Coming to your primary ballot

Saturday, May 5, 2012

By Evan Smith

In ten days, we'll start candidate filing for ballot positions in the August primary election.
Here are the offices that we'll see on the August primary and November general election ballots:

Statewide – U.S. senator, governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, attorney general, state auditor, state lands commissioner, insurance commissioner, superintendent of public instruction and three positions on the state supreme court

The elections for governor, secretary of state, state auditor, attorney general and one supreme court position won't have incumbents on the ballot because Gov. Chris Gregoire, Secretary of State Sam Reed, Auditor Brian Sontagg and Supreme Court Justice Tom Chambers are retiring, and Attorney General Rob McKenna is running for governor.

Congress –the new 7th District, including all of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park; and a special election for the last month of Jay Inslee's term in the old 1st District, which includes most of the area.

Legislature – a Senate seat and both House seats in the 46th Legislative District, including Lake Forest Park; two House seats in the 32nd District, including Shoreline

Countywide – a short term for County sheriff, two positions on the Court of Appeals and 53 positions on the superior court; most of the Superior Court positions won’t be on the ballot because, when only one candidate files, that person gets the position without a vote.

Ridgecrest plant exchange, Seattle Tilth, and neighborhood meeting

Plant exchange
Photo by Carl Dinse
Plants lined the gym at Ridgecrest Elementary on Wednesday night, May 2, as members of the Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association met to exchange plant starts and hear from a Seattle Tilth speaker on pollinators in the garden.

Laura Matter from Seattle Tilth discussed insects in the garden and their role in carrying pollen from one plant to another. Even hornets have a role.

She talked about all the different kinds of bees and reminded the audience that pesticides kill the good along with the bad. When you destroy something in the garden, she said, you are simply providing an opportunity for something else to come in.

Aphids aren't all that bad and she suggested using a spray of water to knock them off the plant. She provides a beer trap for slugs in her garden - a cottage cheese container buried in the dirt with an inch aboveground to keep the beetles (good in a garden) from falling in. Keep about an inch of beer in the container and your slugs will die happy.

Ridgecrest held its annual meeting and elected officers for the next year: Chair - Stefanie Gendreau, Vice-chair Dick Nicholson, Secretary, Patty Hale, Treasurer, Phyllis Moll.

Seattle Musical Theatre Camp at Magnuson Park

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) has recreated its summer youth camp programming with a new name - SummerStock.

Now in their 35th Season, Seattle Musical Theatre has a long history of providing quality musical theatre experiences for youth.

Located in our beautiful Magnuson Park location, our youth program will support skill building and musical theatre experiences for students grades 2 -12. The SummerStock program will also offer training and opportunities to participate in Seattle Musical Theatre’s main stage productions next season.  No experience is necessary and scholarships are available.  Camp program leaders, Steven Fogle and Josh Anderson share over 25  years of experience as veteran performers , directors and instructors in theatre, dance, acting and vocal performance.

Primary level: Camp begins on July 9th with primary level camp.  This camp introduces budding performers in grades 2-4 to the vocal, dance, acting and technical elements with multiple fun and engaging activities.  The two week camp ends with a performance for friends and family on the Seattle Musical Theatre stage.

Middle level: Beginning July 23rd, students in grades 5-8 are supported in unlocking their passion and potential for the performing arts in middle level camp.  Using material from multiple musicals from Cats to Wicked, this class will provide more in depth instruction on audition, dance, acting, and vocal techniques and explore costume and set design.  Friends and family are treated to a presentation on the final day.

High School: The Broadway legend Les MisĂ©rables (school edition) comes to our theatre this summer! High school age students will receive intensive training in musical theatre elements over a four week afternoon camp.  In addition to classes, they will venture on a complete production rehearsal process beginning with auditions and culminating in four community performances of Les MisĂ©rables (school edition).   Everyone is guaranteed a part, but opportunities are available for students interested in focusing on back stage or technical elements only.

Seattle Musical Theatre is located in Magnuson Park at 7120 62nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115.  Tuition for the primary camp is $295 and for the middle is $325. Each camp is two weeks long. The four week high school camp tuition is $495. Register online  or by calling 206-363-4807.
Registrations are processed upon receipt when accompanied by a $100 deposit and classes close when filled.  Tuition payment plans are available.

Shoreline to get a new police chief

City to appoint new Police Chief

Community invited to reception to meet candidates

Shoreline Police Chief Dan Pingrey has recently accepted a promotion within the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) and will be leaving the City of Shoreline on May 16, 2012. Pingrey has been promoted to Chief of KCSO’s Patrol Operations Division. The Patrol Operations Division is the largest division within the Sheriff’s Office and oversees all patrol operations for KCSO, including those for contract cities. Pingrey will be part of the Command Staff at the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Five finalists have been selected to move to the final round of interviews for the position of Police Chief. All applicants are members of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The five finalists are:
  • Captain Michelle Bennett, Chief of Police for the City of Maple Valley;
  • Captain Shawn Ledford, Zone Commander for the Patrol Operations Division and former Chief of Police for City of Newcastle;
  • Captain D.J. Nesel, 9-1-1 Communications Center Section Commander;
  • Captain Brad Thompson, Assistant Chief of Police for the City of Burien and former Chief of Police for the City of Sammamish; and
  • Major Jerrell Wills, East Precinct Commander.
Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of Shoreline staff, the City’s Leadership Team and City Manager Julie Underwood.

The City will also host a community reception for the public to meet the candidates on Tuesday, May 8 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at City Hall. This will be an opportunity for the community to meet and learn more about the candidates.

 Pingrey has been a familiar face in Shoreline for a long time. He has been the Chief of the Shoreline Police Department since 2008. Before becoming Chief, Pingrey also served as a sergeant from 1996 to 1998 and was Shoreline’s captain from 2005 to 2007. Pingrey has been with the King County Sheriff’s Office for 23 years after starting his career in Kirkland.

  “Dan has been a great asset to the City,” says Shoreline City Manager Julie Underwood. “We are sorry to see him go, but we are very excited for him and congratulate him on his promotion!”
  “I truly have enjoyed working with our citizens, officers and City staff to make Shoreline a safe community,” stated Pingrey. “The candidates that have applied for the Chief’s position have a tremendous amount of experience and are excited about the opportunity to work in the City.”

Rather than administering its own police force, the City of Shoreline contracts with King County Sheriff’s Office for police services. Although Officers work for King County, they are assigned to work specifically in Shoreline and focus on building relationships with the Shoreline community. The police chief reports to the King County Sheriff and the Shoreline City Manager.

Two farmers' markets for Shoreline - Lake Forest Park

Corrected 05-03-2012 3:50pm

LFP Famers' Market. Photo by Steven H. Robinson
By Diane Hettrick

Our farmers' markets were included in a column by Rebekah Denn "All You Can Eat" in The Seattle Times.

"The Seattle area will have at least one new venue this year when the Shoreline Farmers Market debuts June 16."  It will run on Saturdays, 10am to 3pm.

The Lake Forest Park Farmers' Market opens on Mother's Day, May 9, and will run on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm.

It isn't just vegetables at the markets. Rebekah says, "I'm glad to see a new ice cream maker, Social Ice Cream, whose owner trained with one of my favorites, Parfait. Social will be at the Lake Forest Park and Shoreline markets."

Rebekah reports on several markets which have closed, which points up how fortunate we are to have two markets within reach.

According to Brendan Lemkin, founder of the Shoreline market, he expects the two markets to complement each other, rather than compete.

Other people will have two options to shop over the weekend, once the Shoreline market opens.

The Lake Forest Park market has buskers, featured entertainers, and special events. Vendors sell meat, eggs, flowers, and ice cream, in addition to fruits and vegetables. Every vendor is organic. Several booths sell ready to eat food - last year there was a choice of hot dogs, crepes, and soup - not to mention ice crea - and tables are provided. Some Sundays have specific children's activities.

The market is an experience. a family entertainment. and a great place to people and dog-watch on a Sunday afternoon.
