  • Forecast
  • Highlights last week
  • Last week's data
Forecast: For the remainder of our week, and next weekend it looks to be wet off and on again. Tuesday will be much like Monday, with some drying out Wednesday. Thursday looks a little wet again as another storm moves through, clearing on Friday with yet another storm front moving through Friday evening for return of some more rain. The weekend looks mostly dry. Temperatures will hover in the 50's to low 60's this week for high temperatures, low temperatures will fall into the 40's or low 50's.

Highlights last week: Last weekend September 28-29, we had a soaker of a rain storm move through with some breezy conditions. The national weather service on Sunday even issued a high wind warning for the area before they downgraded it to a wind advisory. Winds reached 35-45mph gusts over the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas Saturday and Sunday afternoon. We received a total of 1.78 inches of rain, not as much as Sea-tac over the weekend. We were spared by the higher amounts of rain due to the Olympic Mountain rain shadow. Areas south of us received 2-3 inches of rain over that same weekend. Some places in the southwest interior of Western Washington received much higher amounts, as well as the mountains. This was a very unseasonable storm, a weather event that typically happens in November or December.

On Friday morning frost was observed in some places due to radiational cooling. Did you observe any frost in your yard Friday morning?

Last weeks data:
High temperature: 61.2°F (Friday)
Low temperature: 39.2°F (Friday)
Rainiest day: 1.05 inches (Saturday)
Total rainfall: 2.19 inches
Warmest day: 54.6°F (Saturday)
Coldest day: 48.9°F (Friday)
Average temperature: 50.8°F (4 degrees colder!)
Station average for last week: 54.8°F

Warmest and coldest days are based on average temperature of the entire day, starting at midnight. All other averages are based on the whole week, starting Saturday morning at midnight. All weather data unless otherwise noted is sourced from Carl's weather station located in the Echo Lake neighborhood of Shoreline, Washington. Letter to the Editor: Facebook political ads are not issue-based

To the Editor:

Over the last week there have been several paid ads on Facebook denigrating several of the candidates running for Lake Forest Park City Council. These ads are non-issue based. The most disconcerting aspect of them is that they attack the candidates personally.

The current ad speaks to the fact that one of the candidates is employed by King County and raises the question as to a potential conflict of interest. We have a sitting councilman running for re-election who also works for King County. This has never been an issue with him. The opposing candidate in the race in question works for the state. He has served in this community for many years and again, this has not been an issue. It is either an issue for all or none of the candidates.

The ad prior to this one raises the question of qualification of the only female candidate due to her age and the fact that she has not had children and does not own a home. We have a current candidate who has served for eight years on the Council who does not have children and again, this has never been an issue. In terms of age, the citizens of Lake Forest Park in the past elected a young man of 18 years old to serve on the council. We need the energy and enthusiasm of our young citizens or we run the risk of losing them to communities more welcoming to their ideas and desire to serve.

None of the actual candidates has engaged in this type of attack so it is even more unfortunate when this type of campaigning is introduced by a non-candidate. This city has seen enough of negative campaigning and I am hoping that our citizens do not want to see this happen in this current election. Misinformation, falsehoods and negative attacks don’t seem like a great ethical foundation for our community.

The City Council adopted the Compassionate Charter making our city a Compassionate city.  Perhaps the person initiating these ads might want to review the charter and remember the commitment we have made.

Issue statements from incumbent Northshore Fire Commissioner Kae Peterson and challenger Pat McSweeney

Incumbent Northshore Fire District Commissioner Kae Peterson faces challenger Patrick McSweeney in the Nov. 5 general election.

Here are statements on campaign issues from the two candidates;

 Patrick McSweeney

My wife Irene and I have lived in Kenmore for 36 years; we raised our children here and believe quality fire service is essential. I have 40 years experience in financial analysis and retired as managing director, US Bank Asset Management.

Our firefighters are dedicated professionals. They serve our community well. I believe we should strongly support their efforts. However, our fire commissioners must improve their fiscal accountability as well as communications with citizens.

A Regional Fire Authority is under consideration. Regional collaboration should be pursued objectively with the goals of improving service and reducing costs. I am uniquely qualified to evaluate the RFA planning process and provide sound management insight to the district.

Excess assessments were collected from taxpayers in 2008, and again in 2012. $1.2 million remains unused in excess of a fully funded reserve account.

My goals are fiscal accountability and best business practices. The department should establish a defined quality improvement process, utilize work plans to manage projects, and establish goals and objectives to measure and assess outcomes. We should routinely solicit citizen feedback about the quality of the services rendered.

I will work hard to earn your trust. I respectfully ask for your vote.

Website: www.patmcsweeneyforfirecommissioner.com/

Kae Peterson

The essential obligation of the Fire Department is public safety. Our focus has been on delivering quick response times, using up-to-date equipment and maintaining a dedicated highly trained, physically fit staff of fire fighters.

I am most proud that a few years ago with the downturn in the economy your Fire Board chose to weather the downturn by leaning our administrative services, not filling a firefighter position and cutting expenses where it was possible, always mindful of never negatively impacting response times to our citizens. By doing this we have reserves to handle the loss of taxation payments due to the Bothell annexation, which will have a three-year impact on our budget.

We have had adequate reserves to manage our budget without raising taxes.

We also cooperate with other fire departments to provide needed service throughout the region.

The most important issue facing the department will be finding ways to increase regional cooperation while maintaining high local efficiency and fiscal responsibility. I strongly believe that bigger for bigger sake is not a good rationale for regionalization.

Retaining me to the Northshore Fire Board also will preserve the balanced representation of LFP residents on the Board. Thank you for your support.

Josh Brown, Executive Director
Puget Sound Regional Council

Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown will become the new Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council. Brown was selected after a nationwide search to succeed Bob Drewel, who is retiring at the end of this year. "I am honored and humbled to have been selected as PSRC's Executive Director. The challenges confronting our region-from economic competiveness to protecting our quality of life-can only be solved with collaboration and partnerships. I am excited at the opportunity to work with the leaders of our region as PSRC's Executive Director," said Brown.

PSRC coordinates regional growth, transportation and economic development planning within King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. The agency selects projects to receive federal transportation funding and is a key resource for data and forecasts on population, transportation, and the economy. State Fire Marshal reminds residents to Prevent Kitchen Fires

Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12 and the State Fire Marshal’s Office is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to remind residents to ‘Prevent Kitchen Fires.'

According to the latest NFPA research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen — more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries.

"Make fire prevention a key ingredient when you cook" says State Fire Marshal Charles Duffy. "It only takes a few second for a dangerous fire to start, so exercise culinary caution. We hope that Fire Prevention Week reaches citizens before they've suffered a damaging lesson."

Recommended kitchen safety tips:

  1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling, or boiling food.
  2. If you must leave the room, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  3. When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.
  4. If you have young children, use the stove’s back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove.
  5. When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.
  6. Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper and plastic bags, towels, and anything else that can burn, away from your stovetop.
  7. Clean up food and grease from burners and stovetops.

Fire Prevention Week is actively supported by fire departments across the country. Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.

Disaster planning in Shoreline

The Shoreline 2013 CERT
If there's a disaster, hope one of them lives on your street

By Patrick Ducey

The earth has just stopped shaking, and it was a big one. The power is out. Your phone doesn’t work. The internet won’t respond. There is damage all around, and many people are possibly injured. Sound farfetched? Sound like a disaster movie? It could be something that happens in our future.

There are many earthquake fault lines in the Pacific Northwest, some of which have the potential to cause devastating earthquakes like the one that struck Christchurch, New Zealand or cause tsunamis like the one that struck Japan. Every resident who makes their home in this region should have a plan to prepare for disasters like these and others.

The City of Shoreline has a plan. The first thing emergency responders do after a disaster is to perform a damage assessment of the entire city. They won’t stop and help; they won’t answer calls while they survey the city. After the assessment, they will respond first to high priority emergencies. City emergency planners realize that some parts of the city may not see help for days.  The city has a plan for that, too. Part of the plan is to train community members in emergency response.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a national program that helps prepare citizens to assist their neighbors when a disaster has overwhelmed emergency services. CERT members are trained in fire fighting, first aid, urban search and rescue, and being part of an overall disaster recovery team. The training is free, sponsored by the City of Shoreline and the Shoreline Fire Department.

Shoreline CERT proudly announces the completion of our latest CERT class. More of your neighbors have a plan for what to do after the earth stops shaking. For more information on joining our team, contact the Shoreline Emergency Management Office.

Shoreline Man wins $250,000 playing Mega Millions with Washington's Lottery

Friday, October 4, 2013

The 7-11 at 1232 North 185th Street in Shoreline
sold a $250,000 lottery ticket to a Shoreline man

A man from Shoreline recently won $250,000 playing Washington’s Lottery Mega Millions game.

He realized he won last week when he was checking his tickets at a local grocery store. At first glance, he thought the ticket reader revealed that he had won $250. He said, “I couldn’t see it very well, so I called the store-keeper over, and asked her to help. She said the ticket was worth $250,000!”

After claiming his prize from Washington’s Lottery Everett Regional Office last Friday, September 27, the Ward’s Cove Company retiree went out to dinner to celebrate. He plans to share some of his winnings with the woman who helped him in the store and invest some in stocks. He said, “I just feel lucky that I won and later on I’ll give some money away.”

This was the winner’s first time playing Mega Millions. He said, “I used my own numbers; whichever numbers came into my head.” He has purchased Washington’s Lottery tickets regularly in the past, and only recently got back into playing. The man previously won $500 on a Washington’s Lottery Scratch ticket, but recognizes this as his first big win.

Mega Millions is a multi-state jackpot game. If someone in Washington State wins a Mega Millions prize, others in Washington benefit, too. For example, the retail location that sold the winning ticket, the 7-Eleven at 1232 North 185th Street in Shoreline, will receive a $2,500 selling bonus.

Additionally, proceeds from Washington’s Lottery benefit the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account, providing scholarships to college students statewide. To learn more about Washington’s Lottery, its beneficiaries and to review all up-to-date winning numbers, visit WA Lottery.

The winner has chosen to remain anonymous.

Lake Forest Park resident teaches classic memory secrets at Green Lake Library Sunday

Charles Kraus teaches memory tricks

When Lake Forest Park resident Charles Kraus was a kid, he had a lousy memory. Fortunately, instead of learning to live with it, he was introduced to a series of memory enhancing techniques, the study of Pneumonics.

“I was an amateur magician, and one day, Harry Lorayne, a well-known professional entertainer, stopped by our teen magic club to teach us a few tricks. In addition to being a wonderful sleight-of-hand prestidigitator, he was one of the country’s leading memory experts. Calling it a trick, Harry showed us how to instantly memorize a long list of items shouted out at random from the audience.

“The most astounding thing of all wasn’t the trick.  That was amazing.  But even better, the method, the secret, was so simple that by the time we left our meeting all of us teen magicians were able to duplicate Harry’s effect!  That was astounding.”

At 2:00pm on Sunday, October 6, 2013 the Green Lake Library will host Charles as he addresses the day to day issues confronted by mature adults – taming forgetfulness, remembering names and facts. Charles will demonstrate and teach classic memory secrets that help us keep track of personal data, names, phone numbers, shopping lists, and more.

“Forgetfulness is a burden.  Did we lock the door? Did we turn off the lights?  What about the oven?  Did we feed the fish?  Where, exactly, did we park that car?  What were those things we planned to do today?  What did your wife ask you to stop and buy on the way home from the office?  Why exactly did you want to call your aunt -- her birthday?  Which birthday?  Did you pay the bill, send the note, and where are your glasses?
“My objective is to provide tips and systems that can be used every day, by all of us.   This is instantaneous long term memory improvement.  It is a great way to recalibrate skills using methods that can be mastered on the spot,” Kraus says.

From left, Jeanne Monger, Andy Eccleshall, Barbara Guthrie

Jeanne Monger and Barbara Guthrie, Board Members of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association, also members of the artist selection committee for the Echo Lake Mural, presented a plaque dedicating the mural at the City Council meeting September 30, 2013,

Following is part of the presentation speech by Jeanne Monger:

As Board Members representing the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association, we are here to celebrate the completion of the Echo Lake Mural at NE 205th St and 1st Ave NE, titled Echo in Time. An artist selection panel chose Andy Eccleshall of The Mural Works in Edmonds to design and complete the mural.
We very much appreciated the 1% for Public Art and Neighborhood Mini-Grant funding we received. We would like to thank the Shoreline City Council for this years’ change in the mini-grant rules which now requires matching half of the mini-grant value with our volunteer hours, which we have fulfilled.
We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to City Manager Julie Underwood, Rosie O'brien-Ochs and Nora Smith of the Office of Neighborhoods, Dick Deal and Kirk Peterson of the Parks Dept, the artist selection panel and other volunteers who helped with the project, Holyrood Cemetery for wall preparation equipment, and special thanks to Ros Bird, Public Art Coordinator for the City, for all of her direction and assistance.

Echo in Time, mural by Andy Eccleshall
of The Mural Works in Edmonds

Andy Eccleshall of The Mural Works, the artist, was introduced. Andy reviewed his design at an ELNA meeting and incorporated member's ideas into his design. The mural displays the past and present uses of Echo Lake, including the historic trolley, depiction of former residents in the boat, and the present use as a bike trail. Also represented in the design are animals that enjoy Echo Lake today, the bird on the sign, the eagle soaring, the ducks swimming, and the otter coming out of the rocks on the north side wall.

The Board members presented a dedication plaque which will be installed on the mural.

Through the efforts of many, this mural will be enjoyed by passersby for years to come. Thank you again to everyone who made it possible.

Civil War re-enactors in Edmonds startle Shoreline residents

A series of what sounded like explosions startled Shoreline residents in the northwest section of the City on Thursday. Multiple explosions at fairly regular intervals puzzled and concerned residents.

However, according to our News Partner MyEdmondsNews, the noise was the sound of cannons being fired at the Madrona K-8 School in Edmonds. "The school received a visit from a group of Civil War re-enactors — their fourth visit in eight years — which involved the use of gun powder — but no ammunition — in demonstrating cannon use."

RBCA Candidates Forum on Tuesday October 8

By Jerry Patterson, RBCA Vice President

Once again, Richmond Beach Community Association will hold its annual Candidates Forum on Tuesday, October 8, 7:00pm, in the basement of Richmond Beach Congregational Church located at 1512 NW 195th Street in Shoreline.

This is an opportunity for the community to learn what prospective office holders will do to better serve the needs of citizens. Our customized political forum helps strip away the one-size-fits-all campaign rhetoric and the thirty-second sound bites. The forum is one of the longest-running and best-attended events of its kind in the area. All candidates from elections in our area have been invited, including Shoreline School Board, Shoreline City Council, Ronald Wastewater District, Shoreline Fire Commissioner, King County Executive and King County Council District 1.

RBCA will do their part by creating the forum. The candidates will do their part by presenting their views of how they can best serve the residents. You can do your part in two ways. First and foremost, show up! Second do your homework.

Here are some Dos and Don’ts to keep in mind as you prepare to quiz the candidates in October:

  • Do brush up on your Junior High Civics. Make sure your questions fit the office being discussed.
  • Do keep a watchful eye on the news in the next several weeks. Inquire about ongoing or impending issues, grounded in fact…not rumor.
  • Don’t make speeches or declarations under the guise of asking a question. In other words, leave the campaigning to the campaigners.
  • Don’t treat any candidate with disrespect. Stick to the issues, not personalities.
  • Do stick to one issue at a time.
  • Don’t try to play “gotcha” to embarrass a candidate just because the candidate holds a different view than you do.

If the past is any barometer, we should have a great turnout and a lively discussion.
