April 2 kick-off event for Shoreline Eats4Health Awareness Month

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Are you ready for a change to a healthier way of eating? Looking for inspiration or new ideas as you plan your meals? Need help with healthy meal preparation techniques? During the entire month of April the City and many community partners will celebrate the second annual Eats4Health month by highlighting learning opportunities, specials on nutritious foods at local stores, and lifestyle changes that can help residents lead a healthy life.

In Shoreline's Vision 2029 Statement, a 20-year community vision, Shoreline is described as a "healthy community." To further this vision, Council adopted a Healthy City Strategy that supports and encourages community members to make healthy lifestyle choices. A primary component in healthy lifestyles is nutritious food. Access to sources of healthy food and knowing how to prepare healthy meals provides the foundation for nutritious diets and lowers the risk of obesity and diabetes.

To kick off Eats4Health month, please join the City and partner organizations at a Healthy Eating Event on Tuesday, April 2, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at City Hall. Cynthia Lair, Assistant Professor and Culinary Curriculum Director at Bastyr University and author of Feeding the Whole Family and Feeding the Young Athlete: Sports Nutrition Made Easy for Players, Parents and Coaches, will provide a keynote address.

Her topic will be on “mindful cooking.” In today’s rush to get everything in, we tend to be thinking about other things when shopping for food or cooking our meals, and we pay a price for that. Lair will explain how being present when we shop for food and cook will improve our well-being and improve our food! In addition to being an author and professor, Lair also hosts an online cooking show called Cookus Interruptus (cookus.tv) She has produced over 170 videos showing you how to cook fresh, local, organic whole foods despite life’s interruptions.

Before and after Lair’s presentation, residents can sample food, pick up new recipes and get information on making healthy food and lifestyle choices at a vendor fair of local companies and organizations. Partner organizations include: Central Market, Richmond Beach QFC, Haggen Northwest Fresh, Shoreline Farmer’s Market, Dale Turner Family Y, Shoreline Lake-Forest Park Senior Center, Shoreline School District Food Services, Diggin' Shoreline, Picture Health Nutrition Solution and King County Library System.

Visit the Shoreline website to learn more. For questions about the City of Shoreline’s Healthy City Strategy contact Community Services Manager Rob Beem 206-801-2251.

Second graders find creative solutions to business problems

Corrected 03-27-2013 10:42p Teacher's name is O'Connell

Highland Terrace second graders in Jeanine O'Connell's class learn about the community outside of their home and school. The idea is developed as a story with characters, a setting, and a problem to solve.

The children distinguish between businesses that provide services and those that provide goods.

“I partnered the children and they selected which business they wanted to create," says O'Connell.

Together they created a diorama of the store by making things and bringing things from home.  Then the children make a doll that represents them as workers.  All are placed on a bulletin board that is made to look like a street.

“I stapled those onto the street and the children add details like trees, cars, mailboxes, etc.  One day they come in and I have placed brown paper to look like dug up dirt, caution signs, road work signs, etc..  The children discover that it is difficult for anyone to go to their businesses. “

They must come up with a solution to the problem.  The children decide that advertising and offering special deals will help lure people into their businesses.  So they make billboards.  They decide on a logo and a jingle.  To cap off the project, the children use small pieces of paper to draw and write what they are selling and put price tags on them.  They are given money.  Then they go shopping.  One partner sells and the other shops.  Then they switch.  The children are highly engaged in the whole process.

“Their imaginative creations and logical reasoning are a joy to watch.”

Aid car crew rescues elderly man from burning bedroom

On Saturday, March 23, a Shoreline Fire Aid Car crew thought they were responding to a routine medical alert device alarm at the home of an elderly resident in the 100 Block of NW 189th St.

As they approached the front door, they heard the sound of a smoke alarm. As the two person crew made entry, they discovered large amounts of smoke filling the home -- coming from a bedroom.  They called for additional resources and upgraded the call to a house fire.

The two firefighters then entered the smoke-filled bedroom, discovered an elderly male apparently unable to move on his own, and pulled him from the house. They used an extinguisher to control the fire on the floor of the bedroom, vented the home, and turned their patient over to medics.

Arriving engine crews cleared smoke and debris from the home and salvaged what they could of the homeowner's belongings.

Fire investigators say the cause of the blaze was related to unsafely discarded smoking materials.  The man was treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital within a few hours.

"This aid car crew carried out a swift and heroic effort to save this man's life", said Mark Bunje, Fire Chief. "The elderly resident would have survived only a few more minutes in the smoke-filled environment they encountered." The patient has been referred to Shoreline Fire's Community Services Officer for follow-up.

Shoreline Fire reminds residents that accidental fires due to smoking are common and can be deadly for elderly and disabled residents unable to escape on their own. If you have concerns about an elderly relative who may not be safe at home, contact Shoreline Fire Department's CSO at 206-533-6500.

SummerSet Arts Festival seeking volunteers

Flying Ponies
Artists Ann Blanch, Lynn Ahnen Turnblom and Sue Williams

On a fall Saturday afternoon last year, hundreds of people poured into Ronald Bog Park on N 175th St. Festival attendees were delighted by the sight of a colorful giant floating turtle clambering off a dock, amazed by fluttering iridescent wings affixed to the Shoreline Ponies sculpture, and charmed by the brightly striped tree socks made by local knitters. There was music to enjoy, dancing to experience, a labyrinth walk, art making demonstrations, historical talks, and culture sharing by the Duwamish Tribe.

SummerSet Arts Festival: Celebrating Ronald Bog 2013 is looking for enthusiastic Shoreline residents to help plan and produce our second annual festival. It will be held at Ronald Bog Park on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

You do not have to be an artist but you do need to reside in Shoreline and be someone who would enjoy volunteering as part of a team creating an afternoon event of art, music, and nature exploration for people of ages. No prior experience necessary! If you would like to participate, contact Cynthia Knox or Kathy Plant.

46th District Legislators issue Statement on the Fatal Accident in North Seattle

State Sen. David Frockt, State Rep. Gerry Pollet and State Rep. Jessyn Farrell have issued a statement in response to yesterday’s accident in North Seattle

The three 46th District Democrats represent Lake Forest Park and Kenmore in addition to the northeast corner of Seattle.

Here is their statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of yesterday’s tragic accident just east of Eckstein Middle Schools at 33rd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 75th, where two people were killed and two remain in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.

“Law enforcement officials will conduct a thorough investigation, but preliminary reports indicate that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the incident. Driving while intoxicated is always unacceptable even when no one is hurt. The potential for injury or death is too great a burden for our community to bear.

“There will be a time to reevaluate traffic safety laws in our state, but new legislation will not comfort grieving families. We ask that you join us in offering whatever support and help we can provide to those whose lives will be forever changed by this devastating incident, and to be conscious as drivers on our neighborhood streets.”

Premier a cappella vocal band at Northshore Performing Arts Center

Northwest vocal band The Coats
at the Northshore Performing Arts Center

The Coats - Four Part Vocal Harmony - April 13 at 7:30 pm

The Coats vocal band started on the street corners of Seattle's famous Pike Place Market. This premiere a cappella band will perform the exciting harmonies that swept them from the street corners and onto the stage at Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. NE, Bothell) on Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Singing for tourists, locals, fish vendors, and fellow buskers, their humble ambitions of earning a few clams to fight off the tuition bills quickly evolved into a full-time international performance career. They've since won national vocal competitions, sung for the President of the United States, and have been fortunate enough to share the stage with such talented fellow entertainers as Ronnie Milsap, Trisha Yearwood, Montgomery Gentry, The Beach Boys, Tanya Tucker, Billy Dean, Crystal Gayle, and Colin Ray, just to name a few, all while continuing their tradition of outreach performances and workshops supporting music in schools throughout the northwest.

Tickets are priced at $29 for Adults, $25 for Seniors, and $15 for Youth under 17.
Tickets: 425-984-2471

Studded tire deadline approaches as spring arrives

Spring has arrived. As temperatures rise across the region, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reminds drivers to remove their studded tires by midnight, March 31.

Studded tires are legal in Washington from Nov. 1 to March 31, unless WSDOT grants an extension. Multiple forecasts indicate temperatures will be well above 50 degrees in many parts of the state and WSDOT is not planning on extending the deadline. This year, Oregon and Washington are coordinating studded-tire removal dates to make travel rules consistent.

“Our forecasters expect mild temperatures with little chance for snow or ice across much of Washington’s lowlands,” said Chris Christopher, WSDOT Maintenance Operations director. “Drivers are encouraged to remove studded tires as soon as possible because tire stores will be busy leading up to April 1.”

Drivers traveling to higher elevations should always prepare for winter driving conditions. This means having information on weather and roadway conditions, traction tires and chains.

“Drivers still need to check roadway conditions before traveling across the passes,” said Christopher. “Expect to see snow in the mountains well into May.”

Under state law, driving with studded tires after Mar. 31 is a traffic infraction and could result in police writing you a $124 ticket.

Letter to the Editor: Don’t Balance the Budget on the Backs of Poor Children

To the Editor:

Head Start and Early Head Start programs are facing devastating budget cuts that will slam shut the window of opportunity for nearly 70,000 at-risk children. By failing to avert the budget sequester, our elected officials have missed the opportunity to lead by example and place the most vulnerable among us on a pathway to lifelong success.

As the Executive Director of the Center for Human Services, I can tell you that these cuts will be particularly catastrophic to the poor children and families we serve. For nearly fifty years Head Start has been getting results in preparing our neediest children for school, and leading the early childhood field in innovation and quality through both high standards and relentless insistence on excellence.

Head Start and other non-defense discretionary programs — at 3.4% of the budget — are not the cause of our growing debt. Congress needs to act quickly to restore fiscal stability and maintain funding for at-risk children. Our nation’s budget simply can not be balanced on the backs of poor children.

Shorecrest and Shorewood baseball and softball teams join together to strike out cancer

This year Shorecrest baseball and softball teams will be taking on cross-town rivals, Shorewood in the second annual "Blue Day/Pink Night" to knock cancer out of the park. All proceeds from ribbon sales, drawings, cupcake sales, along with donations received by players will, for the second year, be donated to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

"We are excited about the chance to play for a cause," said Jackie Berg, Shorecrest softball coach.  "This cause is near and dear to our teams' hearts as cancer in its numerous forms has affected players on all teams. Shorecrest and Shorewood coaches and players are excited to raise money to find a cure."

SCCA unites the physicians and scientists from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children's in a world-class treatment center that provides advanced diagnostic approaches, treatments and clinical studies for cancers and related diseases.  Patients who come to SCCA receive the latest research-based therapies under the excellent, patient-focused care of our caregivers and staff.  SCCA also offers a number of programs and resources that support patient and family needs.

“We would like to thank the participants of “Blue Day/Pink Night” at the Shorewood/Shorecrest softball and baseball games for, once again, choosing Seattle Cancer Care Alliance as its beneficiary,” said Ericka Sisolak, Annual Giving and Stewardship Officer at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. “Community events like these help SCCA to support patients and families through the difficult journey through cancer treatment.”

Amanda Eshelman, a senior at Shorecrest High School on the varsity softball team, is putting on this event as her senior project. "Blue Day/Pink Night" is an event based around the baseball and softball games of Shorecrest and Shorewood. The event is open to the public and will be held at Merdian Park Fields located at 1900 N 170th Street Shoreline, WA.
