Letter from Superintendent Sue Walker

December 14, 2012

RE:  Response to Connecticut School Shootings

Dear Shoreline Schools families:

On behalf of Shoreline Schools, our hearts go out to the community of Newtown, Connecticut, and especially to the staff, students and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School. It’s difficult to comprehend the motivation for the horrific attack that took place this morning.

We have worked hard over the past few years to develop our building emergency preparedness plans. We have practiced and trained to respond with confidence.  Our plans have been developed in coordination with our local police and fire departments. In short, we have prepared extensively. Emergency Response Information flip charts are posted in common areas and classrooms across the District.

Nevertheless, the random nature of a sudden mass shooting can make us feel very vulnerable, particularly when innocent, vulnerable children are targeted. As we try to cope with this reality, we can and must help our children cope.

Our school counselors and family advocates remind us that as caring adults, we can make the difference between being overwhelmed by circumstances we cannot control and developing critical life-long emotional and coping skills.  Here are a few suggestions for helping to make students feel safe:

  •     Turn off or monitor the television. Endless news programs are likely to heighten anxiety, and young children cannot distinguish between images on television and their personal reality.
  •     Maintain a normal routine.
  •     Stick to facts.  Answer questions factually.
  •     Remember to filter what you say to a child. Avoid graphic details.
  •     Remain calm and reassuring.  Children take their cues from their parents and adults.
  •     Be optimistic.
  •     Be a good listener and observer. Pay attention to changes in behavior.
  •     Take care of yourself.  You are better able to help your students if you are coping well.  If you are anxious or upset, your students are more likely to be so as well.

The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.  We are in communication with our local police departments and they will be highly visible in the area of our schools today. It takes parents, students, staff and community working together to keep our schools safe places to learn.

Thank you for your continuing support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Sue Walker, Superintendent

Northshore Fire Chief brings smiles to kids

Northshore Fire Chief Jim Torpin reads at the Kenmore Library

On December 13, 2012, the Fire Chief from the Northshore Fire Department participated in Storytime at the Kenmore Library.

Chief Jim Torpin read to a group of nearly 40 children and their parents. Following the reading he answered a wide range of questions about all aspects of fire department services from both children and parents.

Although it was cold and gray outside, inside the beautiful new library Chief Torpin brought out smiles from the entire group when he handed out fire helmets and gold sticker badges to all of the children. Many of the kids wore their helmets and posed for pictures with the Chief.

“It’s great to be able to participate in an event like this, said Chief Torpin, “seeing all of those smiling faces really made my day.”
Kenmore Mayor David Baker and Fire Marshal Jeff LaFlam also read to the group and answered questions.

Ryu to be vice chairwoman of State House business and financial Services committee

Updated 12-15-2012 2:50pm

Majority Democrats in the State House of Representatives have selected 32nd District State Rep. Cindy Ryu as vice chair of the Business and Financial Services Committee, which considers licensing and regulation of businesses and professions, issues relating to insurance, banks and credit unions, as well as consumer protection issues relating to motor vehicles, financial services, and insurance.

“I am excited to assist Chair (Troy) Kirby in considering and passing bills this upcoming session,” Ryu said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and community members to make Washington state an even better state for businesses, consumers, and well-paying jobs.”

The Shoreline Democrat will continue serving on the Transportation Committee, tasked with writing the transportation budget, finding revenue sources for funding, and considering issues relating to transportation policy and agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Washington State Patrol.

Ryu also keeps her seat in the powerful Rules Committee, which is where all bills are subject to consideration to determine which ones will go to the House floor for a vote.

In her first term in office, Ryu served on the Community and Economic Development and Housing Committee. A few weeks ago, several policy committees were restructured in preparation for the 2013-14 biennium, narrowing the focus of some and expanding the duties of others. This committee broadened its scope, becoming the new Community Development, Housing and Tribal Affairs Committee.

Ryu will serve on this new panel, which, in addition to retaining oversight of community development and all aspects of housing, will take on a wide range of issues, including tribal-related legislation, veterans, and parks and recreation.

Ryu recently won re-election in the 32nd District, which includes Shoreline, part of northwest Seattle, south Edmonds, Woodway and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, Lynnwood and part of Mountlake Terrace.

Stolen van recovered

From the Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children

HOORAY!  WE GOT OUR STOLEN VAN BACK!

We are thrilled to report that Friday December 14, we recovered the van that was stolen nearly two weeks ago! Appropriately named “Mystery,” the returned vehicle appears to be in good condition though we are having it thoroughly checked out before pressing it back into service transporting kids.

Everyone at Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children is very grateful  for the outpouring of support and concern we experienced on the loss of our van.

We’ve had calls from neighbors, the Shoreline Fire Fighters, and others, with many creative offers of help.

The entire experience has been a great reminder of the community spirit and care we enjoy in Shoreline and the greater Seattle area.

Shoreline City Councilman Will Hall says he is campaigning for election to County Council

By Evan Smith

Shoreline City Councilman Will Hall says that he is campaigning for election in the fall to the King County Council position that Bob Ferguson now holds. Hall also is an applicant to fill the last few months of the term that Ferguson will leave in January to become state attorney general.

Hall is one of 13 applicants for appointment to fill the vacancy and one of three who have registered with the State Public Disclosure Commission as candidates for the full term that begins after the November, 2013, election, along with Democratic 32nd District State Rep. Cindy Ryu and Seattle attorney Rod Dembowski.

Registration with the PDC allows candidates to raise and spend money for a campaign.

Dembowski said Tuesday that he plans to run for the full term whether he wins appointment for the vacancy or not.

Hall said Wednesday that if he doesn’t get the appointment, he would re-evaluate whether to run for the County Council position or to seek a second four-year term on the City Council.

Hall also has registered with the PDC as a candidate for Shoreline City Council.

Candidates file in May for positions on the August primary or November general-election ballot. Non-partisan positions on both the City and County councils appear on the primary ballot only when three or more candidates file for a position. Any position with only one or two candidates appears only on the general-election ballot.

Hall also said, “If appointed to the King County Council, I will immediately resign from the Shoreline City Council and from my day job so that I can dedicate 100 percent of my attention to serving the people of King County.
"There is a lot of serious, hard work to do on the County Council. I would not want to have any distractions or potential conflicts with any other priorities”

Hall’s day job is as a legislative analyst for Snohomish County.

A 13-member advisory committee will forward the names of qualified applicants to County Executive Dow Constantine by Dec. 21. Constantine will nominate three candidates by Jan. 16. The eight remaining Council members have until March 17 to make the appointment from the three nominees. If five Council members don’t agree on a candidate, Gov-elect Jay Inslee will make the appointment from among the three finalists.

The appointee would represent Council District 1, which includes Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Woodinville, Bothell, part of Kirkland, unincorporated areas between Bothell and Kirkland, and part of north Seattle. The appointment would last through certification of the November 2013 general election.

If Hall does win the appointment to the County Council, State law would allow him to serve the remainder of his term on the City Council. The law allows someone to serve in two elective public offices as long as at least one is a part-time position.

State law would prevent Hall from running for both the City Council and County Council positions in the same year.

A Hall resignation from the City Council would create a vacancy for which the Council would appoint someone after seeking applications from Shoreline residents. That appointee also would serve through certification of the November election.

Dorn proposes changes in State assessment system for high schools

From the Office of the Superintendent of Public Education (OSPI)

Washington state needs “exit” exams to ensure that every student who receives a diploma — no matter where he or she went to school — has the knowledge and skills expected of high school graduates.

Students in the Class of 2012 were required to pass two exit exams. By the time this year’s 10th graders graduate, it will be five. State Superintendent Randy Dorn supports testing, but feels that five is too many and too expensive. He will propose that the Legislature reduce that number.

The cost of the state assessment system is high, both in terms of time and money. Exit exams are estimated to be $30 each. If students don’t pass one or more of these exams, the state provides other ways for students to demonstrate their abilities, such as the Collection of Evidence (COE). The COE is a portfolio of classroom work prepared by the student with instructional support from a teacher. The COE is currently $400 per student in each content area.

Testing is important, but over-testing creates a system in which too much classroom time is devoted to preparing for tests, taking tests and preparing to re-take tests or moving to alternatives when students fail to pass.

Washington is in the midst of changing its standards in math and English language arts with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. This provides an opportunity to take a look at our assessment system and make some commonsense changes without reducing accountability or lowering standards.

Students in the class of 2015 are required to pass five exit exams to graduate from high school:
  1. Reading High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE)
  2. Writing HSPE
  3. Biology End-of-Course (EOC) exam
  4. Algebra I EOC
  5. Geometry EOC
In January, Dorn will propose to the Legislature that we reduce the five required tests to three:
  1. Reading/writing HSPE
  2. Biology EOC
  3. Algebra I EOC

SCC Basketball teams finish pre-region play this weekend in crossover tournaments

By Doug Palmer

The Shoreline Community College Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams complete their pre-region games this weekend in two different NWAACC Crossover Tournaments. The SCC Women’s Team, off to a 4-2 start for the year are at Pasco, WA in the Columbia Basin College NWAACC Crossover Tournament and face Southwestern Oregon Community College on Friday night at 8:00 pm. The SCC men’s team is even farther East, as they play in the NWAACC Crossover at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, OR. The Dolphins are a disappointing 1-6 so far this season after finishing last year 19-13.

For the Lady Dolphins, the team started 4-0 before losing their last two games and have found difficulty scoring since their opening game win against Northwest Indian College, 100 to 47. SCC is only shooting 33% for the season and are hitting just 26% of their three point attempts. The team has a balanced attack with 9 players scoring between 5 and 9 points, but no one for SCC is scoring in double figures after 6 games. Sophomore Catlin Roussopolos and freshman Chelsea Padgett lead SCC in scoring with 8.67 averages per game. Hannah Stanger has been a solid rebounder for SCC, averaging 8 a game.

The team defeated Northwest Indian College to open the year, and then defeated Portland Community College twice and South Puget Sound Community College before they ran into Douglas College in Vancouver, BC and dropped their first game of the year, 58-41 and being outscored in the second half, 42-28. SCC then dropped a 74-62 game to TEAM NPIRE, an Australian club team.

On the men’s side of the ledger, the Dolphins are averaging 100.00 points a game in their fast paced, full court style of offense and defense, but have allowed two 130+ point games to opponents and are having their own shooting woes, as the male version of the Dolphins only shoot 34% from the field themselves and 27% from the three point arch. And SCC has been hindered by having several players benched for the pre-region schedule due grades but hopefully will have 3-4 players back eligible after fall grades are posted so they can play in the region schedule that starts on January 5.

SCC is lead by Nahshon George, a sophomore from Honolulu, HI who is averaging 19 points a game with 15 rebounds. George, a 6’8” post player, has already garnered several looks from four year colleges. He leads in the NWAACC in rebounds and is in the top 20 in scoring. Freshman guard, Steven Del Veccio, is second in scoring, averaging 15 points a game.

Shoreline faces Big Bend Community College in the opening round of their crossover at Noon on Friday.

Both teams open up region play on January 5 at Everett Community College. The Lady Dolphins do have one more game before taking Christmas break, as they play Douglas College on December 18th in the SCC Gym at 7:00pm.

Eagle Scout's project honors foster brother

Article and photos submitted by Adam and Austin Buchanen

Austin Buchanen, Shorewood Senior and now Eagle Scout, from Shoreline troop 325, decided that he wanted to do an Eagle scout project that would honor a young foster child who lived with his family for four years. Dwayne N. lived with the Buchanens and became part of their family before being adopted last year and moving to the east coast.

DSHS in Everett has a number of rooms where parents have supervised visits with their children.  The walls were painted in some of the rooms, but the whole place needed an update.

So last summer, Austin measured the walls, did a scale-size mock up of the proposed murals, got approvals from the building owner, and started painting in August with other scouts from Troop 325.

He put the last stroke on the walls on November 5, 2012. The staff at DSHS were very appreciative for the mural and to the scouts who helped paint over a number of days to get the project completed.

North City Jazz Walk announces 2013 date

Mark August 13th on your calendar for the 2013 North City Jazz Walk!
The North City Business Association (NCBA) announced the date at its November board meeting.

NCBA Board President Gary East declared, “The 2012 Jazz Walk was a rousing success in every way: People came to enjoy Jazz Bites, all music venues were packed to capacity, and more merchants than ever participated in the event.”

The Jazz Walk drew wonderful crowds of jazz lovers and families who strolled 15th Avenue NE on a gorgeous, balmy evening under a star-studded sky. The three outdoor venues made it possible for families with small children to enjoy music while the “club scene” in the indoor venues offered a more intimate atmosphere with food and beverages.

Artistic Director Keith McClelland is already working on the lineup for 2013. Says McClelland, “The North City Jazz Walk is now a staple for jazz artists in our region.  We can choose from a great selection of ensembles to offer a variety of high-quality performances. “

Once again, the City of Shoreline, the Journal Media Group, and the S/LFP Arts Council will partner with the Jazz Walk as will the loyal volunteer corps under the guidance of Charlotte Haines, Scott Keeny, and Ellen Sullivan. Last year’s director, Robin McClelland, is passing the torch.   She has summer plans that prevent her from taking the reins again, but says she will gladly train a new director to produce a successful event.

According to McClelland, “Everything is in order for someone to step in and assume the job.  It takes good organizational skills and a lot of time, but every minute is worth the effort.”

The NCBA will interview applicants in early 2013. If you are interested in submitting a request, contact Gary East.
