Five additional Shorewood students have qualified for the international DECA conference in April after competing at the state level earlier this month.

Students from Shorecrest and Shorewood will spend spring break in Anaheim competing against 15,000 other marketing students from around the world at the international competition.

The Shorewood students are:

Stephanie Chan and Joe Abbott, 1st place: Public Relations Project
Joe and Stephanie chose to do a campaign aimed at bringing awareness about women's rights and female genital mutilation.
“It was quite a sensitive subject, but they did an amazing job and approached it in a very mature manner,” said their teacher, Damon Oliveto.

They had several components to their campaign — taking out ads in the school paper, doing presentations at lunches to social studies classes, and setting up an information booth at the Seattle Art Museum's Teen Night Out.
“It was a well executed project,” Oliveto said. “They estimate that they reached approximately 6,000 high school students from around Western Washington.

Annika Stenfjord, 1st place: Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan for the 5th Avenue Theatre
David Fan, 5th place: Quick Service Restaurant Marketing
Carrie Jensen, 6th place: Financial Operations Research Event

The School-Based Enterprise (SBE) "Scot Shoppe" at Shorecrest was among 166 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re-certification) this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference.

The students who worked on the certification were Crisleen Malabanan, Sage Kay and Keegan DeVitis with the assistance of their advisors Amy Delich and Emily Wray. The school-based enterprise at Shorecrest High School has operated for more than 20 years.

At Shorewood, Stephanie Chan, Eric Berquist, and Hanna Al-zeer qualified for the DECA International Competition for the student store. These three students wrote a 40-page operations manual focusing on promotion tactics, inventory controls, and management practices. They will give a presentation on the Shorewood store operations in Anaheim.

According to Wikipedia, "DECA, (also known as Collegiate DECA on the college level) is an international association of students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe."

The Grafstein family of Shoreline are contestants
in PSE's Re-energized by Design competition

Re-Energized by Design premiers today as web episodes (webisodes). Tune in to watch the Grafstein Family from Shoreline as they compete head-to-head with five other families to achieve the home makeover that best combines great design and energy efficiency.

Meet the Contestants
The premier episode, Meet the Contestants, introduces the six colorful families who will battle it out for the $5,000 grand prize.

From the Bedford family, who bought their house from hoarders, to the Sayers, who built their own house from the ground up, one thing is clear: there is no obvious front runner! It could be the environmentally-minded Mendes family, the White family with three generations under one roof, the Reilly family with their comfortable, laid-back home, or the Grafstein family in their brand new house.

More on the Series
Each Wednesday from March 20-April 24, Puget Sound Energy will release the next episode of Re-Energized by Design here. Viewers will follow the contestants' race to combine bold design choices and energy-efficient ideas, transforming each room into a stunning, functional and efficient space on a tight budget. To advance, contestants must impress celebrity judges — radio personality Marty Reimer, 425 and South Sound Magazine Editor Lisa Patterson, and local society and event photographer Duell Fisher.

Retired Premera CEO joins Music4Life board

Betty Woods joins the Board
of Music4Life

Betty Woods, the former President/CEO of Premera Blue Cross, has joined the corporate governing board of Music4Life™, the non-profit organization that acquires musical instruments for use by students from low income families in the Seattle, Highline and Shoreline school systems.

“Betty also is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Seattle University,” says David Endicott, President of Music4Life, “so we feel especially fortunate to have her join our efforts for the education of young musicians in local public schools.”

When Woods retired in 2000 from Premera Blue Cross, it had become under her leadership a $1.9 billion health care company serving more than a million people in Washington, Oregon and Alaska.  It was formed by the merger of Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska (Blue Cross), Medical Service Corporation of eastern Washington (Blue Shield) and LifeWise of Oregon (a health and life insurance company).

“We particularly value her as a strategist,” Endicott says of Woods.  “In this economy, low income families are everywhere. The goal of Music4Life is to help these families get over the very first barrier they encounter, the acquisition of the musical instrument itself.  Many families can’t even afford to rent one.” If the candidates for our help are everywhere, that’s where we want to go, he says.

Research now shows that kids who study instrumental music do better in math, science, history, literature, languages (both foreign languages and English) and in other scholastic disciplines. Kids who come from families that can’t even afford to rent a musical instrument are in danger of not getting a full, basic education. “So, in a very real sense, Music4Life is more than just a ‘music program.’ It’s an ‘education program,’” Endicott says.

Music4Life acquires used musical instruments from adults who no longer use them, gets them fully repaired and donates them free-of-charge for use primarily by students from low income families.   The Shoreline program is supported by the Rotary Club of Shoreline and Shoreline Breakfast Rotary.  Music4Life operates programs in the Seattle, Highline and Shoreline school districts.

Music4Life is a community service activity that is Rotary-inspired, but you don’t have to be a member of a Rotary club to support it, Endicott says. “We’re very glad to have the support of anyone who understands the immense, life-long  value of instrumental music in a child’s life.”

For more information or to donate an instrument to Music4Life, contact David Endicott or call 206-409-3275 or go to the website. Instrument donation forms are available online, as well as at other designated instrument drop-off locations.

Shorewood’s first league soccer game brings first loss

Corrected 03-24-2013 1:43am

The weather for the Shorewood boys’ soccer game at Glacier Peak Tuesday night was cold, rainy and miserable.

Unfortunately for Shorewood that was how the game went as well.

The game opened Western Conference 3A play for both teams and dropped Shorewood’s overall record to 1-1 after Glacier Peak won 2-0.

Glacier Peak controlled the ball for much of the first half and outshot Shorewood 5-2. The Grizzlies netted their first goal at the 32nd minute.

The half ended 1-0 for Peak.

The second half had Shorewood settling down and starting to even out the game, but the Thunderbirds were unable to finish. At the 60th minute Glacier Peak scored its second goal, one that started with a free kick that Shorewood blocked with Glacier Peak scoring on the rebound for the 2-0 lead that ended the game

Calvin Crawford was in goal for Shorewood.

Glacier Peak is 1-0 in league play and 1-2 overall. Shorewood is 0-1 in league and 1-1 overall.

Shorewood was scheduled to have played three games by now, but a non-league home game against Kennedy Catholic that was rescheduled from Saturday to Wednesday, has been postponed again without being rescheduled.

The Thunderbirds play a home non-league game against Bothell Friday before returning to Wesco 3A play with another home game against Mountlake Terrace Tuesday, March 26.

The T-birds and Bothell meet at 7:30pm Friday at Shoreline Stadium, with junior varsity teams from the two schools playing at 5:30pm.

The Shorewood junior varsity has a 1-1 record (1-0 Wesco 3A) after a 1-0 victory over Glacier Peak Tuesday.

Shoreline City Council Meeting March 18, 2013

Notes from Shoreline City Council Meeting March 18, 2013
By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

The City Council considered and passed several amendments presented by Councilmembers Will Hall and Chris Roberts to Ordinance 654  which amended the City’s Development Code for Commercial Design and Zone Consolidation.

In 2011 the City Council adopted the Town Center Development Code as the latest approach to commercial standards. Then the Planning Commission held public hearings and made recommendations to consolidate and streamline redundant commercial zones. The Council members emphasized that they value comments and concerns from the public and encouraged people to keep abreast of Planning Commission Meetings. The Council praised all the work done by staff to get the code document into presentable shape fro revision.

In other business Urban Tree Consultant Elizabeth Walker said there were some issues with Shoreline’s Urban Tree inventory done as part of becoming a First Tree City USA.

The Tree Inventory has not been updated for ten years. Walker said, “Ten years is a long time for trees to grow. It’s important to get an updated inventory.” There are some critical areas where roots have pushed up underneath sidewalks and created heaving making them a possible danger to pedestrians. She suggested concentrating the updated inventory around major arterials. Staff resources are very limited. In 2009, the Urban Tree Canopy Report showed around 30% (“ quite commendable”) citywide canopy whereas optimal is 40% to start maximizing on the ecosystem benefits.” Walker’s recommended action is to put together a strategic plan. The city has gotten two grants from Washington Department of Natural Resources: one to help with tree inventory and the other a community assistant grant to help with training five new tree board members since five are leaving. Director of Parks Recreation and Cultural Services Director Dick Deal said, “We were the only city in the state to get both of those grants”.

Director Deal said that during April through June his department will review the Shoreline pool which is aging. It’s a wonderful resource, but needs help. Also Sunset School’s (now designated park) Phase 1 Improvements must be approved. And new Public Arts Committee Members must be appointed.

In July through April a review of the new Alcohol in Parks Policy will be evaluated.

Metro revises schedule for RapidRide E and F lines

Metro RapidRide bus service in Shoreline has been delayed

King County Metro Transit has revised the scheduled launch dates for the RapidRide E and F lines, allowing time to complete needed construction on facility upgrades and features that will make future service more reliable. E is the line that will run through Shoreline.

Before launching service, construction is needed on over 100 bus stops and stations and upgraded transit signals at more than 60 intersections – which stretch across two corridors, 21 miles and six cities.

Metro reviewed and revised the construction timelines with cities to reflect the complexity of the work needed to launch service on these two lines, said Kevin Desmond, Metro Transit general manager.

“Our customers will agree that it’s better for us to reschedule the launch of service until everything is complete and the technology is tested and working,” Desmond said. Rider amenities needed before launching the service include next bus arrival signs and ORCA card readers at stations, as well as coordinated traffic signals for buses.

“We learned clear lessons after the rocky launch for the C and D lines last year and are taking these steps so things go smoother for our customers with these lines,” Desmond said.

Both RapidRide E and F lines previously were scheduled to launch September 2013. Under the new schedule, RapidRide E will begin service in February 2014, replacing the existing Route 358 which carries nearly 12,000 weekday riders between Shoreline and downtown Seattle. RapidRide F now is slated to launch in June 2014, replacing Route 140 between Burien, Sea Tac, Tukwila and Renton. Route 140 carries about 3,500 weekday riders.

By revising the launch schedule, RapidRide service will better be able to provide the speed and reliability riders expect. The F Line is planned to travel on corridors where a handful of major street and regional transit projects are under way. Those projects are scheduled to wrap up in spring 2014. Waiting to launch RapidRide F Line until after that work is complete avoids reroutes that would have added time and delay to service.  The E Line will face similar challenges with construction in Shoreline and Seattle along the Aurora Avenue corridor. However, that construction, while it will create some delays, will not result in alternate routing.

The E and F lines are the last of Metro’s six planned RapidRide routes. The current budget for the full RapidRide program is $194 million, including $121 million in federal, state and local grants – of which $12.4 million go to jurisdictions for supporting improvements.

Metro’s red and yellow RapidRide buses are scheduled at least every 10 minutes during commute times and provide all-day service. Buses have low floors and three doors to speed boarding and exiting, with off-board ORCA payment at many locations. Together, the four existing RapidRide lines carry about 28,500 weekday riders, a figure expected to continue to grow.

Photo: Burlington Northern train and the USS Ronald Reagan race to the north along Richmond Beach

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

A Burlington Northern train catches up with the USS Ronald Reagan
as they both head north out of Richmond Beach

Marc Weinberg comments:
A friend called to tell me the USS Ronald Reagan was leaving Puget Sound this morning and I rushed down to the Richmond Beach shoreline to find a good viewing spot as she came along. I selected a vantage point at the Richmond Beach Kayu Kayu Ac Park which would be clear of trees.
I had taken a few practice shots when I heard a northbound train approaching. I knew instantly that my view of the ship would be blocked and I wondered if I could be lucky enough to capture both the train and the ship. I only had one chance and one click of the shutter and the ship would be gone. This photo (above) is the result.

According to the Kitsap Sun,

The USS Ronald Reagan departed Monday morning (from the Bremerton shipyards) for its San Diego home after 14 months of work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

The Reagan crew, shipyard workers and contractors completed what the Navy calls a Docked Planned Incremental Availability — $218 million in maintenance and upgraded systems, much of it performed in dry dock. Projects ranged from preserving the ship’s exterior and island, complete overhaul of its internal computer network, and work on the main engines and rudders,

The Sun reports that the future of the Reagan is not clear.

Reagan is headed back to Naval Base Coronado, but its future isn’t clear. It will rejoin the West Coast deployment cycle, which includes the Middle East and western Pacific Ocean. The ship isn’t scheduled to deploy for some time, said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens of Naval Air Forces Pacific, and budget problems jeopardize its time on the water.

Students to make history come alive at Shoreline Center March 20

A history day exhibit

Students from 20 public and private schools in north and east King County will present their original research on Wednesday, March 20, during the North Puget Sound Regional History Day contest at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155,

The culmination of a year-long program in which students choose and research a topic, learning historical research principles and strategies, North Puget Sound Regional History Day is part of a national effort to enhance history education and prepare students to become informed and involved citizens.

At the Shoreline regional event, nearly 500 students in grades 6 to 12 will take part by conducting research and presenting their results in one of five categories: exhibits, papers, multi-media documentaries, original performances and websites. They work as individuals or in groups of up to five members. Students are participating from the Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Northshore, and Seattle school districts. Private schools participating include Lakeside Upper School, Lake Washington Girls Middle School, and Seattle Prep.

More than 2,000 students will take part in seven regional contests held around the state, competing in the junior (grades 6-8) or senior divisions (grades 9-12). They hope to qualify for the state competition at Bellevue College on Saturday, May 4. The top two finishers in each category at state will compete in the national contest in June at the University of Maryland, College Park.

"The regional contest gives students a chance to get some good feedback on their projects," said North Puget Sound History Day Regional Coordinator Randy Schnabel, a retired Shorewood High School history teacher. "It's not unusual to see projects that are college-level or better. Students put their heart, soul and brain into their research, and it shows."

This year's contest theme is "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events." Students have applied the theme creatively, according to Schnabel. "History Day students have done extensive research on a wide variety of topics, and the results are impressive."

Preliminary round judging begins at 9am on March 20, and final round judging commences at 1pm. As part of the judging, students are interviewed about their project, and must provide a complete bibliography and a paper describing their research process.

The public is invited to view papers and Web sites beginning at 8:30  a.m., the documentaries and performances at 9am and the exhibits beginning at 11:45am. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 3:15pm in the Shoreline Center Auditorium. The Center is located at 18560 1st Ave NE in Shoreline.

How healthy is Echo Lake? ELNA meeting Tuesday

Echo Lake

Attendees at the Tuesday, March 19 meeting, 7-9pm at Shoreline City Hall 17500 Midvale Ave N, of the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) will find out the answer to the question: how healthy is Echo Lake?

Jennifer Adams, Surface Water Quality Specialist for the City of Shoreline and Brian Landau, the City's Surface Water and Environmental Services Manager will address the group.

Echo Lake is fed by surface runoff from a drainage basic encompassing approximately 215 acres between N 183rd Street and N 200th Street. The basin is currently 56 percent impervious hardscape and includes Aurora Avenue, as well as runoff from the surrounding residential neighborhoods.

Everything that is deposited in our yards, roads, drains, and open spaces is carried into the lake by rain water, including fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste, oil antifreeze, rubber and many other hazardous substances.

Barbara Guthrie and Ken Romdall

The ELNA organization has been monitoring the lake since the City and the Neighborhoods were created. For over a decade, ELNA members took water samples from the lake to be tested by King County. When King County said it would begin to charge for testing, ELNA successfully petitioned the City of Shoreline to take over the testing.

The Echo Lake Neighborhood includes those who live or work in the area bounded by I-5 and Aurora, and 205th and 185th, but meetings are open to the general public.

BECU awards grants to three Shoreline Schools

BECU announced last week Echo Lake Elementary, Meridian Park, and Parkwood Elementary are three of the 49 Washington schools awarded grants totaling more than $100,000 statewide. The funding for recipients will go towards a variety of school programs, from green school certification, to outdoor education and technology for literacy and math.

BECU received approximately 84 applications and narrowed it down to 49 based on eligibility of the request, impact on student learning, number of students reached with grant funds, and potential on-going use of the item or program. Grants are awarded in three categories: Financial Literacy, Environmental Sustainability, and Technology Tools.

This year marks the 11th year that BECU has awarded over $100,000 in community grants to support education projects that help promote student excellence.

Echo Lake Elementary – This grant will be used to purchase six iPad minis to provide tools for remediation and extension of learning in language arts, math, and the physical and social sciences.

Meridian Park Elementary – This grant will help fund science field trips/outdoor educational lessons focused specifically on environmental sustainability issues that will enhance students’ awareness of the natural world around them.

Parkwood Elementary - Parkwood will use this grant to hire an environmental educator to supplement the science curriculum by bringing science and sustainability lessons to life in class, followed by field trips inspiring students to look closer, learn more and be better stewards.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Snow in Summer

Snow in Summer by Jane Yolen
As a young child with hair black as ebony, skin fair as snow and lips red as blood, Summer leads a fairy tale life: her mother is beautiful, her father is the king of the garden, and all is well. But when her mother dies in childbirth, Summer learns about living the middle part of a fairy tale, the part of the story where the wicked stepmother moves in and the young girl runs away to the forest to find safety with a bunch of little men.

Set in Appalachia in the 1930's, Jane Yolen recasts not just the "Sleeping Beauty" story but several other classic Grimm tales as well, with a fresh voice and an intriguing cast. No cussing (the word "witch" is noted as a side-step for another word involving mama dogs) and no sex (although Hunter clearly intends to have his wicked way with Summer before carving out her heart), and only a bit of blood...but there are several very poisonous snakes to watch for.

Recommended for ages 10 to adult.
The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern
