Piano Time 2012 Performances Friday and Saturday, August 10th, 11th

Friday Noon Brick Road Performance

There are two chances this week to catch scheduled performances on the Piano Time pianos.  On Friday, August 10th, take your lunch out to the Park at Town Center at N 175th and Midvale and listen to Karin Kajita on piano with Tony Grasso on trumpet playing some lively jazz. They’ll be entertaining on the Red Brick Road just north of Walgreens from noon-1:30 p.m.  This bright yellow piano painted by Shoreline artist Kim Bateman is called the Werner Café Piano so having lunch while you listen is a perfect accompaniment.

Kajita is an accomplished jazz musician trained in performance and arranging at the University of Washington. She is the leader of the Karin Kajita Jazz Quintet and performs at local festivals including Bumbershoot, the Shoreline Arts Festival and the Evergreen State Fair.  She has performed throughout the United States, in Japan and on European and Alaskan cruise lines.  Currently she can be heard on a regular basis around Seattle at such venues as the 1201 3rd Avenue Building and the Sorrento Hotel.  In addition to heading her own band, Kajita also plays with the Hammon/Esvelt Quintet and Finn Hill Jazz, and accompanies jazz vocalists Emily McIntosh and Kay Bailey.

Following graduation from the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia, Tony Grasso played throughout the country with the US Navy Band.  He has been a regular performer with various groups at Bumbershoot, the Folklife Festival and Earshot Jazz Festival.  Tony is the leader of “The Tony Grasso Saxophone Quartet?” which features compositions by Tony that sound like a form of chamber free jazz lined with layered contrapuntal patters and splintered sharp fragments of sound.

Grasso is a member of the Manghis Khan band playing a fusion of Latin and African music, as well as a member of the Karin Kajita Jazz Quintet, which performs primarily hard bop and Karin’s originals.  This is a not-to-be missed noontime concert!

Saturday Happy Hour at the Jazzy Jive Piano

The next day, Saturday, August 11th from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m, Peter Vukmirovic Stevens, an award- winning composer and pianist from Seattle, will be playing on the Jazzy Jive piano, CJ Swanson, artist, on Aurora Ave N at N 182nd Street near Darrell’s Tavern. Stevens is co-founder and a member of the Seattle Pianist Collective, a group that performs adventurous and unique recitals featuring well known and lesser known works by composers from the 19th through 21st centuries.

Stevens’ own compositions include works ranging from solo piano to symphony orchestra and reflect influences from contemporary art, literature, extensive travels and ethnomusicology. He has also written for and collaborated with a wide variety of ensembles, performers and regional television projects. In his spare time he is an avid traveler to far away and remote places. Stop by and listen for a while to hear these places reflected in his eclectic musical selections.

Did you miss the opening Arts al Fresco event on Thursday?  The performance schedule and piano location map is on the City’s website.

Piano Time is a City of Shoreline project, funded in part by a grant from 4Culture and the collaboration of Prosser Piano and other area businesses.

Neighbors in the vicinity of Aldercrest Annex in the 2800 block of NE 200th, heard what they thought were fireworks early Wednesday evening, August 8, 2012, just before smoke and fire near the building brought out the four fire departments of Shoreline, Northshore, Bothell, and Snohomish county.

According to first reports, the fire started in a mattress outside the building, then spread to the inside of the empty building, which belongs to the Shoreline School District and was formerly Kellogg Middle School.

A ladder truck was on the south side of the fire to keep it from spreading to the gym.

Shoreline and King County Fire Investigation units were still on the scene at 9:30pm, determining the cause of the blaze.

Damages are estimated to be around $20,000 dollars. There were no injuries during the incident.

Elected leaders thank King County voters for passage of Children and Family Justice Center levy

King County leaders thanked the voters of King County for approving King County Proposition 1, the Children and Family Justice Center levy, which in the latest tally had a 53.41 percent yes vote.

“This is for the children and families of King County,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “In times of crisis they need and deserve safety, dignity, and an opportunity for redemption. This center will finally help make that possible. This vote creates a better future that provides hope to at-risk youth and families in crisis and fair, efficient, and equitable justice for all.

Metropolitan King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson, prime sponsor of placing King County Proposition No. 1 on the ballot, said, “I am grateful to the people of King County for their commitment to justice and our region’s youth. Voters recognized the importance of providing critical infrastructure for our children and families facing crisis.
”With the success of Proposition 1, we can move forward with a new Children and Family Services Center that serves families better, promotes public safety, and reflects our community’s commitment to a fair and accessible justice system for everyone,” added Ferguson.

King County Superior Court Presiding Judge Richard McDermott said, “It is enormously gratifying to see, in these recessionary times, that the citizens of King County have voted to approve Proposition 1. By approving this new property tax, they have confirmed the importance of assisting our children and families in need. The King County Superior Court thanks you for your support and promises to work closely with the other branches of government to construct a Children and Family Justice Center where justice can truly flourish.”

Democrat vs. Democrat general elections coming in 46th Legislative District

By Evan Smith

The 46th Legislative District apparently will have Democrat vs. Democrat general elections for both House seats in November after results of the Tuesday primary.

In the one contested primary, Democrats Jesslyn Farrell and Sarajane Siegfriedt led two other Democrats, a Republican and an independent to advance to the general election.

Farrell led the primary in votes counted through Tuesday night with 28 percent of the primary votes to Siegfriedt’s 22 percent, Republican Scott Hodges’ 19 percent, Democrat Shelley Crocker's 17 percent, Democrat Dusty Hoerler’s 12 percent and independent Stan Lippmann’s 2 percent.

Farrell and Siegfriedt will run off for the position now held by retiring Democratic State Rep. Phyllis Kenny.

The District includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and northeast Seattle.

Incumbent Democratic State Rep. Gerry Pollet and Democratic challenger Sylvester Cann were the only candidates on the primary ballot for the position that Pollet holds by appointment. They will meet again in November.

Incumbent Democratic State Sen. David Frockt was unopposed in the primary and will be unopposed again in November.

Book review by Aarene Storms: Between

Between  by Jessica Warman
When pretty, popular, wealthy Elizabeth Valchar wakes up on the morning of her 18th birthday, she's dead.

Nobody knows exactly what happened, including Liz herself, who is stuck "between" life and death, haunting her hometown, her friends and her family, seeking answers.  The only person who can see Liz is Alex...and he's dead too.

The narrative gradually unwinds clue after tiny clue, drawing the reader deeper into the complex life of a pretty girl who apparently had it all.  Liz is not a sympathetic character, especially at first.  Yet, as the story delves deeper into the past, Liz  learns that her life was not as perfect as she thought it was...and that her accidental death on the family yacht might not have been an accident.

The mystery is not perfect--astute readers will figure out the connection between Liz and Alex long before Liz understands it--and there are a few plot holes.  However, the storytelling itself is entrancing.

Mild cussing, sexual situations, underage drinking and drug use.  Recommended for readers 14 to adult.

Election night results

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

There were few surprises in the Tuesday evening election returns as reported by our news partner King 5.

One race that was rather interesting was in our 46th District (Lake Forest Park, Kenmore), where two Democrats will advance to the general election. There are still several days of ballot counting but at this point the leading Republican trails two Democrats.

State House - District 46, Pos. 2

Aug 07, 2012 - 20:56:59

In the 32nd District (Shoreline), Rep. Cindy Ryu had only one challenger, so both will advance to the general. Rep. Ruth Kagi had two challengers;  Robert Reedy will face her in the general.

Shoreline City Council Meeting Monday August 6

Notes from Shoreline City Council Meeting Monday August 6
By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

The Shoreline City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance authorizing the city to acquire and operate the water utility currently owned by Seattle Public Utility (SPU) serving the part of Shoreline on the west side of I-5. The council also directed the city to draw up a ballot measure to be put before the voters on November 6th to authorize the acquisition of Seattle Water Services in Shoreline.

The council members agreed that acquiring the water utility would be beneficial to Shoreline in giving the city local control over rates, maintenance and upgrades. Mayor McGlashan said that Seattle City Council members had acknowledged that SPU Seattle customers' rates would go up if they sold the utility to Shoreline. “SPU is discounting Seattle rate payers now by charging Shoreline extra.” He said the Seattle Mayor has decided that to sell to Shoreline is the right thing to do.

Former councilmember Robert Ransom, who was on the citizen’s steering committee, said “the city has basically no debt and is in excellent financial shape.” And that “the city council should seize the moment, ignore the nay-sayers and approve the ballot item to let the public decide”.

Council member Hall said the city has made many improvements at lower cost by integrating services. “This is going to be a slam dunk for the community. It will save the rate payers money with better water service and it will be integrated with the other utilities.”

BrewFest welcomes new breweries Saturday

Monday, August 6, 2012

New breweries will be represented at the 4-Corners BrewFest this Saturday, August 11, 2012, joining the couple dozen who are happily returning from last year's event. The new ones include 7 Seas, Schooner Exact, and Reuben's Brews. (See previous article on BrewFest).

7 Seas Brewing from Gig Harbor

Formed in 2008 by Travis Guterson and Mike Runion, 7 Seas Brewing is an innovative craft brewery, making audacious, yet technically well-executed beers; utilizing cans rather than bottles; and championing environmental stewardship.

Having survived a fire at their original location which delayed their opening by six months, they now occupy a 3,000 square foot brewing facility superbly located in Gig Harbor, Washington.

Schooner Exact Brewing Company

In 2006, homebrewing pals Marcus Connery and Matt and Heather McClung decided to take their hobby to the next level and go pro. Purchasing a half-barrel system, they began brewing a keg of beer at a time out of an ActivSpace unit under the West Seattle Bridge. Beginning in January 2007, they distributed their beer to restaurants and taprooms all over the city of Seattle.

As demand for their beers increased, the Schooner EXACT founders expanded into a larger, 10 -barrel system. The brewery moved to the South Park neighborhood in early 2009, and to its current SODO location on 1st Avenue in 2010. After Marcus Connery passed the reins of the brewery over to Heather and Matt to pursue the next chapter in his beer adventures by opening a beer broker/ consulting business, Matt and Heather quit their teaching jobs to pursue their brewery dreams full time.

Reuben's Brews
We are a small, family owned and operated brewery located in Ballard in Seattle, WA.  We are opening on Sunday August 5th, 2012!  We will have a cozy taproom where you can meet with friends, sample and learn about our beers, and pick up a growler to enjoy elsewhere!  As a small, craft brewery operating on an artisan scale, we can’t guarantee broad distribution of our truly seasonal brews.  We hope you make the trip often to imbibe our frequently changing brews and become a part of the Reuben’s Brews Family.

About BrewFest
The second annual 4-Corners BrewFest will be held on Saturday, August 11th from 3-7pm on the patio and grass behind the Innis Arden Clubhouse at 1430 NW 188th St.

Aurora complete to 192nd - ribbon cutting ceremony

City Council, City staff cut the ribbon
for completion of the 185-192nd section of Aurora

After a year and a half, construction on Aurora from N 185th to N 192nd Streets is complete.

Improvements to this segment are very similar to the previous miles of the Aurora Corridor Project, and include delineated driveways, wider sidewalks, landscaped center medians with left- and U-turn pockets, and BAT (Business Access and Transit) lanes.

Two features unique to this segment are the rain garden plaza on the southwest corner of Aurora and N 192nd Street and the “green” retaining walls. Beneath the plaza is a major drainage facility to collect stormwater from Aurora and control the flow of water entering nearby Echo Lake.

The “green” retaining walls allow low-maintenance, evergreen and deciduous plant species to grow on and cover the face of the walls.

State and federal grants totaling $10.8 million were recently awarded to the City for the final segment of Aurora, which means the City has reached the minimum funding needed to start construction. At this time it is anticipated that final design and right-of-way certification will be in place by Summer 2012 allowing the project to go out to bid and begin construction in early 2013.

More information about the Aurora Corridor.

The ribbon-cutting was held on the rain garden plaza (storm water control) at the 192nd Street Park and Ride. Steve Gorcester from the Transportation Improvement Board presented a plaque to commemorate this section of the corridor's completion. Russ East, Assistant Regional Administrator for Sno-King Area WSDOT, spoke about the completion and the start of the final section beginning within six months. Mayor Keith McGlashan spoke about the on-going project and plans for the final stretch between 192nd and 205th.

Underwater robot team competed at international student competition

Alex Miller, Nicholas Orndorff, and Clara Orndorff

Recently, a local group of students qualified to compete in an international competition for underwater robots - the the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center’s International ROV Competition. A Remotely Operated Vehicle, or ROV, is a tethered robot used to complete tasks in underwater environments.

The team members are Alex Miller, Nicholas Orndorff, and Clara Orndorff. They live in north Seattle but ran their tests in Shoreline.

"We live near Shoreline and James McCrackin of Shoreline Pool was gracious enough to let us test our ROV in their pool two or three times a week for about three months."

AMNO and CO was the second place winner in the Pacific Northwest Regional competition, which was held on May12th of this year. AMNO and CO accomplished this using an ROV they designed and built over the past year.

Their ROV was called "The Rust Bucket"
Here it navigates the Shoreline Pool

At the International ROV Competition, held June 21-23 in Orlando, Florida, AMNO and CO competed against over thirty of the top teams from MATE’s 21 regional competitions around the world, including teams from the US, the UK, China, Macao, Egypt, Canada, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

"In addition to building our ROV, we made a poster about our ROV, we wrote a technical report, and we prepared an engineering presentation to give to a panel of judges.
"At the international competition in Orlando, Florida, we placed 19th out of 32 teams. We were the smallest team there and one of the youngest as well, so we were really happy with how we did. We've already begun planning for next year's project."

Each year, the MATE ROV competition encourages students to learn and apply science, technology, engineering, and math skills to the competition tasks that simulate real world problems from the ocean workplace. This year, the competition missions focused on the role that ROVs play in assessing World War II shipwrecks and the hazardous fuel oil that they may still contain.

Nicholas launches the Rust Bucket during the
international competition in Florida
During World War II, oil was one of the most important resources, allowing ships and soldiers to travel across the world’s oceans. Because of this, oil tankers were key targets. Many tankers now lie at the bottom of the world’s oceans. It has been almost seventy years for most of sunken ships and as a result, many have decayed. The oil that they may still contain could at any point in time be released to create an enormous environmental disaster. Of over 8,500 oil-bearing shipwrecks, more than 6,300 are from the World War II era. The wrecks of tankers can be found in the world’s oceans, seas, and even the world’s lakes.

Teams will participate in mission tasks, piloting their ROV to assess the condition of a simulated shipwreck and determine if oil is still on board. The teams will then attempt to remove this oil from the wreck to prevent environmental disasters. In addition, they must prepare a technical report describing their ROV, make a presentation to a panel of judges, and create a poster display.

This is the third year that AMNO and CO has participated in the Pacific Northwest Regional ROV Contest, and the first year they attended the MATE International ROV Competition.

The AMNO and CO ROV team is supported by local sponsors including West Marine, Global Diving, and Harris Electric. The team practiced at the Shoreline Pool and fundraised over the summer near Alki Beach in Seattle. Their fundraising covered a large portion of the cost of their ROV.

For more information about the AMNO and CO ROV team, contact themMore information about the MATE ROV competition.

WeatherWatcher: Thunderstorms early Monday morning through Monday afternoon possible

Thunderstorm threat early morning to afternoon Monday August 6, 2012.
Lightning over Kitsap from the Edmonds waterfront.
After having the hottest day Shoreline and Lake Forest Park have seen in two years, topping out at 91.9ºF, we are having a rapid cool down. This cool down will be setting off the possibility of a new round of thunderstorms.

There is an upper level disturbance moving north from California that is setting off some thunderstorms, currently over the state of Oregon right now. This disturbance is expected to move into Western Washington overnight and into the morning.

This is actually fairly common after a heat wave producing high temperatures above the mid 80's followed by a rapid cool down of more than 10 degrees.

If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.  Seek shelter immediately in a fully enclosed vehicle (such as a hard top) or well grounded building.  Never stand under trees or near tall objects during a thunderstorm.

Stay away from all electrical appliances and plumbing fixtures inside the building as well.  It is possible for lightning to bypass grounding circuits and enter a building through the electrical system or plumbing system.

The leading cause of lightning deaths in the United States is from people seeking shelter under trees.

Jazz pianist Bill Anschell to perform at North City Jazz Walk

Bill Anschell will perform at Jazz Walk
The North City Jazz Walk, August 14, welcomes the Bill Anschell Trio to 2012 line up of great jazz artists. The trio – Bill on piano, Chris Symer on bass, and Jose Martinez on drums— will perform at North City Bistro under the Chuck Cady/Ann Babb-Nordling sponsor banner.

A Seattle native, Bill Anschell returned to his roots in the Northwest after 25 years away. During that time he earned his music degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, established himself as a composer, and performer. He was drawn to Atlanta in 1989 to serve as the Jazz Coordinator for the Southern Arts Federation (SAF), the regional arts agency of the South. In that capacity he launched high-profile programs, published a how-to book on grant writing, and created “JazzSouth”, in internationally syndicated radio show.

“I always knew I would move back home,” said Bill, “and once my son became old enough for school, we began to look around. Combining the facts that my brothers live here, housing was affordable, and the schools have a great reputation, Shoreline was our preferred choice.”

Bill and his family have lived in the Northridge neighborhood since 2002. His son Sam attends Shorewood High School. According to his dad, Sam is a darn good saxophonist.

Jazz Walk listeners will delight in the repertoire performed by the Bill Anschell Trio.  Bill’s influences span a wide range of pianists and he is drawn to a lot of different styles.  Says Bill, “I don’t listen just to jazz; I get many of my ideas from other forms of music including that of other cultures.”

In 2011 Bill Anschell received Golden Ear Awards for the “Northwest Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year,” and the “Northwest Jazz Recording of the Year”.  Golden Ear Awards are administered by Earshot Jazz based on open voting by the Seattle jazz community.

For a treat, visit Bill Anschell’s website to read about his many accomplishments as a pianist, writer, and humorist.  His essay on Jazz Jam Sessions offers insider tips on how to lead a session and what to expect – all with tongue in cheek – if you are new at the game.

The North City Jazz Walk is on Tuesday, August 14. Music begins at 7pm; Jazz Bites are available when the street closes at 6pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance online and at designated locations in Shoreline. Visit the website for complete details.

Public performance on painted piano

Piano at Shoreline City Hall
People attending the Saturday Farmers Market behind Shoreline City Hall discovered the painted piano in the plaza at City Hall, 17500 Midvale N, and sat down to try it out.

The pianos, each painted by a different local artist, are placed randomly around the City, and are available to be gently played.

If you find one, let us know. Better yet, send a photo of you or friend playing the piano.

Food Lifeline expands child feeding program to Sultan

Food Lifeline, headquartered in Shoreline but serving a large region in western Washington, and the Sultan Boys and Girls Club are introducing summer meals to children in the city of Sultan.

This month Food Lifeline will be working with the Sultan Boys and Girls Club along with Volunteers of America to launch its second Kids Café feeding site. Kids Café, a child nutrition program providing meal sites in high-need communities in Western Washington with a sustainable source of healthful food and support, piloted in the nearby community of Index earlier this summer.

The success of the Index Kids Café site and the need present in Sultan led to the program’s expansion into that city.

Meals at Kids Café in Sultan will be made available at no charge to attending children 18 years of age and younger and no child will be turned away.

Kids Café seeks to fill a significant gap in service to children from high-need communities by giving them consistent access to nutritious food. Nearly 1 in 4 children in Western Washington is at risk of going hungry and the consequences of hunger and malnutrition to children are serious and can include diminished performance in school as well as cause delays in physical and cognitive
development.

Only 11% of children enrolled in free and reduced price school lunch programs have access to a summer meals program and children need year-round access to nutritious meals to succeed in school and reach their full potential.

The Kids Café pilot program was made possible through Food Lifeline’s partnership with Regence BlueShield.

The Tuesday Quick-Start Shoreline Business Workshop for start-up, existing or potential business owners will be held on August 7, 2012 from 12 noon to 1:30pm at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Avenue N. The workshop is free; feel free to bring a snack or a brown bag lunch.

The Art of Effective Networking
Powerful Professional Networking for Small Business

Workshop description

"Over the years I have found that a large percentage of business is found through networking! Needless to say, effective networking is vital to your continued business success. Rarely does business just “fall into our laps.” Instead, successful business partnerships are created when we target potential customers, establish communication and cultivate long term relationships.

"This workshop concentrates on how you can excel at the skill identified as the top reason for entrepreneurial success. Understand the importance of networking; why to network and how you network like a pro. Learn how easy it can be when you understand why networking is important, what you should be trying to achieve and how you can be a skilled and sparkling conversationalist.  You will learn how to carry on a conversation with people you’ve never met with ease. Understand and refine those all-important listening skills, eliminating the road blocks to good listening. Finally we will concentrate on what to do before, during and after the networking event.

"The take home result of this workshop will be the ability to professionally network any event you attend and build the relationships that positively impact your bottom line."

Your ballot is due Tuesday - here's where to take it

Sunday, August 5, 2012

Drop boxes and vans for collecting ballots are located around the state. Locally, we have a drop box at the Lake Forest Park City Hall (map).

For a full list of ballot drop box locations see the King County Elections Map of Ballot Drop Boxes and Vans.

Ballots are due by the official voting day, Tuesday, August 7, 2012, and must be postmarked by that date, or dropped in a ballot box by 8pm. By law, ballots cannot be accepted after that date.

Ballots may be dropped in any drop box or van location, but it is better to stay in King County. There are drop box locations at the Lynnwood Library and the Edmonds Library, but there would likely be a delay in sorting them out and getting them to King County.

The last post office pick up on Tuesday:
5:30pm  North City 17233 15th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155
6pm       Bitter Lake 929 N 145th St, Seattle 98133
5pm       Richmond Beach 1430 Nw Richmond Beach Rd, 98177
5pm       Kenmore 6700 NE 181st St, Kenmore 98028

Commentary: Write-in vote for Congress would be a waste

By Evan Smith

The Seattle Times editorial board has endorsed Democrat Steve Hobbs for a full term in Congress from the new 1st District. That makes sense. Moderate Democrat Hobbs may be a good fit for the swing district that combines the conservative rural areas of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and north King counties, with the liberal high-tech areas of Kirkland and Redmond.

The Times also recommended Hobbs as a write-in candidate for the short term in the old 1st District, the district that includes Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, other parts of north King and south Snohomish counties, and Bainbridge Island in Kitsap County.

That makes no sense.

When a write-in candidate qualified for the November ballot in a legislative district two years ago, there was only one candidate on the ballot; so the write-in candidate needed only to get 1 percent of the vote to qualify.

Here, there are 11 names on the ballot; meaning that a write-in candidate would have to finish ahead of 10 candidates in the primary to qualify for the general election.

Write-in candidates who have successfully qualified for past general elections all have registered as write-in candidates, a step that means that votes for the candidate count even with minor misspellings or if the candidates’ party preference is incorrect or missing. Hobbs has not registered or even indicated an interest in the position.

Voters can choose among the 11 candidates on the ballot. A write-in vote for Hobbs or anyone else would be a waste.

WeatherWatcher: Weekly Weather - Summer has now arrived

-Heat advisory issued.
-Saturday's high temperature
-Next week a little cooler compared to the weekend.
-Last week's weather data

As of Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 6:42pm PDT the National Weather Service of Seattle has issued a heat advisory in effect until 8pm PDT Sunday August 5, 2012.

The following is a message from the National Weather Service of Seattle.
Temperatures are expected to top out in the low to mid 90's in most places Sunday afternoon.

Impacts: The hot spell will lure many to area lakes and rivers this weekend.  If you plan to be in or near open water, be water safe and wear a life jacket.
Precautionary actions: Take extra precaution if you work or spend time outside.  When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.  Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.  Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.

Although Seattle Tacoma International Airport recorded a high temperature of 93°F, Shoreline and Lake Forest Park were a little cooler, topping in at a high of 87.3°F Saturday Afternoon. Digging through my weather data archive I found that last summer our highest temperature was 84.9°F, on July 24, 2011. Year before we had 93.9°F on July 8, 2010, and 93.7°F August 15, 2010. If we break 90°F Sunday afternoon it will be our first 90°F in two years!

After our warm and sunny weekend it looks like we will cool down to a more normal summer weather pattern. Monday may still be into the low 80's, however the rest of the week looks like we will have a marine air flow influence again. Morning clouds and and afternoon sun with the highs running in the neighborhood of the mid 70's.

Last week's weather data:
High temperature: 78.8°F
Low temperature: 50.2°F
No rainfall last week.
Warmest day: 65.0°F
Coldest day: 59.8°F
Average temperature: 61.9°F
3-year average temperature for last week: 66.5°F
Last week was 4.6°F cooler than our 3-year average.

Warmest and coldest days are based on average temperature of the entire day, starting at midnight.  All other averages are based on the whole week, starting Saturday morning at midnight. All weather data unless otherwise noted is sourced from Carl's Shoreline Weather Station.
