Shoreline is in the 32nd Legislative District

Due to confusion about maps provided for the new legislative districts, some groups are being told that a sliver of Shoreline ended up in the 46th Legislative District.

No so, according to Genevieve O'Sullivan, Communications Director of the Washington State Redistricting Committee.

Shoreline is fully within the 32nd Legislative District. Lake Forest Park and Kenmore are fully within the new 46th Legislative District. This is the first time in decades that Lake Forest Park and Shoreline have been separated.

New legislative districts for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park
Map created by Washington State Redistricting Committee

The new districts, which were finalized by the state legislature last week, will take effect with the November elections.

According to the Redistricting Committee:
For now, legislators and congressional members will continue to represent their current districts (as adopted in 2002). Following this year’s General Election (November 6th) current legislators will immediately begin to represent their new districts. Newly elected legislators will begin representing their districts on the first day of the 2013 session.

Representatives are elected every two years.
Holdover senators (those up in 2014) will also continue to represent their current districts for now and begin to represent their new districts following the 2012 General Election.

Political organizations, however, are starting to meet with their new members.

Shoreline City Council notes from February 6, 2012 meeting

Shoreline City Council Meeting on Monday February 6, 2012

By Devon Vose Rickabaugh

The city council voted 6-0 to urge the state legislature to pass Senate Bill 6239 to end the prohibition on same sex marriage. Council member Chris Roberts said “It’s only fair for everyone to have the same opportunity for happiness that I’ve had in my marriage. Marriage equality for everyone is a fundamental right.” Mayor McGlashan said that more same sex couples are moving to outlying areas including Shoreline and that the city needs to welcome them.

Mayor McGlashan proclaimed February 2012 Black History Month. He told three students from Shorewood High School how much he appreciated all they had done to commemorate black history.

Michael Derrick general manager for Ronald Wastewater told the council the sewer district has completed around $3, 000,000 in sewer upgrades in Echo Lake and other areas in the city to comply with the city’s comprehensive plan. When the economy turns around and “When people are ready to start building we will have plenty of sewer capacity,” he said.

Dan Eernissee the Economic Development Program Manager talked about challenges for long term economic development in Shoreline and what can be done about it. He mentioned no population growth in the past ten years, but said the city had approved property tax exemption programs to attract residential development and working toward faster permitting to help business development. Mayor McGlashan said that people had said high property taxes as a reason not to move to Shoreline, but that the quality of life here is supported by these taxes and is a reason to move here. Council member Salomon suggested direct marketing to young families. Council member Roberts asked “What can cities do to really effect economic development?” Dan Eemissee said he thinks the city is doing the right things and eventually it will pay off.

City manager Julie Underwood announced that a discussion of the community garden at the South East corner of Twin Ponds Park would be held on Thursday February 9th at Trinity Presbyterian Church. She said the employee art show is up in the city hall gallery featuring Lauren Greathouse and Betty Udesen . An open house and reception will be held February 9 at 5 pm. Also the employee survey has been completed for this year. The survey asks employees to judge the communication in city departments and the culture of the organization among other items. Results will be announced at the all city staff meeting to be held this week. Underwood encouraged city residents to take the survey about tobacco free parks in the city. (see article).

Work party at Grace Cole Nature Park Saturday, Feb 11

Join the Stewardship Foundation for a Grace Cole Nature Park Work Party on Saturday, February 11th, from 9am - noon.

The days are getting noticeably longer. A few sunny days now, and buds are popping out.

If it will be dry enough to get up the hill, volunteers will plant some more sword fern on the bank which was cleared of ivy last Summer and Fall. Small orange flags will mark the trail from the road, up the hill to the planting area. Look for the flagged trail a few yards north of the boardwalk.

Other tasks needing attention are pulling and digging blackberry vines and working on removing more ivy. The roots of blackberries come out easily when the ground is wet, if they are not too extensive. Some require digging, as we want to get all the root to prevent re-growth.

Location: Grace Cole Nature Park, 30th Ave NE and NE 165th Street. Go south on 28th from NE 178th in Lake Forest Park and drive about 1/2 mile until just before the road turns. You'll see Grace Cole Nature Park on your right.

For more information, please contact Mamie Bolender or 206-364-4410.

Lake Forest Park seeks applicants for the Environmental/Legacy Grant Program

Lake Forest Park Environmental Quality Commission (EQC) and Community Service Commission (CSC) encourage residents to apply for funding under the Commissions’ jointly-sponsored Environmental/Legacy Grant Program.

Lake Forest Park provides grants to individual property owners, groups of property owners or community organizations to encourage small-scale environmental improvements.

Grants reimburse a portion of expenses on projects in two categories:

  • Local ecosystem enhancement - restoration projects that return wetlands, streams, and lakeshore areas to more natural conditions. Ecosystem enhancement projects can be undertaken by individuals or groups.
  • Legacy Vision implementation - projects that contribute to the 100-Year Legacy Vision: healthy connections, natural drainage, healthy habitat, and people places. Legacy Vision projects must be group projects.

The program provides 50% reimbursement, up to $500, for projects carried out by individual property owners, and 50% reimbursement, up to $1500, for projects carried out by groups of property owners or community organizations. Some examples of projects eligible for funding include:

  • Creating a community garden
  • Creating a rain garden
  • Creating native buffers between lawns and wetlands, streams, or Lake Washington
  • Replacing lawns or non-native vegetation with native species
  • Other projects that meet Legacy guidelines.

Any Lake Forest Park landowner or community group is eligible to apply. Applications and more detailed information may be obtained from Aaron Halverson, Environmental Programs Manager, at City Hall. Applications are reviewed by members of the two Commissions, and selected projects are sent to the Mayor for funding. Reviews are conducted on a monthly basis; there is no deadline for applications.

What do you think about making parks smoke-free?

In September 2011, the City Council adopted a Healthy City Strategy Work Plan for Shoreline titled Shoreline4Health.

One strategy goal of this plan is to establish a tobacco-free zone in all of Shoreline’s parks and public sites.

To hear from the community about this goal, the City is seeking input regarding prohibiting smoking and tobacco use in Shoreline parks. Shoreline residents are invited to share their thoughts by filling out the Tobacco-Free Parks Survey.

For more information about Shoreline4Health or tobacco-free parks contact Management Analyst John Norris at 206-801-2216.

A call to the community: Shorecrest High School bagpipers need help

Student with Kevin Auld
at Shorecrest 50th Anniversary
From Shorecrest HS Bagpipe Instructor and Alumnus '91 Kevin Auld

Dear Shorecrest supporters,

The Shorecrest High School marching band and pipers will be taking their award-winning Scottish pageantry to Ireland this March to perform in one of the biggest parades in the world - the St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin. This is the trip of a lifetime for our young band members and it will no doubt be a fabulous experience.

HOWEVER... The school-owned bagpipes are NOT in good shape and are in need of urgent repair. I was hoping we could get through this trip with the pipes as they are, but it's become very clear that they need to be repaired before we leave. In addition, the pipes that our newest band members are attempting to learn on are in very bad condition.

So I am making this sincere call to our community for support. Unfortunately we don't have much time. The band leaves for Ireland on March 14th and we are quickly running out of time to raise the money needed to refurbish these instruments.

I am asking our friends, families and SC alumni to help us get these pipes ready for Dublin.

Bagpipe parts needed: (estimated retail price)
  • Pipe Bags - $215 x 10 2150
  • Pipe Bag Covers - $70 x 10 700
  • Drone Cords - $24 x 10 240
  • Misc. Maintenance Supplies - $30

Total: $3120

Checks can be made out to Shorecrest High School, with "Pipers" in the memo line. Donations can be mailed or left in-person at the Shorecrest main office, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155, 206-361-4286.

Sincere thanks to everyone who wishes to contribute.

From our news partner, the Seattle Times

Josh Hawkinson and Semir Kadiric combined for 28 points as Shorewood knocked off third-ranked Mountlake Terrace, the state's only remaining undefeated Class 4A or 3A boys’ basketball team, 55-54, Saturday night.

The defeat ruined what had been a perfect season for Terrace (19-1 overall, 15-1).

Hawkinson, a 6-foot-9 center, hurt the Hawks inside with 15 points, seven blocks, six rebounds and three steals. Kadiric, a 6-6 forward, added 13 points, three rebounds and two steals for Shorewood (16-4, 13-3).

Terrace advances to next week's district tournament as the No. 1 seed. Shorewood finished tied with Shorecrest for second in Wesco 3A, but took the No. 2 district-tournament seed on a tiebreaker.

The Thunderbirds got Wesco's No. 2 tournament berth despite having the same record as Shorecrest and splitting head-to-head meetings because the Thunderbirds had a victory over the No. 1 team.

Shorewood opens Northwest District 3A tournament play at home Wednesday against Wesco No. 5 Oak Harbor (7-13, 7-9 Wesco 3A).

The top three Western Conference 3A teams – Mountlake Terrace, Shorewood and Shorecrest -- and the No. 1 Northwest Conference 3A team – Mount Vernon -- play their first-round games at home, with the Nos. 4-6 Wesco teams and the No. 2 Northwest Conference 3A team playing on the road.

Shorecrest (16-4, 15-3) will play host Wednesday to the No. 2 Northwest Conference 3A team, either Ferndale or Sedro-Woolley.

In Shorewood’s 55-54 victory over Mountlake Terrace, Shorewood trailed 15-14 after the first quarter and 34-32 at halftime but took a 45-44 third-quarter lead and held the lead through the final period. Hawkinson led Shorewood with 15 points followed by Kadiric with 13, Gage Carroll with 10 and Ben Andrews with 8.
