Boys Soccer: Bonney Lake in semifinals for the first time in school history

Bonney Lake reached the final four for the first time in school history.

From our news partner, The Seattle Times
Tyler John scored twice Saturday night as Bonney Lake beat Shorewood 4-2 in a Class 3A quarterfinal game at Sunset Chev Stadium.
The Panthers (17-4) earlier in the week got their first state-playoff win, 1-0 over Lakeside in the first round.
They will meet Hanford in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. Bainbridge and Shorecrest are the other semifinalists.
Bonney Lake overcame an early deficit after Shorewood's Abdul Abdulla scored after a throw-in in the fourth minute.

3A Boys Soccer: Wickstrom scores twice, Shorecrest stops Hazen, 4-1

Axel Wickstrom, after being cleared to play following an appeal of a suspension, scored twice as the Scots reached the state semifinals.

From our news partner, The Seattle Times

There was plenty of doubt last week for Shorecrest senior midfielder Axel Wickstrom.
He wasn't sure he'd get to play in the Scots' 4-1 triumph over Hazen in the Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinals Saturday at Renton Stadium. Last Wednesday, Wickstrom had drawn a one-match suspension from a red-card ejection in a first-round win over Liberty.
Once he was cleared to play after an appeal, Wickstrom and the Scots left little doubt on the field.

Here’s a story about the Wednesday Shorecrest victory over Liberty from The Seattle Times:

Shorecrest blanks Liberty, 2-0
Corey Stever, a recent call-up from the JV team, had a big assist and goalkeeper Sam Schober notched his eighth shutout as the Scots advanced.
Corey Stever just started to feel like part of the Shorecrest boys’ soccer team.
Stever, a sophomore defender, was called up from the junior varsity six matches ago.
His impact couldn't have been more profound Wednesday night. Stever assisted on the first goal seven minutes into the second half as the road-warrior Scots eliminated Liberty 2-0 in the first round of the Class 3A state boys soccer tournament at Liberty High School.
Goalkeeper Sam Schober registered his eighth shutout of the season for the Scots, who were third in the WesCo 3A South Division in the regular season.
Shorecrest junior Chris Iacolucci corralled a bouncing ball from about 13 yards away and volleyed home a left-footed shot for a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. The Scots have 12 shutouts.
Shorecrest played a man down from the 51st minute on as Wickstrom was sent off with a red card for maliciously stepping on Liberty's Tyler Jensen. Wickstrom was hit with the ejection for what the head referee Frank Jaramillo termed "serious foul play," and that will likely lead to at least a one-match suspension for Wickstrom.

Shorecrest advances to State soccer semifinals while Shorewood eliminated

Updated 11:26pm
The Shorecrest boys’ soccer team advanced to a State 3A semifinal game against Bainbridge Friday at 2pm at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup after a 4-1 victory over Hazen at Renton Stadium.

Shorewood was eliminated Saturday with a 4-2 loss at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner to No. 1 ranked Bonney Lake.

Shorewood coach Bill Wilkins said that the game against Bonney Lake Saturday in Sumner came on a great night for soccer with no rain, warm weather and no wind. Things started well for Shorewood with a goal in the 4th minute. Taj McChesney threw a ball in to Abdul Abdulla, who proceeded to dribble past two defenders and fire a great shot past the goalie for a 1-0 lead. This held for about 20 minutes before Bonney Lake scored off a header that went from wide of the far post and glanced off the near post for a game tying goal. The half ended 1-1.

It took a about six minutes for Bonney Lake to take the lead in the second half with a nice finish after attacking down the left side. About 10 minutes later Lake scored again off some solid combination passes for a 3-1 lead. Bonney Lake’s final goal came off a header from about 12 yards out. Shorewood pressed hard and scored a second goal with 16 minutes left when Alex Payton headed in a pass from Matt Owen. A third opportunity was cleared away at the last moment with about 6 minutes left. Bonney Lake was able to hold Shorewood off and take the victory.

Calvin Crawford played in goal for Shorewood.

Bonney Lake will play Hanford in the semi finals Friday.

Shorewood finished its season with a 16-3-1 record. McChesney led the team in scoring with 11 goals and 2 assists for 24 points.

Ryu out of County Council race

By Evan Smith

State Rep. Cindy Ryu will not run in the coming election for a position representing north King County on the Metropolitan King County Council.

Ryu was a finalist when Council members from the County's other eight Council district appointed Rod Dembowski in February to represent Council District 1 after former Councilman Bob Ferguson left the position to become State Attorney General. She announced at the time that she would challenge Dembowski for a full term.

She said May 9 that she was reconsidering running because the special legislative session that started May 13 would delay her ability to raise the $150,000 she thought she needed.

Finally, she decided not to run, meaning that Dembowski will face two little-known challengers, John Fray and Naomi Wilson, in the non-partisan August primary, with the top two vote-getters advancing to the November general election.

Theatre review: Sweeney Todd at Shoreline CC

Saturday, May 18, 2013

Sweeney Todd has a 3pm matinee on Sunday, May 19th, and performances next weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street opened Friday, March 17th at the Shoreline Community College Theater to a moderately sized, but appreciative audience. All in all, it was an entertaining performance of what is a very difficult work to stage and perform. However, having said that, I’d be remiss in not making a few comments about the specifics of this opening performance.

The action seemed to begin when the performers began milling about the stage. The set was well designed and appeared to fit with the period and the space allowed for it. The costuming was well done. Then, suddenly people in street clothes appeared and began to introduce themselves and make various comments about how glad they were that we were attending. The actors on stage froze (most of them). The mood was interrupted.

(Is it just me, or are other people put off by this phenomenon of unnecessary people wanting to share the stage with the actors? I’m there to see the performance and am put off by what I see as an unwanted intrusion into the action. Now, in this age of electronics, I see the need to ask the audience to turn off their beeps, bells, and whistles since many of us seem to forget that we are not in our living rooms watching a screen that won’t be bothered by the noise, but can’t we leave it at that?)

The music and action began and despite a few opening night technical glitches with lighting, sound, and follow spots, the audience was moved along through the plot without too much further distraction.

An outstanding performance by Macall Gordon as Mrs. Lovett really made the show and was helped by the supporting roll of Tobias Ragg played by Justin Johns. In sharp contrast, Mark Abel as Judge Turpin was a weak link and poor Katie Poor was unconvincing as the Beggar Woman. An outstanding performance was delivered by the barber chair in the second act.

Music direction by Charles Enlow seemed up to the task as was the orchestral accompaniment conducted by Bruce Monroe. Stage direction by Teresa Thuman was quite entertaining, but I wish that during a freeze, ALL of the performers on the stage would freeze. And why did it seem that in the second act the ensemble was watching the action in the basement bake shop when they could not have been present?

Oh, and about that set; what a wonderful central pivoting piece that allowed for very quick and effective scene changes. But why was it only sometimes turned by performers in costume? And who were those people in black street clothes that occasionally showed up on stage to do the moving? I’m fine with a tech crew moving the set during a black out, but come on, during action? Get them some costumes too!

Theater is magical, intended to take us to a different place.  Sweeney Todd, while dark and a reflection of some of the worst in us, is magical in its own somewhat perverse way. If it weren’t for the distractions that I mentioned, I think this performance could have taken me away with it.

Football kick-off meeting for T-Bird Families

Come to the Shoreline Stadium, 18560 1st Ave NE Shoreline 98155, on Tuesday May, 21st at 7:30pm to meet the coaching staff, learn about the program and get involved in T-Bird football!

T-Bird Football is one of the most exciting aspects of Shorewood community life. Friday night games are one of the largest and best social events where the whole city comes out to cheer for our team and each player knows that they are part of something big.

Each year our team grows stronger and stronger and this year we ask all our athletes to consider coming out to contribute to the team and to play under the lights at Shoreline Stadium. Whether your student has played for years or your student has never played football before, whether they are a freshman, a senior or anywhere in between, your student-athlete can make a contribution in football. The size of the turnout and the range of athletic talents can all make a contribution to success.

Shorewood football also offers young people a safe, organized athletic training program through the summer, a summer football camp, and a challenging fall season. Many of our football players participate in a wide variety of other activities and sports in addition to football and they look on their football experience as one of the highlights of high school.

Shoreline children do well in Brazilian Ju Jitsu tournament

Shoreline MMA team with their winnings

Shoreline MMA, under the leadership of Aric Wiseman, sent a team to Bremerton Saturday to compete in the NAGA (North American Grappling Association) grappling tournament - their first time in the Seattle area.

Shoreline MMA has a children's Brazilian Ju Jitsu class taught by Aric and it is from this class that the competitors came.

Three of the four gold winners

Says Aric, "The team did very well! Most of the Shoreline MMA competitors competed in both Gi and No-Gi divisions. These divisions were broken up into ability, weight and age categories to ensure the most competitive matches for each grappler. Of the 10 competitors from Shoreline MMA seven fought in both Gi and No-Gi divisions and four of them went undefeated and scored double gold. The award for your first first place finish is a real, full size samurai sword. If you win gold in your second division then you receive a medal."

These same kids recently competed at the Arlington Submission Challenge, held on May 4th, Edmonds Submission Challenge and the large Revolution Tournament in Bonney Lake.
