Shtikel Sticks It To Shorecrest - T-Birds Triumph  50-43

For the first time in four years, the Shorewood girls basketball team beat Shorecrest Saturday night, 50-43.

T-Birds Senior Masha Shtikel led the way with a game-high 21 points, as she and fellow seniors Trisha Fernandez, Lauren Thompson, Gabby Hager, and Kassie Rasmussen got a giant monkey off their backs by finally earning a win over the Scots.  Rasmussen and Thompson both distinguished themselves on the court.  Rasmussen with 8 points to go along with lock-down defense on the Scots'  powerful post player, Oniye Chibuogwu; and Thompson with her steady ball-handling, as the T-Birds turned the ball over only 12 times, compared to 23 turnovers for Shorecrest.

SC freshman Bella Kemp led her team in scoring with 14 points.

Ramsden sisters lead T-Bird gymnastics at Bainbridge meet

Ramsden sisters lead T-Bird gymnastics

Shorewood took 4th place with a score of 119.95 behind 1st place Bainbridge 151.1, 2nd place Holy Names 129.85 and Shorecrest 125.00; and the Shorewood coach Susan Riley could not have been more proud of the team’s performance.

Why is the coach proud of how the team performed…while getting 4th place? “We were not at full strength, as we were missing four of our top six gymnasts from the lineup. Many of the gymnasts, stepped outside their comfort zone and competed on events for the first time.” Riley said.

The Ramsden sisters, Emily and Morgan were the only Shorewood Varsity gymnasts that competed at the meet. There are six gymnasts on the varsity squad, of those six, one is out with an injury; while three were in Hawaii to perform, as members of the Shorewood Flag team. “Emily and Morgan performed very well and even more importantly, they encouraged the less experienced  gymnasts to do their best and have fun, what more could a coach ask for” Riley stated.

When all the scores were tallied, Shorewood was just 5 points behind Shorecrest and less than 10 points behind Holy Names. “Given that we were not at full strength, and were not far behind the other teams, it is encouraging that Shorewood will have a great showing at the end of the season.” Riley said.

Morgan Ramsden was Shorewood’s top All-Around, placing 9th on Vault, 8th on Beam, 8th on Floor and 8th in the All Around. Emily Ramden placed 7th on Floor and 11th in the All-Around. Sophie Sando of Shorewood placed 7th on Beam.

'Monster Garage' gets plows prepped for winter

Monster trucks will plow the roads this winter

WSDOT says that getting a new snowplow isn’t as simple as going to a dealership and placing an order.
Getting what we need to plow, sand, salt and deice the roads requires a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of behind-the-scenes tinkering.

They are adding 14 new snow plows into the fleet, which means they have to modify these International trucks so they can push a blade. Custom auto shops won’t take on these kinds of jobs because it slows down their other business.

It’s hard to sum up a dollar amount, but having our own shop saves the state of lot of time and money – plus, it’s pretty cool.
