Inquest ordered into fatal police shooting of armed man in Shoreline

Fact-finding hearing is routine to determine causes and circumstances of any death involving a member of law enforcement while in performance of duties.

King County Executive Dow Constantine today ordered an inquest into the fatal shooting of David Albrecht of Shoreline by two Shoreline Police officers on August 10, 2011.

Police responding to Albrecht’s home in the 700 block of North 200th Street say they found a bloodied woman who told them her boyfriend was inside and was suicidal. Police say the 22-year old man emerged from the home armed with a shotgun and a knife, and did not respond to commands to drop the gun.

King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg recommended the inquest after his office reviewed materials from the King County Sheriff’s Office, which conducted the investigation. The city of Shoreline contracts with the King County Sheriff for police services.

Inquests are fact-finding hearings conducted before a six-member jury. Under a standing Executive Order they are routinely called to determine the causes and circumstances of any death involving a member of any law enforcement agency within King County while in the performance of his or her duties.

Inquests provide transparency into law enforcement actions so the public may have all the facts established in a court of law. The ordering of an inquest should carry no other implication. Inquest jurors answer a series of interrogatories to determine the significant factual issues involved in the case, and it is not their purpose to determine whether any person or agency is civilly or criminally liable.

The order signed by the Executive requests King County District Court Presiding Judge Corinna Harn to assign a judge to set a date and conduct the inquest.

The ordering of inquests is a function vested in the county executive under the King County Code.

Kathi Bond
In the Valley of Fire
Kathi Bond f feels a connection to, and passion for stone. Her creatures emerge from the stone taking on its colors, textures, inclusions. The stone’s history and appearance can also remind her of different places. Kathi says, “After mastering four languages, she is happiest letting the stone speak to her to do her most creative work!”

Heather Carr
“Shto Eta”, 16 x 20
Heather Carr’s paintings are inspired by manga and street art. Her imagined subjects can be cute and playful, as well as melancholic and the macabre. She often signs her paintings in Russian, recalling the time spent in Russia during high school and college. When she creates art, “I feel unstoppable, and can’t wait to see where the journey takes me.”

Jean Hughes
“Potholes Lake with Sandhill Cranes”

Music therapy increases focus for memory impaired

Music therapy group

By Wendy Zieve

Community members at Aegis Callahan House, a facility for the memory impaired located in Shoreline, enjoy making music each month with Rebecca Wu, a board certified music therapist who specializes in elderly music groups. Wu uses tone chimes – an instrument that makes a sound similar to a hand bell but is smaller, and gets the seniors to participate together, focus on hand-eye coordination and attention span.

The public is invited to attend a workshop on May 4th with Dr. James Gardiner, a Neuropsychologist from South Dakota, to learn music therapy techniques to improve memory, concentration and executive function for patients with traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s/dementia or stroke. May 5th an all day symposium “Music Therapy: Emerging Trends in Research and Clinical Applications” will feature Dr. Gardiner as a keynote speaker, then break-out sessions with a variety of speakers will cover topics of music for pain management, autism, mental health needs, and other cognitive, emotional and/or physical challenges. These events will be on the campus of Seattle Pacific University, which offers a bachelors degree in music therapy.

Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.

Information on the Music Therapy Symposium 2012.
For information on music therapy, visit Music Therapy and for the local professional organization, Music Therapy Association of Washington.

Richmond Beach Library
Presented by Thomas H. Pruiksma.

Ages 5 and older. This performance combines magic with poetry to explore the power of words. Discover how your imagination can transform ordinary objects into magical props for storytelling and poetry.

The Poet’s Magic of Thomas H. Pruiksma combines poetry with the art of illusion to explore the hidden wonders of our daily lives. It is a performance as much about the magic of words as about the marvels we experience when we can see the world as a poem. There’s nothing in all of magic, or all of poetry, quite like it . . .

Shoreline Community College Softball can't survive Bellevue's homeruns

The Bellevue College Lady Bulldogs hit 8 homeruns on the day as BC swept the Lady Dolphin Softball Team at Shoreview Park on Tuesday. BC hit 4 homeruns in each game.

In the first game. BC stuck for 3 runs in the first inning on a 3 run homerun and another run in 3rd before putting SCC away in the top of 7th inning when they hit 3 homeruns for a 5 run inning. SCC scored two runs in the bottom of 7th but SCC struggled offensively the whole game, managing only 3 hits and only two runners to second base before the bottom of 7th.

In the second game, Bellevue exploded for 12 runs in the first three innings, 6 in the first inning while hitting 4 homeruns over that 3 inning span. SCC tried to battle with BC, scoring 5 runs themselves in the first two innings but could not keep the offensive pace up. Alia Kelly came in to shutout BC over the final four innings but the damage had already been done.

Vallen Brewer and Alia Kelly hit doubles for SCC and Nikki Reyling hit a homerun but the BC relief pitcher came in to hold SCC to only 1 run over the final 5 innings. Reyling and Kelly had 2 hits each for the Lady Dolphins.

SCC is now 8-9-2 on the season, 3-3 in the NWAACC Northern Region. SCC plays host to Skagit Valley College on Friday at 1:00 PM at the Shoreview Park field. Bellevue is 19-2 overall and 6-0 in the region. The Bulldogs are ranked 4th in the NWAACC.

Pet Food Drive at Key Bank

Hungry

The Richmond Highlands Key Bank at 17500 Aurora Ave N in Shoreline and the Kenmore Key Bank at 7830 NE Bothell Way
Kenmore, are participating in the Seattle Humane Society Furry Friends Fund Drive, which kicked off April 11, 2012 and runs through May 18.

KeyBank has set up a special account to collect funds to benefit Seattle Humane's Pet Food Bank, which feeds more than 1,500 animals in need every month. Right now the shelves of the Pet Food Bank are bare, and 11,000 pounds of pet food are needed for delivery each month to local senior centers, low-income housing complexes, food banks and individual homes.

Visit any participating KeyBank location to make a donation. Click here to find other KeyBank locations or click here to make a donation to Seattle Humane directly (choose "Furry Friends Drive" under gift designation).

Here's another way to help: Purchase tickets to see CATS at the Paramount Theatre April 17-20 and, in partnership with Q13 and KeyBank’s Furry Friends Fund drive, Broadway Across America will donate $10 from every ticket to Seattle Humane and other local animal charities.

CATS tickets supporting Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank can be purchased here. Use the promotion code: FurryFriends.

Shorewood's Team Pronto Robots - the end of a season

By Wes Proudlove, Team Advisor

Shorewood's own Team Pronto Robots has come to an end of another season. We have had our ups and downs but though it all we have learned valuable lessons. "No idea is too small," "team work will always best individual effort," "if you have fun in what you are doing it's no longer work," "what you learn in robotics relates to everything in life," and most importantly - "math and science can be fun if you just add a robot into the formulas."

Spokane was our last shot this year to make it to the World Championships. Hank (our robot) played hard and had some great triumphs but when the teams were chosen we did not come out on top.

Team Pronto took time during the event to go help other teams program robots, help with construction problems and show a rookie team how all the endless piles of paperwork can be gotten though without much hair loss (I lost my hair before Team Pronto).

Hank balanced multiple times on the teeter totter under the capable hands of Austin Buchanan. Austin even got Hank to balance while resting on top of another robot - that's some crazy skills. Human full field baskets were made by Max Hundhausen, AJ Harpring and Nick Teeters, not a easy shot at all to make. Of the 16 members of Team Pronto at the event, 12 got to take the field at one time or another in front of thousands of screaming fans.

Once again Team Pronto's own Katy Kuznetsova won Safety Star of the Day on Friday. This is an award only given to one team per day at the events. Katy is now a 3 time winner and has hopes of winning it all, come next year's events.

As head mentor and head advisor, I would like to give my thanks to the students for filling my life with so much excitement, entertainment, and thoughts of what the future holds.

A special thanks must must must be given to the other two Shorewood teachers who accompanied us on our trip to Spokane. Veronica Cook: for always setting the students on the right path, sometimes with soft spoken, kind words; other times a much harder nudge. Veronica was also the official team photo journalist taking hundreds of pictures of our students, Hank and mentors. Thanks to Tammy Ceesay for all the smiles, laughs, kind words and compassion for the students and their well being.

Sorry, Tammy, that you had to put up with the students' feet on the trip over. It smelled like skunks and we will have to cure that for next year. It was such a pleasure to have you two along, it really made my time much more enjoyable. Tammy and Veronica, you have been now indoctrinated as Team Pronto members. There is no going back. You're like a zombie but much happier with fewer body parts falling off.

A special thanks to mentors Daryl Mondor, Eric Holton, Lee White, Patrick Chiang, and Feng Gao who all traveled and stayed at their own expense to help out our students and be a part of the craziness.

Next year is fast approaching and who knows - you too could become a Team Pronto addict like us. There is no cure for the robotic fever. Skunk smell can't even keep us away.
