This year’s Herb and Food Fair is also where a new garden project will have its official kickoff. Bastyr University is honored to have been selected as the Pacific Northwest representative of the Sacred Seeds Sanctuary, an international effort to cultivate native plants, encourage seed saving and retain local ethnobotanical knowledge. We are the only sanctuary on the entire west coast and will be working closely with community representatives and local tribes to create a communal space in which to share the uses and importance of native plants.

Transportation and Parking
Attendees can park for free at the Kenmore Park and Ride (at 7346 N.E. Bothell Way) and take a free Bastyr shuttle directly to the event. The bus runs every 15 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Very limited parking will be available on campus for a $5 fee. Bastyr University is located at 14500 Juanita Drive N.E., Kenmore, adjacent to St. Edward State Park. No event parking is permitted at St. Edward State Park.

While the fair is free, donations are always welcome. Proceeds from the Herb and Food Fair benefit Bastyr University students by contributing to the University's garden improvements and providing funding to purchase supplies for its herb- and food-cultivating classes.

Shorecrest Dublin Dollars group honored for community service

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Photo from left: Deputy Supt. Marcia Harris, Supt. Sue Walker, Mary Grassley, Barb Swan and Peter Hughes of Dublin Dollars, Principal Pat Hegarty and Enumclaw Supt Mike Nelson, president of WASA 110.

Dublin Dollars, the community group which raised funds to support the Shorecrest High School recent trip to Ireland, was among those honored by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) at its Community Recognition Awards luncheon held May 18 at the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Renton.

Each year, WASA 110, which includes Shoreline, holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders nominated by their respective districts.

Representing Dublin Dollars at the event were Mary Grassley, Barb Swan and Peter Hughes, accompanied by Superintendent Sue Walker and Shorecrest Principal Pat Hegarty.

Dublin Dollars raised more than $44,000 to support the trip by the Shorecrest marching band, pipers. Flags and Highland Dancers to Dublin to participate in the St. Patrick's Day parade and tour sites in Ireland.

The Dublin Dollars nomination read as follows:
"The "Dublin Dollars" fundraising group was an immense help in making the Ireland tour a reality. From June 2011 through February 2012 the volunteers of this organization provided numerous opportunities for Shorecrest students to earn money for their trip.
"This group of parents and community members graciously gave of themselves so that our students could have the opportunity of a lifetime. In nine months they raised in excess of $44,000. They kept up a Web site, Facebook page as well as a Google group to promote their efforts. They also were sensitive to families having difficulties and reached out to several to get them help with the cost of the trip. Some of the parents made personal and gift matching contributions to allow scholarships to be offered, beyond the usual fundraising efforts for the entire group.
"The experience for Shorecrest students has been immeasurable. The 135 Shorecrest students, accompanied by 30 staff and parents, spent 10 days in Ireland performing, touring, and bonding. While the trip was a musical success, it was also a deep cultural learning experience as well. They visited Dublin, Limerick, Killarney, Cobh, Dingle, Athlone, Galway, and points in between. They had the chance to meet and interact with Irish high school students and to share a performance with a community youth band from Athlone."

Shoreline Deputy Superintendent Marcia Harris was also honored at the luncheon. She will retire August 31 after 37 years overall in public education.

Sound Transit: Northgate Station update

Joni Earl, CEO
Sound Transit

reprinted with permission

There’s a lot of interest throughout the region on the future Link light rail station at Northgate, as well as the vision for transit-oriented development in the surrounding area.

Sound Transit staff on Thursday presented the Board with updated options to consider as part of the integrated access plans for the station. Kevin Desmond, general manager of King County Metro, also outlined Metro’s Northgate objectives, including future transit-oriented development potentials.

Northgate is already a very busy transit center with about 1,500 park-and-ride spaces and around 5,000 bus boardings a day. It will be considerably busier in 2021, when Link trains begin service. By 2030, we expect to have 15,000 light rail boardings there a day.

We’re looking at a number of options for dealing with parking during construction of the Link station and then when trains are running. One option is a potential 600-900-stall shared use parking garage to replace about 430 park-and-ride stalls and 450 Northgate Mall parking stalls that would be displaced during six years of construction.

Other options we were asked to explore included shared parking opportunities on the west side of I-5 with a possible pedestrian bridge.

The garage option has the potential of converting seven acres of surface parking lots into a structure that takes up one acre, leaving about six acres free for redevelopment by King County. Overall, there would be no net increase in transit parking.

We’re planning to break ground on the 4.3-mile North Link extension from the University of Washington to Northgate in August. A Northgate construction update public meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Olympic View Elementary School cafeteria, 504 NE 95th Street, Seattle.

Editor's note: The Lynnwood Link, which will run from Northgate to Lynnwood, is currently in the planning stages.

Reminder: Back yard streams workshop on May 31 or June 9

Boeing Creek
The Lake Forest Park Environmental Quality Commission and the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation are sponsoring a free and open to anyone workshop on how to maintain backyard streams.

The workshops will help streamside landowners understand how they can minimize damage to their own property, avoid damaging their neighbors’ property, and help the region’s efforts to restore salmon.

The workshops will start with information on stream ecology and watershed science, and progress to improved landscaping and streambank protection techniques.

People with streambank property are especially welcome to attend, and all others with an interest in healthy streams are also invited. People from neighboring cities are more than welcome to attend.

The same workshop will be presented twice:
  • Thursday May 31 from 7 – 9 pm
  • Saturday June 9 from 10 am to noon
A field trip is planned for Saturday June 9 from 1 to 3 pm for participants from both workshop sessions.

Bartell Drugs partners with Food Lifeline for "Bartell's Community Food Drive" beginning May 28

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Bartell Drugs' tradition of helping to fight hunger in the Puget Sound area continues with the 2012 launch of "Bartell's Community Food Drive," a new community partnership with Food Lifeline

Scheduled for May 28 to June 10, "Bartell's Community Food Drive" focuses on replenishing local food banks in the summer months when families that normally depend on free or reduced-price school meals may struggle to provide healthy meals at home.

Some food item suggestions include tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, cheese crackers, applesauce and canned fruit.

Other suggested items include baby formula, diapers, baby food (boxes or plastic tubs only) and personal care items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, tissues, shampoo and conditioner, soap and feminine hygiene products.

Throughout the two-week drive, all 58 Bartell Drugs locations in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties will be accepting non-perishable food and other suggested donation items. Since 2009, Bartell Drugs' leadership role in summer food drives has generated over 60,000 pounds of food for local food banks.

"For many families, dealing with food hardship is an ongoing challenge, and the need becomes more acute during the summer months when children are at home," said Bartell Drugs Chairman & CEO George D. Bartell. "With the support of our customers, we hope to fill a very important need in the communities we serve."

According to "Map the Meal Gap-Child Food Insecurity 2011," a recent study conducted by Feed America, 23% of children are at risk of hunger in Washington State. Many are unsure of the source of their next meal.

Seattle-based Bartell Drugs owns and operates 58 stores throughout King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Family-owned since 1890, it is the oldest family-owned drugstore chain in the United States.

As part of the Master Builder's Care Foundation, one of 15 ramps was built in Shoreline for the Lunak family. Jan Lunak had been unable to leave her home without assistance from family or friends. Now, using her motorized scooter, she has regained mobility and can use the new wheel chair ramp to leave her home independently and enjoy the outdoors on her own.

Joseph Irons and his company have been building ramps for the Rampathon program since 2006 and continue to do so as their personal and company mission is to give back to the communities where they live and work.

Two suspects approached two Shorewood High School students near 185th and Aurora on their way to school this morning. Implying that they had weapons, they took the girls' I-Pads and other belongings.

Shortly thereafter police responded to a report of a second robbery of an adult male who was walking to Shoreline Community College on Linden Ave N from N 185th Street. The suspects were described similarly.

According to Sgt Kathleen Larson of the Shoreline Police,
SRO Bardsley was on scene almost immediately as well as responding patrol officers. One of the officers spotted the suspects and gave chase. One suspect was taken into custody the second (reportedly armed with a hand gun) escaped. The area was quickly contained, Shorewood put into lockdown, K-9 from Lynnwood PD requested and arrived.
The second suspect was spotted and officers gave chase. The second suspect was also taken into custody without incident. The “gun” turned out to be a car charger. The stolen property was recovered. Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery. KCSO Major Crimes will be handling the follow-up and charged.
Great cooperation with the Shoreline School District and our thanks to the KCSO deputies in the area who also helped as well as the Lynnwood PD K-9.

Shoreline Water District eases the way for new developments at old YMCA and Bingo Hall

From the Shoreline Water District

Ron Ricker, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Shoreline Water District, is pleased to announce the signing of a new development agreement for a construction project in the Shoreline area.

The project will be at the old Bingo Hall at the intersection of NE 165th Street and 5th Avenue NE, where long time landowner, Development Services of America (DSA) has just signed a 10-year lease with Veolia Transportation.  The District and DSA are also beginning design and construction of new water system improvement projects which will benefit the entire Ridgecrest area.  Estimated date of occupancy is July 1, 2012.

A second water system improvement agreement for another development is expected to be signed next week. The project, located at the old YMCA lot at 1220 NE 175th Street, will become home to a new 165-unit apartment complex developed by the Inland Group.

The project consists of one, two and three bedroom rental units. According to the developer, there is an under-supply of quality affordable apartments for families in the area. “We appreciate the efforts of Shoreline Water District in helping make the project a reality,” said Darin Davidson, President, Inland Group.

Shoreline Water District and the Inland Group will begin design and construction on several water system improvements later this year. Building construction will begin mid June 2012, with an estimated completion date of late summer 2013. The projects will benefit North City and the surrounding area.

Before a building permit can be issued for a development, the Planning and Fire Departments require a water utility to verify whether adequate water is available. If it is not, then system improvements are identified and must agree to be completed by the developer prior to issuing a building permit, which can result in lengthy delays.

During preparation of their 2012 Water System Plan Update, Shoreline Water District had already conducted extensive long range planning to identify and schedule water system improvement projects that would be required in order to allow every parcel of land in their service area to be developed to its “highest and best use” in both the Ridgecrest and North City areas.

“In order to make sure that adequate water pressure and volume would be available for the Fire Department in the event of a fire, we spent time carefully calibrating our hydraulic model long in advance of these projects,” explained Ricker. “Then we field verified the results of the computer model to verify how much water would be available anywhere in our system under a wide range of operating scenarios.”

As a result of their proactive planning, the District was ready when the developers approached them with their proposed projects.

“Both developers will share in the cost of these water system improvement projects with the District, which is yet another win-win for our ratepayers,” said Ricker.

Shoreline Water District provides water service to residents of Shoreline located east of I-5 and residents of Lake Forest Park in the western part of the city.  A copy of a presentation about the District’s Water System Plan Update is posted on our website for review. The District, which is about to begin its 82nd year of operation, welcomes development and encourages developers to contact our office before planning any future building projects. One hundred percent of the revenue collected as part of a development project goes back into improving our water system.

Ballinger neighborhood residents were startled Wednesday night as sirens and police filled their neighborhood.

According to one resident, "We had Shoreline and Mountlake Terrace police in the Ballinger neighborhood last night, from about 6:15 to 7:45pm, speeding on local streets with lights on, searching for suspects with guns who had reportedly broken into a home nearby. 25th NE at 205th and 203rd were blocked off for quite a while as they narrowed the search."

One resident had to convince an officer at blocked-off 25th NE that he needed to get home to check on his wife who might be out walking the dog. (She was already safely at home).

According to our friends at MLTNews.com, Mountlake Terrace Police were searching for armed robbers who had been in a home in the  4500 block of 241st Street Southwest in Mountlake Terrace.

According to the MLTNews, these are the details as released Thursday by MLT Police:

Police responded to a report by a 31 year-old female resident that two men who had been interested in purchasing a car entered her home, brandished weapons and took her cash. She told 911 dispatchers that she was holding one of the two suspects at gunpoint. As officers were responding, the report changed to both suspects fleeing the area on foot.
Officers from multiple agencies (Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Woodway, Lake Forest Park, Shoreline, King County and Bothell) responded to assist. As officers came into the area, they arrested one of the suspects walking near 33rd Avenue Northeast and Northeast 205th. A witness told officers that he saw the second suspect run from the area as police officers were arriving.
Officers set up a containment area and started a K-9 track. The second suspect was eventually located in the area of Northeast 204th and 33rd Avenue Northeast and taken into custody without further incident.
Further investigation by detectives determined that the female victim of the robbery was attempting to purchase illegal drugs from the two male subjects, not a car as she initially reported.
At this point, one suspect — a 28-year-old male from Auburn — has been booked into the Snohomish County Jail. Detectives are continuing the investigation and possibility of further charges.
The Mountlake Terrace Police Department would like to thank all the witnesses and other police agencies who responded to assist in the apprehension of the suspects.
Anyone with further information on this incident can contact the City of Mountlake Terrace Police Department at 425-670-8260 and ask to speak with a detective.

It’s truly the end of an era. Shorecrest High School is undergoing a major reconstruction, and with it, over 50 years of basketball history in its original gymnasium.

For over five decades, fans have flocked to the gymnasium to cheer on their favorite high school sports teams. On June 9, the community will have one last chance to support the basketball teams in the original gym, and say goodbye to the historic structure before it is demolished this summer.

“There is so much history, so many stories in this gym,” says Brian Fischer, head coach of the Shorecrest boys’ basketball team. “Every home game, every assembly, every major school event has taken place here. The boys and girls basketball teams are honored to have been involved in that history, and this is our chance to say goodbye to the building.”

The event on June 9 will feature two final basketball games:
  • 5 p.m.: 2011-2012 Shorecrest varsity girls’ basketball team, (finishing the season 4th in State with a 22-5 record) versus an all-star Shorecrest alumni girls’ basketball team.
  • 6:30 p.m.: 2011-2012 Shorecrest varsity boys’ basketball team (finishing the season with an 18-7 record) versus an all-star Shorecrest alumni boys’ basketball team.

Mobile home fire in Kenmore - homeowner awakened by smoke alarm

The Northshore Fire Department was dispatched at 10:27a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012, to a structure fire in a mobile home located in the 7300 block of NE 175 Street.

The homeowner was asleep when she was awakened by the sound of her smoke alarm.  She saw smoke and flames coming from the spare bedroom, exited through the back door and immediately called 911.  Due to the early notification of the smoke alarm and the quick actions of the homeowner, the Northshore firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire very rapidly.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the mobile home.  They attacked the fire offensively by entering through the front door and they were able to contain the damage to a small area in the bedroom/office. The fire was under control in approximately 5 minutes.

The Northshore Fire Marshal discovered that the homeowner had left a lit candle on a table when she took a nap.  The fire was determined to be accidental and the estimated fire damage is $5,000.00.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.

In 2011, the Northshore Fire Department completed a community risk reduction program in the mobile home parks located in the fire district.  Fire department staff and volunteers went door-to-door installing new smoke alarms where needed and ensuring that all existing smoke alarms were operating properly.

Test your smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries annually and install new smoke alarms every ten years.  This homeowner owes her life to having a working smoke alarm.

Op-Ed: Continued services for our veterans powered by renewed Veterans Levy

King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson chairs the King County Council’s Government Accountability, Oversight, and Financial Performance Committee. His father and grandfathers were veterans. He can be reached at 206-296-1001 or by email.

By King County Councilmember Bob Ferguson

This Memorial Day weekend, as the nation honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country, King County is working to ensure there are services to help our veterans.

Since 2006, the King County Veterans and Human Services Levy invested approximately $40 million to support veteran services programs countywide. Serving King County’s more than 135,000 veterans, these tax dollars have funded housing, mental health services, and job training to help veterans and their families find their footing during these tough economic times.

Examples of how levy funds are being used to help include:
  • A dedicated telephone resource for veterans to provide service information and referrals, including crisis and suicide counseling;
  • Treatment services for veterans and families dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression;
  • New veterans’ housing projects in places such as Bellevue, Renton, Kirkland, and Seattle, and a 45 percent increase in shelter beds for homeless veterans; and
  • Job training and employment assistance for unemployed veterans.

In addition, this June, King County will begin a new Veterans Treatment Court that focuses on treatment and rehabilitation rather than incarceration. Modeled after other therapeutic courts, such as the County’s nationally-recognized drug court and mental health court, the new Veterans Treatment Court will provide accountability for veterans involved in the criminal justice system who are suffering from war-related trauma while linking them to treatment and support services. The Veterans and Human Services Levy includes funding for Veterans Treatment Court and other emerging justice programs for veterans.

King County voters overwhelmingly supported renewal of the Veterans and Human Services Levy last August. Almost 70 percent of voters said ‘yes’ to continued funding for services for veterans and others in need. The six-year levy will generate approximately $17 million a year through 2017 with one half of the revenue dedicated exclusively to serve veterans, military personnel, and their families. Two citizen levy oversight boards provide accountability for how levy dollars are used.

Having come from a family of veterans, I know that veterans deserve our support. The best way to honor the sacrifice of our veterans is to make sure there are services and help available when they need it. I was proud to author the Veterans and Human Services Levy, but am most gratified that the levy is effectively serving our veterans, who selflessly serve our nation.
