RapidRide E line will follow 358 route

Monday, June 18, 2012

Proposed stops and stations for Line E

King County Executive Dow Constantine has recommended the alignments and station locations for RapidRide E, King County Metro's Bus Rapid Transit service that will go from Aurora Village Transit Center in Shoreline to downtown Seattle starting in September 2013,when it will replace current Metro route #358 that travels between those two points.

According to King County Metro: "Between the Aurora Village Transit Center and downtown Seattle, the preferred E Line alignment will primarily follow the path of current Route 358. The one exception is southbound between Winona Avenue N and N 63rd Street, where the E Line will stay on Aurora Avenue N instead of serving Linden Avenue N as Route 358 currently does.

"Metro is in discussions with the City of Seattle to site a RapidRide stop on Aurora Avenue N near N 66th Street. If the city does not allow us to put southbound RapidRide stop on Aurora Avenue N, the southbound E Line will use the same route as current Route 358, with a single southbound stop on Linden Avenue N.

"There will be nearly 30 stations and stops along the E Line, spaced an average of 2,100 feet apart (not including stops in downtown Seattle). Stops are spaced closer together along parts of the route where land use suggests higher passenger turnover, and farther apart along parts with few transit attractions."

Between this fall and next spring, public input will be sought regarding connections to the RapidRide E Line, with construction of shelters, signage, ORCA card readers, etc. starting next spring.

King County launches new Veterans Treatment Court

King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson (right) with Judge Michael Finkle, Regional Veterans Treatment Court Judge for District Court

County officials, judges, community members, and veterans gathered at the King County Courthouse today to celebrate the launch of the new Veterans Treatment Court – a specialty court for veterans involved in the criminal justice system that provides accountability while linking veterans to needed treatment and services.

Created by legislation authored by King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson and adopted unanimously by the Metropolitan King County Council in 2011, the new court opens as a component of King County District Court’s Regional Mental Health Court.

“Veterans Treatment Court will help veterans who are struggling to reintegrate into civilian life after returning from the front lines of war,” said Ferguson, sponsor of the Veterans Treatment Court. “Building on the success of veterans’ courts around the nation, King County’s court will connect veterans with needed treatment and services, reduce recidivism, and improve lives. We owe it to our service men and women.”

By focusing exclusively on veterans and their unique circumstances, the new Veterans Treatment Court will be equipped to help veterans suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). The “signature injuries” of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, PTSD and TBI can make it more difficult to reintegrate into civilian life and potentially trigger behaviors that draw veterans into the criminal justice system.

“The Veterans Court would not exist without the partnership of the judicial, executive, and legislative branches of government, veterans’ advocacy groups, treatment providers, and other professionals with diverse backgrounds,” said Regional Veterans Court Judge Michael Finkle. “That partnership is a perfect example of creative problem-solving at its best.”

The new Veterans Treatment Court follows the successful model of the County’s award-winning Drug and Mental Health therapeutic courts, which focus on treatment and rehabilitation rather than incarceration for low-level, non-violent offenders. The Veterans Treatment Court will connect eligible veterans to treatment and counseling services available through the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA coordinates with local governments and criminal justice agencies to identify justice-involved veterans and connect them with services as part of its Veterans Justice Outreach Initiative.

“War-zone service can have a profound impact on our servicemen and women. Some face challenges reintegrating back into civilian life, which can lead to involvement in the criminal justice system,” said Kevin Devine, Veterans Justice Outreach Coordinator for the Seattle Division of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. “VA Puget Sound is pleased to be partnering with King County District Court to help link struggling veterans to the treatment they need.”

King County joins Thurston, Pierce, Spokane, and Clark counties, as well as Seattle Municipal Court, in creating new specialty courts for veterans. The first in the nation was started in Buffalo, New York, in 2008. Since then, at least 80 jurisdictions across the country have established veteran treatment courts.

King County’s Veterans Treatment Court will be funded in future years by the Veterans and Human Services Levy, which was renewed by voters in 2011 with nearly 70 percent voter approval.

Obituary: Ardelle Elaine Tallman 1924-2012

Ardelle Elaine Tallman
Ardelle Elaine (Dohlen) Tallman passed away peacefully in Lake Forest Park on Sunday June 10, 2012. She was born to Hjalmar Olaus and Agnes Leova (McInerney) Dohlen on June 3rd 1924 in Opheim, Montana and taught for years at Lynnwood High School. After her marriage to James Shepard Tallman in 1948 she lived continuously in present-day Shoreline, Washington – most recently in Richmond Beach.

She attended Northern Montana State after high school, becoming a medical secretary and moving to Seattle to work during WWII.  She had many memories of old-time Seattle luminaries, dancing with the troops at the USO and later at the old Trianon Ballroom in Belltown.

In 1947 she graduated with honors from the University of Washington in Psychology.  When her two children, Tracy and Roger, were older she returned to the University of Washington and got her teaching certificate having a long career with the Edmonds School District mostly at Lynnwood High School where she taught business education just as computers were coming on the scene.  She later got her Master’s in Education.

But she never lost touch with her hometown and the farm life, returning to Opheim nearly every year to visit with relatives there and attend school reunions.  Many of her classmates moved to the Seattle area and remained life-long friends.  She and her sister still own the land that her mother homesteaded in Nashua, Montana in the early 1900s and the Opheim farm where she was raised is still owned and operated by family.

She was preceded in death by her husband James in 2008, her brother Ormand in 1998 and her brother Erling in 2009.  She is survived by her life-long friend and loving sister Corrine Jordan and her husband John.  Brother Ronnie lives in Sacramento, California.  Also surviving her are her two children and two nieces – Linda Brand and her husband Dan and Katie Jordan and husband Glenn Klute.  She also has cousins, nieces and nephews throughout Montana.

She was an intelligent, feisty, loving and classy woman.  She enjoyed traveling - from early family camping trips and on to Europe, Australia and China and other places in later years, often with her sister Corrine and brother-in-law John or her fellow teachers and sometimes with James (who would rather stay home).  She loved accounting, reading, ice cream and entertaining - always maintaining a meticulous house.  She and James built their last home in Richmond Beach where she lived until January.  Looking over old photographs she often has a camera in her hand and there will be many memories to share at her memorial.  She was late to nearly every appointment, having too many things to do before she arrived.

A special thanks to her dear friend Joan Spencer who wrote her many notes as she became ill expecting no response.  They warmed her heart.

Since she loved to entertain we’ll be having a service and party for her at the Nile Shrine Golf Center on Monday June 18th in the Gold Room from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. with food and wine.  In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice.  Entrance to the Gold Room is through the side door near the handicapped parking stalls.

Nile is located at 6601-244th St SW in Mountlake Terrace which borders I-5.  Entrance off westbound 205th .  See Beck's Funeral Home for up-to-date information and to share memories.

The 7th Congressional District, which McDermott has represented for 12 two-year terms, now includes Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Edmonds and Woodway, in addition to most of Seattle and Seattle’s southwest suburbs.

“It's incumbent upon our leaders at all levels to lend their voice and advocate for those in their communities,” he said recently. “As your Congressman, I will provide an unrelenting voice for the Sonics return and I will celebrate with all of you the day they come home.”

Hughes is one of six candidates – three Democrats, two Republicans and an independent -- challenging McDermott in the August primary, with the top two vote getters advancing to the general election.

Hughes has reported raising $162,847, compared to 170,145 for McDermott and $11,343 for Democrat Donovan Rivers, the only other candidate who has reported raising money.

County Executive recommends RapidRide expansion in Shoreline

County Executive recommends alignments for expansion of RapidRide from Shoreline to Seattle and Burien to Renton - Metro Transit’s E and F lines expected to provide up to 4 million annual bus rides

King County Executive Dow Constantine recommended Thursday, alignments and station locations for two more RapidRide lines connecting Shoreline with Seattle, and Burien with Renton.

“RapidRide is a cost-effective complement to light rail – and these two new lines deliver on the promise of Transit Now, with up to 4 million rides a year to jobs, shopping, and recreation,” said Executive Constantine, who sent his proposed ordinance to the Metropolitan King County Council.

The E Line will run the length of Aurora Boulevard from Shoreline to downtown Seattle. It will offer frequent service to the busy Aurora Village Transit Center, and provide key connections for residents who live east and west of Aurora.

“As a regular rider on Metro bus Route 41, I know how important fast, reliable bus service is for getting where you need to go,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, whose council district includes north Seattle and Shoreline. “Adding RapidRide service from Shoreline to downtown on the Aurora corridor will improve transit mobility along one of the region’s most heavily used bus corridors, helping people get to work, school, and home.”

“RapidRide E Line serves one of the most popular transit corridors in Metro’s system and RapidRide F Line connects bus riders to light rail and commuter rail,” said Councilmember Larry Phillips, Chair of the Transportation, Environment, and Economy Committee, and representative of communities served by the E Line. “Increasing speed, reliability, and safety through RapidRide will improve the commutes of current riders and attract new transit riders.”

RapidRide is a different type of Metro service that features high-frequency service, off-board fare payment, and systems that integrate the buses with traffic signals and signage. It adds up to a more efficient and effective transit system. RapidRide also has distinctive red-and-yellow buses are energy efficient, low-emission hybrid vehicles with low floors and three doors for easier, faster boarding.

The proposed ordinance is scheduled for hearing at the Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee in mid-July.
