School Board to consider resolutions for Sunset Park

Potential pllan for Sunset School Park

According to the Friends of Sunset Park, the Shoreline School Board will be moving ahead with plans to demolish the Sunset Elementary School and turn the use of the land over to the City of Shoreline for a public park.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday November 5 in the Board Room of the School District’s administrative offices at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE.

The school board will vote on the adoption of a resolution to temporarily surplus the Sunset Elementary School Site. This action will allow the School District to proceed with an agreement with the City of Shoreline in which the city would assume responsibility for the maintenance, utilities, supervision and scheduling of the recreational use of the Sunset site once the demolition is completed.

Assuming that the resolution passes, the board will vote to award the demolition contract, including removal of the foundation. The total bid is $276,075.

King County meets goal of adopting out 200 cats - extends free adoption to December 31

Susan Conn and Pearl were the
200th cat adoption during the
promotion, which has been
extended to Dec 31
Regional Animal Services meets October cat and kitten adoption goal, and will extend adult cat adoption special through December 31

Pearl is a gem for Regional Animal Services of King County. The four-year-old cat is the 200th feline adopted from the King County Pet Adoption Center this month. The center waived adoption fees for cats six months and older as part of a special promotion in October.

When we set the goal of adopting 200 cats and kittens this month, we set our sights high, even though we weren’t at all sure if we’d reach that number,” said Dr. Gene Mueller, manager of Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC). “Not only did we reach our goal, but we did it with two days to spare.”
Susan Conn of Seattle was the lucky adopter who picked out Pearl on Monday afternoon. She says she was inspired by the special event that RASKC held this month, waiving the adoption fee.
“While I love the energy of kittens, I have a soft spot for the older cats,” Conn added. “Pearl was the first cat that caught my eye. I did look at other animals, but I came back to her, and am glad I did. I think we will get along splendidly.”

Mueller says the “no fee for adult cats” promotion was so successful that RASKC will extend the deal through December 31. The fee for kittens will remain at $100. All felines adopted from RASKC are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and have tested negative for feline leukemia. Adopters also receive a starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet food for their new pet, as well as a certificate for a free veterinary wellness exam, courtesy of the Seattle/King County Veterinary Medical Association.

People looking to adopt from RASKC can view available pets by visiting the King County site and clicking on “Adopt a Pet.” Even better, prospective pet owners can visit the Pet Adoption Center in person to pick out their new furry friend. The center is located at 21615 64th Ave S in Kent. Hours are 3 – 6 p.m. Monday, noon – 6 p.m. Tuesday – Friday, and noon – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

OP-ED: Former mayor Ron Hansen weighs in on Shoreline Prop 1

Ron Hansen is a former Shoreline City Council Member and Mayor.

By Ron Hansen

I received an extremely false and misleading political advertisement. I will address it and urge you to please vote yes on Shoreline Prop 1.

Why do I want you to vote for Prop 1?
  1. I want your and my water utility rates capped.
  2. I want Shoreline water utility ratepayers to stop subsidizing the City of Seattle for 2-3 million dollars per year.
  3. I want local government answerable to Shoreline ratepayers. Seattle's responsibility is to their residents and ratepayers.
For the betterment of all Shoreline residents, vote for Proposition 1.

Why is "No on Prop 1" so misleading? The mailer says "Don't Sign a Blank Check." Seattle already has the blank check and cashes it for 2-3 million dollars per year. Over $35 million dollars from Shoreline ratepayers has been transferred to Seattle (with a 14% surcharge to non-Seattle residents). This will continue as long as Seattle is in charge.

The mailer makes statements. Some are true but are presented in such a manner as to be misleading. Yes, Shoreline has special purpose districts, but they have no authority over Seattle Public Utilities' operation of our water district. SPU operates the water system for the entire western portion of Shoreline, approximately 2/3 of Shoreline's area and population.

The mailer states, "You pay no utility taxes." This is false. Seattle gets a 15% utility tax now and Shoreline gets 6%. I want those taxes kept in Shoreline.

It states "your bills finance good maintenance". That is false for westside residents of Shoreline. SPU's policy is to "fix the immediate problems". Band-Aids are used instead of real fixes. There are areas of inadequate flow which could compromise the fire department's ability to fight a major fire.

It states "if Shoreline buys the water system you will pay more." That is unlikely but we will pay more, if Shoreline does not buy the SPU system now.

It states "your water bill will be 11% higher than it should be." It is already 29% higher than it should be. "Saving" 18% would be a bargain!

It states the Shoreline has "no agreement to purchase from Seattle, no price, no operating plan, and no certainty of separation costs." There is an informal agreement as to cost, i.e. $26.6 million. There cannot be a formal agreement unless Prop 1 is passed. There is a certainty of separation costs with a high and low range. If the highest range were exceeded, this purchase still makes sense. Remember, Seattle has the "Blank Check". I cannot stress enough how important it is to westside Shoreline ratepayers to get Prop 1 passed. It will save us all on our utility bills. And while the SWD ratepayers won't be affected in their utility rates, all of Shoreline's taxpayers will benefit from utility taxes going to Shoreline, not Seattle.

This purchase will be paid from utility bonds repaid by westside ratepayers only. Eastside residents will not pay for this program.

46th Legislative District candidate Cann denies incumbent Pollet’s charges

By Evan Smith

When appointed incumbent Democratic 46th District State Rep. Gerry Pollet outpolled fellow Democrat Sylvester Cann by a 60 percent to 40 percent margin in a two-person primary, he seemed to be well on his way to victory in the general election, but several things have made the race contentious.

First, the Seattle Times endorsed Cann, calling him “independent, rational and patient.”

Then, Cann continued his fundraising advantage. Cann reports raising $122,180 and spending $108,581, with supporting independent expenditures of $55,704 and opposing independent expenditures of $842, compared to Pollet’s $113,644 raised and $106,900 spent, with supporting independent expenditures of $27,281.

Next, Pollet sent these comments Oct. 26: 1) “ It’s important for voters to know that the American Federation of Teachers filed a complaint against STAND for its mailing on behalf of Cann,” citing an article in the Stranger; 2) “Additionally, mailings and e-mails for Cann in the past week also illegally used a photo of President Obama and falsely claimed that Cann was endorsed by NARAL (the National Abortion Rights Action League). It's illegal to use a photo of an official who has not endorsed or given permission. Cann is not even endorsed by the Democratic Party. This is the second time that mailings for Cann falsely claimed he was endorsed by NARAL. There were news stories on this in July and early August.”

Cann responded Oct. 28: “First, none of these so-called ‘allegations’ have anything to do with me or my campaign. I am neither responsible, nor can I comment, on what outside interest groups mail on my behalf.
“What I can say is that I am proud to have the support of business and union organizations, the environmental community, and education advocates on all sides of the reform debate.
“And I have these endorsements for a reason: I have a temperament and track record that can bring people together to solve problems.
“I’ll stay focused on the issues that matter; great schools and living wage jobs. Hopefully voters will notice the difference of focus and motivation.”

The candidates had appeared at a candidate forum that the Washington Environmental Council sponsored Oct. 21.

Cann called the debate “productive,” noting that it focused on environmental issues. Cann said that he is strong on environmental issues because of his background in engineering.

Cann told me that his campaign is strong: “People seem to really understand the differences between me and my opponent, and are ready to make their voice heard. “

Incumbent Pollet said that the event “showed a world of difference in terms of both my having far more experience and commitment to environmental and tax reform-issues.

“I did use the forum as an opportunity to announce that I'll be working on bills to create a solar energy loan program for homeowners, and we also discussed my work to improve park-and-ride and bus access on 522 without putting park and rides in residential neighborhoods or greenbelts.”

The 46th District includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and northeast Seattle.

Shoreline Community College converted on Skagit Valley College penalties for a 4-1 win

It was an exciting day at Dolphin Field right from the start. The Shoreline Community College Women's Soccer Team took on Skagit Valley College for their final match of the season. SCC needed a win in order to secure a playoff spot.

The Dolphins came out ready with Rebekah Tenbroek-Hansen converting a header from a corner by Angela Celedon in the 2nd minute of play. Although there was no score again until the 37th minute the intensity of play continued. The next score came from Ashlann Wood, her first of the season, on a free kick from mid-field!

SCC was not done for the half even with a 2-0 lead. They kept the pressure on Skagit Valley goalie Jordan Bougher in the box. On a very controversial hand ball call against SVC in the box Sara Gilmore of SCC was given a penalty kick. Gilmore converted to put SCC up 3-0 going into the half.

In the second half both teams came out very aggressive but were not able to convert. In the75th minute SVC was finally able to convert. Sarah Tuemmler scored on a cross from Cody White. In the 77th minute SCC goalie Lauren Schoonover received a yellow card in the box giving Skagit Valley a chance to score and make it a 3-2 game. SVC was not able to convert hitting the sidebar of the goal. With this relief the Dolphins were able to extend their lead to 4-1 when Elle Blume converted on a corner kick from Sara Gilmore.

Penalties were a major issue for SVC in this game and SCC was able to covert for a comfortable 4-1 win. This win puts SCC in 3rd place in the Northern Region and qualifies them for NWAACC Playoffs. SCC will take on Highline Community College on Wednesday, November 7th. Times and location are yet to be determined. Be sure to check online at shoreline.edu/athletics for updates.

Shorecrest girls soccer advances to state

On an evening when the wind was the biggest overriding factor in the game, the Shorecrest Scots girls' soccer team used it best to their advantage in defeating Stanwood 1-0 Saturday at Shoreline Stadium, to take third place in the District 1  3A playoffs.

The win advances the Scots to the 3A State Tournament that begins next week when they travel to Renton to play the Liberty Patriots.  Date and time are to be announced.

Stanwood had the wind at their backs for the first half, but failed to capitalize on several chances.  Shorecrest keeper Frida Swensen made several key saves to keep the Spartans off the board.

But when the teams changed sides after the break, the tide turned in the Scots' favor.

Just five minutes into the second half, Swensen's long free kick was corralled by senior Sophia Flohr, who dribbled in and beat the Spartans' goalie from close range for the game-winner.

For the remainder of the game Shorecrest controlled the action, aided by the wind which kept the Spartans from advancing the ball.

Shoreline Community College men's soccer ends season on loss to Skagit Valley College

Shoreline men's soccer has tough end to season

Shoreline Community College Men's Soccer had a tough end to their season against Skagit Valley College at Dolphin Field today. The Dolphins suffered a 8-1 loss. Through watching the game you would have never known there was such a large differential in the score as both teams continued to push hard.

Playing on a muddy field proved to be difficult and it took both teams sown time to get used to the difference in how the ball traveled. In the 28th minute Skagit Valley College  found their spot and Bradley Diaz scored the first goal of the game on Dolphin goalie Marco Martinez. Shoreline's Tsupasa Takahashi converted on a penalty kick shot in th 42nd minute to tie the game up 1-1.

Skagit Valley  score six of their eight goals in the in second half of the game. Without much pressure from the Dolphin forwards in the second half Skagit Valley players pushed up significantly. This gave opportunity for defenders like Sten Mejlander to score. SVC was playing well as a team and had eight different players scoring goals.

This will end the season for both Shoreline and Skagit Valley. Neither of these teams will be moving on to playoffs. The teams have a season to be proud of. They both ended today on a high note in leaving everything on the field during this very high energy and passionate game.

Shoreline Community College clinches another road win

Happy Dance!

October 31, the Shoreline Community College Volleyball team made the trip to Whatcom Community College and rallied to win in five very close sets at Orca Pavilion.

Unexpectedly SCC was without their only Sophomore and the leader of the team, Lauren Deatrick. Deatrick normally starts as an outside hitter for the Dolphins. Due to an irritation of an injury during warm-ups she was on the bench.

This was not enough to bring the Dolphins down. Sierra Ernst, who started for Deatrick, came away with six aces for the night. Arianna Garcia and Shawna Pung were both hitting over 300.00.  Everyone on the Dolphin team stepped up and made a contribution that provided the team with yet another big road win.

After the game SCC's Co- Head Coach Mark West stated, "I am very much impressed with this year's team. They just continue to beat the odds."

SCC will now head home to finish out their regular season. The Dolphins played Everett November 1, then Bellevue for Lauren Deatrick's Sophmore Night on Tuesday, November 6 at 7pm. Be sure to be at the SCC Gym to cheer on the Dolphins as they continue to beat the odds.

Shoreline Community College builds momentum with 3-0 win over Everett Community College

The Shoreline Community College Dolphin Volleyball team took the victory away from the Everett Community College Trojans tonight. The Dolphins stepped onto the floor ready to go and never released. Winning in three quick sets the Dolphins held control of the game all the way through. You could see the continued enthusiasm as they won sets 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18.

“The girls had fun tonight. They added enthusiasm and vigor to the victory,” said Shoreline Coach Mark West.

Lauren Deatrick the team’s team captain and only sophomore joined the team on the floor after sitting multiple games due to injuries. She was definitely strong and ready to play tonight. Deatrick came back with 12 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces and hit .600.

It was not just Deatrick that was hitting well tonight. The team was hitting .337. That is the best the Dolphins have hit all season. The entire Shoreline team was playing strong. Shawna Pung came away with 6 kills and hit .375 and Jalyn Anderson had 37 assists on the night. Elena Estrada came away with one of her biggest nights of the season playing on the opposite side of the court than her regular position. Estrada had 3 kills and hit .1000.

The team is building up momentum as they head into the end of regular season and prepare for the NWAACC Championships. Shoreline has their last regular season game and sophomore night at Dolphin Gym on Tuesday, November 6th at 7:00pm.

Fall back - daylight savings time ends this weekend

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Spring ahead - fall back.

Eight months of daylight savings time ends this Sunday at 2am. Set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

You can either stay up for it, or set your clocks an hour back before you go to bed on Saturday night.

The fire department reminds you to change the batteries in your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors.

The cloud cover is already making the evenings very dark. We have few sidewalks and uneven coverage from street lights.

Dog in the dark
It will be very dark in the mornings. Drivers should watch for teenagers headed for school bus stops and be aware that at many bus stops the students are actually standing on the street.

People going for jogs and walking their dogs after work should think about what drivers can see of them and their dogs in the dark and rain.

Wear reflective clothing, put reflectors on your dog and your dog's leash. And keep your dog close to you on streets with no sidewalks.

Bastyr Cancer Research Center looking for participants for breast / prostate clinical trial

Leanna Standish, PhD, ND, LAc,
Board Certified in Cancer

In August 2011, Lisa Clinton was on vacation when she felt a lump in her breast. Upon returning home and visiting her doctor, tests confirmed what she feared: It was cancer. The 53-year-old former competitive figure skater was shocked, since she had always taken care of health.

“The body changes after you hit age 50,” Clinton says. “I’d never had a mammogram done until last year, when the lump was found. But once it was discovered, I decided to fight it head-on, and make some wholesale changes in my life.”

With the same spirit and determination found during her days of competing, Clinton changed her diet, exercised more, and harnessed the power of positive thinking. Additionally, she decided to visit Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center (BIORC) and its medical director, Leanna Standish, PhD, ND, LAc, FABNO. As a patient there, Lisa participated in the turkey tail mushroom clinical trial, in which she was prescribed a mushroom extract from Japan that has been shown to help fight cancer. The decisions have had a profound effect on her health.

“Dr. Standish recommended a treatment I call the ’combo platter,’ which consists of taking care of the body, mind and soul,” says Clinton. “Taking turkey tail mushrooms to fight the cancer, administering vitamin C intravenously to boost my immune system and focusing on mental imagery to lower stress have all helped immensely.”

“Lisa has kept an open mind and heart throughout her treatment,” says Dr. Standish. “I believe it is this kind of positive attitude, combined with our knowledge of integrative medicine that has helped her get better.”

In November, Clinton will have a follow-up mammogram to see if the changes she’s made in her life, including visits to BIORC, have helped eliminate the cancer from her body. In the meantime, she has been so inspired by the natural steps she’s taking that the former skater is starting the Ice Angels Foundation to help pay for naturopathic doctor visits for cancer patients.

“I feel confident that I am taking the proper steps to fight breast cancer naturally, feel very healthy and want to help others who are fighting the same battle and are looking toward natural medicine,” says Clinton.

To learn more about the integrative cancer research being done at BIORC, and for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer (or men who have prostate cancer) or to participate in their ground-breaking, innovative clinical trials done jointly with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), call 425-602-3311.

Bastyr University is internationally recognized as a pioneer in natural medicine. As the largest accredited university for natural health arts and sciences in the U.S., Bastyr’s campus located near Seattle, Washington, offers more than 17 degree and certificate programs in fields such as naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, and whole-food nutrition. Founded in 1978, the University now includes a leading-edge research facility (the Bastyr University Research Institute)
