Years of experience managing commercial and home vegetable gardens in the Northwest have taught us that there are many unwanted insect pests and diseases that food gardeners will almost surely see during the season. The best chance for success in combating these problems is to anticipate them - and to be prepared to act even before they arrive. We will share photos and discuss preventative measures that you can take before problems arise and, and arm you with an arsenal of earth-friendly and sustainable solutions to existing problems.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: The Chronicles of Harris Burdick

The Chronicles of Harris Burdick (edited by) Chris Van Allsburg
with an introduction by Lemony Snicket

In 1984, enigmatic images and snippets of story supposedly created by a man called Harris Burdick were released in a book called The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. According to Chris Van Allsburg, drawings and captions belonging to fourteen unusual stories were left with a children's book publisher by Mr. Burdick, who promised to return the next day with the remainder...a promise that was never fulfilled.

The images and their unusual captions have intrigued many people since that time, and many children--and adults--have written their own tales to accompany the pictures. Now, in The Chronicles of Harris Burdick, well-known authors take up the Harris Burdick challenge: Tabitha King, Stephen King, Jon Scieszka, Sherman Alexie, Gregory Maguire, Cory Doctorow and others have constructed their own tales in order to delight and mystify.

I am delighted by these stories, but I hope that their publication doesn't stifle the creativity inspired by the original Harris Burdick picturebook. Read the stories, and enjoy them...and then, perhaps, try writing a tale of your own to accompany the strange pictures. Here's one from the original book to get you started:
Captain Tory He swung his lantern three times and slowly the schooner appeared.

Recommended for ages 10 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Oil paintings by Patty Haller and John Smither at The Gallery at Town Center

The Gallery at Town Center presents:

Oil Paintings by
Patty Haller
John Smither

April 9 – May 19, 2013

The Gallery at Town Center features pastel and oil paintings by Patty Haller and John Smither this month. Celebrate the coming of spring by stepping in to see the work by these talented artists. The Gallery is located on the inside lower level of the Lake Forest Park Town Center, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155. Hours are 12-5 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

More about the artists:

Paintings by Patty Haller
at The Gallery at Town Center

Nature to me is a rich perpetual experience, where the whole seems ordered but the details are wild. I want both in my art. For this exhibit, I’ve chosen paintings that celebrate spring and the resurgence of life. I believe we underestimate the wonder of the natural world. Thoughtful observation of nature has the power to heal and invigorate, de-clutter our thoughts and clarify our intentions.

Paintings by John Smither at the
Gallery at Town Center

My concerns lie more with the capturing of a feeling of time and place rather than an accurate physical rendering. I take fairly simple subjects and inject them with visual rhythm, gesture and emotional interpretation.

The Gallery also features an array of handmade work by over 90 local artists. The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations. Proceeds from the Gallery at Lake Forest Park Town Center help fund these programs and events.

Senior Center is packed for forum on 185th St Station

Moderator Dale Lydin, with microphone, addresses the audience
at the community forum for the 185th Street Station

The meeting hall of the Shoreline / Lake Forest Park Senior Center was packed Tuesday night, with close to 150 Shoreline citizens listening to leaders from three Seattle areas which are years ahead of Shoreline in welcoming a Sound Transit station to their neighborhoods.

Tony To, a business owner from the Rainier Valley, talked about the experience of being the first neighborhood to get rail lines and stations. He talked about how Sound Transit has changed from those first days. ST went into their neighborhood, telling people what they were going to do and providing little avenue for community input or influence. The community responded by digging in its heels and putting all its energy into fighting Sound Transit. The process was delayed and expensive. MLK Way was closed for three years and many businesses did not survive.

Ryl Anderson addresses a question to panelists
Cathy Hillenbrand, Craig Benjamin, and Tony To
while moderator Dale Lydin looks on

Cathy Hillenbrand represented the Capitol Hill neighborhood whose station is just now being completed. They, with a great deal of time, energy, learning, and volunteers, were able to work collaboratively with Sound Transit, the Seattle City Council, and the neighborhood organizations.

They spent a long time deciding what their vision was for the station area, and a longer time trying to convince Sound Transit to change to their vision. They were only partly successful. They wanted their station inside a building, not an open plaza. But their compromise will give them space for a farmers' market and festivals.

Craig Benjamin represented the Cascade Bicycle Club which got involved in the Northgate station when they found out that Sound Transit planned to put more of its financial resources into a 900 car parking garage, instead of taking steps to help people who wanted to be able to bike or walk to the station. Cascade is a very successful political lobby, so they were able to use their members to advocate successfully for their view, including a new pedestrian bridge over I-5 which will link North Seattle Community College back to Northgate.

The room was close to capacity

All panelists stressed that Sound Transit should be a community partner, but neighbors should understand ST's constraints, financial, legal, and regulatory. They praised the early start of the 185th Street Station committee, and said that getting a new station is exciting, energizing, and can be an economic boon to the community.
