Water main construction to begin in Ridgecrest

Friday, January 11, 2013

Development Services of America (DSA) and Shoreline Water District are jointly undertaking the first of two projects to improve the water system in the Ridgecrest neighborhood.

The first project will be occurring along NE 160th Street between 8th and 10th Avenue NE. This project will beginning the third week of January and take approximately three weeks. During this time, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction during daylight hours. You can expect to see some construction signs and/or a metal plate in the roadway. We would ask you to slow down in the construction zone and be considerate of the contractor’s safety.

The second project will occur along 155th Street between 5th and 9th Avenue NE, beginning in early February with construction also taking approximately 3 weeks. The construction will be limited at this location to between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

If you have any further questions/comments about this project, please contact Denny Clouse at Shoreline Water District, 206.362.8100.

Shorewood wrestling edges Mountlake Terrace

By Asst Coach Clark Norton

Shorewood pulled out a close victory at Mountlake Terrace in a dual meet that came down to the match of the night. It was a back and forth affair with neither team able to build a lead of over six points team points.

With two matches to go Kevin Massey of Mountlake Terrace overcame a 14-4 deficit by catching Thunderbird Dawda Dibba in a scramble and pinning him with only 5 seconds left to tie the team score at 36 – 36.  In the final match Shorewood sent out sophomore Braden Kalloway against the Hawks Sean Poole. With the  crowd on their feet and screaming Kalloway came out aggressive from the first moment.  He never let his opponent rest as he imposed his will to record his 15th pin of the season to seal the Thunderbird victory.

WeatherWatcher: Cold weather ahead, but mostly dry

Through the weekend we are going to have much colder weather than we are used to in our area. There is a mild outflow of air from the Frasier River Canyon that will remain constant through Sunday keeping the air conditioning on for us through the weekend.  We will have clear nights and mostly sunny skies with the exception of Saturday.

Temperatures are going to be in the low to mid 20's at night, with highs barely breaking the mid 30's for the day.  As a result any moisture from the snow or rain showers we've had will be freezing to roads, especially side roads in the shade for the next several days causing a significant traffic hazard, especially Friday morning.

Saturday there is a disturbance moving by us off shore, right now models are favoring that the system will remain offshore, but the possibility of a few snow flurries or snow showers still exists. We have a slight threat of a snow event Saturday but as of right now, it does not seem to be a big threat.  If conditions change I will be posting updates.

Stay safe, and remember sidewalks and roadways especially in shaded areas will be icy.

Lori Henry: Hero in the Classroom

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

Physical Education instructor Lori Henry was celebrated as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Nov. 2, 2012 during an assembly at Kellogg Middle School—and recognized at CenturyLink Field on Nov. 11, 2012, when the Seahawks played the New York Jets.

“Lori Henry has been a teacher at Kellogg Middle School for over 15 years — remaining in the community in which she grew up to serve its kids and families — and she is a star in every sense. As a P.E. teacher, Ms. Henry inspires and motivates her students to do their best by teaching them how to face their fears, set goals and reach new heights,” said Lisa Scott, principal at Kellogg Middle School. “In Ms. Henry’s class, kids know they will have fun and be treated with respect, and that she expects them to be model citizens.”

Scott was one of several individuals, including a colleague and former Symetra Heroes in the Classroom recipient, parent and several students, who nominated Henry for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.

“We know that our students do better in school when they are engaged in meaningful activities after school and when they have positive adult role models in their life. Ms. Henry makes sure they have both, and our middle school is a vibrant community as a result.”

Frank Workman on sports: Learning lessons the hard way

By Frank Workman

An educator friend once observed that High School sports represent the non-traditional classroom. Unlike an English or math class, where students learn their lessons during the week and then take the test on Friday; athletes take the test on Friday (play their game), then learn the lesson afterwards.

It has just come to light this weekend that close to a dozen young athletes at Everett HS have learned one of life’s harshest lessons, as a result of attending a party over the Christmas holidays in which activity unbecoming of minors (involving alcohol and/or drugs) was being engaged in. This represents a violation of the Athletic Code of Conduct many HS athletes agree to as a condition of participation in the sport.

As a result, these students’ basketball seasons, which are just now at the halfway point, are over.

They have all been suspended from playing.

Their teams, candidates to make Districts, if not State, have seen their dreams dashed.

Their replacements will undoubtedly play their hearts out, especially those given their first real taste of varsity playing time. Most of them have dreamed of the day when they could wear the colors and represent their school. You never replace a hero with a zero.

Still, all those involved with the boys and girls basketball teams at Everett will be left to wonder ‘what might have been’. Probably for the rest of their lives.

Coaches all around Puget Sound will take this opportunity to remind their players of the Code, and to plead with them to not do anything off the court that would jeopardize the team’s chances.

Perhaps parents will be reminded to keep a more watchful eye on their kids. Some might take turns offering their homes for post-game gatherings, even springing for the pizza and pop the kids can enjoy, under proper adult supervision.

Ronald Reagan’s advice on dealing with the Rooskies (when it came time to mutually disarm) seemed sound at the time, and probably can be applied to parents dealing with teenagers: ‘Trust but verify’.

Another old bromide comes to mind: ‘Never invite trouble, it always accepts’.

While it’s likely the Everett kids weren’t the only ones who violated the Code recently, they are the latest ones to be made an example of and to suffer the consequences of their actions.

Whether their lesson will be learned by others, or ignored, will depend as much on the teachers as it will the students.

Book Review by Aarene Storms: Polly and the Pirates

Polly and the Pirates by Ted Naifeh

Polly Pringle, raised up properly and never dreaming of adventures like the other pupils at her proper boarding school is very surprised to discover that she has been kidnapped by pirates.

The reason behind the kidnapping is just as silly and delightful as the resulting swashbuckling that fills this teen graphic novel. Every piratical convention a reader could want is here: walking the plank, hidden treasure maps, backstabbing crew members, colorful nautical language, and a dashingly romantic rival pirate captain, plus a gutsy girl with surprisingly mad pirate skillz.

Hoist the sails and prepare yourself for a rippin' pirate adventure tale.

Rating
No sex, drugs, or (real) cussing. Some cartoon violence, not bloody. Highly recommended for readers ages 10 to adult. A second Polly and the Pirates book was published in January 2012, and I can hardly wait to read it!

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Meridian Park locked down during bank robbery at Chase

Meridian Park Elementary

Following a bank robbery on Tuesday afternoon at 182nd and Midvale (see previous story), Shoreline police put the Meridian Park campus (including Cascade K-8) into lockdown at about 3:50pm and subsequently put the Children's Center next door into lockdown. Meridian Park Elementary is located at the corner of NE 175th and Meridian Ave N. The Children's Center is just south, on Meridian.

The lockdown lasted until about 4:30pm when Shoreline Police gave the all clear.

Per standard practice, the school district posted notification of the lockdown on the front page of their website and that information was automatically copied to the individual school sites.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, Meridian Park Principal Amy Jessee sent out this letter to families at Meridian Park.

Dear Meridian Park families:
As you all know, our first priority is the safety of our students, staff and community members. We want to inform you of a situation that happened yesterday. At approximately 3:45 p.m., the Shoreline police notified us that they were in pursuit of a bank robbery suspect in the neighborhood of our school. The Shoreline police advised us to go into a lockdown.  We followed their lead and enacted a lockdown at 3:50pm.
A lockdown is defined as a situation where students are kept supervised within their classrooms or in the interior of the building until the emergency no longer exists. This means that no one is allowed to enter or leave the building during the lockdown time period. The lockdown lasted approximately 45 minutes, at which time the police notified us that the suspect had been apprehended. The lockdown was then lifted.
Please know that the students, staff and community members did a great job during this incident.  Our principal designees were on-site for this incident and led the adults on site through every step of the school district lockdown procedure.  I want to thank them for their leadership.  Again, as you know, the safety of our students is paramount at all times. Thank you for your continued support and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding yesterday’s situation.
Sincerely,
Amy Jessee
Principal

Constantine expects to name nominees for Council vacancy early next week

By Evan Smith

King County Executive Dow Constantine expects to announce his three nominees for the soon-to-be-vacant seat on the County Council early next week.

A spokesman for Constantine said Tuesday that Constantine expects to name the nominees before incumbent Councilman Bob Ferguson is inaugurated as state attorney general Jan. 16.

The eight remaining Council members will have 60 days to appoint a replacement for Ferguson.

If a majority of the Council can’t reach agreement within the 60-day period, Governor-elect Jay Inslee will make the appointment from Constantine’s three nominees.

Constantine will name his three nominees from the five candidates approved by a citizens’ committee. The five candidates are Seattle attorney Rod Dembowski, Democratic 32nd District State Rep. Cindy Ryu, Shoreline City Councilman Will Hall, Shoreline Planning Commission member Keith Scully and King County deputy ombudsman Chuck Sloane.

New exhibits at Gallery at Town Center

The Gallery at Town Center presents:

Don Haggerty - Painting
Judith Heim - Collage
January 8 – February 23, 2013

The Gallery at Town Center features rich collages by Judith Heim and fun figurative paintings by Don Haggerty this month. Brighten up the darkening days by stepping in to see the work by these talented artists. The Gallery is located on the inside lower level of the Lake Forest Park Town Center, 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155. Hours are 12-5pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Don Haggerty
Don Haggerty is a figurative painter and sculptor, working from subjects he feels passionate about. The passion may be sparked by a single compositional element, or perhaps a gesture, or the dancing line of a twisted torso. He thinks of such inspirations as “gifts”. Each is a magical spark that ignites an entire work. With all its subtleties of gesture, variations of expression, drapery, light, shadow and mood, he has always felt figurative work to be the perfect context for inviting magic to happen.

Judith Heim

Spontaneity is very important to Judith Heim visually. Most of her paintings are not premeditated. They start out as amorphous shapes of wet color. As she sees subject matter emerge, she delineates it. Most of her imagery is influenced by the unseen world, dream imagery, and natural forms. She likes to create visual metaphors and sees it as a celebration of the journey.

The Gallery also features an array of handmade work by over 80 local artists. Information on the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations. Proceeds from the Gallery at Lake Forest Park Town Center help fund these programs and events.

Good Samaritan honored by fire department

Chief Mark Bunje
Last month, a 13 year old boy from Shoreline was riding his bike when he hit a curb and flew over the handlebars and into the road. Shaken, he quickly got up and tried to continue riding. An alert passerby in his truck saw the incident, and couldn't believe the teen wasn't more seriously hurt. He decided to follow the boy for a while, just to make sure he was okay.

Then he saw the boy get off his bike, doubled over in pain and clutching his abdomen. The good samaritan stopped, called 9-1-1 and proceeded to comfort the boy.

Once Shoreline Firefighters and medics arrived, they realized he could have serious internal injuries -- though he had no visible cuts, scrapes, bruises or fractures. Responders are trained to look at the "mechanism" of injury, and this set off alarms about what could be going on internally. The decision was made for a trauma transport to the hospital. Doctors moved quickly, and the boy spent several hours in surgery to repair life-threatening internal injuries.

Today he is fully recovered and back at school. But without the vigilance of the citizen -- the outcome could have been tragic.

Fire Chief Mark Bunje issued a commendation to Dave Goldstine this week... thanking him for his role in this happy-ending story.

"On behalf of every employee of the Shoreline Fire Department, I would like to thank you for being such an alert and caring citizen.
"Your intervention when you saw a 13 year old boy fall from his bicycle has been credited with saving his life.
"Fire and EMS response crews tell me that your vigilance, and recognition of the severity of the incident made a huge difference in the outcome for that young man.
"According to his Mom, he suffered severe internal injuries that could easily have been fatal if he had not been treated within a few minutes of the crash. Because of your concern, and your call to 9-1-1, tragedy was averted.
"I am happy to tell you that the youngster is now healed and back at school -- and hopefully riding the streets of Shoreline a bit more carefully now.
"I am proud to serve in a community where folks like you are willing to step up and take charge when safety is at stake. You helped us protect our citizens and do our jobs that day and we are all extremely grateful for that."

Trucks found but Wii-U game consoles still missing

We reported last month about the theft of three trailers full of Wii-U game consoles from SeaTac, worth a cool $2 million.

Police have located the vehicles, but not the games. Two of the vehicles were in south King County, but the other was found in California.

SeaTac detectives said that two trailers and a box truck that were reported stolen from SeaTac on December 16th and were loaded with 7,000 WII-U game consoles have been recovered empty.

On December 19th, the box truck was located in Fife parked near a warehouse. The business logos had been removed from the truck.

On December 30th one of the trailers was recovered in Auburn near 277th and D St. The logos and Vin# had been covered with white paint. Additionally, “S.S. Trans” was painted on the front of the trailer.

The remaining trailer was located on January 2nd near Carson, California. The trailer’s logo had also been covered with white paint and marked with “S.S. Trans.”

SeaTac detectives are working with the Los Angeles based “Cargo Theft Task Force” on the case. Detectives said that the reward in the case has also been increased to $10,000 thanks to donations from private businesses.

The City of SeaTac contracts with the King County Sheriff’s Office for police services.

If you have information about his crime please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

Under the tutelage of teacher Linda Cobb, the Shorecrest team not only won over all the high school teams in the competition, they racked up earnings 28% higher than the return on the S/P 500 over the course of the game.

What happens when you buy a red poppy from a veteran?

Buy a Buddy Poppy, help a veteran
By Carl Christophersen
Commander,
Blackburn-Aurora VFW Post 3348

It may be of interest to your readers to see some data on what happens to the donations they make for those red Buddy Poppies --- donations that they gave to those veterans wearing their VFW hats, who, for two days, appear twice annually just outside a few local stores e.g. Central Market, QFC & Fred Meyers (just before Veterans Day and Memorial Day).

The Buddy Poppies we buy are made by patients in the various veterans’ hospitals in the USA. The work they provide is therapy for hands and minds crippled by the ravages of war, and the pay earned provides a few simple luxuries to ease the boredom of hospital life.

In 2012, including several weeks before Christmas, my VFW Post (who meet monthly in Shoreline) donated $10,000 to several veteran support organizations whose focus is on helping disabled, needy and/or homeless veterans. These included: Compass Veterans Center in Shoreline (an affiliate of the Seattle-based Compass Housing Alliance), WA Veterans Home in Retsil, WA Soldiers Home in Orting, VFW National Home for Children and USO.

Bob Phelps, K7UW

Shoreline community volunteer Robert "Bob" Phelps, K7UW, died on Friday, January 4, 2013.

A long-time volunteer in the community, Bob was instrumental in setting up the the ACS team, the Shoreline Auxiliary Communications Service. This group of "ham radio" operators works closely with the Shoreline Fire Department and the City of Shoreline Emergency Management department.

Bob knew that in time of disaster, the only reliable communication would be ham radio operators. Working with a group of volunteers, and partnering with the City of Shoreline, they acquired a van and equipped it with half a dozen types of radio communication.

Bob worked on Disaster Preparedness and was a speaker from the ACS to the community, helping to educate local groups.

From a letter to Bob from Shoreline Fire Chief Mark Bunje and City of Shoreline EOS Gail Harris:

On behalf of the Shoreline Fire Department and the City of Shoreline, I would like to thank Bob Phelps for his many years of volunteer service and assistance with Disaster Preparedness, Amateur Radio Operations and for supporting the Fire Department's mission with his intelligence, experience, and skill.
Bob's dedication and spirit of adventure set an example for the entire community on how a citizen can be of service to fire and life safety responders. His long-time commitment to the Shoreline ACS will never be forgotten, and his tireless efforts to integrate new technology are treasured and appreciated.
Bob achieved more in "retirement" than many of us accomplish during our working careers.

Weekly Weather: Cold but not cold enough for the S word, yet.

Shoreline Weather
  • The outlook
  • New Series of historic storms coming soon
  • Highlights from the past two weeks
  • Data for the past two weeks
The outlook: For the next few days we will be wet. We have a series of Pacific storm systems blowing through the area bringing us some rain at times. There's still indications that there will be some colder air moving in on Thursday morning, however it's still on the marginal side for wet snow or rain. Right now models seem to favor the strongest possibility for wet snow to be North King County, or Southern Snohomish County, Shoreline and Lake Forest Park fall into the North King County section of this possibility. I'm expecting conditions to be similar to that of Christmas day, and we probably will not see accumulating snow.

Beyond next week there are indications that waves of arctic air will break loose out of the north and into the western US, however precise timing and paths of these cold waves are still uncertain. I will add that we have not yet seen the worst of our winter.

New series on historic storms: I am working on a series of reports on historic weather events that have directly impacted the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas. We are looking for stories from our own readers on any past weather event that you can remember.  Please email your stories if you have any, thank you!

Highlights from last two weeks: We've had a lot of icy mornings the past two weeks, which have been the main significant impacting our weather. Christmas Day turned to be just slightly too warm to produce the wet snow that I was thinking could be possible. Lots of areas west and east of us received snow, however we were moderated by the warming east winds during that storm.

Weather data for December 22nd - 28th:
High temperature: 44.8ºF
Low temperature: 36.0ºF
Rainiest day: 0.46 inches
Total rainfall: 1.42 inches
Warmest day: 40.3ºF
Coldest day: 37.1ºF
Average temperature: 39.4ºF

Weather data for December 29th - January 4th:
High temperature: 46.8ºF
Low temperature: 25.8ºF
Rainiest day: 0.28 inches
Total rainfall: 0.40 inches
Warmest day: 41.9ºF
Coldest day: 32.1ºF
Average temperature: 34.8ºF

Warmest and coldest days are based on average temperature of the entire day, starting at midnight. All other averages are based on the whole week, starting Saturday morning at midnight. All weather data unless otherwise noted is sourced from Carl's Shoreline Weather.

What's happening with Tully's?

Shoreline Tully's inside Haggen Fresh grocery store

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR), owner of the Tully's brand, issued a statement on January 4, 2013, that business would continue as usual in spite of the ownership change. Tully's was in bankruptcy, was put up at auction and Tully's executives chose an investment group headed by actor Patrick Dempsey, who plays a Seattle doctor on the television show Gray's Anatomy.

However, according to our news partner, The Seattle Times, Starbucks and a group from the Philippines are contesting the sale. The foreign group is a franchisee of Tully's, but Starbucks is a competing brand. See the Times story.

Tully's operates several popular coffee shops in the area. Two are inside Haggen Fresh stores (formerly Top Foods) in Edmonds on SR 99 and in Shoreline across from City Hall. A third location in Kenmore is a stand-alone store with indoor seating.
