Shoreline Arts Festival: one last fish print

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Nothing is more iconic to the Shoreline Arts Festival than the fish prints. Parades of exotically clad drummers and dancers snaking through the site, vendors selling beautiful photos and creative art, ice cream sundaes, non-stop musical performances on two stages, Missoula Children's Theatre, cultural rooms - they are all good.

But nothing says "arts festival" like painting a cold fish and pressing it on a piece of paper. People who made fish prints as children are bringing their own children back to make their own fish print art.

Another very special event at the Arts Festival is the annual appearance of the Missoula Children's Theatre. Missoula sends out a small crew of youthful actors - perhaps 3-5 - who set up auditions for local children, who appear by the dozens. The kids are all ages, from elementary school to high school thespians who want to work with professionals. It is an audition, but it is also an acting lesson and a fun experience for the kids, whether they are picked or not.

The actors pick a large cast of kids to participate in the show, which is written to include 50-60 members. They rehearse for a week, a total of 4 ½ hours each day. At the end of the week, on Saturday, they put on two performances. Many of the parents volunteer with the show, making costumes and sets. It is very much a community project.

The auditions are amazing to watch (sorry, they are no longer open to the public). Every child feels empowered, shyness is left at the door, and they all blossom. The performance itself is astonishingly good - better than some professional companies I have seen.

Shoreline’s purchase of Brugger’s Bog Maintenance Facility

Brugger's Bog maintenance facility

On June 25, the King County Council voted unanimously to approve the sale of the County’s Brugger’s Bog Maintenance Facility to the City of Shoreline. The acquisition of the Brugger’s Bog Maintenance Facility is critical to the City’s future development, enabling it to meet its present and future growth needs.

The City will acquire the property for $2.9 million. In conjunction with the sale, the City and the County have entered into a joint use agreement allowing the County to continue using the site for fueling County vehicles and for decanting services. The City has derived great benefit from its partnership with the County. Shoreline currently contracts with the County for police, jail, court, and road services, and they are part of regional partnerships such as solid waste and animal control. By partnering with the County, the City is able to maximize Shoreline tax dollars and create efficiencies that would not be possible if it had to provide all of the services itself. The joint use agreement furthers that good working partnership.

Since incorporation, the City has used the one-acre Hamlin Park maintenance site to house both the Parks and Public Works maintenance operations. Over time, as the City has taken on more maintenance responsibilities, the Hamlin site has reached its maximum capacity.

The maintenance facility is not currently being used

The future assumption of the Ronald Wastewater District in 2017 and the acquisition of the Seattle Public Utility (SPU) water system in 2020 places additional demands on the City’s need for additional maintenance facility space.

Once the sale is final, the City will identify initial improvements to the site and begin its long-term planning process to prepare for when the City begins operating the wastewater and water utilities. Working with the community, the City will develop a master plan for the site along with Brugger’s Bog Park and the proposed future park at the Shoreline School District property formerly known as the Aldercrest Annex.

Sunset School Park Phase I Improvements coming this summer

Construction begins July 8-12 at the new Sunset School Park.

Improvements to be constructed this summer include: grading, adding 6” topsoil, seeding and installing irrigation for the open lawn area; adding asphalt paths around the open lawn area. The lawn area will be open for public use later this fall after the grass is well established.

The Play equipment has been repaired and ready for use this summer. Construction of the park along 10th Avenue NW will begin in July and continue throughout the summer. The park will remain open for use this summer including the play equipment, covered shelter, upper grass field and pedestrian access from west-east through the site. A portable restroom will be placed near the play equipment in a temporary location until after construction is complete.

A new community garden is expected to be built this winter and be operational in the spring of 2014. The City will be applying for a grant in June to help fund improvements to the upper field, new basketball court, and tot lot play equipment, and an enclosure for the portable restroom.

The park is the site of a closed and demolished Shoreline Schools elementary school (Sunset). It operates under an interlocal agreement, whereby the school district owns the land and can reclaim it at any time, but the city has the use of the land for a park. There is a similar arrangement at Paramount School Park. Neighbors want positive use of the land because vacant buildings attract vandalism and crime.

North Seattle Boys & Girls Club Celebrating 70 Years of Service

The North Seattle Boys / Girls Club, the oldest Club in King County, will host a “70th Anniversary Celebration” on July 20, 2013 at 7:00pm at their facility located at 8635 Fremont Ave North.  “So many people have made an impact on the youth of our community over the past 70 years and we are eager to bring everyone together,” says Club Director Joan Caldon.

The first Boys / Girls Club in King County was founded in 1943 as a result of a riot involving more than 100 teens that broke out on the corner of 85th and Greenwood in Seattle.
Police responded to the incident and looked for an answer to the overall issue of juvenile crime and vandalism, a growing problem in the community due to lack of parental supervision caused by World War II.
In response, Deputy Joe Woelfert opened the first Boys / Girls Club (originally called the Greenwood Boys Club) in Washington state. The Club was a great success, and within two years, eight Clubs sprouted up in the Seattle area. There are now 14 Boys & Girls Club facilities in King County that provide before and after school programs and services to over 16,000 youth and teens each year.

The “70th Anniversary Celebration,” open to the community, is for adults twenty-one and over and will feature appetizers and cocktails, a silent auction, alumni speeches, memorabilia displays, and dancing.  “We thought it was important to bring everyone together and celebrate in a fun atmosphere,” says Caldon.  “We hope to relive some great memories, share stories, and celebrate generations of impacting youth.”

For more information about the event or to purchase tickets contact Jeremy Peck at 425-443-0735 or go to the website.

Boys / Girls Clubs of King County exists to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. With 14 full-service Clubs and 28 before- and after-school program sites, the organization is one of the largest of its kind in the nation, serving 16,000 youth annually. Program areas offered to youth include character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, computer training and sports/fitness/recreation opportunities.

Kenmore and Shoreline win State Award for innovative cost savings

Shoreline Police Chief
Shawn Ledford
At its annual conference on June 27, the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) awarded the cities of Kenmore and Shoreline a Municipal Excellence Award for their shared police command model.

The AWC Municipal Excellence Award recognizes innovative projects that significantly improve the quality of life for citizens, establish partnerships, and build community support. This year, the cities of Kenmore and Shoreline entered the competition by submitting its shared police command program in the Innovative Costs Savings category.

“This is a story of officials in two cities who not only worked together to solve a problem, but who also had the creativity, leadership, and initiative to generate a partnership that resulted in significant savings and improved service delivery that would not have been realized before the problem presented itself,” said Kenmore City Manager Rob Karlinsey.

The cities of Kenmore and Shoreline contract with the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) for police services. Prior to 2011, Kenmore Police received command and administrative support from KCSO command staff located in the County’s Kenmore precinct office. This arrangement dramatically changed after a series of annexations by neighboring cities. As a result of these annexations, KCSO decided to close the Kenmore precinct and consolidate command and administrative support functions over to the precinct in Sammamish.

With the Sammamish Precinct more than 20 miles away, Kenmore was faced with a dilemma of having its mutual call response, administrative support, and supervision and command staff located too far away. That is when the police chiefs of Kenmore and Shoreline stepped up, got creative, and suggested a new partnership between the two contract cities. They proposed having the larger city of Shoreline provide Kenmore with contract city Chief oversight, shared patrol supervision, administrative support, and mutual call backup. This innovative approach is the first time in the history of KCSO contracting that another contract city has provided this type of service to another contract city.

“The new arrangement of shared supervision and resources has been very effective and has worked extremely well,” stated Shoreline Mayor Keith McGlashan. “The agreement has allowed both cities to work more collaboratively and realize great cost savings.”

Kenmore and Shoreline share resources without added staffing, resulting in contract cost savings to both cities. This particular innovative cost savings project resulted in over $600,000 saved in less than three years—and the cost savings will continue to accumulate each year and mount over the long term.

The benefits of Kenmore’s and Shoreline’s cost-savings partnership are best summarized by Shoreline Police Chief Shawn Ledford:

“This has been a creative partnership between the City of Shoreline, the City of Kenmore and the King County Sheriff’s Office. It has allowed each of our local governments to make significant strides towards some of our most important goals, which include being able to better serve our individual communities, improving and ensuring officer safety and being responsible stewards of limited public funds.
I strongly believe that the future of law enforcement lies in this type of cooperative working relationship among local and regional agencies. These partnerships are clearly the most efficient and cost effective way to meet the growing demand for public safety, a demand consistently voiced by both our citizens and local community leaders.”

More information about the boat capsizing at Saltwater Park

By Diane Hettrick

The sirens were from many vehicles and went on for so long that probably every person in Richmond Beach and Innis Arden knew that something serious was happening Friday evening.

We published the preliminary police account yesterday, with photos by Marc Weinberg. Today we have more photos, from Matt Mariner Broze, and more details from Matt, from the Shoreline Fire Department, and from an Innis Arden resident named Ross.

Cruise ship photo copyright Matt Mariner Broze

It seems likely that the small aluminum outboard boat was capsized by the cruise ship in this photo. Police reported the accident happened at 6:10pm. At 6:13pm Matt Broze took this photo of a cruise ship from Kyu Kyu Ac Park. Matt commented, that "Although the cruise ship didn't appear to be travelling especially fast, there were no other large ships on the water in that area that might have made a large wake."

Multiple jurisdictions responded, on both land and sea. Shoreline Fire had four fire trucks in the parking lot. On the water, a private boat was first on the scene, followed by the Bainbridge Fire boat, City of Edmonds "Marine 16"  Fire / Police / Rescue boat, also, according to Ross,

"a 44' RB-M from US Coast Guard Station Seattle, a boat from the US Coast Guard cutter Henry Blake (a buoy tender based in Everett), and a HH-65 helicopter from the Coast Guard air station in Port Angeles (which must have already been flying since it arrived from the South too quickly to have come from P.A.) all arrived about the same time."

The white cabin cruiser was first on the scene and they picked up two of the men, who had stayed with the overturned boat. They transferred them to the Bainbridge Fire boat, which beached their boat to bring them to the waiting Shoreline Fire and Medics.

The third man swam to shore. Shoreline Fire reports that an onlooker swam out to meet him in case he needed help. He apparently not only made it to shore on his own, but walked up the trail to the parking lot.

Matt reports that the man in the white t-shirt, center in front in the crowd scene, is the man who swam to shore. The man in blue to the left is a Shoreline Firefighter.

The other two were loaded onto a small John Deere ATV which belongs to the Parks Department, and taken to the Shoreline Fire medics. The three were taken to the hospital as a precaution, but were reported to be "in good shape and safe."

Beware the dragon swimming through the hedge

An enthusiastic crowd created foliage hats at the Kruckeberg booth, bought raffle tickets from the quilters, watched the dancers in the Arab room, watched their children make art projects and fish prints and bought wonderful things from the vendors such as the diaphanous scarf that folds into eighteen different styles.

Almost half the visitors were wearing foliage hats
made at the Kruckeberg booth

Our photographer Jerry Pickard was checking it all out and taking photographs. The Shoreline Arts Fair continues on Sunday, from 10am to 5pm at the Shoreline Center.

Local music: Shoreline rock band Imperials plays at the Comet Tavern July 4th

By Carl Dinse

A local music rock band - Imperials - from Shoreline, Washington will be playing at the Comet Tavern July 4th, 2013.  The show starts at 7pm.
Keegan King, Morgan Chosnyk, Louie Husted

Imperials began as a smaller group in 2008 known as Broken Knives. They were started by Morgan Chosnyk and Louie Husted but shortly after broke up when Louie moved to Los Angeles, CA.

In May 2012 Louie moved back up to Shoreline, and along with Morgan, and Jeff Alvarez, they formed the band Imperials.

Morgan did lead vocals, Louie was bass guitar and Jeff Alvarez was on drums. Keegan King was asked to join on guitar in August 2012. They played three live shows in Seattle before the band decided to take a hiatus at the beginning of January 2013.

During this time Jeff Alvarez had quit the band and Alex Hawley joined the band as a bass guitar player and practiced with Keegan and Louie with some new songs. Later on Morgan started writing and singing for the band again in practice and they are returning to the stage at the Comet Tavern July 4, 2013 at 7pm.

Current line-up:
Morgan Chosnyk - Lead Vocals and Drums
Louie Husted - Drums and Guitar
Keegan King - Guitar and Keyboards
Alex Hawley - Bass

Their music genre is self-described as closest to Goth Rock, Dark Wave, rooted with a little good ol' Seattle 90's Grunge. The band's influences are Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Susie and the Banshies, and Horror movie soundtracks.

You can hear them on Soundcloud but I recommend seeing them live as they bring much more energy to the stage than they do to the studio.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: The Diviners

The Diviners by Libba Bray
Evie McNeill is a thoroughly modern flapper, exiled from her Ohio hometown for revealing the unwholesome secrets of the son of a powerful local man, and sent (happily) to live with her uncle at the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition and the Occult in Prohibition-era New York City.

Once there, it becomes obvious to Evie and the reader that the "creepy-crawlies" aren't confined to Uncle Will's museum. There are strange things afoot ... and one of them is a serial killer, returned from the dead and determined to finish the grusome rituals that will release the Beast and drop Hell on the waiting world.

With a huge cast of characters, lots of historical context, accurate political, social and musical references, this book is a terrific immersion into 1920's New York. It's also a ripping good mystery and thrilling horror story with just a touch of romance.

The audiobook read by January LaVoy is outstanding, and successfully created all the suspense, terror, and fun of the book in the front seat of my pickup truck.

Pos-i-tute-ly adorable book trailer available online HERE.
Search for "Diviners Radio" on You Tube to find episodes of the story interpreted as a radio play

With blood and guts on the page, this book may be overwhelming for squeamish or timid readers. Be bold if you are able. Highly recommended--I can hardly wait for the second book!

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Metro Bus Survey for Route 358

Aurora Avenue North is one of the most heavily used transportation corridors in King County.

Carrying large numbers of vehicles and transit riders, it connects neighborhoods, serves major recreation and event venues as well as business and retail centers, and it is a key thoroughfare for commuters traveling daily to and from work.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is working on a number of ideas and projects to help all traffic move better in this corridor, and to support King County Metro Transit’s new RapidRide E Line when it begins service in 2014.

To assist in this effort, SDOT is conducting a survey for riders of Metro bus Route 358 and others. The survey is open until July 5. Metro encourages riders with an interest in the Aurora Avenue North corridor to participate in the survey.

Members of the Arab community gathered in Shoreline's Hamlin Park Sunday, June 23, 2013 for a picnic which served as a kick-off for planning for the Arab Festival to be held at Seattle Center October 12-13, 2013.

The picnic was a social event, to give people of Arab heritage a chance to meet and socialize.

"We hold several picnics during the summer", said Huda Giddens, President of the Board of Directors of the Arab Center of Washington, "holding them in different locations to make it convenient for people." A previous picnic was held in Kent and the next one is planned for August 17 in Sammamish.

"Everyone is welcome to attend", said Giddens. "We welcome those whose heritage includes Arab, as well as anyone interested in the Middle East."

The sponsoring organization, the Arab Center of Washington, is a cultural and heritage group, with no political or religious affiliations. Its goal is to increase the understanding of Arabs and Arab culture and to bring people together.

Those at the Shoreline picnic represented at least a dozen different Arab countries, either as their country of origin, or through a parent or grandparent.
