use a cast iron or other heavy pan. And cook them longer. The results are almost unexpected; a deep, delicious zucchini tomato sauce you will be proud to share.

Charred Zucchini and Tomato Sauce

Ingredients:

  • zucchini – 2 banana sized
  • cherry tomatoes – 1 pint (2 cups, same thing)
  • garlic – 2 cloves finely chopped or pressed
  • red wine – ½ C
  • salt – to taste
  • oil – 1.5 tsp and 1.5 tsp and 2 tsp
  • water – as needed
Optionals – tasty bread to char or delicious noodles or polenta, and excellent mozzarella (worth it this time).

Equipment:

  • heavy sauté pan – cast iron is best for the charring
  • 2nd sauté pan (optional – but it allows you to work on the two vegetables at the same time)
  • lid or other splatter guard (optional)
  • cutting board
  • knife
  • spatulas or stirring spoons

Prep:

Rinse off the zucchini, rubbing off any prickly hairs. Trim off the ends, and cut the sides to square off the sides. Cut into 2 or 3 rectangles so each zucchini is manageable.

You are going for diced cubes.

cubed zucchini

Slice each rectangular box into slices thinner than your pinky (about 4), tip this stack on its side, and do it again so you get sticks. Now cut these sticks into slices so you get cubes (or something like it). The most important part is that you have small pieces about the same size and shape so they all cook pretty quickly. The perfect cube will come with practice.

Smash or chop the garlic and rinse the tomatoes.

Cook:

(Note: if you have two sauté pans, cook both vegetables at the same time – and use the heavier pan for the tomatoes. Otherwise, just follow the recipe. Please don’t “throw it all in together” or the browning will not happen and it will be a very different sauce.)

Heat 1.5 tsp of oil in your heavy sauté pan over medium-high heat with a small piece of zucchini. When the test piece of zucchini is sizzling, add half of the zucchini and about ½ tsp of salt. Let the zucchini sit and cook for about 3 minutes – until a few pieces are starting to get a little browned. Stir the zucchini and continue to cook it until the pieces are getting browned again – and so on. If brown is sticking to the pan – this is good, and part of the plan.

browned zucchini

When the zucchinis thoroughly browned and soft, add ¼ of the wine to dissolved the brown stuck on stuff. If you need more liquid, add ¼ of water. Keep cooking until most of the brown is dissolved. Remove this zucchini sauce from the pan and repeat with the second half of the zucchini. If the tomatoes go here, wipe out any large amounts of zucchini, and move on to the tomatoes.

For the tomatoes, heat up the last 2 tsp of oil over high heat.

When the oil shimmers – about 4 minutes – add the cherry tomatoes whole. Let them sit for two minutes. Shake the pan to roll the cherry tomatoes. Let them cook until they char and burst.

burst tomatoes with garlic

Add the garlic, about a ½ tsp of salt, and cook it with the tomatoes until it mellows and the juice thickens.

Turn the heat down to low. Add the zucchini mixture back in, stir it together and taste for salt. Add a little carefully until it tastes just right.

Sauce ready!

I tried eating this Charred Tomato and Zucchini sauce on some grilled bread

grilled bread

and noodles with a little mozzarella. Wow, was it good!

In with the new: old concrete panels on I-5 in Shoreline get the heave ho

Crews removing concrete panels
south of Seattle

$12.2 million preservation project replaces hundreds of concrete panels and removes crack and bumps on more than seven miles of I-5 - ear plugs provided upon request

Decades of heavy use have taken a toll on Interstate 5 north of Seattle. The concrete is cracked, chipped and bumpy in many places. Now a new highway preservation project will address some of the worst areas between Northgate and Shoreline.

On Monday, August 11, contractor crews from Granite Construction Company will begin a $12.2 million project to replace more than 300 concrete panels between NE 117th Street and the King-Snohomish County line. In addition to panel replacement, crews will grind more four miles of southbound I-5 and more than three miles northbound to remove shallow cracks, bumps and create a smoother drive with better traction.

This section of I-5 sees an average of 182,000 trips each day. The concrete panels were installed between 1962 and 1964, but were only designed to last 20 to 25 years.

“The concrete is falling apart faster than it can be patched,” said Project Engineer John Chi. “Rain, freeze and thaw cycles have also taken a toll on I-5. By replacing the worst panels and grinding other areas, we can continue to keep traffic and freight moving on this vital and aging interstate.”

Closure information

The work will require nightly lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights and occasional Saturday night lane closures. Depending on the location, southbound lanes may begin closing at 7pm and northbound lanes at 8pm. Multiple ramps will also be closed nightly beginning at 9pm. Drivers will follow signed detours when ramps are closed. Except on weekend mornings, all lanes and ramps will reopen by 5am daily.

The work

The contractors will start by sawcutting the concrete panels. The first of the 300 panels will be lifted out and new panels poured on Wednesday, August 20. Crews will work on the southbound lanes of I-5 first and then replace panels in the northbound lanes. The panel replacement work is currently scheduled to end in late October. Beginning Nov. 1, the crews will start grinding the pavement.

The project will also add a new overhead electronic sign just south of Northeast 155th Street to display travel times and messages. The contractor crews will also pave several ramps. The project is scheduled for completion in late spring 2015 when durable high visibility striping is added.

Noise

Some of this work is unavoidably noisy, particularly the concrete grinding work. It is scheduled to occur during the colder months when people who live near the interstate are more likely to have their windows closed overnight. Nearby residents disturbed by the construction noise can call a 24-hour hotline to request earplugs. The hotline number is 206-440-4DOT (4368).

The project will extend the life of the freeway, reduce the need for costly and inconvenient emergency repairs and create a better driving surface for commuters.

Know before you go

Drivers should know before they go by planning ahead for lane and ramp closures related to this project. WSDOT has many resources and tools for drivers:
Drivers can also get updated information about this project and other state highway projects in the Seattle area by signing up for email updates.

Bartells conducts school supply drive for World Vision

Thursday, August 7, 2014

Shoreline Bartell Drugs in Gateway Plaza

Bartell Drugs welcomes donations of school supplies for its 11th annual “School Tools for Kids in Need,” August 10 through August 30 at Bartell’s 63 locations. The drive supports students in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties through World Vision’s Teacher Resource Center in Fife.

With the new school year approaching, donated school supplies help re-stock the Teacher Resource Center where teachers “shop” free of charge for school supplies to assist qualifying students.

According to Federal Way-based World Vision, a globally-known charitable organization, as many as 58,000 local students could begin the school year without the basic school supplies.

A “Basic Needs” list of suggested donation items can be found in Bartell’s “School Aisles.”

Bartell Drugs Shoreline store is located at 18420 Aurora Ave North in Gateway Plaza. Other nearby stores are in Westgate in Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace on 44th, and Lake City Way.

New Alaska Airlines commercials filmed at local school

Alaska Airlines will air three new commercials, starring Seahawk Russell Wilson putting Alaska employees through a training camp he designed.

According to their blog post:

"One hot summer day not long ago, 40 production crew members, 13 Alaska Airlines employees and one star quarterback gathered on a middle school football field in Seattle for an elite training camp.
"Champions never rest, after all, which is why we enlisted the support of our Chief Football Officer Russell Wilson to design a camp that only he could imagine.
"Wilson, the starting quarterback for the champion Seattle Seahawks, led Alaska employees through a high-stepping obstacle course, a lost teddy bear running drill, snack delivery accuracy training – #snackuracy – and more."

The "middle school football field in Seattle" was actually in Shoreline. The commercials were filmed earlier this summer at Kellogg Middle School, 16025 25th Ave NE.

Hot Music at Arts al Fresco Thursday

Fabulous pianos, fabulous musicians, fabulous art! It’s all free at Arts al Fresco on August 7th! You won’t want to miss this Celebrate Shoreline kick-off event at Shoreline City Hall and the Park at Town Center across the street.

Nelda Swiggett
On the Shoreline Rocks grand piano in the City Hall Courtyard, pianist Nelda Swiggett will perform primarily her own original music, a distinctive blend of her varied musical experiences, from jazz and salsa to gospel, classical and more.

She formed her first band in 1990, and has since performed at many of Seattle’s leading jazz clubs, concerts and festivals.

"Swiggett has a unique touch and intensely appealing pianism..." (All About Jazz). Her fourth CD, Blue-Eyed Painted Lady (OA2 Records 2014), has been called "Gorgeous" (Wondering Sound Reviews) and “Delightfully left of center…” (Midwest Record).

For Arts al Fresco she will be joined by her long-time bassist, Chris Symer.

Steve Flynn

Bringing life to the Red Brick Road on another artist-painted instrument, Fancy Footwork, pianist Steve Flynn will play boogie and swing for your listening and dancing pleasure.

"Steven Flynn has been playing piano and organ in clubs, theaters, festivals, and elsewhere on the Seattle music scene consistently for 40 years. He has been a mainstay with the notorious Jr. Cadillac since 1980, and has played with many, many Northwest bands in the blues, funk, rock-and-roll, jazz, New Orleans, rhythm-and-blues, and Americana genres, as well as backing Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Currently he plays with Jr. Cadillac, Alice Stuart and the Formerlys, the John Stephan Band, the Honky Tonkers, RockIt Science with Roger Fisher, as well as having a thriving career as a solo piano player and singer."

Ashley Webster
A third piano will be in action this year at the Gateway Plaza on Midvale at 185th. Catch Ashley Webster on the Infinite Arrangements /tangram piano or play it yourself.

Webster, a 2005 graduate of Shorewood High School, played with jazz choir and jazz band, gracing the stage at Carnegie Hall and competing in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Competition in New York City.

At Edmonds Community College, she played with Soundsation vocal jazz group, and the jazz combos, honing her musical skills and techniques through arranging jazz charts.

Webster has also been involved with such music groups as the Jim Cutler Orchestra, MusicWorks Jazz Band, Bellevue College Jazz Band, the Seattle Jazz Singers, Roadside Attraction and two salsa bands.

The Jazz Pearls is her main jazz combo, started in 2012; Ashley acts as musical leader, writing original tunes, arranging jazz charts and...of course...tickling the ivories!

Arts al Fresco, Thursday, August 7th 6:00-8:00 p.m. It’s the place to be!
