How to catch a bank robber (and keep bank employees safe)

Bank personnel, police, and City employees

Fifteen local bank employees from Shoreline, Kenmore and Lake Forest Park attended an early morning training session presented by the Shoreline Police Department on Thursday, February 14, 2013.

The session was designed to teach bank employees how to stay safe in a robbery situation and how to learn to gather information which would help the police catch the robbers.

Officer Todd Morrell from the SWAT team

Captain Scott Strathy conducted the training, with participants from 9-1-1, patrol, hostage negotiations, SWAT, and Major Crime Investigations.

The bank employees were told to practice making observations about people - learn to remember height, clothing, eye color, posture, gait - anything that would help identify and separate that person from others.

What is happening with the man on the left?
Is he a robber? Can you describe him after he leaves?

At one point during the presentation, a person ran into the room, yelling something about money. The person took "money" from the "bank teller" and ran out. The startled participants were asked to describe the "robber" in writing. Then the "robber" was brought back into the room so they could see how they had done.

The evaluation from the participants was very positive. One bank employee shared that she had been through numerous robberies and appreciated the training and the opportunity to hear from the police.

For the Birds: The Great Blue Heron- Four Feet Tall

Great Blue Heron in flight

By Christine Southwick

Which bird has a six foot wing-span, catches live food without flying, and weighs less than seven pounds?

Huge slow wing beats, long neck pulled back into an aerodynamic  “S”, and long yellow legs trailing behind is the sight of the Great Blue Heron.

Great Blue Heron with fish.

Great Blue Herons prefer shallow bays, estuaries, and wetlands- the wilder, the better. These largest herons of North America are solitary hunters. The males claim the prime hunting spots, with females and juvies mostly relegated to drainage ditches, smaller wetlands, or fields with nearby water.

A hunting Great Blue Heron is a study in patience. Standing at the water’s edge, or in water up to 20 inches deep, this heron will stand statue-like, or move Tai-Chi slow until it sees its next meal. With its neck adapted for lightning speed strikes, it spears or catches its prey—fish, insects, amphibians, frogs, snakes, small mammals, or an unlucky bird. It juggles the food around until it can swallow it whole. GBH’s have been known to choke to death when the prey was too large.

Great Blue Herons usually nest in tall trees in/near mature forests, in marshes or islands, but are very adaptive. I once saw Great Blue Herons nesting on a large cactus overlooking the Sea of Cortez!

Feeding time

Usually they nest in groups from a 100 up to 500 nests. Males bring long sticks to the females who then incorporate them into the nest platform. These colonies are a noisy place, especially when an eagle flies nearby, and most of the adults call the alarm and take wing. The two-to-six nestlings also noisily demand their feedings of regurgitated food from both their parents.

Here in the Puget Sound area these heronries have recently become smaller, more often having 20-50 nests. It is believed that three factors may be contributing to these smaller heronries:
  • Increased population of Bald Eagles, with reduced habitat for Bald Eagle foraging;
  • Reduced habitat wild enough/ remote enough to suit large heronry needs;
  • Increased noise and human disturbance to cause abandonment of larger heronries.

There are several heronries nearby, and if you have a chance, go watch the magnificent Great Blue Herons as they take off, and land in amongst branches. You’ll long remember this sight.  If you do go, talk softly, and leave your dogs at home.

Christine Southwick is a Board member of the Puget Sound Bird Observatory and is their Winter Urban Color-banding Project Manager. She has completed the 40-hour class to become a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat Steward.

Shoreline Men’s basketball wins 5 in a row

The Shoreline Community College Men’s Basketball team is on a roll! They have now won 5 games in a row. And it is just in time with only 3 games left to decide who makes it to the NWAACC Playoffs. The Dolphins won Wednesday night on their home floor 94-84 against Skagit Valley College.

Tonight’s game was truly one of ups and downs. The Dolphins at one time led by as much as 15 but before you knew it the game was within 5 points. Sophomore Center Nashon George was Shoreline’s scoring leader with 23 points and 9 rebounds. Bulla Vienna came away with a double-double off of the bench scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Guard Kadeem Stewart also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists.

For the Skagit Valley Cardinals Riley Newman led the game in scoring with 29 points. Where the Cardinals suffered the most was in their 18 turnovers.  Shoreline was able to convert many of those into fast breaks leading to 17 of their points.

The Dolphins now have a record of 7-14 overall. They are currently tied with Bellevue College for 5th place in the region and only one game behind both Peninsula College and Everett Community College. Needless to say it is a very tight match for the 3rd and 4th Northern Region spot. Shoreline is in the hunting for a spot in the NWAACC Conference Tournament in there next two games.

Shoreline is playing the number one team in the Northern Region, Edmonds Community College, on Saturday February 16th, 2013 in Edmonds, WA at 7:00 PM. The Dolphins need help packing the house in Edmonds to help  get an upset and continue their win streak.

Forget the candy and flowers

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Forget the candy and flowers and expensive greeting cards for Valentine's Day.

Give your loved ones the gifts of your time and help.

Spend some time with them.
Take them out to lunch. Go for a walk.
Dump the trash, wash the dishes, vacuum the floor.

Give them a certificate for 3 hours of your labor, doing whatever they need around the house

Help them run errands
Weed the flower bed
Walk the dog

If you can't do any of those things, then get out the credit card and buy the candy, flowers, and greeting cards. Or maybe a nice plant from Sky Nursery - of course, you have to dig the hole!

Executive Constantine congratulates Councilmember Rod Dembowski

King County Executive Dow Constantine congratulates Councilmember Rod Dembowski on his appointment to represent King County Council District One

“I congratulate Councilmember Rod Dembowski on his appointment as the new representative of King County Council District One.
“I have known Councilmember Dembowski for many years and have admired his work as an activist, an attorney, and a community volunteer. Rod has worked in County government, as an aide to former Executive Gary Locke, has practiced as a lawyer for a dozen years, and also brings a long record of public service to his new role.
“I’d like to thank the members of the 13-member Citizens Advisory Committee that helped me choose an extraordinary group of finalists – Rod, State Rep. Cindy Ryu, and Shoreline City Councilmember Will Hall. I salute the members of the King County Council for their thoughtful consideration of these nominees and I thank them for their decisive and timely action to provide excellent representation to the people of the First Council District.”

State Rep. Cindy Ryu’s statement on Rod Dembowski’s appointment to King County Council

Rep. Cindy Ryu
After the King County Council appointed Seattle attorney Rod Dembowski over Shoreline City Councilman Will Hall and Democratic 32nd District State Rep. Cindy Ryu Monday to fill the vacant seat representing north King County on the Council, Ryu sent the following statement:

“I truly appreciate the representative democracy form of government which we enjoy here in the USA and in King County, especially as a new American who has been a Washingtonian for more than 43 years. I want to thank King County Executive Dow Constantine and County Council Chair Julia Patterson for their open and professional process the past two months as well as the many Council members who made it possible for me to learn more about the issues of concern to the King County Council.
“I congratulate Rod Dembowski on his appointment to finish up the 10 months remaining in Bob Ferguson's Council term.
“Due to the prescriptive method of appointing a replacement for the vacancy created by Bob Ferguson's election as our new attorney general, no one who lives in King County District 1 had a vote in this appointment yesterday. Rather, on November 5, 2013, voters of King County Council District 1 will have a voice in choosing who their King County Council member will be. The voters will be free to choose who will represent them on the King County Council.
"I truly appreciate all your support and encouraging words as I look forward to winning the votes of District 1 residents on November 5. Let's keep in touch in the coming months.”

City of Lake Forest Park Receives Clean Audit and Qualifies for Two-Year Audit Cycle

The City of Lake Forest Park received notice from the State Auditor’s Office on February 11, 2013 that it had received a clean audit of 2011 finances and accountability processes. This was good news for the City, which was issued a finding related to cash receipting procedures in its 2010 audit.

The audit examined the City’s financial condition, cash receipting, credit card use and procedures, travel and reimbursement policies and procedures, state grants, and fuel use for the period of calendar year 2011.

The State Auditor’s Office is an independent agency of State Government charged with promoting accountability, fiscal integrity and openness in state and local government, and strives to ensure the effective use of public resources. Audit procedures were performed to determine whether the City complied with state laws and regulations and its own policies and procedures. The Auditor’s office issued an unqualified opinion regarding the 2011 financial statements, which means the City’s finances were presented fairly, in all material respects.

As a result of the clean audit of 2011 finances and for addressing all issues identified in the 2010 audit, the Auditor’s office also notified the City that it had qualified for a two-year audit cycle, with a corresponding reduction in cost. The City had been on a two-year audit cycle until receiving the audit finding in the 2010 audit.

The next scheduled audit in 2014 will focus on the City’s financial statements and accountability for use of public resources for years 2012 and 2013.

Shoreline women’s basketball falls to a top region opponent

After a tough fight through the entire game the Shoreline Community College Women’s Basketball team could not finish on top against the Skagit Valley Cardinals.

After a close first half the Dolphins ending 38-29  to Skagit Valley and a total of 6 lead changes, the Dolphins could not hang on. The final score on the night was 82-55 leaving Shoreline with a record of 10-12 on the season.

Shoreline came away with some great rebounding with 49 total, 24 on the offensive end. This great rebounding once again led many second chance points. Maile Keanu led the team in rebounding pulling down 7 boards and having 15 points. Caitlin Rousopolos also had a good night with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The Cardinal’s were great from behind the arch leading to 27 of their points. The Skagit Valley bench also stepped up to account for 48 of their 82 points.

Shoreline moves into the final stretch of the NWAACC regular season with only 3 games left. The Dolphins will play Edmonds Community College in Edmonds, WA this Saturday, February 16th, 2013 at 5:00 PM. Shoreline defeated Edmonds earlier in the season 59-56 so we are looking forward to another great game.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Shoreline’s Sophomore Night at their last home game of the season on February 20, 2013 against Peninsula College. This will be the last game in SCC Gym for Sophomores Anita Huang, Deja Davis, Caitlin Roussopolos and Wendy Wang.
