Shorecrest to present 'Harvey' as its fall play

Shorecrest High School will present its fall play “Harvey” by Mary Chase from Nov. 14 to 17 and 21 to 24 in the school theater.

“Harvey” is a beautiful and charming Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, celebrating timeless ideas of friendships, beliefs, and morals. Exploring what it means to be a friend, how people live their lives, and how we interact are some of the most common of human thoughts and desires.

Further, the magical element turns this story into a modern-day fairy tale. Believing in what we cannot see or understand, and having that help us to see the good in the world is the basis behind so many philosophies and religions in the world—and that is what Elwood learns from Harvey. An invisible, six-foot-tall rabbit, Harvey represents a belief in good, letting your life happen on its own course, staying true to your beliefs, and ultimately being a happy, kind, and honest person.

Showtimes are Nov. 14 to 16 and 21 to 23 at 7:30pm, and Nov. 17 and 24 at 2pm. Tickets are $10 in advance at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park Town Center and $12 the day of the show. Tickets are also available online. More information here.

What to do if heavy rains or high winds blow into Lake Forest Park

Heavy rain and high winds are here again and our City’s Public Works crews are ready to remove fallen trees from the road. If wires are on the ground, call 911. Police will ensure citizen safety and contact the proper agencies. You are part of the team, too! Your participation and awareness can help. Here is how:

  1. Clear your sidewalk and nearby street drains of leaves. Do not remove the grate from the storm drain opening – this does not unclog the system and creates a hazard for everyone. Place you leaves in a yard waste container or compost bin, not on the street.
  2. Listen to the weather forecast. Have a plan in case severe weather strikes.
  3. When a heavy rain or wind storm hits, don’t drive if you don’t have to. Having fewer cars on the street during and after a storm makes it easier to clear the streets of fallen trees.
  4. Watch for and obey “Street Closed” signs. They are placed by crews for your safety.
  5. Stay away from downed power lines.
  6. Call 9-1-1 for emergencies.
  7. If you haven’t already done so, build a Basic Emergency Supply Kit (more info here)

If localized flooding is severe and you are unable to clear the drain, call City Hall at 206-368-5440 during business hours or, after hours, call 206-296-8100.

Health reform for front line workers - NUHSA training session

The North Urban Human Service Alliance is sponsoring a training for front line workers and others interested in helping people without health insurance use the new Washington Insurance Exchange. The event will be Thursday, November 19th, Shoreline City Hall Council Chambers, from 8:30 to 10:00am.

A representative from Public Health Seattle and King County will provide an overview of how the health insurance exchange works, where to enroll and where those who need help can find personalized assistance. Participants will also learn how the Medicaid expansion program will work to provide health insurance coverage. There will be time for questions and answers so bring your concerns.

According to the American Community Survey estimates, there are more than 12,000 adults between the ages of 19 and 64 in North King County without health insurance. Medical bills are a major stressor for many families and a leading cause of personal bankruptcy.

Shorewood drops to elimination game of district soccer tournament Thursday

The Shorewood girls’ soccer team lost a Northwest District 3A tournament semifinal game Tuesday at Shoreline Stadium to drop to an elimination game Thursday against Mountlake Terrace at Edmonds Stadium.

Western Conference 3A South fourth-place Shorewood takes a 10-6-2 record into a 5 p.m. Thursday match with Wesco 3A South third-place Mountlake Terrace (11-6-1).

The winner of Shorewood’s Thursday match with Mountlake Terrace plays against the winner of a Tuesday game between Marysville Getchell and Marysville-Pilchuck in a Saturday 5 p.m. match at Shoreline Stadium for the District’s No. 3 State berth.

Shorewood dropped to the consolation round with a 2-0 loss to Wesco 3A South runner-up Meadowdale Tuesday. Meadowdale advances to the District championship game against Wesco 3A South champion Shorecrest Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shoreline Stadium.

Shorewood reached the semifinals with a 4-3 shootout victory over North division champion Marysville-Pilchuck at Marysville-Pilchuck.

In Meadowdale’s victory over Shorewood in the semifinal game at Shoreline Stadium, the night was damp with no wind. The excitement of the previous overtime game was still in the air. Both teams passed and moved the ball well and had a couple of chances in the first half but were not able to score. The second half started with Shorewood hitting the crossbar on a shot by Carrie Jensen in the first minute. Meadowdale started working the right side of the field and finally got a goal in the 56th minute on a header. Two minutes later, Meadowdale scored its second goal. Shorewood tried to press harder to score but was unable to find the net and the game ended 2-0. Ariel Garay was in goal for Shorewood.

Shorewood coach Bill Wilkins said that the game with Marysville-Pilchuck Saturday, Oct. 2, matched the turbulent windy day. Shorewood opened the scoring at the twelfth minute when Zoe Vincini passed the ball to Salyna McDonald who in turn hit it to Christine Donnan. Pilchuck scored about a minute later to tie the score 1-1. In the 42nd minute Siena Helland scored on a pass from Vincini to put Shorewood up 2-1. Ten minutes later Pilchuck tied the game at 2-2. In the 58th minute Vincini scored on a pass from Carrie Jensen before Pilchuck tied the game for the third time. With no scores in overtime the game went to penalty kicks. Shorewood led off and made each kick in the first five. Pilchuck answered with five of its own. Sudden death penalty kicks followed. Shorewood scored as did MP. On the seventh kick, Shorewood scored, and then goalkeeper Ariel Garay was able to save the next shot for the win.

First Thursday artist open house at Garden Essentia in Ballinger Village

Meet November's Featured Artists
Martha Dankers (Pottery and Jewelry)
Amanda Schuster (Watercolors)
Nov. 7, 2013 - 4:00 - 8:00pm (open house)

Garden Essentia, LLC
20152 Ballinger Way NE
Shoreline 98155   206-453-3920

Come enjoy a refreshment and meet two of our local artists Martha Dankers and Amanda Schuster..  Martha will also be demonstrating the stages of incorporating nature into her pottery and jewelry. Their art will be on display and available for purchase throughout November.

Artist Martha Dankers

Martha Dankers - Mpressions by Nature

As a Master Gardener, I have always loved the inherent beauty of plants in the northwest. I have many garden spaces filled with my favorite plants both native and landscape. I have a special passion for ferns.
I discovered that through my pottery, I could preserve the beauty of plants by making botanical impressions in clay. Through the creation of my art I now look at plants with a more appreciative eye. I now see more closely the exquisite design of each leaf and flower.
"Mpressions by Nature" is aptly named: I make the impressions but Nature is the true artist.

Watercolor by Amanda Schuster

Amanda Schuster - Watercolors
I have enjoyed the visual arts and painting my whole life with a particular interest in watercolor for its versatility and dynamic nature. My love for color and the potential that watercolor gives me to create luminous layers within my subjects is both challenging and highly rewarding. The subjects I find especially intriguing are those that require a degree of "tightness" in the composition but can be so beautifully illuminated using the loose medium of watercolor.
After studying architecture in college, I ended up working in a non-art related field. As my time opened up in the last decade, I have dedicated much of myself to art and have been taking classes in watercolor with some of the local masters including both Kay Barnes and Elizabeth Kincaid.
I grew up in the Puget Sound area and currently live in Woodinville with my husband and two children. We have had the opportunity to travel extensively where I get much of my inspiration from images we see on our adventures.

Musical performance in Shoreline Friday supports Music4Life program

Two prominent professional musicians will perform in Shoreline on Friday evening, November 8, 2013.  Korean-American pianist Jessica Choe will be joined by Turkish cellist Efe Baltacigil, Principal Cello of the Seattle Symphony. The two world-class musicians will perform beginning at 7:30pm at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, located at 1512 NW 195th St in Shoreline. Tickets are $20 at the door and will benefit the Shoreline Schools Music4Life™ program.

“This will be a rare opportunity to hear these fine musicians,” says Shoreline resident and concert organizer Lee Craig.  “Their performance will feature works by Shostakovich, Bach and Saint-Saens.”

Jessica Choe is a graduate of the Julliard School and Peabody Conservatory and has performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse, France, I Tatti in Florence, Italy and other prominent recital halls.  She is a prominent chamber musician in the Pacific Northwest and formerly a company pianist with the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Efe Baltacigil was born in Istanbul and received his Bachelor’s degree from Mimar Sinan University Conservatory from there in 1998 and an Artist Diploma from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 2002.  Baltacigil performed with Pinchas Zukerman, Midori and Yo-Yo Ma at Carnegie Hall for Isaac Stern’s memorial, and participated in Mr. Ma’s Silk Road Project.  He joined the Seattle Symphony in 2011–2012 season.  His concerto debuts include the Berlin Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and Istanbul Symphony. In March 2014 Baltacigil will perform the illustrious Dvorak cello concerto with the Seattle Symphony and Ludovic Morlot.

“This is a concert for both adults and children,” Craig says. “Any adults who happen to have musical instruments they’re no longer using can bring them to donate to the Shoreline Schools Music4Life program.  We’re off to a great start in acquiring musical instruments that can be used by students of low income families.”

The Shoreline Schools program acquires used musical instruments from adults who no longer use them, gets them fully repaired and donates them free of charge to Shoreline Schools for use primarily by students from low income families. The Shoreline program is supported by the Rotary Club of Shoreline and Shoreline Breakfast Rotary. Music4Life also operates other programs for Seattle and Highline Public Schools.

For more information or to donate an instrument to Shoreline Schools Music4Life, contact David Endicott, 206-409-3275 or go to the website.

Shorewood to open new theater with Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'

Duke Senior (Paige Knickerbocker) and his lords and ladies
(l to r: Hanna Van Inwegen, Carol Lee, Nicko Latz, Abby Linn, and Amy Buswell)

In 1599 the first comedy performed by Shakespeare's company in the Globe Theatre was “As You Like It.” So the Shorewood High School drama department decided to present the play as the first in its beautiful new theater.

Phebe (Eva Wellington) and Silvius (Mark Penrod)
Love in its many forms is the subject of “As You Like It.” When Rosalind and her father are banished from the court by her power-hungry uncle, she and her cousin Celia escape with the court jester to the woods. They meet an assortment of lovesick country folk, and Orlando, the man Rosalind fell in love with before their departure. Since Rosalind is disguised as a boy, she takes the opportunity to teach Orlando to truly love her, faults and all. In true Shakespearean comic style, a host of clever fools play with the lovers until there is nothing to do, but be married …with the help of a Greek god.

Showtimes are Nov. 15 and 16 and 21 to 23 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and available online or by calling 206-393-4372, or $12 at the door.
