Gardening with Jennifer 2012 NW Flower & Garden Show: A Floral Symphony

Thursday, February 9, 2012

By Jennifer Rotermund

Whether you prefer the graceful pace of classical music or if modern rock is the way you roll, this year’s Northwest Flower and Garden Show’s “Floral Symphony” theme has something for you.

Although the show gardens seem to cover all possible settings, urban to rural, ornamental to edible, international to native northwest, big budget glamorous to cost-effective sustainable, they’ve all turned up the volume on that singularly intoxicating hallmark experience we northwest gardeners appreciate at our February Flower and Garden Show -- Spring flowers!

As you take them all in, you may find your pace to be more andante than allegro. Of course, if your cravings lean more toward the hands-on portion of the multi-sensory orchestral experience that is this year’s show, don’t forget that there are booths and classrooms in all directions selling more garden tools, books, accessories or art and teaching more classes on every aspect of gardening than you can image ever existed. Not to be outdone, this year’s Northwest Flower and Garden Show is a true lollapalooza performance.

Show hours are Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 8 -11), 9am to 8pm; Sunday (Feb. 12), 9am to 6pm.
More information on the display gardens, seminar offerings, exhibitors and attractions for the entire family. Founded in 1989, the Northwest Flower and Garden Show is produced by Northwest-based, family owned O'Loughlin Trade Shows.

Shorecrest takes a 17-4 season record into the game at Mountlake Terrace (20-1), a team that defeated Everett, 54-34 in a first-round tournament game at Mountlake Terrace Wednesday.

Mountlake Terrace entered the tournament as the Western Conference 3A division champion. Shorecrest tied for second with Shorewood, but Shorewood got the No. 2 Wesco berth in the tournament by scoring a victory over first-place Mountlake Terrace.

Shorecrest’s Wednesday victory came over a Ferndale team that qualified for the tournament by winning its final regular-season game. Before Ferndale defeated 2A Mount Baker in the final Northwest Conference game Monday, Ferndale had been tied with Sedro-Woolley for the second of the NWC’s two District 3A tournament berths.

The winner of Shorecrest’s game with Mountlake Terrace plays Feb. 17 against the winner of the Friday game between Glacier Peak and Oak Harbor for the District championship and the No. 1 berth in the State 3A tournament.

Shoreline School Board Meeting Monday February 6, 2012

Notes from Shoreline School Board meeting February 6, 2012

By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

National Board Certifications
Shoreline School Board members recognized ten teachers from the district who have just received their National Board Certification. This brings the total to 66 teachers in the district which is above the national and Washington State averages. Board Candidate Support Facilitator Marcia Garrett said that the process took at least 18 months to complete during which the candidates must demonstrate a deep understanding of national standards for their specified field. The teachers honored were: Jennifer Altena of Syre, Andrew Bagley of Shorewood, Christi Camp of Einstein, Mikael Christensen of Shorewood, Alisan Tucker-Giesy of Shorewood, Roberta Ruark of Shorecrest, Brynne Saskor of Shorecrest, Marybeth Scherf of Lake Forest Park, Sheryl Zahajko of Lake Forest Park and Clark Youmans of Shorewood.

Math Intervention
The IXL Math intervention program is an online program used by teachers in the district to give students individualized practice and reinforcement of concepts learned in class. It is not diagnostic or tutorial. Linda Smith, Instructional Specialist for Elementary Math gave a demonstration of the program. She said the next step is to evaluate its effectiveness using data comparing a student’s usage with her growth in test scores.

Budget shortfall for Fircrest
A “potentially significant” funding shortfall is looming for teaching students at the Fircrest Residential Habilitation Center (RHC). The program provides instruction through Shoreline School District to the medically, mentally and behaviorally challenged students who come from all over the state to live there. For the past three years the program has been running $500,000 short. Local levies cannot be used for this population and DSHS moneys will fall $l00,000 short this year. Twenty-five students ranging in age from twelve to twenty-one are taught either in Shoreline schools or in classrooms at Fircrest a staff member told board members. This number is expected to increase since Fircrest is the only facility of its kind in the state.

Day on the Hill
Board member David Wilson said he and Superintendent Walker attended the annual Day on the Hill in Olympia where they met with delegates from school boards and school administrators from across the state. They also met with state legislators where they emphasized “no more cuts to K-12” supported by the McCleary Decision which stated that “the state of Washington is violating its constitutional paramount duty to amply fund the education of all K-12 students”. Also they voiced making school construction assistance a priority and finding a long term solution to teaching students at Fircrest Residential Habilitation Center.

Josh Hawkinson and Semir Kadiric combined for 28 points as Shorewood knocked off third-ranked Mountlake Terrace, the state's only remaining undefeated Class 4A or 3A boys’ basketball team, 55-54, Saturday night.

The defeat ruined what had been a perfect season for Terrace (19-1 overall, 15-1).

Hawkinson, a 6-foot-9 center, hurt the Hawks inside with 15 points, seven blocks, six rebounds and three steals. Kadiric, a 6-6 forward, added 13 points, three rebounds and two steals for Shorewood (16-4, 13-3).

Shorecrest (16-4, 13-3) will play host Wednesday to the No. 2 Northwest Conference 3A team, either Ferndale (14-6, 6-6 NWC 3A-2A-1A) or Sedro-Woolley (9-10, 6-6), as each team had a final NWC game Monday.

Ronald Wastewater District officials to speak at national conference

Board President Brian T. Carroll and General Manager Michael U. Derrick will be speaking at the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Specialty Conference in St. Louis on June 5, 2012.

RWD was successful in obtaining a favorable Washington State Attorney General's Opinion that permits the use of public money to replace private side sewers in conjunction with a public works project when a public benefit will result. Replacing side sewers reduces inflow and infiltration (I and I) of fresh water into the sanitary sewage collection system and treatment plant. The District has found a unique solution to a national problem. The opinion was obtained with the help of State Representative Ruth Kagi.

One public benefit of replacing side sewers, thereby reducing I and I in the sewage collection system and treatment plants, is fewer sanitary sewer overflows (SSO). Another benefit is the conveyance capacity of the sewer mains and treatment plants is retained or increased without the need to build more pipeline or plants, which is good for development and economic growth.

Communicating to the homeowner the value of having their private side sewer replaced will be the focus of their presentation. RWD is a special purpose government that focuses on providing excellent water/wastewater utility services and is taking the lead in environmental stewardship.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) recently mailed a flyer to residents and businesses in Shoreline titled "A Side Sewer Saga" regarding side sewers and ratepayer responsibility.

SPU distributed this flyer in Shoreline in error, according to the Ronald Wastewater Review. The flyer gave the impression that ratepayers in Shoreline receive their sewer service for SPU and that side sewers are the ratepayers's responsibility from the building to the sewer mainline in the middle of the street. This is incorrect.
Ronald Wastewater District provides sewer service to all homes and businesses in Shoreline (except for The Highlands) and in our District the ratepayer's side sewer responsibility is from the home or business to the District's 6" stub (usually closer to the property line)

If you have any sewer questions, contact the District office at 206-546-3494.

“As Chair of the Government Accountability, Oversight, and Financial Performance Committee, I will focus on enhancing trust in government through greater transparency, improved responsiveness, and financial responsibility,” said Ferguson.

The Government Accountability, Oversight, and Financial Performance Committee is the new name for a revamped committee that will take on expanded responsibilities in 2012. Responsible for overseeing efficiency, cost effectiveness, and performance improvement in all branches of county government, the committee is also charged with making policy recommendations that enhance accountability and transparency. Civilian oversight of the Sheriff’s Office, the development of a pre-trial risk assessment tool, public records reform, and improving services to veterans are among the committee’s expanded functions.

“The committee’s goal this year will be to ask ‘how can we do better?’” said Ferguson. “We will look at a range of policy issues that address how King County government can continue to become smarter, more efficient, and provide better service to the people of King County.”

Laugh your winter blues away with The Second City at Edmonds Center for the Arts

Second City Cast will appear at the
Edmonds Center for the Art
s

Laugh Out Loud and chase away your winter doldrums as Edmonds Center for the Arts welcomes The Second City for a return engagement, Saturday February 18, 2012 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available on-line or by phone at 425-275-9595; ticket prices $35-$40, $15 youth. Additional service charges apply.

Celebrating “52 years of funny”, The Second City began in Chicago in 1959, launched by a group of creative and intellectual University of Chicago students in an environment that was ripe for social and political satire. Their popularity quickly spread and world comedy domination began with their first Broadway appearance in 1961 and their first London appearance in 1962. The Second City firmly established its comedy reputation with the debut of Saturday Night Live in 1974, featuring Second City alumni John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.

From the company that launched the careers of John Candy, Martin Short, Jane Lynch, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and many more, comes the next generation of comedy’s best and brightest in an evening of hilarious sketch comedy and Second City’s trademark improvisation.

Whether ripped from the morning headlines or a classic gem from their 52-year archives, The Second City is always a laugh-out-loud hit. With theatres and Training Centers in Chicago and Toronto, a Training Center in Hollywood, 11 full time touring ensembles, corporate and theatrical divisions as well as television and film operations, The Second City has been called "a Comedy Empire" by the New York Times. This year’s production at ECA will feature four fresh new faces and one returning veteran. The name might be the same but the show is always different!

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA), is a non-profit performing arts facility located in picturesque downtown Edmonds, Washington. Located in the historic original Edmonds High School building, ECA was remodeled and opened in October 2006 to be a cultural resource for the Puget Sound region through performing arts presentations, community partnerships and education outreach programs.

Make your home energy efficient with no-interest financing

Residents of Shoreline, Lynnwood and Edmonds can now access no-interest financing to make their home more energy efficient or add solar.

This is a great opportunity for homeowners to lower their energy bills this winter without having to worry about paying interest. The purpose of the SustainableWorks program is to help homeowners make home improvements that reduce their energy use and energy bills.

In additional to receiving a low cost home energy audit, participants can save on items like furnaces, air sealing, insulation, hot water heaters, and solar that reduce their energy costs. To learn more about the program, or to sign-up, visit the webpage or call 206-575-2252.

The process begins with a pre-audit to determine eligibility followed by a professional energy audit. Worth approximately $400, the cost of the audit to the homeowner is $95. An energy consultant then explains to the homeowner where they are losing energy and suggests the most cost effective energy saving improvements. Homeowners can also work with SustainableWorks to add solar to their home.

SustainableWorks then completes the energy saving measures chosen by the homeowner. SustainableWorks offers bulk bundling prices and utility incentives to lower the project cost. Zero to low-interest financing is also available to help homeowners afford their projects. All loans are subject to approval and based on credit score.

About SustainableWorks
SustainableWorks is a non-profit focused on creating quality jobs and improving the environment with residential energy retrofit projects facilitated through community engagement and participation. SustainableWorks has utilized a $4 million Community Energy Efficiency Program Grant to retrofit over 400 homes and small businesses in moderate- income neighborhoods in Spokane, Pierce, King, and Snohomish counties over the last 2 years.
