Shoreline Community College receives Sodexo Foundation Grant to fight childhood hunger on Global Youth Service Day 2013

Shoreline Community College (SCC), has been awarded a Sodexo Foundation Youth Grant to support the school in leading a community service project that addresses the issue of childhood hunger. Service activities will take place on Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013, an international service event celebrating the contributions of children and youth.

Shoreline CC’s project will:
  1. conduct a campus-wide food drive to benefit local families;
  2. sponsor a student service day of volunteering;
  3. sponsor a Hunger Awareness Campaign Global Youth Service Day event on the SCC campus on April 26. This event includes a community conversation surrounding hunger awareness and a healthy meal option by the Deep Roots Kitchen Project (DRKP), a Shoreline CC student program that promotes healthy eating and good nutrition. Additionally, there will be student poster session that highlights hunger awareness and nutrition.
The Hunger Awareness Campaign has three goals: to increase awareness of hunger issues in our community, provide education to promote healthy eating and good nutrition, and provide supplemental food for those in immediate need in the community.

Shoreline CC volunteers will be situated at three area grocery store locations (listed below) and need campus and community volunteers for two available shifts (10:00am – 1:00pm, 12:30-3:30pm). All food donations and proceeds will directly benefit Hopelink, Greenwood Food Bank, and North Helpline. Interested parties can sign up online.

King County Metro may be cutting a lot of service: what does it mean for us?

By Brian Doennebrink

Perhaps you have heard: King County Metro may have to cut 17% of their service hours, or 600,000 hours. That is a lot of service. To put it into perspective, Community Transit – which provides bus services to/from/within Snohomish County - operates or contracts for bus service totaling just under 612,000 last year.

Why is Metro potentially cutting so much service? Economics. Like most of the state’s transit agencies, Metro relies heavily on a share of the state sales tax, and due to the economy, those revenues have fallen 18% between 2009 and 2011. Metro was able to stave off cuts sooner due to an aggressive response to a performance audit that was conducted at the agency, with millions of cost savings, some one-time, most ongoing. They have also raised fares four years in a row. The King County Council also passed a temporary “congestion relief fee” – but that $20 vehicle license addition expires in June 2014.

Metro’s Strategic Plan Progress Report, required to be presented this month, shows that their current system has issues with quality, i.e. over-crowding and unreliability, and not meeting their target guidelines. If Metro’s financial circumstances do not change for the better significantly, something like the below – but with planning principles applied, e.g. restructuring – will be implemented in four parts of roughly 150,000 service hours cut each – over a year’s period starting in the fall of 2014. The below, a “data exercise” that follows their service guidelines, would eliminate 65 routes and reduce or revise 86 other routes, leaving only 66 routes, about 28% of their total, unchanged. However, getting to those routes would be. Example: if the #331 is eliminated, folks along that line would have to drive to their nearest bus, such as at Aurora Village or near Lake Forest Park Mall, adding more traffic to the roads and more competition for limited parking.

The hypothetical service reduction illustrates what could happen to these Shoreline/Lake Forest Park routes:

Could change:

  • Buses to/from downtown: #5 and #355 (Shoreline Community College/SCC); #73 Briarcrest; #77 North City; #308, #309, #312, and #372 Lake Forest Park. Others: #243 between Ridgecrest and Bellevue, #331 LFP and SCC, #373 Aurora Village and UW.

Could experience overcrowding and reliability issues:

  • #330 between LFP and SCC. Buses to/from Northgate: #345 (SCC), #346 (Aurora Village), #347 (Ballinger Terrace), #348 (Richmond Beach). Lastly, #358 express (Aurora Village and downtown).

If no new funding for transit happens this legislative session –  scheduled to end April 27 – Metro planners will work on service reduction proposals that we would see in public meetings next fall which, without an indication of mitigation in the beginning of the next legislative session (January 2014), will take effect in September 2014.

Two tiers of tickets are available: "General" ticket holders will have the opportunity to enjoy the concert up-close, while "Premiere" ticket holders will also have the opportunity to meet and take photos with Damian after the concert.

A limited number of tickets are available online. Act quickly before tickets are all gone!

No lines, no waiting at this Saturday’s Richmond Beach Blood Drive

The Big Bus can take ten donors at a time -
no lines, no waiting
Come on down!

By Tom Petersen

PSBC Sending Big Bus

The Puget Sound Blood Center is calling on all donors – and their friends – to come donate blood before leaving on Spring Break. The big bus will be in Richmond Beach this Saturday, April 20, in front of the Fire Safety Center at the corner of Richmond Beach Road and 20th Ave NW, from 10am to 4pm.

The large bloodmobile has an extra technician, a dining-room style recovery area and snack counter, a volunteer to dispense the goodies and good cheer, two screening rooms and four beds. With the ability to take ten donors an hour, everybody that wants to donate, plus their Blood Buddies, should be in and out with minimal waiting, and no one should be turned away.

Sign Up or Walk Up

PSBC still recommends making an online appointment so they have an idea of what to expect. It’s understood that on Saturdays, people like to be flexible, so of course walking up is fine.

Urgent Needs: O neg, A neg, B neg

The rarer blood types are at critically low levels this week, so people with O-, A-, and B- are especially encouraged to come to Richmond Beach, or go to any other PSBC mobile drive in the coming days. There are also permanent storefront donation centers in Lynnwood and North Seattle, open every day.

New Goals for Richmond Beach

Over 36 potential blood donors came to each of the last three Puget Sound Blood Center events in Richmond Beach, but the little bloodmobile could only take 30 in a day. The “Big Unit,” with its capacity of 50, will solve this problem of “coagulation.” This raises new expectations, though: the old neighborhood record was 31, but the PSBC would like to see at least 36 donors Saturday. Local organizers want the full 50, of course!

Shoreline City Council Meeting April 15, 2013

Notes from Shoreline City Council Meeting April 15, 2013
By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

Mayor McGlashan proclaimed April 22, 2013 as Earth Day in Shoreline. The Proclamation  calls upon businesses and residents to celebrate this 43rd Anniversary of Earth Day by committing to protect our natural environment for ourselves, our children and future generations.

One successful example of a business’s commitment to protect our natural resources and public health is the work done by the Bartell Drugs store in Shoreline. By collecting fluorescent light bulbs and unwanted medicines from residents, Bartell Drugs helps safely dispose of hazardous waste that could pollute our waters, impact aquatic species, and contaminate our food and water supplies.

In addition, their collection and recycling of cell phones and rechargeable batteries from residents conserves our natural resources; and their participation in Seattle City Light’s Twist and Save fluorescent bulb program reduces greenhouse gases and conserves electrical energy. Tim Thomas, Manager of the Shoreline Bartell’s Store, accepted the Proclamation.

Dick Deal Director of Shoreline Parks, Recreation, Cultural Services honored outgoing members of the Parks, Recreation, Cultural Services and Tree Board. Among them Chairman William Clements and Carolyn Ballo were honored as tireless workers, “long term members who have served the maximum amount of time allowed. They served the City before the City decided to acquire the parks from King County.”

The Council approved Ordinance No. 657, vacating the unused right-of-way north of intersection of NE 149th St. and 30th Ave. NE., with the conditions of granting access easements to Ronald Sewer District and Seattle City Light. The Petitioner has agreed to pay the fair market value of $39,312 for the 3,788 sq.ft. of vacated right of way.

Chief of Police Shawn Ledford gave the Council the 2012 Police Service Report. The report contains information on the highlights, data and accomplishments of the Shoreline Police Department to support its mission, goals and objectives. Shoreline Officers responded to 12,045 dispatched calls for service (DCFS) in 2012. The DCFS in 2011 were 11,343. The average police response time to an emergency call for service was 3.39 minutes; the national standard is 5 minutes. Burglaries increased 19% from the previous year from 351 to 418. Thefts from vehicles remained the same, 395 in 2011 to 394 in 2012. Auto thefts decreased from 136 in 2011 to 111 in 2012.

Chief Ledford said of the increase in burglaries 40% were crimes of opportunity (nonforced crimes). Of the forced crimes many were where the perpetrators  kicked in doors looking for gold to sell to gold buyers to buy drugs. Chief ledford said as part of  the department’s neighborhood outreach they would suggest residents put 3 inch screws into their door jams making it very difficult to kick in. He said the department  now has assigned a Special Emphasis Team to cover property crimes.

Councilmember Hall said the city is fortunate to have the resources so that Shoreline Police are able to respond in a timely manner to every crime whether small or large, making Shoreline a safer place to live.

Shots fired in police pursuit in Shoreline April 5

From the Washington State Patrol

At approximately 2350 hours on April 4, 2013 a Washington State Patrol trooper assigned to Snohomish County was on patrol on SR-99 near 196th Street in Lynnwood. We are told the trooper was attempting to stop an early model dark colored Mazda passenger car for a lane travel violation. The driver did not stop at which time a pursuit began. The pursuit continued south to N 175th street, then west on 175th a few blocks where it ended near two homes at the end of 175th. A second trooper (in his own patrol car) joined the pursuit.

As the troopers attempted to get the man to stop, the driver plowed his Mazda into one of their patrol cars.

Both troopers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect at least once in the leg.

It is still under investigation if the driver was shot inside his car or if the shootings happened as he tried to run away from the scene.

The driver (suspect) was the only person in the vehicle.

The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg.  His condition was not life threatening.

Drugs/Alcohol may be factor and remains under investigation.

SCC Baseball splits four games with Bellevue College over weekend

Luke Merkel scored the winning run

The Shoreline Community College Baseball Team split four games with Bellevue College over the weekend, winning 2 of 3 games against Bulldogs on Sunday at Meridian Park in Shoreline.

On Saturday, Bellevue dominated in the first game of the series, winning 8-1 in a 7 inning game. Game 2 at BC was then hailed out by the freak storm that passed through Seattle on Saturday. Bellevue was up 4-0 in the top of the third when the game was called due to weather. It was decided that suspended game would be finished at Meridian Park prior to the start of the regularly schedule doubleheader between the two schools on Sunday.

In the conclusion of the "Hailed" out game from Saturday, the Dolphins fell to the Bulldogs 12-2 in eight innings as SCC could never overcome the 4-0 lead BC had built on Saturday.

In Game 1 of the regularly schedule doubleheader, SCC ace, Jason Shaw (5-1), pitched a four hitter in SCC's 5-1 victory and Kainoai Ahsing-Kanhanui had 2 hits including a double to lead the Dolphins offense. The Dolphins took full advantage of 2 errors and 4 BC walks in the game to combine with 6 hits to win. Shoreline also stole 3 bases in the game.

In Game 2, SCC overcame a 3-0 deficient in the first inning to win 5-4 in 10 innings. SCC scored 2 in the 2nd, 1 in 5th and 1 in the 7th to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the 10, Luke Merkel reached first baseball to lead-off the inning, stole 2nd for the third time of the game and then Kainoai Ahsing-Kanhanui doubled to the opposite field to drive in the winning run. Henry McAree (3-0) picked up the win for SCC with four innings of scoreless relief, allowing 1 hit and one walk with 4 strikeouts.

SCC goes to 14-10-1 on the season, 2-6 in the NWAACC Northern Region. Bellevue falls to 16-11 and 6-6 in the region. Shoreline takes on Douglas College next weekend in a NWAACC Northern Region  four game series, with games 1 & 2 to play in Vancouver, BC on Saturday starting at 1:00pm and back to Meridian Park on Sunday for games 3 and 4 starting at 3:00pm.

Sound Transit Light Rail station - are you in the bull's eye?

Map from City of Shoreline website

The Lynnwood Link for Sound Transit light rail is deep in the planning process. The trains will run along the east side of I-5 in the public right of way, possibly on elevated rails. The route runs the length of Shoreline, up to Lynnwood.

There may be two stations in Shoreline. Consensus is to site one at N 185th, but the other has not been decided - possibly 145th in Seattle or Shoreline.

The map above shows the impact area for the station at 185th. There is no question that the areas in the impact area will experience tremendous change as the station is built out over the next ten years.

General Timeline
  • May 14, 2012 – City Adoption of Station Area Framework Policies
  • Spring 2013 – City Begins Station Area Planning Process
  • Spring 2013 – Participation of Sound Transit Draft EIS
  • Summer 2013 – Sound Transit Board Identifies the Preferred Alternative
  • 2014 – City Update of Land Use Map and Zoning
  • 2014-2015 – Sound Transit Final EIS
  • 2018-2023 – Construction of Light Rail and Stations
  • 2023 – Projected Light Rail Service Begins

Neighborhood Associations in the impact zone are being proactive. The neighborhoods of Echo Lake, North City, and Meridian Park have formed a 185th Street Station committee and are collecting information and making contacts, so residents in the impact area will have the best information to make decisions, be prepared, and have some meaningful input into the planning.

One neighborhood meeting has already been held.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2013, a community forum will be held with representatives of the Rainier Valley, Capitol Hill, and Northgate neighborhoods. These Seattle neighborhoods are in different stages of development for their light rail stations.

Dale Lydin, co-chair of the committee and Echo Lake board member, says:

In sections of the LINK Light Rail system that have been completed, the stations have been a catalyst for redevelopment and growth. Multi-story, residential and commercial buildings and parking structures have replaced single family homes.
We invite people to come hear about the experiences these Seattle neighborhoods had with Light Rail redevelopment, so we can learn what to expect from the planning and construction of our future Light Rail Station.

The meeting will be held at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, 18560 1st Avenue NE in Shoreline from 7:00 to 9:00pm.  Refreshments and childcare will be provided.

The Legion’s success is entirely dependent on active membership, participation and volunteerism by members of Legion Posts in local communities. The Legion belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives. Post 227 is named for Starr Sutherland Jr., who was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge and is buried in France.

In the Boys State program, founded in 1935, the Post helps select high school junior students each year to attend Boys State at a college of university to learn about the functioning of state government. Two Boys Staters from each state are selected to participate in Boys Nation, where they travel to Washington, DC, to learn about our US government.

In the American Legion Oratorical Contest, founded in 1938, high school students under the age of 20 are chosen to compete in speaking on a topic chosen each year by the American Legion. Winners at the local level advance to compete at the state level. State winners travel to Indianapolis to compete in national competition. Winners are rewarded with college scholarships funded by local posts and other organizations.

Post 227 helps to support the Special Olympics program. For over four decades, this program has been offering adults and children with intellectual disabilities year-around training and competitions in Olympic-style sports.

Post 227 provides volunteers and funds to the VA Hospital, the Fisher House, the USO at SeaTac airport and Salvation Army Housing for homeless veterans. We also support other groups that are assisting active duty personnel, veterans and their families who have recently returned from the Middle East.

The above programs are a sampling of Post 227 current interests. Our activities are limited only by the willingness of post members to suggest projects and to participate in them.

Curtain Up! Light the lights! Gypsy plays at Seattle Musical Theatre

Cast members of Gypsy
at Seattle Musical Theatre
Seattle Musical Theatre wraps up their 35th anniversary season with the musical masterpiece, Gypsy, performing April 26 through May 19, 2013.

Clearly on the top of almost every best musical list, this gem shares the intense tale of Seattle’s own Gypsy Rose Lee's younger years with her larger than life stage mom, Rose. Gypsy follows Rose’s incessant drive to push her daughters, Louise (who would later become Gypsy Rose Lee) and June to the big time on the vaudeville circuit in the 1920’s. While often hysterically funny, Gypsy also shows the raw side of dramatic ambition and the emptiness that both success and failure can bring.

This self described musical fable is an adaptation of Gypsy: A Memoir, the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, who began performing in the vaudeville houses in Seattle as a young child. While June became the distinguished motion-picture star June Havoc, Louise had a rich career as an actress, author and playwright while starring in burlesque, theatre, movies and her own talk show. However, she was best known for emphasizing the “tease” in striptease. As her son Eric Preminger states, “not bad for a poor girl from Seattle whose mother insisted had no talent.”

Originally opening in 1959, Gypsy was the collaboration of all the genius minds of Broadway’s golden era. Coming off their success with West Side Story, lyricist Steven Sondheim, choreographer Jerome Robbins and writer Arthur Laurents joined forces with Jule Styne to write the music.

Nominated for eight Tony Awards during its original run, Gypsy went on to win multiple Tonys, Drama Desk and Critic’s Circle Awards in revivals from 1973 to 2008. The musical features a little bit of everything, including both intense dramatic and comedic scenes exploring varied topics such as child abuse, early love and mental illness, to classic soft shoe and tap numbers and burlesque spectacles.

Audiences will surely recognize some of the biggest show tunes of all time including, “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Together,” “Wherever We Go,”  “Rose’s Turn,” and “Let Me Entertain You.”

The Atomic Bombshells and the Basics of Burlesque
In tribute to the burlesque history of the story, Seattle Musical Theatre welcomes Seattle’s internationally celebrated, polished and perfectly-choreographed, professional burlesque troupe The Atomic Bombshells, for a one night only performance on Wednesday night May 1st for those 18 and older. We are also hosting a Basics of Burlesque class on Saturday May 4th from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm taught by The Atomic Bombshells.  Tap into your inner diva (or divo) and pick up a few burlesque tricks for the home or stage.  This class is open to all levels, ages and genders.

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE . Parking is plentiful and free. Tickets for Gypsy are priced at $35-$40. Performances are from April 26th through May 19th Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, with one additional show on Thursday, May 16th at 7:30pm.
