Mountlake Terrace farmers market will not return next year

According to our news partner the MLTNews, the Mountlake Terrace Business Association will discontinue its support of the MLT Farmers Market, which will not return next summer.

The market has been in operation for three years and was supported by grants from the business association.

According to MLTBA treasurer Danil Semenov, the main issue influencing the decision to close the market was funding. The MLTBA solely financed the market for three years with member dues, and while there was a core group of 200-300 regular customers, the base “did not grow beyond that point,” he said.

Shorewood soccer play by play with Everett

Coach Wilkins reports:

Today it was #4 seed Shorewood vs #1 seed Everett.

The first half saw Shorewood bring a very strong possession game that frustrated Everett. Both teams had a couple chances but it ended in a 0-0 tie.

In the second half, Everett turned things up a notch and scored in the 48th minute from a corner kick by defender Rosie Sittauer. Everett continued to have more of the attack and scored again in the 62nd minute on a goal by Morgan McCarthy.

The game was put out of reach on a third score. This one was finished by Bailey McMullen. I believe Katie Johnson was in goal for Everett and Shorewood used Ashley Swan and Ashley Garay.

Everett is 1-0 in playoffs and plays Tuesday in the semi finals. Shorewood is 0--1 and plays Tuesday in the losers bracket.

Shoreline drops two in Dorian Harris Halloween Classic pool play

The Shoreline Community College Dolphin Volleyball Team did not get the start they were hoping to in the Dorian Harris Halloween Classic in Mt. Hood, Oregon. The Dolphins dropped both matches in pool play.

The first game of the day was against Walla Walla. Shoreline could not seem to keep up with the Warriors who are ranked 2nd in the Eastern Region. This sophomore studded team has only lost two region games this year.

Shoreline's second loss of the day came from Chemeketa whom the Dolphins had previously beaten in the Shoreline Crossover Tournament a few weeks ago. This was a very close match.

Shoreline pushes on and still has a chance to take home the Champions Trophy. The Dolphins are currently taking on Whatcom. Earlier in the season the Dolphins defeated Whatcom but we will see later how they match up today. Stay posted with all the tournament results at the NWAACC Volleyball results page.

Shorecrest boys tennis takes District 1 3A championship

From left: co-coach Barry Majorowicz; senior Evan Saunders with doubles partner sophomore Nishaant Limaye; junior Andrew Copsey; sophomore Nick North with doubles partner junior Chris Sato. Not pictured: co-coach Suzanne Monson

Shorecrest High School claimed the Northwest District 1 3A Boys Tennis championship in Stanwood while qualifying four players and one alternate to May 2013's state tournament in Kennewick. After finishing second (10-3) during Wesco's regular league season, the Scots advanced five players through sub-district play to the district competition. Higher individual finishers earned points toward the district title.

The Scots' doubles pairing of junior Chris Sato and sophomore Nick North brought home 2nd place medals after a 3-6, 3-6 finals match against Cameron McDowell and Stuart Schachle of Shorewood. Earlier, McDowell and Schachle bumped Shorecrest teammates sophomore Nishaant Limaye and senior Evan Saunders into consolation play (6-2, 4-6, 4-6) but Limaye and Saunders scrapped back to win two more rounds against Glacier Peak (6-3, 6-0) and Stanwood (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) for 3rd place and the final entry to the state tourney.

The Highlanders' sole singles entry, junior Andrew Copsey, also battled through the consolation bracket to log two match victories, earning a 4th place finish and an alternate slot to Kennewick in the spring. Copsey's wins came over Oak Harbor (6-3, 6-2) and Everett (6-1, 3-0; injury default) before he was stopped by Glacier Peak's Patrick Luangrath (5-7, 2-6).

"Our squad was incredibly fortunate to have a depth of talent all season long," says co-coach Suzanne Monson, who teamed with veteran coach Barry Majorowicz, returning from retirement, to lead the Scots. "Nine of our 14 varsity regular-season players are outstanding seniors who played tennis all four of their high school years - and our younger guys are absolutely tenacious - so the combination was hard to beat."

Seniors Louis Born; Brian Fortney; Julian Frare-Davis; Scott Holmdahl; Brian Hoover; Keilan Lemoine-Kowalski; Andras Szucs and Joe Uchytil added leadership, says Monson. Singles hitter Emahd Kahn, the only freshman on the squad, rounded out the team. Kahn was Shorecrest's other singles sub-district contender, earning a 6th place finish there.

CORRECTION: Everett 21, Shorewood 19

By Evan Smith

In our story about Shorewood's 21-19 football loss at Everett Thursday, we had the correct score in the headline and in the story, but Shorewood's score by quarters was incorrect.

The correct score by quarters:
     Shorewood 0 0 13 6 -- 19
     Everett ---- 0 7 14 0 -- 21

When the Thunderbirds scored a fourth-quarter touchdown, they missed on a two-point-conversion attempt that would have tied the game.

The loss left the T-birds with a 1-8 record (0-4 Wesco 3A South) going into a Friday, Nov. 2, home game against Stanwood, which had a 3-5 record (1-3 Wesco 3A North) going into a Friday, Oct. 26 home game with Shorecrest.

The Shorewood-Stanwood game is scheduled for Shoreline Stadium at 8 pm Nov. 2.

Everett has a 1-8 record (0-4 Wesco 3A North) going into a game at Shorecrest Friday, Nov. 2. The Everett-Shorecrest game at 5 pm Nov. 2 will be the first game of a double header at Shoreline Stadium.

Shoreline Community College volleyball pulls off a close win at Edmonds Community College

Wednesday was another solid performance for SCC Dolphin Volleyball against Edmonds Community College. In the tight match up SCC pulled out a win the four sets. Starting with very solid serving from Freshman players Elena Estrada with 4 straight points at a critical part of the first set. Later in the second set Emily Dunham hit 7 straight points.

However, it was the off the bench play of Sierra Ernst serving and hitting that provided the emotional and mental performance that made the Dolphins a complete team. Ernst played for the team Captain and only Sophomore Lauren Deatrick who was sick. Although Deatrick was at the match cheering for her teammates could not play nor has she been able to practice the last 3 days.

"It is a huge thing to come into a game and play without pressure and have fun like Sierra did tonight, she is a real big part of our success this year and especially tonight," says Shoreline Community College Assistant Coach Mark West.

Shoreline now has a record of 11-14 and is looking strong for the upcoming NWAACC Volleyball Conference Championship. This weekend the Dolphins will be traveling to Mt. Hood Oregon for the Annual Dorian Harris Halloween Classic. Their first game will be on Friday, October 26th at 2pm against Walla Walla.

$3.5 million for third mile of Aurora, $24.5 to improve Bothell Way

Location of projects funded in our area
Follow link to Project Map

Transportation projects totaling more than $7.9 billion will move forward in the central Puget Sound region, following action by the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Executive Board to approve the 2013-2016 Regional Transportation Improvement Program on October 25.

The Regional Transportation Improvement Program provides a list of current transportation projects in all four counties of the region – King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish. These projects are funded with federal, state and local funds, including recent federal grants awarded through PSRC.

Among the projects receiving PSRC funding in the Shoreline / Lake Forest Park / Kenmore area are:
  • Aurora Ave N (Third Mile), N 192nd St to N 205th St  - $3,411,665
  • N 175th Street Overlay Preservation Project, Midvale Avenue N to I-5 - $190,229
  • Interurban Trail - Burke Gilman Connection – 195th Street Trail (1st Ave NE – 5th Ave NE) - $371,950
  • Westminster Way N Overlay Preservation Project, N 145th Street to Aurora Avenue N - $246,054
  • Lynnwood to Northgate Link Light Rail Extension - $2,691,969
  • Briarcrest safe routes to school - NE 158th and 27th NE sidewalks and curb ramps $425,000
  • LFP NE 178th roadway improvements (Brookside Blvd NE to 33rd Ave NE) $912,000
  • Kenmore - Bothell Way lane widening, turn lanes, 57th NE to 65 NE $24,436,174

“Securing federal transportation funding for communities in the region is one of the key roles of the Puget Sound Regional Council,” said Commissioner Josh Brown, PSRC President.  “These projects are advancing a better system that gets people and goods where they need to go, provides transportation choices, and helps grow jobs in the region.”
To find out more, visit PSRC’s online Project Map, which makes it easy to zoom in and see projects planned in different parts of the region.

The Transportation Improvement Program is required under federal and state laws, and helps to ensure that transportation projects are meeting regional policies and federal and state requirements such as those under the Clean Air Act.

PSRC develops policies and coordinates decisions about regional growth, transportation and economic development planning within King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. The Council is composed of over 80 entities, including all four counties, cities and towns, ports, state, and local transportation agencies and tribal governments within the region. PSRC is also the lead regional economic development planning resource and home to the Prosperity Partnership.

Letter to the Editor: Pro-Shoreline Board endorses Shoreline Proposition 1

We welcome all points of view on this and other election issues, but we will not accept more than one (maximum 300 word) letter from any one writer. We reserve the right to reject letters that merely repeat points already posted.

To the Editor:

Pro-Shoreline Board endorses Shoreline Proposition 1 for the following reasons:

  • Shoreline ratepayers west of I-5 will gain local control just as residents east of I-5 have with the Shoreline Water District
  • Ratepayers will have 100% our money reinvested back into Shoreline's facilities, not Seattle's.  This would also mean our ratepayers would no longer pay a 14%  surcharge fee AND a 15% utility tax to the City of Seattle, which goes directly into Seattle's general fund to help pay for Seattle parks, police and fire.
  • Citizens will have taxation with local representation.  You will gain a voice on rate, services, upgrades and investment decisions through your elected officials, not Seattle's
  • There will be no increase in property taxes or projected water charges, in fact financial analysis indicates that over time the City's water rates might be less than those projected by SPU, if we remain with them
  • Reinvestment of our money for facility improvements will improve water flow for firefighting and safety purposes

We encourage Shoreline voters to support the Seattle Public Water Utilities acquisition and VOTE YES for Shoreline Proposition 1.

Adopt a cat for free until Oct 31 from King County Animal Services

The best things in life may be free, but some very good things will soon go up in price. Until October 31, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) is still waiving the adoption fee for cats six months and older.

“Our goal was to adopt 200 cats and kittens during this special event, and we’re very close to reaching that number,” said RASKC Manager Dr. Gene Mueller. “The clock is ticking, so we encourage anyone who is thinking about adopting a cat to stop by the Pet Adoption Center soon.”

Normally $55, the adoption fee for cats older than six months is waived during this special event. The fee for kittens (younger than six months) remains at $100. All cats and kittens from RASKC are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and have tested negative for feline leukemia. Adopters also receive a starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet food for their new pet, as well as a certificate for a free veterinary wellness exam, courtesy of the Seattle/King County Veterinary Medical Association.

People looking to adopt from RASKC can view available pets by clicking on “Adopt a Pet.” Even better, prospective pet owners can visit the Pet Adoption Center in person to pick out their new furry friend. The center is located at 21615 64th Ave. S. in Kent. Hours are 3 – 6 p.m. Monday, noon – 6 p.m. Tuesday – Friday, and noon – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Donate old eyeglasses at Aurora Plumbing & Electrical Supply

By Renee Smith

I’d like to share a discovery I made the other day. Aurora Plumbing and Electrical supply at 145th and Aurora hosts a collection box for eyeglasses and lenses to go to the Lions Club and be distributed to people in need in Jamaica and other poor countries.

Vince Christoffersen, an employee there, had just returned from his annual trip to help distribute glasses in Jamaica. The glasses put in the box get sent to a company in Olympia that donates their services to screen all the glasses and lenses and read their prescription. Opticians then travel to other countries to screen people in need and match them with an appropriate prescription.

Who doesn’t have an old pair of glasses in their drawer they don’t know what to do with?  What a great cause.

Change your Clock; Check your Smoke Alarms

As the time change approaches on November 4, Shoreline Fire encourages citizens to make another change that could save their lives – checking the batteries in their smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms save lives by giving people the early warning they need to get out safely,”  explained Melanie Granfors, Shoreline's information officer. “A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Shoreline Fire offers the following smoke alarm safety tips:

  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps”, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly.
  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
  • Smoke rises; install smoke alarms following manufacturer's instructions high on a wall or on a ceiling. Save manufacturer's instructions for testing and maintenance.
  • Be sure the smoke alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Alarms that are hard-wired (and include battery backup) must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Finally, prepare and practice an escape plan so that you and your family can get out of your home safely should there be a fire. Plan to meet in a place a safe distance from the fire and where first responders can easily see you. For more information on smoke alarms or creating your family escape plan, email

Shoreline Community College signs transfer agreements with two Chinese universities

By Jim Hills

Shoreline Community College now has academic transfer agreements with two premier universities in China.

At the heart of the pacts with Tsinghua and Qingdao universities is a “1 +1 +2” plan. After their first year, students from the two Chinese universities can come to Shoreline for the second year toward a two-year associate’s degree from Shoreline. With a Shoreline degree in hand, those students could then apply for admission to a four-year university in the U.S.

“We are honored and excited to have these agreements in place,” said Lee Lambert, President of Shoreline Community College and who helped negotiate and then signed the agreements. “Our students, our college and our state must develop the skills to be globally successful. These agreements will help make those skills a reality.”

The agreements have been in the works for nearly a year through outreach efforts in China by Lambert and Diana Sampson, Executive Director of International Education at Shoreline. Delegations from both Tsinghua and Qingdao have also visited Shoreline as part of the discussions.

Damon Oliveto of Shorewood to be honored as a Hero in the Classroom

Damon Oliveto, Shorewood teacher
honored as Hero in the Classroom

Damon Oliveto, marketing and business education teacher at Shorewood High School, has been selected as a Symetra Hero in the Classroom. Representatives of Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks presented him with the award at a ceremony in his classroom Tuesday.

Damon will receive two tickets to the Seahawks home game against Minnesota on Nov. 4, a VIP sideline experience at CenturyLink Field, $350 for classroom supplies, as well as recognition at school and on field during game day. In addition, Shorewood received a check for $1,000 from Symetra to benefit school programs.

Hero selection is based on a teacher's ability to balance the core curriculum with students' individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students' long-term success.

“As a teacher, Mr. Oliveto gives an immeasurable amount of his time to aiding his students,” his nomination by a colleague read in part. “From staying after school, coming in early, and taking all the time necessary to ensure his students can master course material, Mr. Oliveto, or Mr. O as most students refer to him, goes above and beyond on a daily basis, because it is his calling to do so.”

Damon teaches AP Economics, Financial Algebra and Marketing at Shorewood and is the advisor to the school’s DECA club. He worked as a manager for Key Bank before joining the Shorewood staff in 2005.

“Mr. Oliveto is the reason I chose to pursue a career in marketing,” wrote a former student. “From the moment I applied for college I knew what I wanted to do because Mr. Oliveto provided me the knowledge and understanding of marketing and inspired me to pursue something I have grown to love. I owe much of my academic success, both in high school and college, to Mr. O and his will and determination to continually help me in my pursuits. Mr. O was and still is my Hero in the Classroom.”

Twenty-four King County area teachers will be selected as 2012 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom for their outstanding leadership and instruction.

For more information and to nominate a teacher today, visit the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom Web site.

Pink Polka Dots raise $75,000 for cancer research with golf tournament

Pink Polka Dot members at the 2012 Golf Tournament

The Pink Polka Dot’s annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament, held on September 8th, brought friends, family, community and business supporters together in the fight against pediatric brain tumors.

The event raised nearly $75,000 to fund research under the direction of Dr. Jim Olson at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Children’s Research Center.

Following a beautiful afternoon of golf in sunshine, about 150 guests enjoyed the dinner, silent auction, and program at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. Seattle Children’s Oncologist Dr. Sarah Leary spoke about recent breakthroughs in research and Andy Keener, a former patient who now works with Dr. Olson, expressed how important direct research funding which the Guilds provide is moving new treatments forward.

The event is sponsored each year by Integrated Technologies, and generous matching funds are provided by the Coxon Family Foundation, in loving memory of Sydney, who passed away in 2006 from a pediatric brain tumor.

The successful fundraiser enabled the Pink Polka Dot Junior Guild to reach the $500,000 contributed to date mark.

Seattle Seahawks players are visiting two elementary schools in the District this fall as part of the National Football League's "Play 60" youth health and fitness campaign. The program is focused on making the next generation of kids more active and healthy by encouraging them to engage in physical activity for at least 60 minutes a day.

Wide receiver Golden Tate and the Seahawks mascot “Blitz” visited Syre Elementary on October 23 and encouraged the students at an all-school assembly to work hard in school, respect their teachers and each other, and to eat healthy and get plenty of exercise. Tate grew up in Tennessee and attended the University of Notre Dame where he was a unanimous All-America selection in 2009 and also played baseball. He recalled for the children how he was required by his parents to complete his homework each day and maintain good grades before he could participate in sports.

Tate signed and presented Syre with its own “12th Man” Flag to hang in the school.

The Seahawks will visit Brookside Elementary in Lake Forest Park next month.

Letter to the Editor: Glad for the information at the town hall meeting on SPU Water in Shoreline

To the Editor:

We have a lot of questions about Shoreline Proposition 1 to buy the water portion of Seattle Public Utilities.  We have wondered about the costs needed to build a brand new infrastructure, hire a whole new staff to operate the system, create a maintenance program, build a reservoir and/or back-up system, buy sources of water, cover emergencies, lay pipes, buy the system from SPU, and on and on.  It has seemed to us that it’s too good to be true that costs for water will be less or no higher than they are now, should voters give the City of Shoreline permission to buy SPU.  Because of our concerns, we were very glad that there was a Town Hall meeting to look at this issue.  It was a great meeting. There were representatives from Seattle Public Utilities, Shoreline Water District, and Ronald Wastewater District.  It was government at its best. With the great exchange of information that occurred, it felt much like a partnership between those of us wondering about Proposition 1 and the government entities that serve us.

Unfortunately there was no one from the Shoreline City Council or any Shoreline City staff members at the Town Hall meeting.  One has to wonder why the City decided not to participate if the other three organizations were all able to send representatives.  It would have been nice to have more information to allay the concerns of those of us who continue to think the City plan has not answered key questions and isn’t solid.

At any rate, we learned a lot on Monday night from the entities that did participate and were very glad for the opportunity to do so.

Shorewood girls soccer scores with 49 seconds left to win the game

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

From Coach Bill Wilkins

Thankfully Wednesday night was another beautiful fall night for the Shorewood girls soccer game as Shorewood celebrated Senior night against Mountlake Terrace in the final league match of the season.

Each Shorewood Senior wrote a special note to their parents, most of which thanked them for their efforts and support in playing. We also had a special guest appearance by former head coach Nathan Davis and his beautiful six month old daughter Madeline prior to the match.

It took 27 minutes before Allison Lorraine dribbled through three Shorewood defenders and finished a near post shot for the only goal of the first half.  The second half opened with Shorewood starting to put more pressure on the Terrace goal, but it took until the 74th minute before Senior Bailey Wilson scored from a corner kick by Senior Gabby Fortes.

It appeared the game might end in a tie, but Gabby was able to feed a ball from right to left to Elise Rosenfeld who finished a shot into the right side net with 49 seconds left and made Senior night a special memory.

Mountlake Terrace had Amanda Aversano in goal and Shorewood had Ashley Swan and Ashley Garay cover the nets.  Shorewood finished the regular season 6-6-4 and 5-6-2 in league.  Mountlake Terrace finished 4--11-1 for the season and 3-10 in league.

The Dolphin Men’s Soccer team took on Whatcom Community College Wednesday at Dolphin Field and was able to pull off their first tie. This is a step in the right direction for the Dolphin team that has come out on the losing side in every game prior.

SCC forward Tsubasa Takahashi opened up the game with a breakaway goal 20 minutes into the game. Whatcom struggled in the first half continually hitting the goal posts and could not counter the goal by Takahashi.

Opening the second half Whatcom came out with significant energy. There were Whatcom’s Davis Strawn scored off of a foul kick on the sideline from his teammate Ryo Matsubara. The momentum continued and in the 85th minute Daniel Pinkerton of Whatcom scored on a breakaway.

SCC did not give up hope and in the 87th minute Javier Perez scored a goal assisted by Victor Labarthe. Both teams continued to battle in the last few minutes of play but were unable to convert and the game ended in a tie 2-2.

Shoreline Men’s Soccer now has a record of 0-13-1 ending their prior losing streak. WCC picks up their first conference tie and now has a record of 6-4-2. SCC Men’s Soccer will go to Edmonds Community College for their next game on Saturday, October 27th at 2:15pm, directly following the SCC Women’s Soccer game against Edmonds.

Shoreline Community College women's soccer drops 2-1 to Whatcom Community College

Wednesday at Shoreline Field the Shoreline Community College women's soccer team battled hard. It was back and forth on the field but Whatcom Community College had a push in the last five minutes of play and pulled off a 2-1 finish over Shoreline Community College.

At the end of the first half the score was 0-0 and both teams were fighting strong. When the second half started you could tell they were determined to score and help to secure their team in the playoffs.

Halfway through the second half Shoreline's Rebekah Hansen went down in the box by a foul on Whatcom's goalie Emily Zimmerman. This gave Sophomore Sara Gilmore a chance to start off scoring on a penalty kick. Gilmore was able to convert with ease.

It looked as SCC women's soccer was going to end with a 1-0 victory but Whatcom was given a surge of energy after a controversial goal that bounced off of the cross-bar and across the goal line. Just two minutes later Whatcom scored again and secured the victory.

SCC is now 5-3-3 in conference and looks to stay in 4th place in the region. WCC is now 7-1-4 and looks to hold on to the conference 2nd place. The SCC Women's Soccer team will face Green River on Monday, October 29th at Dolphin Field at 1pm per a make-up game.
