accreditation evaluators visit at Shoreline Community College.

Shoreline Community College does a terrific job in many areas and has opportunities for improvement in others, according to an initial verbal report from a team of accreditation evaluators.

“Today Shoreline Community College concluded a full-scale accreditation visit from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and I am very pleased that the visit was a success,” Shoreline President Lee Lambert said on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. “Although the final verdict from today's visit will not be official until the early part of the new year, I am confident the college demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning and a willingness to continue improving its efforts toward mission fulfillment.”

The evaluators were impressed at how well the college stayed focused on students despite severe reductions in state funding over recent years. The strong spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship by the workforce programs, generally referred to as professional-technical programs, was also called out as a strength that led to significant community engagement and economic development. The evaluators lauded the physical campus, its upkeep and the environment it presents for learning.

The overall financial health and stewardship of the college was also commended. Shoreline recently adopted a set of reserve policies designed help sustain the college despite uncertain economic conditions. The Board of Trustees’ focus on planning for the future was notable, the evaluators said. And, Shoreline was commended for the actual report submitted the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and reviewed by the evaluators.

“The evaluators also saw areas where we can improve,” Lambert said. “That’s OK; we are always working hard to get better and we welcome their perspective.”

SCC Men's Soccer on the bad end of 10-1 score

scored SCC’s only goal Vs. Chemeketa CC
By Douglas Palmer

The Shoreline Community College Men's Soccer Team was pounded on Saturday at #5 Chemeketa Community College in Salem, OR, as the Storm put a 10-1 score on the Dolphins in the worst defeat for SCC this season.

CCC only led at 3-1 at halftime, as SCC Owusu Fordjour's goal at the 41 minute mark gave the Dolphins hope of getting back into the match, but Chemeketa's Wyatt Brown scored four straight goals in a 15 minute span early in the second half to push CCC's led to 7-1 and the continued the habit of the Dolphins giving up several goals in a short period of time in the 2nd half.

Alpacas at the Market
It's hard to resist their sweet faces and gentle spirits -- the alpacas are back this Sunday! And Pam Wilmot will have an irresistible selection of yarns and rovings for knitters, spinners, and felters.

It's the time of year when you can shop for pumpkins, squash, potatoes, braising greens and root veggies at the same time you'll find heirloom tomatoes, salad greens, pluots, pears and stone fruit. Try a different type of apple this week, stock up on jams, honey, coffee and tea.

  • Pumpkin
  • Death by Chocolate
  • Coconut Mango
  • Salted Caramel
  • New York

Seattle Opera Introduces Audio-Described Performances for Visually-Impaired Patrons

Headsets with Description Available October 14, 2012; January 13, February 24, May 12, 2013

Beginning with next month’s production of Fidelio, Seattle Opera will now offer live audio description of performances for patrons with visual impairments at select Sunday matinees throughout the 2012/13 season.  Performances will be described at the 2 p.m. matinees on October 14, 2012 (Beethoven’s Fidelio); January 13, 2013 (Rossini’s La Cenerentola); February 24, 2013 (Puccini’s La bohème); and May 12, 2013 (Poulenc’s La voix humaine with Puccini’s Suor Angelica).

This new service, provided at no additional cost to ticket-holders, is designed to enhance the opera-going experience for patrons by providing verbal information about the opera’s setting, scenery, costumes, onstage action, and more. Seattle Opera has worked in consultation with the Washington Council for the Blind and Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences to develop the program.

Patrons can request an audio-description headset from the assistance booth, around the corner from coat check, located on the main entry level of McCaw Hall.  Headsets will be distributed free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Participating patrons must leave an ID in exchange for the headset.

A member of Seattle Opera’s Education staff will narrate the live description, beginning 10 minutes prior to curtain.  This early start will allow patrons to become familiar and resolve any issues with their ear bud, while offering the narrator a chance to make introductory remarks about the production before the curtain rises.

During the performance, descriptions will be carefully timed so as not to interfere with patrons’ enjoyment of the music, and will continue briefly at the beginning and conclusion of the intermission.  Transmissions to ear buds will not disturb non-participating patrons sitting nearby.

To find out more, contact the Seattle Opera Box Office at 206-389-7676, or email .  Complete accessibility information for Seattle Opera is available on their website

Letter to the Editor: Water should not be taxed

To the Editor:

Sometimes a message is confusing. Take Proposition 1 Shoreline…The SPU Aquisition.
The real question is what we value as citizens of our city.

Thirty years ago voters in this state decided it was not appropriate to tax food (too regressive!) as food is a basic need.  Water is also a basic need, a need to survive, and to tax it is a very regressive tax.

The real question that should be on the November 6th ballot: Do you approve of the City of Shoreline being in the business of providing and taxing water?

Mayor McGlashan stated at a City Council meeting, that to break the ballot issue into two questions might confuse the voters, and we might vote the wrong way.  We can elevate ourselves and our city to a higher level.

To care for the citizens of our city in a better way, we should support the purchase of our water system by a public utility like Shoreline Water District, which does not tax water.

This was the direction the city was taking in 2006, and subsequently abandoned when a new City Manager was hired.  At that point, a decision was made to pursue the purchase of the water system by the City of Shoreline; the water system thus becomes a taxing vehicle for the city.

Whether our taxes go to Seattle or Shoreline is a false choice that does not improve the quality of life in our city. We need a public utility that delivers, tax free and at the lowest possible cost, that which we all require to survive: WATER.

Taxing something that is needed to survive is morally wrong. As a result, I cannot support Proposition 1. If we start down this path, the bus gets rolling and is very hard to stop.

Karen Easterly-Behrens

Shorecrest wins the Rotary Cup

Overjoyed Shorecrest students show their school spirit

On a perfect night out for football, and in front of a spirited overflow crowd, Keegan Small's two TD runs in the final quarter powered the Shorecrest Scots past the Shorewood T-Birds in the Rotary Cup Game, 23-17.

The win marked the ninth straight win for the Scots over the T-Birds, who now lead the series 24-10.

For a while it looked like this would be the T-Birds' year, as they led at the half, 10-7.  They extended their lead to 17-7 on a 40 yard blast by Levy Diaz with 7:34 to play in the third quarter.

But the Scots responded by scoring the game's final sixteen points.

Sam Schober's 32 yard field goal with 3 minutes to play in the third cut the T-Birds' lead to 17-10.

Shorecrest tied the game on Small's first TD, a 3-yard run with six minutes to play.  The score was set up by punter Schober's 13 yard run on fourth-and-eleven near mid-field, when he rolled out to his right (as if to kick the ball rugby style) and just kept on going until he'd gotten the first down.

On their next possession, Shorewood was stopped on fourth-and-short in their own territory.

Shorecrest responded by marching the ball down the field, with Small shedding tired T-Bird tacklers on his way to the end zone from 19 yards out with 2:39 to play.

Shorewood's final chance was thwarted when Nick Hendricks intercepted an Aaron Miller pass near midfield with just over a minute to play in the game.

Are you registered to vote? Check here

By Diane Hettrick

The Washington State Secretary of State's office has a nifty website that allows you to verify your voter registration, change your address, look at candidates and ballot measures, check out your elected officials, and find where to return your ballot.

Remember that all balloting in Washington state is now by mail. You can fill out and return your ballot as soon as you get it, or wait until closer to the election day deadline of November 6, 2012.

Go to the website and enter your first name, last name, and date of birth. That's all you need.

You can only register online today but it's too late to mail in your changes, which needed to be postmarked by Saturday. Come Monday, you need to go in person to Renton to register, if online didn't work. Here are the details, in a story by Evan Smith.

The site is currently not displaying places to drop completed ballots; however our location is by City Hall in Lake Forest Park, 17171 Bothell Way NE, 98155.

The exception to the all-mail ballots are the accessible voting locations. Evan Smith wrote a story about those for the primary election. See it here.

If you still have questions, here is the contact info for the King County Elections:

Phone: 206-296-8683

When you are viewing elections returns, remember that our state legislative districts cross county lines into Snohomish County. There have been many elections where the candidate won King and lost Snohomish. You need to count them together - or check the ShorelineAreaNews,

Ronald Wastewater Commission appoints Richard Matthews to open seat

From Ronald Wastewater

For several years, the Board of Commissioners of Ronald Wastewater District has considered expanding the Board from three to five commissioners.  Under state law, special purpose districts with over 10,000 customers may be governed by a board of up to five commissioners.  Ronald Wastewater District has over 16,000 customers.   In May of 2012, the Board of Commissioners of Ronald Wastewater District voted to expand the number of commissioners from three to five.  A majority of the current commissioners believed that expanding the Board would help the District outreach to and communicate with its rate payers, as well as attend industry, regional utility and community meetings.

The District notified all residential customers of the opportunity to serve and the Board received 21 applications for the new commissioner positions:  4 women and 17 men.  The current Board was impressed with the quality and experience of the 21 applicants.  At a special meeting on July 23, the Board made the difficult decisions to narrow the pool of applicants to 5 finalists.  The current commissioners interviewed the finalists in open meetings on July 23 and July 25.  Chris Eggen, speaking personally and not on behalf of the City of Shoreline, recently complimented Ronald Wastewater District for its open and transparent commissioner selection process.

At the Friday, August 3, 2012 meeting, the Board of Commissioners voted to appoint Richard Matthews to one of the new commissioner positions.  The appointment vote was three in favor with one abstention.

Mr. Matthews, who was born and raised in Shoreline, Washington, has practiced law in the Seattle area since 1973.  His areas of practice are real estate and land development law; business and estate planning and counseling, and corporate finance.  Mr Matthews has served on or chaired several local and and state bar committees.  He is the past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of Shoreline Breakfast Rotary Club; member of the Presbyterian Retirement Communities (PRCN) which owns and operates three CCRCs (continuing care retirement communities); a member of the Inglewood Golf Club; a founding board member and office of Forward Shoreline (a local economic development group); and is an active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Shoreline.

Mr. Matthews was recognized by Seattle Metropolitan Magazine as one of King County’s “Top Lawyers 2010” and “Best Wealth Managers for 2011”.  He has been awarded an “AV” Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubbell®.  This rating is given to attorneys who demonstrate the highest ethical standards and professional ability.

This special event is held on the Sunday on or near the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi – the patron saint of animals – which is Oct. 4.

St. Francis is identified as a humble servant of Christ who took a vow of poverty and is known for his great love and concern for all of God’s creatures.

“It is fitting that on his feast day we would give God thanks for the blessings of His creation,” said Fr. Harley Crain, rector.
“This is a time when we can pray for the care and safety of God’s creatures, who are a gift from God. We recognize the blessings that our animals bring to us and pray for God’s care over His creatures.”

The day is a time to celebrate not only our pets but also “the Lord’s magnificent handiwork,” Fr. Crain added.

St. Barnabas Anglican Church is located at 2340 N. 155th St. For more information, please call Fr. Crain at 206-365-6565.

Walkathon and Car Show postponed until May 5, 2013

From Monty K Reed 206-250-5639, They Shall Walk

They Shall Walk’s Walkathon, Rollathon and Car Show scheduled for this Sunday October 7, 2012 9am-4pm has been postponed until May 5, 2013.

The primary concern that brought this decision about was the incredible increase in event insurance expense to meet the coverage needs of Sears corporate office. While the insurance requirement of Sears has not changed, the number of insurance companies capable of writing this type of insurance in Washington has. The insurance company previously used for events at Sears no longer does business in Washington.

They Shall Walk would like to thank Sears in Shoreline and Collins Insurance for their hard work to find solutions for the October event and look forward to the May 5 event at the Sears Plaza. They Shall Walk would also like to thank supporters, friends and volunteers and look forward to a fabulous event on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

They Shall Walk has developed the LIFESUIT robotic exoskeleton creating an industry
of robotic therapy devices while mentoring students from area high schools and colleges as interns. Students have hands on experience in the lab building robotic systems that improve the quality of life while learning real life skills that they will use on the job after graduation.
