Shoreline woman chosen 2012 Mariners Honorary Bat Girl

A Shoreline woman who has been fighting cancer for almost 10 years has been named the Seattle Mariners 2012 Honorary Bat Girl, Major League Baseball’s annual Mother’s Day national day of recognition to raise awareness and support for MLB’s Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer® initiative.

Nancy Haunty’s first cancer diagnosis was breast cancer in 2002. After successful surgery and treatment, Haunty’s cancer went into remission until 2007. When her cancer reoccurred, Haunty had a mastectomy in her affected breast, six months of chemotherapy, then at the recommendation of her doctors, a mastectomy in her unaffected breast, and then reconstructive surgery.

Haunty was cancer-free for two more years. Then, in 2009, she learned she had Stage Four cancer and it had spread to her liver, lungs and spine. Although not in full remission, Haunty says she has responded well to the treatment. Haunty’s most recent diagnosis came earlier this year when she learned the cancer had spread to her brain. Two weeks ago, Haunty had Gamma Knife® radiosurgery at Swedish Medical Center’s Cherry Hill campus in Seattle. Haunty says the procedure went smoothly and she will have a scan in a few weeks to see how the tumor is responding to the treatment.

In spite of the many surgeries, treatments and recurrences of cancer, Haunty has maintained a positive attitude with the love and support of her husband Jake, family and friends. “Anyone who gets hit by a fastball, you think you can’t handle another setback, but you do, and you go on to the next challenge,” said Haunty. And she credits her medical team as well. “If you have the misfortune of having cancer, Seattle is a great place to be. I get wonderful care at Swedish and am grateful for the groundbreaking research at Fred Hutch, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and UW Medicine.”

Haunty continues to work fulltime and volunteers with local organizations that help breast cancer survivors with financial assistance, caring baskets and group physical activities. She even traveled to Washington, D.C. last year to testify to the FDA in favor of a drug that was effective in her treatment regimen.

Because the Mariners are in New York to play the Yankees on Mother’s Day, May 13, Haunty will be honored at Safeco Field on Monday, May 21, the Mariners first game back after a long road trip. Haunty will participate in a pregame ceremony, decked out in her personalized pink Mariners jersey. Accompanying Haunty will be her husband Jake, friend Kelly West, who nominated her, and her in-laws, who are flying in from Ohio for the special event.

Haunty’s story of inspiration and hope was chosen from among thousands that were submitted online by breast cancer survivors, advocates and supporters of the cause.

Nine-time Grammy award winner Bonnie Raitt, who lost her brother and close friends to cancer, recorded a special video at the MLB Fan Cave to lend her support to the Honorary Bat Girl initiative.

Also on Mother’s Day, hundreds of MLB players used pink bats by Louisville Slugger, the Official Bat of Major League Baseball, stamped with the MLB breast cancer awareness logo. To further demonstrate their support for the breast cancer cause, players and on-field personnel wore the symbolic pink ribbon on their uniforms along with pink wrist bands. Commemorative dugout lineup cards were also pink.

The Honorary Bat Girl Contest was introduced in 2009 to raise additional awareness and support for the annual Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer initiative celebrated on Mother’s Day.

Candidate for short term in Congress seeks signatures to get on ballot

By Evan Smith

A former Lynnwood Councilwoman plans to file for an unusual office in an unusual way.

The office is the last month of Jay Inslee’s term in Congress from the old 1st District.

Former Councilwoman Lisa Utter plans to file for the position next week by submitting signatures collected from voters rather than by paying a filing fee.

The position has been vacant since Inslee resigned to run for governor.

The special election is needed because only voters in the old district can vote to fill the position. Voters in the newly drawn districts will vote for full-term positions in their new districts.

Voters in Shoreline and the north part of Lake Forest Park will get ballots for the short term in the old 1st District and for the new 7th District.

Other parts of the old 1st District are in the new 1st, 2nd and 6th districts.

If elected to the short term, Utter would serve from the Dec. 6 certification of the November election until the term ends Jan. 3.

She served on the Lynnwood Council from 1998 to 2009, when she gave up her position for an unsuccessful campaign for mayor.

Utter, who will run as a Democrat, is trying to collect the 1,740 signatures needed to place her name on the ballot, in lieu of paying the $1,740 filing fee. The filing deadline is Friday, May 18.

Utter has a website where voters can get petitions.

She said Thursday that she has already collected many of the signatures and that she hoped for good weekend weather to get the rest.

Utter said that she was running because no other candidates have expressed an interest.
“We need someone credible to represent the 1st District, especially now, because important budget votes will be taken in December,” she said in a press release. “We must protect funding for basic human services and other vital programs. The budget agreement that was negotiated last year causes me deep concern."

The position will appear on the August primary ballot, with the top two vote getters advancing to the November general election.

The old 1st District includes Shoreline, the north part of Lake Forest Park, other parts of North King County, South Snohomish County and part of Kitsap County.

Utter has served on the boards of the Puget Sound Regional Council, Sound Transit and Community Transit.

She also has served on Snohomish County boards that distribute and monitor federal grants for economic development, community services and emergency food and shelter.

Broadway Bound Presents RENT: School Edition

Young actors from across the region are currently in rehearsal for Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre’s production of RENT: School Edition. Performances will run Thursday, May 31 through Sunday, June 3 at Seattle Musical Theatre in Magnuson Park. RENT: School Edition is a lightly modified version of the Tony Award winning musical.

Among the actors participating are several students from the Shoreline area, including Charlotte Berkman and Aislinn Brunner.

Based on the full version of RENT – itself based on Puccini’s La Boheme – RENT: School Edition follows the lives of a group of friends for a year. These starving artists, living on the Lower East Side of New York City, experience the triumphs and tribulations of life: Mark, resident filmmaker; Maureen, eccentric performance artist and Mark’s ex-girlfriend; Joanne, Maureen’s new lover; Roger, Mark’s roommate; Mimi, an exotic dancer and Roger’s new love; Collins, a computer genius and friend of Mark and Roger; Angel, Collins’ lover, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former friend who left the group to marry a member of the socioeconomic elite.

With the assistance of writer/composer Jonathan Larson’s estate, RENT: School Edition was thoughtfully adapted from the full version. The changes mostly entail the extraction of one song (“Contact”) and some language adjustment. However, the mature themes remain. Many of the young actors, ranging in age from 12 to 17 years old, were fans of the show prior to becoming involved in the production. These actors have been tackling difficult issues head on as they rehearse. Some, like the realities of living with AIDS, are completely foreign. Others, like the intricacies of friendships and being comfortable in your own skin, hit closer to home.

Tickets to RENT: School Edition are $17.50 and are available online or by phone at 1-800-838-3006. For more information about RENT: School Edition and Broadway Bound, visit the website

Modern Streambank Protection and Landscaping Techniques

McAleer Creek

Do you have a stream in your back yard?

Lake Forest Park Environmental Quality Commission is sponsoring a free workshop on “Modern Streambank Management for Homeowners,” in partnership with Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation and StreamKeepers of Lake Forest Park.

People with streambank property are especially welcome to attend, and all others with an interest in healthy streams are also invited.  People from neighboring cities are more than welcome to attend.

Many traditional techniques of streambank landscaping cause problems for streamside property owners including flood damage to their retaining walls, and erosion of their property.  In addition, old fashioned landscaping can cause landowners to unknowingly harm salmon populations, even though they want to help.

Streambank property owners are also presently subjected to problems caused by their neighbor’s landscaping including: increased erosive energy from upstream retaining walls; increased flooding caused by downstream constrictions of the channel; and lack of enjoyable wildlife caused by minimal streamside vegetation.

The workshops will help streamside landowners understand how they can minimize damage to their own property, avoid damaging their neighbors’ property, and help the region’s efforts to restore salmon.

The workshops will start with information on stream ecology and watershed science, and progress to improved landscaping and streambank protection techniques.

There will be two identical classroom workshops, so people can choose a time that works best for them.  In addition there will be a Saturday afternoon field trip to view several types of streambank structures, to generate ideas about how streambanks at home can be improved.

  • 1st classroom workshop: Thursday May 31 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
              OR
  • 2nd classroom workshop: Saturday June 9th from 10:00 AM to Noon.

Field trip: Saturday June 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
Participants from either workshop will be welcome on the field trip.

The workshops will be held in the Council Chambers at the Lake Forest Park City Hall, and the field trip will depart from City Hall.

The workshops will be taught by Tom Murdoch, Executive Director of Adopt-A-Stream Foundation.  Tom is one of the founders of Adopt-A-Stream; he has decades of experience in developing concepts and techniques for stream restoration.  He also has extensive teaching experience in aquatic ecology, and vast experience coordinating volunteer stream enhancement workers.

This Saturday, May 12, an anticipated 1,700 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Shoreline to help protect vulnerable children and women from human trafficking.

World Concern’s annual “Free Them” 5k Run/Walk to stop human trafficking will be held at its headquarters, 19303 Fremont Ave. N., and aims to raise awareness and funds for anti-trafficking programs.

Human trafficking is rampant in many parts of the world. According to UNICEF, as many as 2 million children are entrapped in the global commercial sex trade. But Puget Sound residents are taking action to help stop this horrific crime by participating in the 5k.

Last year, more than 1,000 people participated, raising $107,000 toward World Concern’s programs, which provide education, job skills and safe havens for victims of trafficking in Southeast Asia.

Special guest Jenny Simmons of the band Addison Road will perform songs and share stories about how protecting children is a critical cause to her personally.

The family-friendly event begins at 9:30 a.m. with a 5k fun run/walk, followed by activities for children, booths, prizes for top fundraisers, food and more. Most importantly, the event will raise awareness about the plight of those affected by modern-day slavery.

Volunteers from the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties will build 15 free wheelchair ramps for low-income disabled homeowners on May 19 as part of their 19th annual Rampathon event.  Since 1993, teams from the Master Builders Association have constructed 320 wheelchair ramps.

Ramp captain Joseph Irons, of Iron Brothers Construction, and his team will construct a free wheelchair access ramp for Jan Lunak of Shoreline, who has multiple sclerosis.

Art Castilleja, the 2012 Rampathon chair explains, “Builder captains will lead their teams in constructing access ramps giving recipients the ability to get in and out of their homes with greater ease and flexibility.  For many of them, it will be the first time in years they have not had to rely on family or friends just to get in and out of their homes.”

According to Castilleja, each ramp represents a unique challenge for the team as they adapt design and construction to the existing landscape and the recipient’s needs.

The Master Builders Care Foundation is the philanthropic non-profit arm of the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties.    Founded in 1909, the Master Builders Association is a trade association comprised of nearly 3,000 companies involved in the residential and light commercial construction industry. It is the nation’s oldest and largest local home building association affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders.

Shoreline Rotary Idol Talent Contest Fund Raiser

The Rotary Club of Shoreline is presenting "Shoreline Rotary Idol", a crazy, wonderful evening full of fun and entertainment on June 16, 2012 in the main dining room of Shoreline Community College.

Money raised by the event will go to local charities, including sending medically challenged children from Shoreline to Camp Korey, a camp set up for kids with special medical needs.

Rotary Idol is a local talent show that includes singing (individual and group), dancing, and comedy acts. Acts are critiqued by judges and winners chosen by audience vote. Besides the talent contest, there will be raffles, prize balloons, snacks, dessert, wine, and beer.

The judges are entertaining and keep the performers humble, until someone walks off with first prize, the tackiest trophy you've ever seen.

Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by contacting Lee Craig.

Shawn Ledford selected as Shoreline’s new Police Chief

New Shoreline police chief Shawn Ledford

City Manager Julie Underwood has selected Shawn Ledford of the King County Sheriff’s Office to be the City’s new Police Chief. Ledford replaces Dan Pingrey who has been promoted to Chief of the Patrol Operations Division of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Ledford has been with the King County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years, with his most recent position being Zone Commander of the Patrol Operations Division. Before that, Ledford was the Acting Division Chief for the Criminal Investigation Division. From 2001 to 2006, Ledford was the Police Chief for the City of Newcastle where he focused on improving community policing efforts and citizen engagement. In addition to the above positions, Ledford has also served as a patrol officer in Federal Way, a training officer and negotiator on the Hostage Negotiations Team and a detective in the Special Assault and Major Crimes Robbery/Homicide Units.

“I am excited to welcome Mr. Ledford to our team,” said Underwood. “I’m confident his experience and personal values are a good fit for Shoreline. In making my decision, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the selection process; their input was invaluable.”
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve the citizen’s of Shoreline and partnering with the community to keep the city and neighborhoods safe,” stated Ledford. “The highly skilled officers that make up the Shoreline Police Department are known for their professional excellence. I’m honored to be part of their team. During the selection process, the Shoreline Staff, City Leadership Team and City Manager made this an easy decision for me,” continued Ledford. “I look forward to working collaboratively with them to help the City achieve its goals and keep Shoreline a safe community."

The King County Sheriff’s Office submitted five candidates for consideration. Each candidate was interviewed by a panel of City and Police Department staff, the City’s Leadership Team and the City Manager. In addition, a community reception was held at City Hall to allow Shoreline residents an opportunity to meet and hear from all of the candidates.

Ledford is committed to building strong working relationships between the police and the community. “It is my practice that we should treat the public, or those we serve, in the same way we would expect our family or our friends to be treated,” stated Ledford. “The relationship with our citizens is paramount to the success of our organization. We need to keep them included in the process and keep them informed.”

Rather than administering its own police force, the City of Shoreline contracts with King County Sheriff’s Office for police services. Officers work for King County but are dedicated to Shoreline so they get to know the community. The police chief reports to the King County Sheriff and the Shoreline City Manager.

Ledford has a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and criminology from Western Washington University. His first day will be June 1.
