King County and nine cities collaborate to respond to climate change

At its Monday meeting, March 19, the Metropolitan King County Council gave its unanimous approval to a unique County-City partnership designed to enhance the effectiveness of regional efforts on climate change and sustainability efforts.

In June 2011, King County and several of its cities introduced and pledged their support for a new partnership – the King County-Cities Climate Collaboration. The focus of the Collaboration is to pool both resources and knowledge in the effort to combat the impact of climate change. The adopted ordinance calls for the Executive to enter into an interlocal agreement finalizing the County’s participation in the Collaboration.

The County and the cities involved— Redmond, Renton, Tukwila, Shoreline, Seattle, Mercer Island, Kirkland, Issaquah and Snoqualmie—have pledged to commit funds and staffing to the Collaborative. They will be used to support and enhance projects and programs in focus areas such as green building, using and producing renewable energy, sustainability outreach and education, and alternative transportation.
“Climate change impacts the environment, health, and quality of life of our entire region regardless of jurisdictional boundaries, which is why cooperation and collaboration are critical,” said Councilmember Bob Ferguson, a co-sponsor of the legislation. “By working together, we can do more to address climate change and become more sustainable.”

As the collaboration develops, City and county staff will work to share local best practices and relevant resources, collaborate on related projects and programs, and support regional efforts such as the Growth Management Planning Council’s work to set countywide greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

Shorecrest Band wins award in Limerick International Band Competition

Shorecrest Band named Best International Band in Limerick, Ireland
Photo courtesy Washington Cultural Exchange and Shoreline Schools

They've done it again - the Shorecrest Band, pipers, and dancers, marched in the International Band competition in the city of Limerick, County Limerick, the third largest city in Ireland, on Sunday, March 18, the day after marching in two St. Patrick's Day parades.

They were named the Best International Band and had their photo on the front page of one of the local papers, The Limerick Leader.

"A TOUCH of spring weather helped to bring a crowd of more than 40,000 people into the city this Sunday for the International Band Championship.
"And they were treated to one of the largest parades in recent years, as 20 bands from as far afield as the USA and Russia marched down O'Connell Street."
...
"Participation in the International Band Parade - now in its 42nd year - is significantly up on previous years, with more than 1,000 musicians taking part this year."

They won the title of Best Youth Band in the Dublin parade, an award they also won in 2008, as they marched through streets lined with literally millions of people and a parade route so narrow they sometimes had to angle the team banner to get it through.

In their second parade of the day Saturday, they marched in The Celbridge Parade in County Kildare. There's no word of any awards, but their picture is on the parade webpage (on the upper left).

March 2012 a great month for art with 5,000 ceramic artists in town

"Return of the Watchers" by Ed Neff
will be on display as part of the Clay Club exhibit
at Shoreline Community College
By Ed Neff

For the first time, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) is being held in Seattle, March 28-31.

Approximately 5,000 ceramics artists, suppliers, advertisers and collectors will be descending on the greater Seattle area. In over 183 venues — stretching from Bellingham to Tacoma, and in venues ranging from art galleries to the windows at Nordstrom and locally at Shoreline Community College — all are showcasing works of clay.

As a ceramics student at Shoreline Community College, I could hardly wait to see what the rest of the world was doing with ceramics. This was my chance to meet and see artists from all over the nation.

After looking over all the things to do I was a bit overwhelmed and not sure just where to start. There will be so many galleries, shows, and receptions. The convention floor itself will have over 150 exhibitions, and an expected 5000 visitors.

I have decided to visit a hand picked list of galleries and then take some tours. This website has a complete list of all the action.

Below are a few of the places I want to make sure and see.

Pottery Northwest, in addition to their teaching programs and great workshops, will have other venues. During the weekend before the 2012 NCECA conference, Pottery Northwest is hosting four exceptional artists in demonstration workshops.
  • Gail Nichols is known for her unique firing method.
  • Walter Keeler has produced a wonderful body of salt glazed stoneware.
  • Beth Cavener Stichter is one of the most exciting figurative artists in the country.
  • Anne Drew will be taking time from her residency in Germany as a Chancellor’s Fellow to share her considerable sculpture talent.
Washington State Convention Center:
NCECA (3/1–3/31) Conference exhibits will be open to the public, displaying new and collected works by national and Seattle area artist.

Bellevue Arts Museum: (3/1–5/27)

Rich Lawson. Raku pot.
Raku on the Edge at Seattle Pottery Supply

Mar 24-31, Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm; Tue 8:30am-9pm; Sat 9am-3pm. Reception Mar 27, 6-9pm.

Seattle Design Center: (3/26–3/31) an exhibit of contemporary ceramic artists focused on ceramic heads, including Seattleites Tip Toland and Doug Jeck.

Frye Art Museum: (Through 4/8) monumental clay forms on skeletons of wood and rope drying and cracking revealing their innards.

Henry Art Gallery: (Through 5/6) a look at how Seattle ceramists in the 1960s and '70s called traditional clay forms into question.

Shoreline Community College: The College will have three locations to view ceramic art. In the main gallery as you enter the school, in the library, in the 2000 building lobby and in the ceramics studio.

The galleries that I have decided to visit will give a good overview of the ceramic art world from oversize figurative forms to three inch tea cups.

WeatherWatcher: Thunder snow over Shoreline, Lake Forest Park

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Tonight, March 18, 2012 at about 8:40pm there was a bright flash of lightening, very quickly followed by a loud thunder. Due to the time between the lightening and the thunder I am estimating that the lightening was about half a mile away from Aurora Village (where I was during this time). It takes about 11 seconds for sound to travel one mile. There was about 5 seconds from the lightening before I was able to hear the thunder.

I looked at the radar as soon as I got to my weather station around 9pm and noticed that a convergence band has formed, which explains the thunderstorm development. The band has since drifted north to north Edmonds and Everett, and spans all the way to the Cascades. It is still active, so I can't rule out the possibility of more lightening and possible snow/hail for the remainder of the evening.

We currently have a cool moist northwest flow of air moving into the region which is what has caused this convergence to set up. Temperatures are hovering just barely above freezing in the areas that the convergence band has hit, everywhere else in the region appears to be running around 36-37ÂşF. By comparison we are at 34ÂşF.

Thunder snow - crunchy underfoot

This band caused some spotty accumulations even on roads, some places have over an inch of snow mixed with snow pellets, and hail. Roads are very slick and as the low temperature is expected to drop below freezing tonight we will have some pretty tricky road conditions for the morning commute, so be careful out there. We're not out of the woods of winter just yet!

Shoreline Youth Jam 2012 cancelled - not enough performers

Zoology, 2009 Youth Jam

SHORELINE YOUTH JAM 2012, the City-wide youth musical talent competition scheduled for Friday, April 6th, at the Shoreline Community College PUB has been cancelled.

Organizers cited a low quantity of entries this year as the reason for cancellation. After a wonderful program of performers in its first year of 2011, the 2012 open competition for any musical performer or group 18 years old and under residing in Shoreline, received an insufficient number of entries to support the competition format by the submittal deadline of March 16, 2012.

Shoreline Youth Jam Committee organizers from several Shoreline neighborhoods, working with support from City of Shoreline and Shoreline Community College staff, plan to meet later this year to determine what the future of Youth Jam may be. It is hoped that an event of this kind, showcasing the musical talents of Shoreline’s youth in an open format, may return in the future.

Contact the organizers and/or City of Shoreline staff with your ideas for supporting a Youth Jam style event, and/or other possible venues for the organization of local performances to showcase the musical talents of Shoreline youth.

Redistricting can proceed for this year despite Court challenge

By Evan Smith

We’ll vote in the newly drawn 32nd and 46th legislative districts and the new 7th Congressional District now that the State Supreme Court has said that elections officials can proceed with the new districts despite a lawsuit.

The Supreme Court ordered a delayed hearing on the legality of the plan submitted by the State Redistricting Commission and ordered that this year's elections proceed under the Commission's plan.

The Court agreed last week with elections officials who had argued that they needed the certainty of the commission’s plan in time to conduct candidate filing May 14-18. Chief Justice Barbara Madsen wrote that the court couldn’t reach a decision in time.

Opponents of the plan say that it unnecessarily divides Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and many other cities around the state between two or more legislative or congressional districts, and that it has many districts, like the 32nd unnecessarily crossing county lines.

Opponents also say that some districts unnecessarily favor incumbents and that the Court easily could have ruled before the filing period.

The Court’s ruling means that Shoreline voters will vote in the new 32nd Legislative District along with Lynnwood, Woodway, south Edmonds and part of northwest Seattle, that Lake Forest Park and Kenmore will vote in the 46th Legislative District along with northeast Seattle, and that both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park will vote in the 7th Congressional District along with Edmonds, Woodway and most of Seattle.

The Court still could rule that the redistricting scheme is illegal, meaning new districts for the 2014 election.

For the Birds: American Robin - the early bird gets the worm

American Robins start singing just before dawn, and are seen running across the lawn early in the morning, suddenly stopping and tilting their heads looking, not hearing, for those tasty worms. Even though we see robins all the time, chances are they aren’t the same ones. Most here in the winter go further north to breed, and the ones who breed here probably came from Oregon or California. Even its name, Turdus Migratorius, recognizes this songbird’s short-distance movements.

Robins are one of the first birds most people learn to recognize, and their size is often used as a reference, as in, “Larger than a chickadee, smaller than a robin.” When you really look at robins, you’ll see that they are a pretty bird, with black stripes on a white throat, and white feathers around the eyes. Females are paler than males, and juveniles have spots on their buff breasts.

Robins are social and feed in small flocks, with larger flocks at night, and when migrating. In addition to worms, they eat volumes of beetle grubs and caterpillars. Robins watch vigilantly for predators like cats or hawks, and you can often see a robin on guard duty while others are bathing.

Robins and, unfortunately, parasitic Brown-headed Cowbirds, benefit from the opened forests and forest edges created by human expansion. Cowbirds don’t make nests, but place their eggs in others nests to be raised by their new hosts. Robins have learned to reject those eggs.

The female makes the nest, coating it with mud and grass before laying three to five blue eggs. Jays, crows, squirrels and snakes like their eggs. Both parents loudly and boldly protect their eggs and their fledglings until they can forage on their own. Even so, less than 25 % of each year’s broods survive to see their first November. Cats, hawks, window strikes and pesticides that poison the worms and berries Robins eat, take their tolls. The average lifespan of American Robins is two years, but some live to 10-13 years.

When you hear cheery morning singing, look for the early bird running across your lawn, stopping to grab a worm. Robins also love berries, and fruits, so plant a Serviceberry tree, and add a shallow bird bath, and you will be rewarded with American Robins.
