From our friends at ParentMap come these cute baby costumes for the do-it-yourselfer at Halloween.

A Leggy Idea
What’s cuter than a set of roly-poly baby legs? Four sets! The crafty mind behind Taylor Made created this octopus costume using a onesie, leggings, and an extra-large t-shirt for material for the legs. After tie-dyeing all of the pieces, Momma Taylor made six sock-shaped legs for the leg “skirt.” Your under-the-sea tot will love playing with the plush legs. Head over to the full blog for DIY tips and more octo-inspiration!

Light Rail 185th station citizen committee forming

Standing room only in the City Council Chambers
for the joint meeting of Echo Lake, North City, and Meridian Park
neighborhood associations

By Dale Lydin, Echo Lake Neighborhood Association Board Member

Last Tuesday evening, over 80 residents of the Echo Lake, North City and Meridian Park neighborhoods heard Sound Transit and City of Shoreline staff discuss the current state of planning, and future schedule for the proposed Light Rail station on the east side of I-5 at 185th Street.  This location is at the intersection of these three neighborhoods.

In sections of the LINK Light Rail system that have been completed, the stations have been a catalyst for redevelopment and growth. Multi-story, residential and commercial buildings and parking structures have replaced single family homes.

We understand that this will likely happen in Shoreline too and to help plan for and manage these changes, a group of residents from the three neighborhoods are forming the "Light Rail 185th Station Citizen Committee”.

This committee will strive to educate and give voice to everyone in our community in the hopes that the station will improve our communal identity. We will stay connected to the Sound Transit and City of Shoreline planning and design efforts, and make sure that the needs of our neighborhoods are integrated in the final plans.

The committee is just forming and invites anyone who lives in the Echo Lake, North City, or Meridian Park neighborhoods to participate. Go to the Echo Lake website to leave a message containing your name and contact information, including e-mail address, phone number, neighborhood, and address (if you want to receive written communications from your neighborhood).

Seattle Times endorses Kagi and Ryu in 32nd Legislative District

Our news partner, The Seattle Times, has endorsed incumbent Democratic 32nd District State Reps. Ruth Kagi and Cindy Ryu for re-election.

The 32nd District includes Shoreline, part of northwest Seattle, Woodway, south Edmonds, nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, Lynnwood and part of Mountlake Terrace.

In a Sunday editorial, the Times cited Kagi for her work to protect children and her work to improve truck safety in the most recent of her seven terms in the Legislature.

The Times said that Ryu had had a good first term in the Legislature, particularly on transportation, economic-development and local-government issues. The Times added that Ryu's Republican opponent, Randy Hayden of Edmonds, is not prepared to replace her.

Ryu faces Hayden and Kagi faces Republican Robert Reedy of Mountlake Terrace in the Nov. 6 general election.

County Council restores recycling operations at Shoreline Transfer Station

Shoreline Transfer Station
Shoreline Area News photo

On Monday, the Metropolitan King County Council approved legislation that will allow recycling operations to resume at several transfer stations across King County in 2013, including the Shoreline transfer station and the Houghton transfer station in Kirkland.

“I heard from many residents in my district who valued recycling, and were concerned about the closure of this service at County facilities,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, who represents Shoreline and part of Kirkland. “After listening to their concerns, I worked with Executive Constantine to bring recycling back.”

Recycling services at Shoreline, Houghton, and other King County transfer stations were shut down in February as part of an effort to reduce costs. The Council’s action today to reopen recycling at its transfer stations responds to residents who expressed concerns about not providing recycling services.

The legislation approved by the Council today adopts a commercial solid waste disposal rate through 2014 of $120.17 per ton. The new rate is an increase from the current $109 per ton rate. It is estimated that new rate will cost the average single-family household an additional 65 cents per month, resulting in a 3.5% increase in the average monthly residential solid waste bill.

Washington SAT scores are the highest in the nation

According to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington students’ combined average score on the SAT (1545) is the highest in the nation — tied with Vermont — among states in which at least 45 percent of the eligible students took the test, according to figures released by the College Board today. The percentage of students tested is significant because generally the more students who test, the lower the overall average score. However, Washington has bucked that trend for the past decade.

Washington again had the nation’s highest score in math (528), was tied for second in writing (500) and was third in reading (517) among states with a participation rate of 45 percent or more. The ranking is based on students taking the SAT who were 12th graders in the Class of 2012.

“Students who take the SAT have their eye on attending college,” State Superintendent Randy Dorn said. “To have that many high school students do that well on the test says a lot about the preparation they’re getting in school.”

2nd Annual 4-Corners BrewFest another huge success

Sunday, September 23, 2012

By Lisa Surowiec

For the second straight year, the 4-Corners BrewFest was nothing short of amazing.  This year's theme - Bluegrass and Brews - and the complimentary pretzel necklaces also contributed to the success.

Quite simply, the weather was perfect, the music was lively, the crowd was festive, and the beer was tasty.

Most importantly, 4-Corners BrewFest raised nearly $10,000 for New Beginnings - a battered women's shelter - and the four neighborhood associations that comprise 4-Corners.Org: the Richmond Beach Community Association, the Hillwood Community Network, the Richmond Highlands Neighborhood Association, and the Innis Arden Activities Committee.  Additionally, it provided a great excuse to get together, meet your neighbors, and have a good time on a Saturday afternoon.

All told, nineteen brewers - from Everett to Escondido - served the thirst throng on the Innis Arden Clubhouse's back patio some of the best craft beer on the planet.

Returning brewers from 2011 included American Brewing and Gallagher's Where-U-Brew (Edmonds), Big E Ales (Lynnwood), Naked City Brewing, Fremont Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, Lantern Brewing, and Georgetown Brewing (Seattle), Diamond Knot Craft Brewing (Mukilteo) and Silver City Brewing (Silverdale).  This year also featured a number of new faces, including Lazy Boy Brewing (Everett), Brickyard Brewing and Twelve Bar Brews (Woodinville), 192 Brewing (Kenmore), Elliott Bay Brewing, Hilliard's Beer, and Pike Brewing (Seattle), 7 Seas Brewing (Gig Harbor).

And as luck would have it, a late cancellation allowed an appearance from Stone Brewing (Escondido, CA) which has twice been named 'The Alltime Top Brewery on Planet Earth' by Beer Advocate magazine.

Food was provided by Richmond Beach's own Full Moon Thai Cuisine, Flying Dragon, and Gino's Pizza and Pasta and supplemented by grilled bratwurst and sausages from RBCA former president and resident grill master Ed Adams. And a collection of bluegrass players from in and around Shoreline kept everybody's toes tapping in between tastings.

2012 also featured some of the closest competitions when it came time to hand out the hardware.  Gig Harbor's 7 Seas Brewing took home the trophy for the fastest blown keg with its Balz Deep Double IPA. The brewers that poured the most beer included American Brewing, Fremont Brewing, and Big E Ales. And in the 'People's Choice' competition the Golden Growler was awarded to Gallagher's Orange Mango IPA, which narrowly edged last year's winner Big E Ales' Blackberry Ale and Fremont Brewing's Dark Star Imperial Stout.  Other crowd favorites included offerings from Lantern Brewing, Emerald City Beer Company, Hilliard's Beer, and Georgetown Brewing.

In the end, however, one of the best things about 4-Corners BrewFest was that it is a true collaboration between all four neighborhoods. The 2012 BrewFest Committee included Chip Erickson and Lisa Surowiec (Richmond Highlands), Pete Bouchard and Afia Menke (Hillwood), Bill Montero (Innis Arden), and Steve Kerr (Richmond Beach). All of them put in countless hours to pull it off. Each neighborhood also contributed volunteers on the day of the event. Lastly, 4-Corners BrewFest also received generous support from local business Whidbey Island Bank, CleanScapes, and Beach House Greetings.

Of course it's never too early to start thinking about next year. A 3rd Annual 4-Corners BrewFest is already in the works for 2013 on Saturday, August 10th. If you'd like to be part of the 2013 committee, feel free to contact Steve Kerr. We're always looking for fun people who don't mind rolling up their sleeves (and enjoying a cold one after a job well done).

State Patrol to ticket aggressive drivers in King County

It can be a real headache for motorists in King County when a road is blocked because of a commercial motor vehicle collision. Collision data reveals that the majority of these crashes are caused by the automobile, not the truck.

Starting on September 24, 2012, WSP will conduct a week-long Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) emphasis in King County to change driver behavior around big trucks and try and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by these collisions.

The upcoming emphasis is part of a TACT Project that has WSP troopers and local and county law enforcement conducting four week-long emphases during the next nine months in King County.

“Motorists who drive recklessly, or are unsafe around these big rigs, are asking for trouble,” said Chief John R. Batiste, Washington State Patrol.  “These trucks are unforgiving in the amount damage they do to a car in a collision.”

The goal of this TACT Project is to change driver behavior when operating around commercial motor vehicles, to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities, and to increase public awareness about unsafe driving behaviors around commercial vehicles (i.e. cutting off trucks, tailgating, failure to yield right of way, speeding, and aggressive driving).

Batiste made clear that TACT stands for Ticketing Aggressive Cars AND Trucks.

“Troopers and other police officers assigned to TACT are not just after the car drivers,” he said. “Officers will also look for truck drivers who don’t share the road”.

Law Enforcement will also be partnering with the Washington Trucking Association (WTA) during the last three week-long TACT emphases.  WTA will provide a truck and driver during the emphases with an officer riding in the vehicle spotting violations that happen around the vehicle.  Along with the truck, the WSP aircraft will take to the sky looking for unsafe drivers around trucks.

Most of the collisions involving commercial motor vehicles that occur in King County happen on the interstate and state routes.  Officers will patrol I-5 from Seattle to Federal Way, I-90 from Seattle to North Bend, I-405 from Bellevue to Tukwila, SR-167 from SR-18 to I-405, and SR-18 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the times most collisions occur.  The enforcement dates are September 24 – 28, 2012, December 10 – 14, 2012, March 11-13, 2013, and May 20 – 24, 2013.

This TACT Project is a grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.  The grant is part of a program directed by Congress in 2004 to educate passenger car drivers on how to share the roadway safely with commercial vehicles.

Shoreline Community College home games available "online"

Shoreline Community College Dolphins

The Shoreline Community College Athletic Department, in a working relationship with FX Video, has now placed all SCC “Home” games live online. You can watch the Dolphins home games online at “FX_Video” and can watch copies of the games on the site as well.

The SCC Athletic Department also offers games on its “YouTube Site” as well, plus on YouTube, you can find copies of past away games when available.

SCC Athletic Director Doug Palmer

Said SCC Athletic Director Doug Palmer: “The relationship with FX Video to show our home games live is outstanding, it allows parents, friends and fans from around the world to watch our games from the comfort of their homes or anywhere they have their computer, laptop, IPAD or phone. Plus, with the use of YouTube, our recruits, four year college coaches and again, fans, family and friends can watch our games at their convenience. Since we launched our YouTube site last year, over 12,500 individuals have viewed our games, it has been a great help to our student-athletes being recruited by four year colleges and for future Dolphins to follow our program and teams.

Palmer continued: “We are one of the most social media friendly athletic departments at the community college level in the country and it has helped us build a fan base that in some cases; the fan has never seen us play live or stepped on our campus. Not perfect or what we really want, but it spreads the word of our department and college to places we would not reach otherwise”.

Currently, SCC games now available on YouTube are SCC Volleyball Vs Northwest Indian College and SCC Men’s and Women’s Soccer Vs Trinity Lutheran College. More games will be available shortly and the process of live games going to the YouTube site faster is in the works.

The next FX Video broadcast of a SCC Game will be Friday night, September 28 at 7:00pm, as the Lady Dolphin Volleyball Team plays arch rival, Edmonds Community College in the SCC Gym. For sport schedules and more information, go to the SCC Athletic Website.

On Saturday afternoon, September 15th, hundreds of people poured into Ronald Bog Park on N 175th St. After parking at Meridian Park Elementary, festival attendees walked the partial block to the park entrance and were delighted by the sight of a colorful giant floating turtle clambering off a dock, amazed by fluttering iridescent wings affixed to the Shoreline Ponies sculpture, and charmed by the brightly striped tree socks made by local knitters.

Welcomed by the Meridian Park Neighborhood Association tent, visitors then began their self-guided park tour. By the parking lot, a clay turtle mosaic was strung between two trees. This piece was made in partnership with Shoreline Children's Center, and Anne and Paddy Guthrie – local turtle aficionados.

Moving further into the park, jellyfish costumes and Marshmallow Lane beckoned those who wanted to play. Karla Johnson, children's storyteller and writer, captivated young people with fun and games at this station.

Next stop was the labyrinth walk created with braided cloth rope also made by Shoreline Children's Center youth and supplemented with an assortment of painted sticks. Adventurous kids donned jellyfish costumes and raced around the twisting labyrinth path.

A step beyond, beautifully subtle, painted leaves swayed with the breeze. The piece, Dripline, was handpainted the day before by The Unearth Collective, one of the sculptors featured in the festival.

An homage to the lake's history as a Cranberry Bog

Moving down towards the water's edge, one encountered three shapely hypertufa vessels filled with water and floating cranberries, created by Mary Coss – an homage to the area's past as a cranberry bog. Also floating was Coss's giant seashell, entitled Blood and Water, anchored near shore with a soundtrack that alternately soothed and provoked thoughts of family and times past.

Fly By Night by Carol Milne
While at the shelter one could look across the lake and make out the shape and color of Carol Milne's Fly by Night – Red Dragonfly piece. This piece has the added advantage of being lit by night, adding an extra dimension to the sculpture exhibition that continued for another week.

Art-making demonstrations included: Plein Air painters Ann Blanch, Marsha Lippert, Billie Torbenson, Chinese Painting by Fred Wong of Shoreline-LFP Arts Council, and Fiber Artist Meghan Lancaster.

Hula-Hooper twins Dani and Desiree captivated the crowd with lessons and lent out dozens of hoops in early afternoon.
The Children's Art Shelter bustled with activity

The Children's Art Shelter at Ronald Bog was overflowing with art projects including nature crowns and bubble painting. Andy Beveroth, lead art instigator danced around, supporting children and parents with their creative expression. Handmade flags made by Spartan Rec summer campers fluttered over the proceedings.

Members of the Duwamish Tribe sang and danced

Mid-afternoon brought the Duwamish Tribe's beautiful and moving culture-sharing with “Singing Feet”, an award winning multi-generational traditional dance, drum, and singing group. This was followed by a historical talk about the area by Vicki Stiles, Director, Shoreline Historical Museum. For plant and tree lovers, Dick Decker, Boni Biery, and Dick Nicholson offered tours and native plantings information.

There was music everywhere

And then there was the music – so engaging! Elena DeLisle Perry organized a wonderful selection of acoustic “old-time” music, bluegrass, jazz, country, Creole/Cajun, Renaissance, classical, and the music of Tierra Caliente, Mexico. that fit so well with the park theme. Locals Ed Goldstick, The Peturka Family Band, WhistlePig, and Brittain Barber, and others played in four tents around the park for 3 ½ hours. Along the way there was a Family Dance in the meadow called by Amy Carroll.
