Schools Superintendent search update

Shoreline School District Superintendent Sue Walker is retiring at the end of the school year and the search is now under way for her successor.

The Shoreline School Board retained the services of Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) to assist in the Superintendent Search process. Phase 1 of that process involved hosting forums and an on-line survey during the week of Jan. 13 to gather stakeholder input from the greater school and community regarding current district areas of strength, areas of suggested improvement, and the skills, knowledge, and leader characteristics desired in the future superintendent.

Consultants Janet Barry and Brian Benzel from HYA coordinated the collection of this information and provided the Board with a summary report at its Jan. 27 meeting for reference in Phase 2 (applicant screening and interviews). The Board adopted the Desired Superintendent Characteristics to help guide the search for a new superintendent.

Links to the Desired Superintendent Characteristics, and the HYA summary and complete Leadership Profile Report may be found on the updated Superintendent Search Page.

Today's Business: Thai Bistro

Thai Bistro for dinner

Today's Business: Thai Bistro, 18336 Aurora Ave N
Text and photos, Marc Weinberg

If you were to say that our THAI BISTRO is a ‘family affair’, you’d be exactly right. Learning from Mom, this family adventure of owning and managing a restaurant began more than 25 years ago. On occasion Mom is still preparing authentic dishes with daily activities being managed by family members like Nui, Nooch and Kane. And somewhere there’s an aunt and a husband that I’ve never met.

What makes Thai Bistro such a pleasure are the flavors, the choices and all of the serving staff along with the family. You’ll quickly feel at home in the custom designed interior with traditionally carved teak columns/dĂ©cor. The artistic design elements and lighting are drawn together by a hand painted wall scene that transports you to Thailand. Seating is plentiful at both tables and booths in a large open space with carved wooden ceiling fans and custom lamps.

Custom lighting illuminates the hand carved wood
with the traditional magenta glow of Thailand,

Lunch time is as great as dinner and I’ve worked through as much of the menu as I could since they opened in 2007. Unfortunately I’ve stumbled on a few specialties that I love and have been known to repeat, like the curry dishes with a variety of meat choices and my all-time dependable “Mom’s Favorite.” What’s so funny about this is that until recently I just thought it was a ‘catchy’ name assigned to this dish. But now the secret is out, and you and I both know it is indeed ‘mom’s favorite.’

By ‘specialties’ I mean choices that include duck, lamb and fish that go beyond a typical American/Thai establishment. Yes there are spicy ones, but most can be seasoned to your taste whatever your background or discriminating palate. Beer, wine and spirits are also on the menu along with some great hot tea selections and my personal favorite again is iced ‘Thai Tea’.

On Friday and Saturday evenings the kitchen
is on a fast track to perfection with each dish.

Parking is free and plentiful immediately outside in a well illuminated area. Thai Bistro is located near Bartell Drugs and the Starbucks on the SE corner of 185th St and Aurora Ave N. (Across Aurora from Fred Meyers)

I know I used the word ‘favorite’ a few times in this article, but it’s not easy talking about ‘our Thai Bistro’ without that characterization. If you give it a try, you just might be speaking like I am.

Your table is waiting

Balancing Life and Business through In-Depth Goal Setting
By this time of year, many New Years resolutions are beginning to be distant, discarded memories. Goal setting, on the other hand, has proven to make a huge , long term difference in a person's productivity. In this session we will not just learn about goal setting, but actually begin to create a system to make 2014 the best year you have had yet.

You will come out of this session with:
  • Goals for 2014 in 7 chosen areas of your life
  • Goals for February that will take you to your larger goals
  • Five goals written as S.M.A.R.T. goals (and know what that means)
  • Five goals written as affirmations to be posted for everyday awareness
  • An accountability system that will help you stay on track

Margery Edwards
Margery Edwards' Bio

The first 26 years of my adult working life were spent in the delightful pursuit of educating young adults at Alternative School #1. Before school started I asked my students what they wanted to learn that year. Then I built the curriculum with that in mind.

Halfway through, I learned about the importance of written goals when I was pursuing my MA at Antioch in Whole Brain Learning. I began teaching that to my students.

When I began my Legal Shield business in 2004, my trainers put a great emphasis on setting and writing goals, and I have learned much from them.

When preparing to share what I knew at Dream Connections this January, I was inspired to take it to a whole new level. This has been helping me to be more productive in life and business, so I am delighted to be sharing this newest version with you.

Balancing Life and Business through in-depth Goal Setting

By this time of January, many New Year's resolutions are already dim, discarded memories. Goals, however, have been shown to really help people to achieve at a higher level.

Shorewood wrestlers head for sub-regional tournament Feb 7-8

The Shorewood wrestling team prepares for the Western Conference 3A North/South sub-regional tournament Feb. 7-8 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School after the Thunderbirds finished their dual-meet season with a home senior-night loss to Meadowdale that left Shorewood with a 4-7 record, its first losing record in four years.

It was a rough Senior Night for the Thunderbirds as they lost 48-30 to the Mavericks.

The match started at 195 pounds, and Shorewood quickly fell behind 15-0.

The Mavericks had stretched their lead to 30-12 after eight weight classes.

As he has done all season, senior Matthew Floresca sparked a Shorewood rally, pinning his opponent as the Thunderbirds came back to tie the team score at 30-30.

Meadowdale won the last three matches, all by pin, for the final margin and a 2-2 Wesco 3A record.

It wasn’t all bad for the Shorewood fans. With his pin, Floresca got not only his team-leading 26th victory of the season, but also the 113th win of his career. With this win, against only 9 career losses, Floresca moved past Tim Hestern, class of 2008, for the most wins in school history.

Rivalry runs deep between Seattle's Rat City and Denver's Rocky Mountain Rollergirls

D'evil'D Meggs Wilson from our home team, Grave Danger

The same is true in football as in roller derby: both love to hit and smash their opponents, and they are full of win in Seattle. Shoreline's Rat City Rollergirls laced up their blue and green skates and hosted a Seahawks scrimmage for fans in Shoreline on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

They had a double header, with the ladies of the Camaro Harem playing against a pickup team from the Rat City Rollergirls, followed by the Outcast boys taking on the gals of Grave Danger.

They've laced up their Seahawks skates!

"We're wagered for winning breakfast bragging rights with Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. When the Seahawks win, Rocky Mountain will send us a care package of omelet fixin's and chili peppers, but if they lose, we'll be sending out some salmon lox and coffee to the mile high city. We can't wait to taste that winning breakfast on you, Denver! Go Hawks!!"

Death notices as of January 22, 2014

UFOs over Shoreline

Friday, January 31, 2014

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

Friday night, January 31, 2014 at 9:00pm a UFO suddenly appeared over the houses at Richmond Beach. When it was first sighted the UFO was at a very low altitude, no more than fifty feet. It flew very slowly southwest towards Puget Sound. It slowly gained height but seem to maintain a constant speed of ten miles an hour.

The object was a glowing orange in color and had a glob like shape. Not four minutes later a companion UFO followed the route of the first one.

When the third UFO appeared I ran to get my camera to document this Roswell like experience. Believe it or not at least fifteen UFOs were sighted. Several times three or four were visible at the same time. Man, what a night!

Almost in Shoreline: Hummus Bistro Syrian Mediterranean Kitchen

Hummus at the Hummus Bistro

Hummus Bistro - Syrian Mediterranean Kitchen
A New Restaurant Almost in Shoreline

Text and photos by Stefanie Gendreau

I usually don't publicly gush about restaurants but I've eaten at Hummus Bistro a few times and I needed to shout YUM!

Greek salad

It's definitely an inconspicuous little place. Not something I would see driving by and have a burning desire to try. But, it just so happens that my neighbor in Ridgecrest introduced us to some friends that moved here from Syria. They arrived in Washington a little more than a year ago and opened Hummus Bistro in the small space that used to be La Casa Azul.

This evening I enjoyed succulent Chicken Shawerma, a tasty Greek salad and, of course, hummus! I am a big fan of hummus and theirs didn't disappoint. All I could have asked for was a larger portion (a vat or trough would work)! The food was presented beautifully and everything was very fresh and flavorful.

Sweets

For dessert, we had sticky baklava and a cornbread-like cake soaked in the same gooey honey yumminess. Oh my, it was SO good! I would stop there just for that.

The dinner prices are more than reasonable, plus I see they have a special lunch menu of wraps, but I haven't tried those yet. Also, we were told that they will soon have their liquor license and plan to host intimate music performances in the near future.

Chicken Shawerma

Anyway, if you like Mediterranean food and you don't want to drive the U-District or Pike Place Market, you've got to check this little place out. Too bad it's not 50 feet north!
