Quick-Start Shoreline Business Workshop, Tuesday, February 28th

Sunday, February 26, 2012

February is designated as Marketing Month at QuickStart Shoreline.

To assist community businesses in growing their sales, all of February’s Quick-Start Shoreline Business Lunch and Learn Workshops will focus on marketing for today’s economy.

Join us for our February Marketing workshop 2/28/2012 this Tuesday entitled "Putting Action Marketing into practice"

The Tuesday Lunch and Learn for start-up business owners, February 28th, 12 noon to 1:30 pm at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Avenue N, is presented by Shoreline Community College Small Business Accelerator and the City of Shoreline. The sessions are free; bring a brown bag lunch.

A series of four workshops titled “Removing the Marketing Roadblocks” and presented by Master Marketer, Daniel Singley, is scheduled for each Tuesday in February from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at the Shoreline City Hall. The program is free and will provide CEO’s, Business Owners and Managers a proven strategy for making better marketing decisions in an ever-changing marketplace.

Daniel Singley
The program is based on the Action Marketing Technology™ developed by Singley. Each week a key marketing component will be presented with coaching on proper implementation. “This is a hands-on program for developing effective go-to-market strategies that get the customer to respond,” Singley says.

In 2011 overall marketing effectiveness dropped, Singley reports. “It’s a trend that will continue for companies that rely on traditional approaches,” Singley says. “Companies rethinking the process are reversing these trends and seeing new opportunities emerge.”

The Quick-Start Shoreline Business Lunch and Learn Workshop is presented in partnership with the Shoreline Community College Business Accelerator program and open to everyone and Singley recommends the program to anyone promoting a message in today’s marketplace.

The last session of the series “Removing the Marketing Roadblocks” will be presented on February 28 from 12-noon to 1:30pm at the Shoreline City Hall. 17500 Midvale Ave N. Shoreline WA 98133. Admission is free and you may bring a brown-bag lunch or snack.

BECU celebrates grand opening of new Shoreline office with donation to Shoreline Schools Foundation

BECU grand opening at Gateway Plaza

On Tuesday, February 28, at 11:30am, BECU will celebrate the grand opening of a new Neighborhood Financial Center (NFC) at 18336 Aurora Ave, Suite 109, Shoreline. The new location is at Gateway Plaza near Starbucks and Bartells.

Representatives from the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce will be on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony, which will be followed by Erin Vautier, manager of BECU’s Shoreline location, presenting a check in the amount of $500 to Shoreline Public Schools Foundation in support of their efforts to ensure that the basic educational needs of the students in the community are met.

The new 2,000 square foot location has five consultant desks, two ATMs with 24 hour access, and two Online Banking Kiosks to better serve members. In addition, members can make an appointment with an Investment Advisor to review their current retirement accounts as well as discuss long term goals. Members can use the location to establish accounts, apply for loans and perform financial transactions -- including free ATM, online and telephone banking services, with staff assistance, if needed.

“Our move to the new location was in response to the growing needs of our members in the area. With approximately 30,000 members in the area, our previous location inside of the nearby Safeway grocery store did not afford us the room to meet the needs of our membership.” said Erin Vautier, BECU’s Manager of the Shoreline location.
"Historically, BECU was open only to Boeing employees and their families. Now anyone in the state is eligible to join, and this new location will allow us to continue to grow within the Shoreline community.”

As with BECU’s other Neighborhood Financial Centers, the new Shoreline location will be staffed Monday thru Friday, 9am – 6pm, and Saturday, 9am – 1pm.

Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, BECU is a not-for-profit credit union owned by the members. Profits are returned to the members in the form of better rates and fewer fees. With more than 750,000 members and more than $9.9 billion in assets, BECU is the largest credit union in Washington and one of the top five financial cooperatives in the country. BECU currently operates over 40 locations in the Puget Sound region. All Washington state residents are eligible to join.

Shoreline’s Judi MacRae among civic educators honored by the Senate

Judi Macrae
OLYMPIA – The importance of civic education and the men and women who teach our state’s students about their government took center stage Monday, February 19, 2012.

Civic Education Day was held in the Legislative Building to honor those who teach civics and to create awareness about its importance.

“In order to have a truly representative democracy, Americans must have a thorough understanding of the process,” said Sen. Maralyn Chase, D-Shoreline, who sponsored a resolution commemorating the day. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the teachers here today who are being honored for their outstanding commitment to civics education.”

Nine finalists and two winners were honored as the Washington State Legislature's Civic Educators of the Year for 2012. Among the finalists was Judi MacRae of Shoreline.

MacRae teaches at Madrona School in Edmonds. Last year she worked with 4th-6th graders to introduce and lobby legislation through the process which encourages civil rights education. The students wrote letters, testified via the internet during a hearing on the bill and many of them were present when Gov. Chris Gregorie signed Senate Bill 5174 into law.

“Ms. MacRae proved to her students that they truly can have an impact on government,” Chase said. “It’s a great lesson not just for students, but for all of us.”

Gothard Sisters rock the house at Third Place Commons

The Gothard Sisters performed at Third Place Commons Friday night

By Jerry Pickard

Friday evening The Gothard Sisters performed Irish music and Dance on the Third Place Commons Stage. They were very entertaining and drew a large crowd.

Twins Greta and Willow and younger sister Solana appeared in costume playing Fiddle, Guitar and Bodhran. The girls danced through most of their songs as they played. Little children lined the stage through the concert and little dancers tried to keep up with the girls through the evening.

For a change of pace, the girl performed a flamenco dance.

Near the end of the evening they played Charlie Daniels' version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Who owns 145th?

Corrected / updated 2-26-2012 8:30pm

By Brian Doennebrink

At their meeting next Monday, February 27, the Shoreline City Council may take the first step towards improving 145th. The street interests Shoreline due to the possibility of a future light rail station in the vicinity of I-5. 130th, 145th, and 155th were identified by Sound Transit as possible locations between Northgate and 185th Street stations.

The problem with 145th Street is ownership. The City of Seattle owns the eastbound lanes, the westbound lanes are King County’s, and WSDOT’s involved with the operations for the portion that’s a state highway. Shoreline, on the other hand, only gets the impacts!

As the staff report notes, “The only way improvements to 145th Street will be untaken is if the City of Shoreline instigates, designs, and constructs them.”

The City of Seattle and King County are interested in relinquishing jurisdiction over 145th, meaning that Shoreline has an opportunity to annex the right-of-way. However, there are these annual costs that total just over $150,000/year:

  • Public safety response costs : $18,000+
  • Annual street operations and maintenance costs: $60,000
  • Twelve signalized intersections: $24,000 and eventual replacement costs
  • Approximately 150 street lights: annual electrical costs of $30,000
  • Stormwater maintenance: $21,766

If and when the road is widened, to in part handle the increased traffic to and from a light rail station: higher traffic enforcement and maintenance costs, and presumed removal of “retaining walls, structures, rockeries, and fences” that are in the right-of-way.

According to the staff report, 31,793 trips per day is used in the I-5 to 15th NE segment, about 25,000/day east and – to Aurora – west of that, below 14,000 west of Aurora. Improvements on 145th, anticipated to be strongly grant-funded, might include three-lane re-channelization and bike lanes between Greenwood and Aurora, double left turn lanes from southbound Aurora (to travel east on 145th), a five-lane cross-section between Aurora and I-5, a four or five lane cross-section east of the freeway, sidewalk and lighting improvements, transit enhancements, and much more.

The discussion item is 9 (a) on the City Council’s agenda, their Monday meeting starting at 7:00 pm. Online, you can offer comments.

Put the 'mock' in democracy with the political satire of The Capitol Steps at NSPAC

The Capitol Steps will play at NS PAC

The Capitol Steps - Election Year 2012 - March 9 at NPAC in Bothell

The election year is heating up - and so is the comedy! The Capitol Steps bring their hilarious music and political satire to the Northshore Performing Arts Center (18125 92nd Ave. NE, Bothell) on Friday March 9 at 8:00 pm.

This Washington-based troupe of Congressional staffers turned songwriters "put the mock in democracy" with pokes at the entire political spectrum!

The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn't find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Ticket prices are $40 for Adults, $35 for Seniors, and $25 for Youth under 17. Available online or by phone at (425) 984-2471.

Little girls were thrilled when American Girl opened last year at Alderwood Mall. Now it’s the boys’ turn.

LEGO plans to open a store at the mall this summer. It will be located near the kids’ play area.

“Children and families will be able to experience first-hand and hands-on the creativity and imagination that goes into LEGO building and be inspired by the over 4 million LEGO bricks that are in the store at any given time,” said LEGO VP Eric Wolfe.

The store will feature a “Pick-A-Brick Wall,” which offers the option to hand pick and purchase specific LEGO bricks and elements in a variety of colors and shapes in bulk. The “Living Room” is an interactive play area prominently positioned in the center of the store. Finally, a “Brand Ribbon” runs the circumference of the store, featuring LEGO model displays, company history and fun facts.

It will sell the full range of LEGO products, including traditional LEGO and DUPLO sets, games, and licensed lines such as Star Wars and Harry Potter.

The only other LEGO Store in Washington is in Bellevue Square.

Senior Center Computer Classes

Computer classes at Senior Center
By Jon Ann Cruver

Among the 65+ classes/groups at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is a wide variety of computer classes.

The Senior Center recently purchased three new computers with Windows 7 for the Computer Lab. Hook ups are also available for any student wishing to learn more about using their laptop. Laptop learners are encouraged to bring their own machines for a couple of reasons: they can be assured of a place in class and they will learn how to use their own machines. It should be noted that the classes are designed for PCs only at this time; no Macs please.

Classes are taught by Richard Harrison who has been teaching at the center for a number of years. Students like his comforting teaching style, especially those who are totally new to the computer world.

In addition to computers, there are two digital camera classes geared toward the compact point and shoot camera. Skilled photographer and traveler, Olin Darling, helps with the camera classes. The classes are taught on a regular rotating basis; the schedule for the months of March and April are:

BASIC COMPUTER ORIENTATION: For the very beginner with NO computer experience. Fee: $50 for members, $55 for nonmembers. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Mondays, March 5 and 12 OR
  • Mondays, April 2 and 9

CONTINUING BASICS: Email and Word Processing : Fee: $50 for members, $55 for nonmembers. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Mondays, March 19 and 26
  • No April classes

INTERMEDIATE: Acquire Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Word, sending email attachments: Fee: $50 for members $55 for nonmembers. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Thursday, March 8 and 15 OR
  • Thursday, April 5 and 12

ADVANCED: Learn to create an event flyer with MS Word, explore Skype and Facebook. Fee: $50, $55 nonmember. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Thursday, March 22 and; 29
  • No April classes

DIGITAL CAMERA CLASSES: Bring to both classes: 1. the download cable that came with your camera or a card reader such as a SanDisk, 2. your camera’s manual; 3.your battery powered up to take photos during class. For compact “point and shoot” cameras only!

DIGITAL CAMERA BASICS: For “point and shoot” digital camera owner: Learn about the ins and outs of your camera. Let our instructors unravel the manufactures manual so it makes sense. Fee: $25 for members $30 for nonmembers. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Wednesday, March 7 and 14 OR
  • Wednesday, April 4 and 11

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: Bring your camera! Learn how to get pictures from your camera to your computer after a lesson on how to take good photographs, not just “snap shots”. We’ll do a “photo shoot” around the campus, using the new photo tips given to you. Plan on a trip to a local store to learn how to use a photo processer. Fee: $25 for members $30 for nonmembers. All classes meet 2:00-4:00pm
  • Wednesday, March 21 and 28
  • No April classes.

To register for any of these classes you may call the Senior Center at 206-365-1536 or come to the center at 18560 1st AVE NE #1 on the Shoreline Center Campus. Our volunteer Front Desk Receptionists will be happy to help you.

Lady Dolphins drop final game of the year to Bellevue, 69 to 40

Jenny Voss scored her season average
The Lady Dolphins had another bad first half on Wednesday, only scoring 16 points and never getting back in the game, as BC led 30-16 at half and outscored SCC 39 to 24 in the second half to post the 69-40 win.

Shoreline was led by Jenny Voss with 11 points, the only Dolphin in double figures. Gnanamani Hooyman scored 8 points and Kaleigh Phillips pulled down 7 rebounds.

Shoreline finished the year 10-15, winning 3 more games this season than in 2010-11 and going 4-12 in the NWAACC Northern Region, improving by one game from last year. 2 of the Lady Dolphin losses in the region were in overtime.

SCC was led on the season by sophomore Jenny Voss who averaged 11 points a game and by fellow sophomore Gnanamani Hooyman who added almost 10 points a game and freshman Kaleigh Phillips who averaged 9.5 points.

SCC got off to their best starts in several years, at 6-3 as they entered region play, but a tough 7 game losing streak in the middle of the region schedule doomed a winning campaign.

Police arrest suspect in two Aurora store robberies

Surveillance photos from store robbery
On Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 6:45pm, a man entered the Walgreens at N 175th and Aurora wearing bright blue ski gloves. He pulled out a note from his pocket and handed it to the Walgreen’s employee, telling her that he had a gun.

Two days later, on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 3:20pm, a man wearing bright blue gloves entered Supercuts on Westminster Way N and robbed the store. As in the previous event, the robber handed a note to the victim. This time however, the robber pulled a gun from his sweatshirt pocket and displayed it to the victim.

Three days after that, on February 24 at 8:45pm, Master Police Officer Rich Torres observed a man walking down Aurora behaving suspiciously. Torres contacted the man, who produced blue gloves from his pocket. Torres transported the suspect to the Shoreline precinct for further investigation.

Major Crimes Detective Christina Bartlett questioned the suspect, who eventually confessed to both Shoreline robberies.

The suspect claimed that the robberies were a spur of the moment decision to support his heroin habit.

CleanScapes to award $10,000 prize to neighborhood producing the least waste

Correction: Wednesday is in last place! Updated 2-24-2012 4:57pm

On April 21st at Shoreline’s Earth Day Every Day event, CleanScapes will announce the winning neighborhoods for this year’s $10,000 community project. The winning collection day area will have reduced their waste more than the other collection areas.

Thursday is leading the way. Wednesday is last.
Chart courtesy CleanScapes

The Thursday collection area is leading this year’s competition, while all other collection areas have actually shown increases in waste (though the margins are slim!). The Thursday area includes all of Richmond Beach and Innis Arden, as well as parts of Hillwood, Richmond Highlands, and Highland Terrace (online map here).

Last year, the Friday collection area won the competition, and since then, CleanScapes and the City of Shoreline have been working with a committee of community members on the selection, design, and installation of two projects chosen by the committee:

  1. Quarter-mile markers along the Interurban Trail, designed by local artists and installed by the Shoreline Parks Department.
  2. An amenity (TBD) at the recently approved community garden at Twin Ponds Park, currently in design phase.

Aldan Shank of CleanScapes says, "Both of these are exciting projects and we are looking forward to seeing what this year’s winning neighborhood chooses for its own $10,000 community improvement project(s)."
CleanScapes staff will speak with neighborhood associations or PTAs about the Neighborhood Rewards Program. Contact Aldan Shank, Waste Diversion Project Manager, to schedule a speaker.

Notes from Shoreline City Council meeting Tuesday February 21

By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

Human Services will continue to be funded
Rob Beem, Community Services Division Manager for Shoreline, reported that this year the city budget allocated $480,000 to local human services agencies to include support for basic needs and poverty, people with disabilities, and older people in the community. Beem said that some of the money comes from Community Development Block Grants which are being reduced each year. Despite this reduction the funding will remain the same for the next two years with the general fund making up the shortfall so the city can continue focus on the core services including funding for the senior center, The Center for Human Services and Hopelink.

New members recommended for Planning Commission
Council member Winstead said that she along with council members McConnell and Eggen were on the subcommittee to appoint volunteer citizens to the Planning Commission. Seventeen applicants were considered and four were recommended: Easton Craft, David Maul, William Montero, and Keith Scully. City attorney Ian Sievers assured a member of the public that the open meeting rules had been followed in choosing the planning commission members.

Friends of Fircrest
A family representative from Friends of Fircrest discussed the need for the vital services provided to the developmentally disabled residents despite “constant threat of more service cuts”. Cheryl Felak said her son has not been hospitalized in the last three years he has lived under care at Fircrest. He has been trained for work taking batteries out of remote controls for companies like Comcast. She said the residents are not isolated from the community and that Fircrest has space to include more activities for residents and the community. She said DSHS has not encouraged expansion.

Shoreline neighborhood associations
Nora Smith Neighborhoods Program Coordinator joined Rob Beem and two neighborhood representatives in updating the program. Of the fourteen neighborhoods designated in Shoreline several are very active with their own associations and annual activities which strengthen the Shoreline community. The city budgets support for neighborhoods in assisting with events such as Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival, the Briarcrest Anniversary Party and Ridgecrest Ice Cream Social. Mini-grants helped fund a pathway connecting Ashworth and Densmore in the Echo Lake Neighborhood, creating a community gathering space out of an overgrown right-of-way.

King County Assessor: Earlier notice of overdue payments

Earlier notice of overdue payments will help property taxpayers avoid extra charges
Delinquency notices will now be mailed in June instead of September

King County will move up the annual mailing of property tax delinquency notices from September to June, under a policy change made by County Executive Dow after hearing from taxpayers and County Councilmember Bob Ferguson.

“By sending notices earlier, we can help taxpayers avoid unnecessary late fees and provide better customer service,” said Executive Constantine.
“I reached out to Executive Constantine to see how we could improve our notification system and save taxpayers money after hearing concerns from a constituent,” said Councilmember Ferguson, chair of the Council’s Government Accountability, Oversight, and Financial Performance Committee. “This simple change will save taxpayers from accruing unnecessary late charges and sets a new standard of customer service for King County.”

To avoid penalties, the first half of property taxes is due by April 30.

While there is no requirement to send a delinquency notice, for many years the County has sent a single courtesy notice in late September to about 9,000 taxpayers who missed the April deadline and whose taxes remained unpaid as of September 1. The September notice was timed to be close to the October 31 due date for the second half of property taxes owed and to help taxpayers avoid the eight percent penalty imposed in December.

The new June notice will go out to approximately 14,500 taxpayers. The County anticipates that about half of those taxpayers will pay before July 1 and avoid the additional monthly interest charges and December penalty that are mandated by state law.

King County is also developing a system for taxpayers to sign up for email alerts to notify them when tax payments are due. This tool, expected to be available as early as 2013, should further enhance customer service and reduce the number of delinquent property tax payments.
