Tiffany McVeety took her small business toolkit to Europe

Llama and friends - back on the farm for now

Billy the Ewe

I’m Billy the Kid and I love to eat grass
With llamas and sheep we’ll devour en masse
My dad and his friends will be part of the crew
He’s William the Goat-- did I need to tell you

Surface water facilities will be trimmed up so neat
No “environmental impact”—our Crew can’t be beat
We’ll eat all the grasses and weeds up as well
We don’t think they’re “NOXIOUS”-we think they are swell.

We’ll keep costs way down as the greens we devour
We’ll just keep on chomping in sunshine or shower
Our salads need no dressing—we like them just plain
We’ll be “eating local”—in sunshine or rain

Vegetation management crew

We have a new role and it makes us so proud
It’s VEGETATION MANAGEMENT—we’ll stand out in the crowd
We hear that a Shepherd will be on the premises
He will be a friend and for sure not our Nemesis

So we are so happy to be part of your plan
We’re glad to assist you the best that we can

As it happens, the llama, alpacas, goats, sheep and other vegetation management workers were so efficient that they have, at least temporarily, eaten themselves out of a job. A contact in the surface water department says that:

Currently there are no animals in the City as we wait for plants to regrow. The animals were victims of their own success and will be brought back to sites in the near future as things sprout back up. This is a pilot project and as such we’re going through a learning process seeing how quickly the animals consume available plants, how the community reacts, etc.

Judging from comments to this newsletter, the herd is wildly popular, with people getting attached to individual animals (Woody, for example) and taking great enjoyment from seeing them all at work.

State Rep. Pollet’s candidate rating “under review”

By Evan Smith

State Rep. Gerry Pollet may get a new candidate rating from the King County Municipal league.

The Municipal league web site says that 46th District Rep Pollet’s current rating is under review.
When the League released its ratings Monday it gave Pollet its third highest rating, “good,” while Democratic challenger Sylvester Cann got a “very good” rating.

The two are the only candidates for the position, meaning that both will advance from the Aug. 7 primary to the Nov. 6 general election. No Republicans or independents have filed for the position.
Pollet has held the position by appointment since late last year.

At the time of the original rating, the League website listed Pollet's campaign questionnaire as "missing", but the site now has a link to the completed questionnaire.

Pollet said Saturday that, before the original ratings, the League apparently had lost his completed questionnaire and letters of reference from two legislative committee chairmen.
The 46th Legislative District includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and northeast Seattle.

Get educated about opera

On Tuesday, July 24, from 7-8pm at Third Place Commons at Lake Forest Park town center, members of Seattle Opera’s education staff will lead an informal opera talk designed to give you an orientation to their upcoming production of Turandot.

© David Bachman, Pittsburgh Opera, Turandot, 2011

Set in China’s Imperial City, Puccini’s spectacular masterpiece recounts the legend of a bloodthirsty princess whose icy, vengeful heart softens as she comes to know true love. The lyrical and sweeping score features many memorable melodies, including the popular tenor aria “Nessun dorma.” Stunning pageantry, passionate confrontations, the famous riddle scene, and one of opera’s most powerful kisses make Turandot a monumental achievement not to be missed.

Update: Lost dogs reunited with owner

Follow-Up On the Two Stray Dogs Found Friday Night

In a follow-up message to the Good Samaritans who captured the dogs and got them to the PAWS shelter, Animal Control reported that the yellow lab and the chocolate brown pitbull found in the intersection of 185th and Aurora on Friday night, July 6, were reunited with a very grateful owner the next day. A micro-chip was found in one of the dogs that allowed Animal Control and PAWS to locate their home within hours of their rescue.

Original story:

Yellow Lab found in intersection

Yellow Lab and Dark Chocolate Brown Pit Bull Found

On Friday, July 6th, at around 5:30pm, three good samaritans stopped to corral two large dogs out of the intersection of 185th and Aurora in Shoreline. The two dogs, a yellow lab and dark chocolate brown pit bull, seemed to be very gentle, very attached to one another and very hungry.

Neither of the dogs had collars. The Yellow lab seemed slightly over weight and more energetic. The Pit bull was very calm and had a little spot of white fur on its chest as well as a few white front toes.

Black Pitbull found in intersection
Both dogs were male. They were given food and water while they waited for Animal Control to arrive and deliver them to PAWS in Lynnwood.

If these two sound like your dogs, please contact PAWS right away - these two sweethearts are waiting safely and eagerly there for you!

PAWS  425-787-2500 ext 430 holds the contracts for sheltering animals from Shoreline and from Lake Forest Park.

If you are interested in joining the SWEL Timebank, please bring these three items:

  •     A completed application (found on our website)
  •     Picture ID
  •     Phone numbers for two personal references

What are timebanks?

There are over 100 successful timebanks in the United States, including the Eastside Timebank, which serves the cities of Kirkland, Redmond, and Bellevue.  Timebanks use a low overhead, self-organizing internet based system to help people exchange their talents and passions with other members so that they can enjoy the necessities and niceties of life.  Read more

How do timebanks work?  An hour you spend doing something for a SWEL Timebank member goes into the bank as one time hour. You can then use this time hour having another SWEL member do something for you.

Timebanking is different than bartering because you can provide a service to one member and receive a service from someone else. All services are tax-exempt, and each hour of service is of equal value.

SWEL stands for Shoreline, Woodway, Edmonds, Lake Forest Park

Washington state gets test waiver for school kids

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn announced July 6, 2012 that the U.S. Department of Education had granted Washington’s waiver request from Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requirements. Washington is one of 26 states that have received waivers from ESEA to date.

“This decision is welcome news that gives our state the opportunity to implement bold reforms around standards and accountability,” Dorn said. “It allows state and local educators to decide how to best meet the individual needs of students they serve. Current ESEA law is written in a way that narrowly defines ‘success’ based mainly on standardized test scores.

While Dorn acknowledged the importance of test scores as a component in ensuring accountability, he stated that getting kids to be career and college ready requires much more. Schools need to be serving their students and communities in areas like school environment and access to rigorous coursework, as well as providing a well-rounded education that will lead to success in a knowledge-based economy.

Donate your "lovingly used" musical instruments to LFP Rotary at the Sunday Farmers Market

Donate that "lovingly used" instrument, violin, clarinet, trombone, or other musical instrument in your attic or garage that isn't being used any longer.

Shoreline Schools Music4Life is a Rotary inspired program that enables low income students in the 5th and 6th grades to play an instrument they would not otherwise be able to.

To children learning to play a musical instrument, participation in a music program is a meaningful activity - not only is it fun but statistics show it helps build relationships that can last a lifetime as well as improving academic skills.

We thank you in advance for your thoughtful participation.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers' Market is located on the lower level of LFP Mall at 17171 Bothell Way NE, every Sunday during the summer from 11am to 4pm.

Saturday July 28th and Sunday July 29th  11 am to 5 pm

Artists in Action at Sky Nursery

Northwest Artists in Action is a group of accomplished fine artists who love to create and display their art in public.  The unique feature of the group is that each artist will be creating an art project on site.  This gives you a chance to see a painting being created in real time and the opportunity to discuss the art with the artist.  Each artist specializes in one or more of the fine arts media - oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, or pencil.  Stop by and admire a variety of paintings and sketches in progress, plus a display of finished original art available for purchase.

Book review by Aarene Storms: The Half-Life of Planets

The Half-Life of Planets by Emily Franklin and Brendan Halpin

"I am not a slut," says Lianna in the opening line of this dual-narrator novel.

Lianna doesn't ever go farther than kissing with boys, but she has kissed a lot of boys.  Does that make her promiscuous?  She isn't sure.  To answer the question, Lianna embarks on a self-imposed scientific inquiry: to see what changes in her life when she focuses her attention on her summer research project and refrains from kissing boys.  Then, she meets Hank.

Hank has never kissed a girl, but he would really like to try it -- and when he meets Lianna, who doesn't seem freaked out by his atypical interest in (and continual babble about) music, he thinks that he would like to kiss her.  Hank, however, has a very typical Asperger's Syndrome inability to read social cues, and so he isn't sure if Lianna wants to kiss him.  Intellectually, he has learned the meanings of conversation gambits and body language, but the details remain mysterious to him.

The narrator perspective bounces between Lianna and Hank, giving readers insight into both characters ... and an opportunity to laugh more than once at each of the interactions between them.

This is a fun summer book for readers who enjoy snappy conversations and rock-and-roll trivia, with lots of humor and a tear or two.  No sex, no violence; a few kisses, minimal cussing, and references to off-page masturbation.  Recommended for ages 14 to adult.

Take a walk back in time on July 19

John Hartquist portrays Edmonds founder, George Brackett.

“Walk Back in Time” Cemetery Tour Celebrates Edmonds History

Do you want to find out a little more about the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery and Columbarium? Join us at the cemetery on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 1pm to take a “Walk Back in Time” and learn about the history of the cemetery and the people buried there.

The guided tour is conducted by members of the Cemetery Board dressed in period costumes. The tour is divided into 3 sections and lasts approximately 45 minutes. In addition to the guides there will be several “ghosts” throughout the cemetery telling their life stories including a special appearance by Edmonds founder, George Brackett, portrayed by local actor, John Hartquist.

The 6.5-acre cemetery was founded in 1891 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. Over the next century numerous owners managed the site until 1982 when Larry Hubbard, an Edmonds businessman, purchased the site and gave it to the City of Edmonds to maintain and operate. Some people may remember at the time Mr. Hubbard bought the property it was unkempt and overgrown. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers it was restored to the scenic landmark that it is today. The most recent addition to the cemetery is the Columbarium, completed in October 2006 and located in the northeast corner of the grounds.

Some graves date as far back as the Spanish American and Civil Wars. There are also many Edmonds pioneers and fourteen of the city’s thirty-four mayors buried in the cemetery. Come listen to and share stories as we remember and learn about those who came before us.

The Edmonds Memorial Cemetery and Columbarium is located at 100th Avenue West and 15th St. SW, one block north of the Westgate QFC. Street parking is available. The tour is free and refreshments will be served.
