Almost half of Washington drownings happen in rivers and streams

Tips on how to stay safe in Washington rivers and streams
From the Washington State Department of Health

Enjoying Washington’s waters can be one of the highlights of the summer, yet it can also be dangerous, as recent drowning cases have shown. Analysis by state health officials of recent reported drowning deaths show most in our state happen in summer months, and almost half of the 100 deaths a year occur in rivers and streams.

Frigid temperatures caused by icy mountain runoff are among the reasons these types of waters are so dangerous. Cold water can affect even strong swimmers’ muscles and nervous system within 10 minutes, overriding strength and endurance.

Watching out for treacherous conditions and using common safety strategies can avoid tragedy. Fast moving currents can also be treacherous, and logs, branches, and bushes can snag or tip rafts and inner tubes and hold a person under water. In addition to life vests, people in swift creeks or rivers should be wary of where they put their feet. A foot jammed between rocks in a creek with a strong current can push a person underwater.

The highest drowning numbers are among teenage and young adult males. An inexperienced swimmer might intend to cool off by wading, but may step off an unseen ledge and quickly be in over their head. Children should be watched at all times when they are in or near water, and non-swimmers should always be within arm’s reach.

Call for help if you see someone in trouble. Then find something to reach out to them with or throw them a lifeline. If you decide to go in the water to help, bring something with you to help keep you both afloat.

People who drown often do so silently and without notice. The best defense against the risks that can happen around water is a well-fitting life jacket. Taking the proper precautions is the best way to ensure that a fun summer outing doesn’t turn into a tragedy.

The Department of Health website is your source for a healthy dose of information. Also, find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Police catch burglar in the act in North Ridge neighborhood

According to Deputy Christopher Myers, Shoreline Precinct 5, residents of the North Ridge neighborhood in the northeast section of the larger Echo Lake Neighborhood came home at 12:45pm Friday, July 19 to discover a male inside their home, burglarizing it.

The suspect fled the house on foot. During the same time, another citizen at a nearby house also reported interrupting someone attempting to burglarize their home. Officers were told one male ran on foot and his getaway driver sped away.

Shoreline officers were on scene very quickly and established a perimeter to contain the suspect.  Officers from both Edmonds PD and Lynnwood PD arrived to assist.

The suspect was found in the neighborhood after a successful K-9 track and was taken into custody.

Investigation found he had broken into a total three homes, with the second and third appearing to be an attempt to hide from responding officers.

Alert citizens and good team work between neighboring agencies led to a successful outcome.

Muni League supports upcoming Parks Levy

The Municipal League Foundation announced last week its support of King County Parks Levy Proposition 1, which appears on the Aug. 6 Primary Ballot.

The Municipal League Foundation Board voted to support County Prop. 1 at the recommendation of its Ballot Issues Committee.

King County manages the regional active and passive parks, trails, natural-area parks, local rural parks, and forest lands that make up the County’s 26,000-acre system.

In 2011, in response to a broad fiscal crisis, King County eliminated general-fund support for parks operations and maintenance. The primary revenue sources for County parks’ operational and capital budgets are two levies that were approved by voters in 2007 and expire at the end of 2013. The current proposition, King County Prop. 1, would consolidate and replace the two expiring levies.

The League notes that residents of both cities and unincorporated areas use the County parks system.

While the Municipal League says that it prefers that parks be supported by a more sustainable method than levies, such as the general fund, it notes that he general fund is not currently capable of providing for these expenditures.

Therefore, the League says, levies must be used to provide money in the immediate future for necessary operations and maintenance of the County Parks. The League says that the proposed levy will continue those activities.

A copy of the full summary and background on both measures, along with the League’s findings, recommendations, rationale, and arguments for and against can be found here.

The League says that citizen volunteers make ballot recommendations after they study the issues and review information on all sides. The recommendations are then reviewed and approved by the League Foundation Board, whose focus is on promoting effective government.

Recognizing those who fought in the Korean War on the 60th Anniversary of the armistice

On July 27, 1953, the armistice ending the Korean War was signed. On Monday, July 22, 2013 the Metropolitan King Council recognized those who fought in the conflict as the U.S. and the Republic of Korea mark the 60th anniversary of the armistice.

Labeled as the “Forgotten War,” the impact and history of the Korean War resonates throughout King County and the rest of Washington State. A Korean War memorial was constructed over 20 years ago in Olympia. There are an estimated 55,000 Korean War Veterans statewide, with approximately 10,000 living in King County.

The Dembowskis - Rod, Al, Dwight
Al Dembowski is a Korean War vet.

For Councilmember Rod Dembowski, one of the Korean War Veterans is his father, Al Dembowski.

“It’s a privilege to be able to honor those who served and to celebrate the contributions of the Korean American Community to King County,” said Councilmember Dembowski. “The enduring friendship between the United States and The Republic of Korea has paid immeasurable dividends to both countries. We owe our Veterans the highest gratitude for their contributions to peace and prosperity.”

Young Wan Song, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle
flanked by Rod Dembowski and a veteran

Young Wan Song, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle, provided remarks and recognized the Korean War Veterans that attended today’s ceremony.

“Today, on behalf of the Korean people and government, I have the honor to present Ambassador of Peace medals to Korean War Veterans,” said Song “They went to rescue South Korea during the Korean War and fought heroically against North Korean aggressors. These heroes are living testimony to our 60 years of alliance. Thanks to their great dedication and sacrifice, South Korea could achieve what it is and avoid what it is not. With this medal, I respectfully convey sincere gratitude of my country to them and their families. I sincerely hope that our heroes stay strong and healthy in order to witness a reunified Korea, a dream to be realized in the near future.”

A new hobby - tracking ships

Text and photo, Marc Weinberg

Today started out like other recent summer days, with that morning haze, especially when looking out over the water of Puget Sound. This morning I saw a funny looking ship. Looked like someone had taken a bite out of the middle.

I was curious so I looked it up on my computer on the Marine Traffic website.  The name of the ship was the Montford Point and it is what is referred to as a 'heavy lift ship'. I guess that is appropriate and possible since half of the ship is 'missing' and therefor it can carry a large and heavy cargo.

Marine Traffic.com is also available as a smart phone app so you can check and track marine traffic all over the world.

This could turn into a new hobby if I'm not careful.

Inaugural Obliteride invites the community to a free festival with live music

The first-ever Obliteride is more than a bike ride, it is a community celebration and gathering around the ultimate goal: ending cancer. So, grab your family and walk, pedal or take the bus to Seattle’s Magnuson Park on August 10 and 11 and join the festivities.

“Cancer affects all of us and we want the entire community to feel welcome to come on out to Magnuson Park and cheer on all the riders who have raised money for cancer research at Fred Hutch,” said Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director. “We’re lucky to have such an amazing institution right in our backyard.”

A finish-line festival with a full lineup of entertainment, including family-friendly bands, is planned for Obliteride weekend. The Nowhere Men, playing music of The Beatles, 80s Invasion, and Kalimba, an Earth, Wind and Fire cover band, are just a few of the groups that will contribute to the celebration.

Saturday, the Radio Disney Kid’s Zone will keep the little ones entertained. Sunday, the Not-Its!, a popular adult-savvy children’s group playing cool kids’ music, takes the stage. Children will also enjoy an 18-foot slide, a hydro blaster, bouncy house, bike-related crafts, a prize wheel and more. Guests can purchase food and beer at the park, with cash and proper photo ID. Parking is limited at Magnuson Park,

People interested in riding in Obliteride still have time to register. “Nearly anyone can do the 25-mile route,” Lavin said. “There are a few hills but nothing too intimidating, so dust off your bike or borrow a friend’s and join us!”

For more accomplished riders, there are 50, 100, and 180 mile routes. Maps

Community members are invited to get involved by lining the routes - three of which run through a large section of Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and perhaps a few Shoreline streets - and cheering on riders as they come through neighborhoods throughout western Washington. Bring signs honoring loved ones or friends who have battled cancer or are in the fight today.

Riders will leave Magnuson Park at 7:30am and most will return between 10am and 2pm on Saturday. The 180-mile riders finish on Sunday after spending the night at University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Maps of the four routes make it easy to support the riders.

Driven by the goal to end cancer, Obliteride is a new, community-wide effort to accelerate lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. We are creating a movement of people committed to obliterating cancer and saving lives faster. It culminates in a fundraising bike ride Aug. 9-11, 2013 that will be quintessentially Northwest. Thanks to anchor sponsors, University Village and The Sloan Foundation, and other inaugural sponsors, 100 percent of every dollar raised goes directly to breakthrough cancer research at Fred Hutch. Join us. Ride. Donate. Volunteer. Tell others. Ending cancer starts at Fred Hutch.

Piano Time painting in process

Clarkia Cobb painting music and manadals
for Piano Time 2013

Slugs, lizards, anemones and more! Five newly-donated pianos for Piano Time 2013 are now in the painting site and the artists are hard at work.

This year’s concoctions include themes of tide pools, landscape and ferries, slugs, lizards and music mandalas.

You can watch the artists at work in the donated storefront at 1508 NE 179th Street in North City between the water store and the nail salon. They are there at various times but with just ten more days to complete their creations you’re apt to find at least someone painting when you stop by.

Thanks to families who donated beloved, but no longer needed pianos, Prosser Piano for the piano pick-up, delivery and tuning, to the property owner for donation of the painting space and to 4Culture for helping make this happen with an Arts Project award.

Help celebrate Piano Time on Arts al Fresco on Thursday, August 1st at Shoreline City Hall and the Park at Town Center from 6:00-8:30pm.

These five pianos, along with seven from last year, will be out in public places all of August for everyone to play. Maps with locations and information will be available on August 1st.
For more information contact Ros Bird, Shoreline Public Art Coordinator.

Opportunity for local businesses to advertise at Brew Fest

From the 4-Corner Brew Fest Committee

Shoreline’s 4-Corner Brew Fest is a great way to support and advertise local community businesses.

In these challenging economic times it feels good to know, support and purchase items and services from individuals in your community who are practicing entrepreneurship.

Do you have a local business?

The 4-Corner Brew Fest is a great opportunity for Shoreline’s small businesses to shine out and let your neighbors know what you are selling and creating. It is a fun atmosphere to share what you do and how you manage your business. Nikki Mize of Whidbey Island Bank, and a supporter of the BrewFest every year, shared that " Brew Fest is a better way to meet the community and is more fun than a networking meeting."

As an advertising business at the Brew Fest you can have your own banner hanging in the courtyard and an opportunity to table information about your wares. We will post your information on our website, on Facebook, on Twitter, and in the Brew Fest Program. You can talk to the happy “Brew Festers” and know that you are also supporting your community, four neighborhood associations and the PTA Council  “The WORKS” program.

We can offer the following ways for our local businesses to have advertising privileges:
  • Contribute financially to Brew Fest
  • Contribute gift cards or other swag for door prizes
  • Have your employees volunteer for a shift (they can wear your business shirts!)
Brew Fest is a beautiful ‘win-win’ opportunity for all of us in Shoreline!

Are you a consumer?

As consumers, your purchasing items and services within your own locality, supports your neighbors and and community by circulating money back into your own neighborhood community. Purchasing items or services from your local businesses also supports familiar values, rather than purchasing items or services from some offshore or unknown locality with unknown principles.

It is also a great way to meet and make stronger bonds with your neighbors and friends.

Please contact Lisa Surowiec or Steve Kerr if you would like to join in and advertise your local business in this fun and worthy event. Shoreline is a great place to live and we want to be known for our support of local entrepreneurs.

See you Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the 4-Corners Brew Fest!

BrewFest is a volunteer organization from four neighborhood associations in Shoreline - Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, Innis Arden, and Richmond Beach.
