Another Goodwill success story: Liba Meatchi from Togo

Saturday, December 22, 2012

By Katherine Boury

When Liba Meatchi came to Goodwill he was frustrated by not being able to find a good job to support his family. Originally from Togo, he lived in Italy for over ten years playing professional basketball. “I came to America because I wanted to give my daughter a better life,” Liba remembered.

Liba Meatchi learned English at Shoreline Goodwill

After he arrived in Seattle he found his lack of English skills a barrier to finding a good job. After taking classes at Shoreline Goodwill to improve his English and job search skills, he was able to acquire a good job with the Seattle Public Schools at Highland Park Elementary.

“Goodwill is a good place,” Liba said. “It helped me to have everything I have now.”

This past year Seattle Goodwill assisted almost 6,300 students with free job training and education in our 10 community job training centers, helping 700 people facing barriers to employment find jobs.

Goodwill students come from diverse backgrounds. Last year, our students represented 102 native languages and 113 countries of origin.

For the Birds: Feed your local wintering birds

By Christine Southwick

Bushtits in Vancouver-- photo by Lyn Topinka

Wintering birds may mostly be able to endure our cold and wet winters, but you can make their little lives easier by supplying seeds, fruits, and suet. Additionally they need drinking water, which can be hard to find during freezing temperatures.

Sudden drops in temperature or windy winter storms can challenge the survival of a bird without a good fat layer. At times like these, it is especially helpful to have feeders so that birds can find food quickly and easily. Black oil sunflower seeds and suet are great high-energy heat-producing calories.

See a bird all fluffed up? It’s trying to stay warm by creating air pockets with its feathers. You can help keep them warm by creating brush piles, and having evergreen bushes for them to hunker down away from the chilling winds and some of that Northwest dampness.

Feeders should be filled throughout the winter, since constant rain can be just as chilling as cold. Watch for clumping, which means the seed is starting to spoil. Throw that seed out since mold can make birds sick, then wash the feeder with a 10% solution of bleach. Don’t want to wash feeders? One option is to buy cheap tube feeders, and put out less each day, so that most of it is eaten every day, or if you are too busy to fuss with daily refilling, put a squirrel baffle over the top of the feeder. That will keep most of the rain from getting into the feeders, and slow down the squirrels too. Then when the feeder starts getting dirty, throw it away, and replace with another cheapie,

Remember your hummer friends too: In cold weather, full hummingbird feeders don’t freeze above 28°F. Colder than 28F, bring feeders in after dark, and put out again at first light. If it stays cold during the day, tape a hand-warmer against the bottom of the feeder, or use non-LED Christmas lights. Anna’s hummingbirds feed well into dusk, and come back at early dawn. They need to fill up to survive winter over-night, and tank up in the morning to replenish their energy levels.

So, when the days are short, and the nights are long, the wild food has been mostly consumed, and insects are scarce. Heat your bird bath, give your yard birds food, and provide shelter from winter weather, and more of your birds will live to see their next Spring.

Christine Southwick is on the Board of the Puget Sound Bird Observatory and is their Winter Urban Color-banding Project Manager. She is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat Steward, having completed their forty hour class. We're happy that she is sharing her expertise with us about the birds in our backyards.

The case of the stolen van

Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired
Recently we published a story about a much-needed van being stolen from the Shoreline School for the Hearing-Impaired. Staff and police held out little hope for the vehicle's return in usable condition.

The school started a fund for a replacement van, knowing that the insurance would only cover a portion of the replacement cost.

However, the school was delighted when the van was found a few days later and seemed to be in fairly decent shape.

Peggy Mayer, Ed.D., Head of School, shares more of the story.

The thieves broke into the locked garage by jimmying the lock on the door. They then used bolt cutters to cut through the heavy duty padlock on the key box. I was amazed that they went to the trouble to carefully close the key box and arrange the padlock to disguise that it had been cut; and carefully closed the doors after they'd taken the van out to make it appear like nothing was amiss.

We've taken precautions to increase security around the garage so it's similar to the great security we have on the school buildings, though I'm a little loathe to specify what all so thieves can read through the list!

The great folks at Bill Pierre Chevy checked out the van for us after we got it back, and there was about $1000 worth of damage to one hub that was done, probably through rough use. We don't yet have it back from repair.

We so appreciate the donations to the van replacement fund. We are contacting everyone who donated and asking if their donation can be used toward the repairs that are needed.

While the van was gone, I got a call from an awesome Shoreline Firefighter who was gathering information about what happened and what help we could use so he could look into what help might be available through the great charity and community work that their firefighters participate in. We have a great relationship with the folks at Shoreline fire: some of the firefighters have relatives who have come to our school. Their community education branch has done some fantastic fire safety training for the kids. The Shoreline Fire Department is awesome.

Luckily, the van was recovered. A maintenance worker at an apartment complex in Lynnwood reported that a vehicle that didn't belong in their parking lot had been there several days. Officer Beers from the Lynnwood Police went to investigate, checked the license plates, and found out that Shoreline Police had reported the van stolen. We got a call and were able to go down and pick it up.

The floors inside the van were covered with broken glass, our first aid backpack and child car seats were missing. But the thief left behind a toothbrush (with cover), toothpaste, a small sketchbook, and two tiny vials of anti-aging serum. So obviously the person who stole our van is a young looking artist with good teeth!

We're happy the van is back because it is in great shape with relatively low miles and we need it to shuttle our students around. It's terrific that we got to leave for the holiday break with our van back and having experienced the support of the Shoreline and south Snohomish County communities.

Transit Agencies in Puget Sound – Riding Sound Transit buses

Brian is writing a series of articles about transportation options in the area

Riding Sound Transit Busses

By Brian Doennebrink

Sound Transit buses consist of long distance routes, and their fares are based on counties. If one rides only within one county, e.g. from Shoreline or Lake Forest Park or Kenmore to Seattle or Bellevue, the fare is $2.50 for an adults and $1.25 for youths aged six to 18. Passengers under 6 ride free with a fare-paying passenger. If you are a senior or a disabled person who has obtained a Regional Reduced Fare Permit, a one-county ride costs $0.75. Once you travel across a county line, for instance a trip from Mountlake Terrace to Seattle, the fares are $3.50, $2.50, and $1.50, respectively.

Sound Transit routes stop near the southern Shoreline border, just south of N. 145th, but only in non-peak times, except for the #512, which only runs on Sundays. The nearest Park / Ride is at N. 147th and NE 5th Street on the northeast side of the freeway, a fairly-long and typically wind-blown walk to the southbound buses, a moderate walk from the northbound stop. All-day access points are the Mountlake Terrace freeway station and Bothell Way NE.

ST’s north-end bus routes:
  • Route 510: Everett to downtown Seattle
  • Route 511*: Ash Way (164th/I-5) to downtown Seattle
  • Route 512*: Everett to downtown Seattle (Sundays only)
  • Route 513*: Everett to downtown Seattle (peak hours only)
* Stops at Mountlake Terrace freeway station, connections to Shoreline from King County Metro (#347 to Ballinger, North City, and Ridgecrest) and Community Transit (#130 to Aurora Village).

Other ST bus routes that you may find useful:
  • Route 522 (Woodinville to Seattle) operates seven days/week and can be accessed on Bothell Way NE, with connecting service with King County Metro.
  • Route 535 ( Lynnwood Transit Center to Bellevue) all day service M-Sat., connections to Community Transit’s #115 and #130 to Aurora Village.
  • Routes 550 and 554: seven-day service between downtown Seattle and Bellevue or Issaquah, respectively.
  • Route 555 and 556: weekday service between Northgate Transit Center, the University District, and Bellevue, Eastgate, and Issaquah.

Adopt a drain - prevent winter floods

Maintenance worker clearing drain
From the City of Shoreline

There are more than 7,000 storm drains in Shoreline. City crews work to keep storm drains clear, but we could use your help!

During the months of October through March, residents can volunteer to “adopt” a storm drain, and remove leaves and other debris that accumulate on top of drains after storm events.

By joining the Adopt-A-Drain Program you help:

  • Prevent localized flooding in your neighborhood by keeping drains free of debris.
  • Protect fish and other wildlife by keeping pollutants from entering streams, lakes and Puget Sound.

Volunteers will be provided with instructions and tools to care for a storm drain or multiple drains on their street. Volunteers will be asked to monitor and remove debris from the storm drains at least once a week during the storm season. Hours will be tracked by the volunteer and submitted to the City after each clean-up or at the end of December and March. The commitment term is for six months, October through March.

To learn more about the program, or to sign-up, visit the webpage or call Surface Water and Environmental Services at 206-801-2450.

Metro buses switch to holiday, reduced schedules next week

Reduced and holiday schedules: Dec. 24-28, Dec. 31, Jan. 1

King County Metro Transit will be operating on holiday and reduced weekday schedules Christmas week and during the New Year’s holidays.

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, Metro will operate a reduced weekday bus service, and on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, will operate buses on a Sunday schedule. Transit also will be on reduced weekday service during the “winter holiday period” Dec. 26-28. Details are posted on Metro’s holiday and reduced service page and in route timetables.

You can sign up for rider alerts here.

Using a limited schedule over holiday periods from November through January is estimated to save Metro about $1 million each year. These are planned reductions for holiday periods when Metro has historically seen a reduction in the number of weekday riders – estimated to be 15 percent or more systemwide.

Sunday schedules will be in effect on the following holidays:
  • Tuesday, Dec. 25 – Christmas
  • Tuesday, Jan. 1 – New Year’s Day
The reduced weekday schedule will be in effect on:
  • Monday, Dec. 24 – Christmas Eve
  • Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 26-28  – winter holiday period
  • Monday, Dec. 31 – New Year’s Eve
  • Monday, Jan. 21 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day
An overview of all Metro holiday service is online. Visit Metro Online for more information, or call the Customer Information Office at 206-553-3000.
