Ken Noreen receives HEART award for contribution to the arts

Ken Noreen accepts the HEART award in front of an appreciate audience

At the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Arts Council Gala for the Arts on June 7, 2014 at the Shoreline Center, well-known local musician and educator Ken Noreen was surprised with the HEART Award for livelong contribution to the arts.

Ken said, "I am thrilled and honored by this award. This is my 50th year in teaching in Shoreline in the arts and I still love being involved. The Shoreline Arts Council which I help start is the strongest local arts agency in the country and we need to keep supporting their efforts.
"My short bio is that Shoreline has been my teaching home exclusively. In 1962 I started teaching summer school for the district, did my student teaching in 1964 in Shoreline and signed my teaching contract for the fall of 1964. I taught 30 years for the district, 25 of those being as the Director of Bands at Shorecrest.
"I was also the Music Coordinator for many years until my retirement in 1994. That’s when I assumed the directorship of the Shoreline Concert Band. This group had started years earlier in 1984 with some help from me. It is and always has been a combination of Shoreline Community College students and community members.
"Today the group of about 70 musicians is about one third students at SCC and two thirds community members who get a chance to keep playing their instruments after college. I am an associate professor at SCC and have been for the past twenty years. This is a model now replicated around the state and country that enables the colleges to have a quality concert band, while still offering the community members who play band instruments an opportunity to keep playing. As a side note, we are always looking for new members. We start again in September."

Nature Speaks: Welcome the Return of Summer

Friday, June 20, 2014

May your life be like a wildflower,
growing freely in the beauty and joy of each day.
- Native American proverb

Nature Speaks: Welcome the Return of Summer
Article and photos by Jennifer Rotermund

June is the month of abundance and joy. You take dash of rain, a healthy pinch of warmer temperatures and several heaping tablespoons of daylight hours and you have the magical recipe for flowers, vegetables, fruit, and new growth everywhere. Almost all plants seem to know which element dominates this month as they bolt straight up toward the sun. In June, I harvest Strawberries like mad, and delight in the swelling Raspberries, Plums, Blueberries, Currants, Elderberries, and Apples following close behind. My herbs grow at a frenetic pace that I wish they could sustain year-round so that my natural pharmacy could always be this readily available and well-stocked.

Edible Nasturtium flower

This is the month of the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year for those of us in the northern hemisphere. The Great Medicine Wheel of the Earth has moved through Spring and stands fully open to the Southern Gate. Sun-worshipers delight in this time, as we enjoy 16 hours of daylight in the northwest. Even the Full Moon this month was known by our ancestors as the "Sun Moon" because the Sun dominates and delights every aspect of our lives in June. Reflecting this energy, our inner and outer light shines brightly this month as well. Just as each plant shares its unique flower or fruit with us, so too do we have the opportunity to recognize the unique gifts we have to share with the world.

Blueberries in June

As a gardener, I love growing food in abundance for my family, friends, and to give to a food bank. Even the wildlife eat especially well from my garden this month and hardly make a dent in the crops. I love feeding and caring for others with what I’ve grown myself. But I also delight in watching the role that everyone plays in my garden. Visiting Honey Bees are producing honey for my neighbors two doors down, Bumblebees pollinate all my flowers all day long, Hummingbirds zip through the air ridding it of unwanted insects, while Earth Worms aerate and amend the sun-warmed soil. We each have gifts and talents to offer the world; with June’s abundance and the joys of solstice, we are called to celebrate and share these gifts. What are yours?

Love in a Mist flower facing the June sun

Kruckeberg Gardens: Plant of the Month

Kruckeberg Gardens - June Plant of the Month
Cornus kousa

Plant Location: By parking lot and in courtyard.

Plant Notes: The Korean dogwood, or Cornus kousa, is a majestic tree that provides subtle color when it blooms in early summer.

Native to Korea, Japan, and China, its large white bracts resemble our native dogwood (Cornus nuttalli) but does not suffer from the anthracnose infections that trouble our native trees.

It is low maintenance, provides excellent fall color, and has striking red fruits. There are several specimens in the garden, and now is the time to enjoy their flowers.

The largest specimen is putting on quite a show in the parking lot ... you can view it by simply driving by.

This tree is available at MsK Nursery.

Kruckeberg Botanic Gardens is located at 20312 15th Ave NW, Shoreline, WA  98177.

Steamroller Printmaking at the Shoreline Arts Festival June 28 - 29

The Shoreline Community College Art Club is joining forces with the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council to host a Steamroller Printmaking Extravaganza at this year's Shoreline Arts Festival.

Steamroller Printmaking is always a crowd pleaser, and we think you’ll be delighted by what these students can do. They will be making huge woodcuts and then running them under the “press” of a steamroller! The printmaking instructor and art club advisor Natalie Niblack is heading up this student project and has asked a handful of printmakers in our community to also participate.

“For us as students, it will also be an exciting and challenging opportunity to experience printmaking on a large and public scale. We hope that the event will also increase awareness of the visual art programs at Shoreline CC and the support Shoreline gives to students involved in extra-curricular club activities”.  - Art Club Student

Join the fun - Hands-on Art for Adults.

The Shoreline Arts Festival has always had a vibrant Hands-On Art section for children, and with this year’s Steamroller Printmaking, the fun will be extended to Adults! So roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty with the woodblock workshop offered on a rolling bases by the SCC Art Club students.

So, what exactly is Steamroller Printmaking?

Steamroller Printmaking is a kind of relief printmaking, a printmaking process in which an image is drawn on a surface, and the negative or “white”  areas are carved away. The surface or plate is usually made of wood (wood block print or woodcut) or linoleum (linoleum block print or linocut).

The image is inked with brayers (rollers) and paper is laid over the surface. The image is transferred using some kind of pressure- sometimes a printing press, sometimes a baren (a disk covered with bamboo leaves). In this case the pressure is applied by running a steamroller (!!) over the paper and plate, sandwiched between layers of plywood and blankets. The woodcuts are very large, 2 X 4 ft, or 4 X 6 ft. The result is very dramatic when the large prints are peeled away from the plates and displayed.

Many thanks to Aurora Rents for not only generously donating the Steamroller (technically an asphalt paver) for this event, but also for not laughing us out of the room when we came to them and asked  “Can we borrow a steamroller for the weekend to make huge woodblock prints?”

The Shoreline Arts Festival is a FREE event that provides two extraordinary days of music, dance, theatre, literary arts, visual arts, and food, plus the Shoreline Philippine Festival. This creative community event, sponsored by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, will be held at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE. Visit the website for applications, deadlines, or additional information or call the Arts Council at 206-417-4645.

2014 Residential Valuation Notices Mailed to Central and East Shoreline Property Owners

On May 15th, King County Assessor Lloyd Hara’s office mailed the 2014 property valuations to all residential property owners in Area 1 – West Shoreline located in North King County. Area 1 residential property values increased by 15.6%.

On June 12th, King County Assessor Lloyd Hara’s office mailed the 2014 property valuations to all residential property owners in Area 2 Central Shoreline and Area 3 East Shoreline located in Northwest King County. Areas 2 and 3 residential property values generally increased by +16.2% but individual property values might vary.

Residential property is assessed each year at 100 percent of its true and fair market value in money, which is defined by Washington State law as the amount of money that a willing and unobligated buyer is willing to pay a willing and unobligated seller. Residential values are determined based on multiple sales of similar properties.

The King County Assessor’s Office annually revalues all properties and conducts a physical inspection on each property once every six years. The last physical inspection of the Central Shoreline area was conducted in 2008 and for East Shoreline, the last physical inspection was conducted in 2012.

“Continuing the 2013 trend, property values are increasing across King County as we emerge from the Great Recession,” said Assessor Lloyd Hara. “In 2013, we saw a residential increase in 76 out of 86 residential areas in King County and we expect to see continued growth in residential values for 2014.”

King County Assessor
Lloyd Hara
Assessor Lloyd Hara would like to remind all property owners to carefully review the information contained in the valuation notice. If you feel a mistake has been made in valuing your property, it is recommended that you contact the Assessor’s Office directly before filing an appeal at 206-296-7300 or by email.

Property owners can review their property information online using eReal Property and review our Area Reports on the Assessor’s homepage or with the Assessor’s staff to make sure an error has not been made. King County allows 60 days from the valuation’s postmark date to file an appeal with the King County Board of Equalizations.

Some low-income seniors, disabled veterans, or disabled persons retired because of a disability might be eligible for a property tax deferral or exemption. The King County Assessor’s Office encourages you or those you know to contact our office to determine eligibility.

For King County taxpayers who need advice and assistance on property tax related matters, including appeals, contact the King County Tax Advisor at 206-477-1060 or by email.

Rain City Rotary cleans up

Rain City Rotary members cleaned up the yard
at Pathways for Women

Text by Donna Eggen
Photos by Donna Eggen and Kim Lancaster

May was a busy month for Rain City Rotary. We did two projects!

First, we cleaned up the yard around Pathways for Women in Lynnwood. We filled a whole pickup truck with pine needles, pine cones, weeds and debris. Whew! The women who live at Pathways really appreciated all we do to keep the grounds looking nice.

RCR member Brad Lancaster says “Pathways for Women, which is a YWCA initiative, offers critical support to women and their children in crisis. Pathways creates domestic violence support groups, helps mothers create safety plans for themselves and their children, offers crisis counseling to women, and places women in emergency shelter. Rain City Rotary supports Pathways for Women’s efforts by helping maintain the organization’s exterior premises once or twice a year.”

Quarterly road cleanup on 15th NE

Second, we did our quarterly road cleanup along 15th Ave NE. Many hands made light work and we were done in a little over an hour. We made two interesting finds, some sort of animal skeleton and a pretty ring. We enjoy keeping our city looking nice.

RCR member Tom Andrews says “Littering is all too human. Cleaning up someone else’s litter provides an opportunity on the values we have as a society and on the need to be more sensitive to the environment we create for ourselves.”

Rain City Rotary meets most Thursday evenings at 6:30 either at the Shoreline City Hall or a local restaurant. One Saturday a month members join in doing a local service project. You are welcome to join us! Learn more here.

History Link: Under Attack

From our sister publication History Link comes this account of things they never told us in school - WW II attacks in the Pacific Northwest.

Immediately following America's entry into World War II in December 1941, Washingtonians anxiously watched the skies and coastal waters in case Japanese bombers and submarines mounted an attack. These fears were not unfounded -- the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton was a prime target, as was the Boeing plant in Seattle. Submarine nets were put in place to protect Bremerton, and the roof of Boeing's manufacturing facility was camouflaged to look like a residential area.

But guarding the coast was a bigger task, and most naval vessels were fighting far away in the Pacific. During the first week of June 1942, the merchant vessel SS Coast Trader was torpedoed near Cape Flattery, but all aboard were rescued. Two weeks later, on June 20, the Japanese military sank the freighter Fort Camosun -- again near Cape Flattery and again with no loss of life. The next day, a Japanese submarine shelled Fort Stevens at the mouth of the Columbia River, making it the only military installation in the continental United States to be attacked during the war.

By this time, the Puget Sound home front was on edge. Anti-aircraft guns were placed around Seattle and barrage balloons flew high, occasionally causing problems of their own. The only other major attacks on Northwest soil occurred late in the war in 1945, when incendiary balloons launched from Japan began landing throughout the Northwest. One such device killed Elsie Mitchell, formerly of Port Angeles, and five children from Oregon during a church outing to Gearhart Mountain in the south central portion of that state.

Echo Lake Park improvements coming this summer

Echo Lake Park

A number of improvements will be made to Echo Lake Park this summer including handicapped accessible porous asphalt pathway connections, improved handicapped accessible beach access, a tot play structure with safety surfacing, a re-graded / seeded open lawn area, irrigation system, benches, picnic tables, bike racks, a barbeque grill, and renovations to the existing restroom (one unisex stall design).

Construction will begin the week of June 23rd and be complete sometime in early September. The Interurban Trail will remain open during construction; however, the park and beach access to the lake is anticipated to be closed during most of the construction. We are sorry for the inconvenience; the city will provide access to these areas as soon as possible.

Construction must occur in the dry, warm weather conditions of summer to allow germination of the grass seed and to provide stable ground conditions for heavy equipment to pave pathways, and grade and lay underground utility and irrigation lines.

Echo Lake Park is located at 1521 North 200th Street at the northern section of the Interurban Trail. The Echo Lake Park Improvement project is being funded by the King County Trail and Park Levy that is intended to make improvements to facilities that improve our regional trail system. Echo Lake Park serves as the north Shoreline trailhead for the Interurban Trail with parking, restroom and other amenities for trail users. City staff worked with trail users, adjacent property owners, and the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association to develop a Master Plan to ensure that improvements met their needs. The Master Plan was adopted in 2013.

For construction updates visit this webpage.

If you have any questions about the project, contact Park Project Coordinator Maureen Colaizzi or 206-801-2603.
