Police arrest knife-wielding man on SCC campus

Shoreline Police arrested a 33-year-old man on the campus of Shoreline Community College Tuesday afternoon, June 10, 2014.

According to campus security personnel, the man approached a smoking shelter on the west side of campus, confronted several people in the shelter and brandished a knife. Witnesses said they didn’t know the man who is not registered as a student at the college.

The man left the smoking shelter and began walking east along an on-campus roadway. A campus security officer on regular patrol in a security vehicle was flagged down by those in the shelter who then reported the incident. The officer in the vehicle and two more security officers on foot who were called to assist, contacted the man at a second smoking shelter near the main entrance to the campus. Concerned by his behavior and the earlier report, the security officers handcuffed the man and called 911.

Within minutes, Shoreline Police responded with multiple officers. Police questioned the man and witnesses, then arrested the man and took him to King County Jail on suspicion of making threats, assault or attempted assault.

After three million steps, City challenges residents to keep moving

As part of its Healthy City initiative, the City of Shoreline and the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association challenged residents to take one million steps around Paramount School Park during the month of May.

One hundred and fifty-five people participated and logged a total of 3,330,200 steps! That is equal to 1,531 miles. Residents of all ages and abilities participated. In fact, the 7th best stepper, Sara E, is 84 years of age. She completed 115,275 steps.

In 2012, the City issued its first challenge to residents to climb one million stairs at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park during the month of June. Residents answered the call and made the one million steps by the 24th of the month. In 2013, determined to do even more, residents climbed 2,266,404 stairs. As a result of the overwhelming popularity of this challenge, this year's goal is 3,000,000 steps during the month of June.

In addition to the Step and Stair challenges, the City has also issued a Kids Move Challenge.

The City is challenging Shoreline kids to exercise at least 60 minutes a day for 30 days.

Kids completing the challenge can enter a chance to win one of four scooters and helmets at this year's Celebrate Shoreline Festival.

Copies of the Kids Move Challenge tracker form can be found online or in person at the Spartan Gym front desk.

Membership Luncheon, Wed. , June 11, 11:45 AM,
Shoreline Center, Alumni Room, $20, RSVP
Topic:  Happiness Starts With Gratitude

A fast paced presentation on the incredible transformative power of embracing gratitude.  Embracing an attitude of gratitude impacts owners, employers, employees and customers.

Having suffered numerous losses and traumatic setbacks, David speaks about his real-life experiences, and offers solutions that can impact lives.  By applying the lessons of living with gratitude, David illustrates how any situation in life, no matter how stressful or tragic, can be reframed and refocused into a fulfilling journey by using the simple principles of gratefulness.

Be prepared to look at your life differently, and experience the feeling of creating "an attitude of gratitude." It has the power to completely transform your outlook, your happiness, and your quality of life.  Gratitude can transform a life, change a life, and in some cases, save a life.

School board approves demo of buildings at Aldercrest Annex

Demolition in 2010

The Aldercrest Annex property in the Ballinger Neighborhood was the subject of much discussion when the school district proposed selling the site and neighbors wanted to preserve the land as a community park.

After many community meetings and discussions, it was agreed that any sale would include the provision that the open land be preserved for community use.

The unused buildings on site have been used by transients, wielders of spray paint cans, and arsonists. After an arson fire, a classroom building was demolished.

The Aldercrest Annex property remains in the ownership of the school district. The Shoreline School Board recently approved the demolition of the gymnasium and electrical building on site.

Neighbors should expect work to begin in a few weeks. Public access will be maintained to the field areas during the demolition.

Poem: Trees Dancing in the Breeze

Trees Dancing In The Breeze

Today I saw some trees,
As beautiful as could be,
They were dancing in the breeze!

I’m sure they knew I was there,
Because they could see the glaze of my stare!

To me it was a most entertaining surprise,
Anyone could tell from the stare of my eyes!

Many times I have passed these beautiful trees,
But today I realized they were dancing for me!

For a mesmerizing moment of pleasure,
Take a few moments each day to stare at their treasures!

You’ll find the dancing of trees more valuable than gold,
When you are young and especially when you are old!

©2014 Bob Barta

Envoi:  There is pure joy in all of nature
especially in the dancing of trees in a breeze!

Rat City Rollergirls - ruff and tumble at Key Arena June 7

Silicon Valley jammer finds resistance as she attempts to break free

Of all the bouts that I've seen, this night was the most ruff and tumble I have witnessed.

It also was full of penalties, but nonetheless one of the most aggressive and hard fought pair of contests.

There will be bruises tonight!

Rat City defeated Silicon Valley Rollergirls by a significant margin and the Rat City All Stars did the same with the Jet City (Everett) team.  The crowd was not so large but gave up continuous cheers and groans during a great evening of fast action sport.

HIT ME! said the sign, and so I did

Letter to the Editor: Proposed contract with TruGreen is very concerning

To the Shoreline City Manager, City Council, and Public Works Director,

I noticed in this week’s staff report that the City expects to contract with TruGreen for Landcare (Landscaping Services) for the City Right of Way.

I find this news very concerning for two reasons.

1) I recall in the City Manager’s report in the Shoreline Area News a mention that this service will include “herbicide” applications. And now that I see it is TruGreen that is the expected recipient of the contract I find it even more appalling.

Perhaps you are aware of the association of TruGreen with Scott’s/Miracle Grow and their parent company Monsanto? A few years ago Scott’s was sued by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon for selling poisoned bird seed marketed as “wildlife friendly” and ended up paying a huge fine due to the toxic nature of their product. Below are just two articles about the problems with this company.

TruGreen is well known for their applications of toxic agents, including Roundup and many other pesticides.

I find it troubling that the City of Shoreline is considering hiring this company when our Sustainability Strategy and so many other documents call for less toxic solutions in dealing with our infrastructure. We have pledged many times to us the least toxic methods of controlling weeds and doing our landscaping.

It is hard for me to believe that there are no other companies that we could hire that would do this work effectively, but who do not have a reputation for using these dangerous chemicals. And with our families walking along these same streets where TruGreen had done the yard work, I fear the impacts to their health, not to mention that of the pets and wildlife that also have habitat here. These chemicals will drain directly into our creeks and watersheds that already suffer from water quality problems.

2)   I also have a question about the $5000 for “plant replacement” and wonder which plants will need replacing and why?

I urge you to re-examine this contract and consider other alternatives that will be more in line with our community’s values.

I request that you refrain from having TruGreen do any spraying whatsoever on my street.

Old Roads, Tuberculosis and Murder Saturday at Museum - as well as old racing cars

Race cars at Shoreline Museum

The Shoreline Historical Museum will conduct a walking tour of the historic Hillwood - Richmond Highlands area on Saturday, June 14 as part of their Golden Wheels Day, which goes from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Golden Wheels Racing Pathfinders will hold a One-Day Exhibit of Playland Race Cars and other Historic Vehicles on Saturday, June 14 from 1-3pm where you can see the vehicles and talk to the drivers and owners.

People should meet at the Museum at 1:00pm for the Walk. “The Hillwood History Walk and Brickwalk Talk” will cover the Firlands Way-to-Fremont Avenue-to-185th (or vice versa) part of historic Richmond Highlands and features Old Roads, Tuberculosis and Murder!

The city renamed this neighborhood, but it is part of the original Richmond Highlands area.

Museum Director Vicki Stiles says that "Some people even have birth certificates that say they were born in Richmond Highlands – and they lived on Firlands Way."

The walk takes about an hour and 15 minutes. The route is generally flat, but with some tree roots and uneven pavement, on-street walking in several areas is not suitable for wheelchairs.

The Shoreline Historical Museum is located at the corner of N 185th and Linden Ave N, 18501 Linden Avenue North.

Tech Talk: Getting Out in Front of Some Nasty Malware

Getting Out in Front of Some Nasty Malware

I have getting inquiries recently about Cryptolocker and Gameover Zeus (GOZ), largely due to the recent news about takedown of the GOZ botnet and the filing of criminal charges against the Russian-based leader of the criminal group responsible for this malicious software.

This takedown was remarkable because it required synchronized actions by 10 countries to sever and redirect communications between infected systems and the botnet’s decentralized servers. The result is 500 thousand to 1 million computer have been freed from the botnet.

But that is not what actually interests or concerns people at this point. It’s more personal than that. Key questions are boiling down to:
 “Am I at risk?”
 or
 “How do I avoid infection?”
The answers to both of these questions primarily depend on actions by you. And, based on estimates by security experts, you have a limited-time window to protect yourself before this botnet might reappear.

Limited Time?

The takedown of the GOZ botnet has prevented infected computers from communicating with the servers that are either collecting personal or financial information.

If your system happens to be inflected by Cryptolocker, the takedown could also be preventing the encryption of your user documents, photos, and files, holding them for payment of a ransom.

UK's National Crime Agency warned on June 2nd that “There is a unique two-week opportunity for internet users to rid and safeguard themselves from the GOZeuS and Cryptolocker malware.” That was a nearly a week ago.

Some Background

GameoverZeus made its appearance in 2011 as a variant of other Zeus-named malware that would harvest bank account information. It is a Trojan, a piece of malware that pretends to one thing but is actually another.

To get into your system GOZ typically depends on our curiosity as an attachment that appears to from a business or friend. It depends on you to open it. Once activated, it looks for financial information and starts tracking keystrokes to capture login information to your bank or shopping sites.

The results are sent to collection servers so your accounts can be exploited or your purchases rerouted. Over $100 million dollars in losses from businesses and individuals over the past 2 ½ years are attributed to GOZ.

This Is Where It Gets Creepy

Last fall, GOZ, started installing Cryptlocker on the exploited systems that weren’t providing a lot of financial information. Cryptlocker’s goal is to encrypt all your data system with a practically unbreakable scheme. It then pops up a notice saying that you have 72 hours to pay a ransom or the key to your encrypted files will destroyed. The later you pay, the higher the cost.

And if you don’t pay, there is currently no way to get those files back. According to FBI charging documents, this even happened to a local police department in Massachusetts who even had “its main file server, including administrative documents, investigative materials, and digital photo mug shots, encrypted by Cryptolocker.” The police were forced to pay $750 to regain access to their files.

It’s estimated that Cryptolocker has infected over 230,000 computers in less than a year. At least half of those systems are the in the United States.

Sounds pretty dire, doesn’t it. It doesn’t have to be. That depends on what you do, now. We have a narrow window of opportunity to correct this problem and protect your computers and your data, thanks to the botnet takedown. It’s time to get ahead of the bad guys for a change.

And that bring us to your questions…

“Am I at risk?”

You could be. We need to discover whether your computer is impacted or not.

If you have a Mac and don’t have Windows running on the system at all, you’ve ducked the bullet this time. That doesn’t mean that Macs are immune from malware, as I note in a previous Tech Talk.

Steps to determine if you have GOZ or Cryptolocker:
  1. Make sure your anti-virus program is fully updated and run a virus scan. Select any items found and either quarantine or delete them, depending on your anti-virus program
  2. Download an additional security scanner to check the system again. Anti-virus program vary on their detection methods so a second scanner will often find items the first scan did not. Since these scanners only run when you want them to, there is no resident conflict with your regular anti-virus program.  Make sure that the scanner you use is a different brand from your anti-virus program. Here are some free scanner options for you:
  3. Use Windows update on your version of Windows to check for, download and install any updates that have not yet been applied to your system. It’s important to eliminate any vulnerability that could be exploited.
If you believe you have been infected, take the following actions after completing the steps above to eliminate the threat.

Change passwords on your computer and any critical accounts (email, banks & financial institutions, and shopping sites) to reduce an residual effects from the infection.

Review your accounts on these sites, looking for unexpected transactions that you might need to report or contest.

Order copies of your credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com to check and appeal any unauthorized activity. This is a free service required by Federal law and provided by TransUnion, EquiFax, and Experian. You are entitled to one free report from each credit reporting agency.

Next week, we will address, “How do I avoid infection?”

In the meantime, take advantage of the moment and use the steps above to determine your risk and take action. Remember:

Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.
---Motivational Speaker Denis Waitley
