Quick-Start Shoreline Business Workshop, Tuesday February 7

Monday, February 6, 2012

February is designated as Marketing Month at QuickStart Shoreline.

To assist community businesses in growing their sales, all of February’s Quick-Start Shoreline Business Lunch and Learn Workshops will focus on marketing for today’s economy.

The Tuesday Lunch and Learn for start-up business owners, February 7, 12 noon to 1:30 pm at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Avenue N, is presented by Shoreline Community College Small business Accelerator and the City of Shoreline. The sessions are free; bring a brown bag lunch.

A series of four workshops titled “Removing the Marketing Roadblocks” and presented by Master Marketer, Daniel Singley, is scheduled for each Tuesday in February from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at the Shoreline City Hall. The program is free and will provide CEO’s, Business Owners and Managers a proven strategy for making better marketing decisions in an ever-changing marketplace.

Daniel Singley
The program is based on the Action Marketing Technology™ developed by Singley. Each week a key marketing component will be presented with coaching on proper implementation. “This is a hands-on program for developing effective go-to-market strategies that get the customer to respond,” Singley says.

In 2011 overall marketing effectiveness dropped, Singley reports. “It’s a trend that will continue for companies that rely on traditional approaches,” Singley says. “Companies rethinking the process are reversing these trends and seeing new opportunities emerge.”

The Quick-Start Shoreline Business Lunch and Learn Workshop is presented in partnership with the Shoreline Community College Business Accelerator program and open to everyone and Singley recommends the program to anyone promoting a message in today’s marketplace.

“Removing the Marketing Roadblocks”’ will be presented on February 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 12-noon to 1:30 pm at the Shoreline City Hall. 17500 Midvale Ave N. Shoreline WA 98133. Admission is free and you may bring a brown-bag lunch or snack.

Bo Kimble and Shoreline Community College men’s basketball on USA Today website

Shoreline Community College Men's Assistant Basketball Coach, Bo Kimble, and the SCC Men's Basketball Team are on the USA Today website in a full-length story.

But to Kimble and (basketball coach Greg) Turcott, this style is beauty on the court when played at a high, refined level. They've tired of conventional philosophy that games need to be won with suffocating defense and methodical offense. They want speed. They want shots, at least 100 per game. They don't care about turnovers or traps, just get out and run.

Locks of Love to Dublin Dollars

2nd from left, Mary Grassley, Chair of Dublin Dollars
Stylist Amy Smith
Kendahl Adjololo

Kendahl Adjorlolo has donated hair to Locks of Love three times. "I look upon my hair as a crop," she commented. So it was natural that she thought of a way to combine her passion for Locks of Love with her passion for helping band kids from Shorecrest get to Ireland for the St. Patrick's Day parades.

Locks of Love is an organization that takes donated hair, which must be at least ten inches long, and weaves it into wigs for disadvantaged, young patients who have lost their hair for any medical reason.

Dublin Dollars is the volunteer group raising funds to help families pay for the trip to Ireland in March for the Shorecrest Band and Choir.

Kendahl and Dublin Dollars chair Mary Grassley recruited a dozen women with long hair. Each of them found people to sponsor them. Donations from the sponsors went to Dublin Dollars. The hair went to Locks of Love.

On January 27, hair donors gathered at the James Alan Salon and Spa, at 192nd and Aurora. James Alan, owned by Matthew Fairfax, donated the hair cuts.

Heather Pence Sevier went on the band trip when she was at Shorecrest. Now married and living in Cheney, Washington, she had her hair cut and sent it to the committee, along with her donations.

Mary explained that Dublin Dollars has raised $40,000 to date, in three funds. Fund A includes the hair cuts and direct sales, such as the See's Candy event. 90% of the profit goes to the individual student.

Fund B is from work events, like the car washes. Students have to work for money and get a percentage of money from the event, based on the number of hours they worked.

Fund C is the general fund, from direct donations. The money raised is distributed equally among all the students who worked at least twelve hours in the fund raisers.

The trip costs $3,500 per student and 137 are going. The families have to make up the balance.

The school participates in the Irish events every four years, so every band/choir student gets one opportunity to go.

"Some of the kids have been raising money for over a year," said Kendahl. "They mow lawns in the summer, babysit, and do odd jobs. One girl bought a set of paints and went to every fair she could find all summer. She put out a donation jar and did face painting. She raised the entire amount in one summer."

No one can remember when Shorecrest started going to Ireland. A lot of people guessed 1998, but others asserted that the trips started in the 1970s.

Donating hair is a mother-daughter event at Dublin Dollars Locks of Love

Two sets of mother-daugthers participated in the Locks of Love for Dublin Dollars event at the James Alan Salon and Spa on Friday, January 26, 2012.

Michelle Landis and daughter Sydney Landis volunteered immediately. Michelle said that her hair was already shoulder-length in September, when the event was announced. "My hair grows really fast."

Yea! Hair gone!
Sydney Landis is very pleased.

Sydney, who plays flute in the band, was just tired of having long hair. "I just wanted it gone," she said.

Michelle and Sydney were donating their hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for young medical patients.

They got sponsors to donate to them and that money went to the Dublin Dollars, which raises money to help Shorecrest Band and Choir students go to Ireland for St. Patrick's Day parades and events.

Sydney got donations from friends, family, church members, and her parents. (Donate on this page.)

The James Alan Salon donated the cuts and provided the salon space for the event.

Judy Robertson has a friend in the band. She was getting tired of her long hair and was ready for a change.

Coincidentally, her step-daughter Melaina Robertson, a student at Edmonds-Woodway High School in Edmonds, was doing a job shadow at James Alan.

Stylist Mandy Hampton explained what she was doing as she cut Judy's hair.

"It's perfect," they all said. Judy got a style cut, Melaina got job shadow hours, Locks of Love got the hair, and Dublin Dollars got the sponsor money.

Parkwood Elementary and Shorewood High School receive Washington Achievement awards

Parkwood Elementary and Shorewood High School have been named as recipients of Washington Achievement Awards for 2011. The awards will be presented April 25 in a ceremony at Mariner High School in Everett.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education created the Washington Achievement Award to celebrate top-performing schools and to recognize achievement in multiple categories. This highly selective award is based on a school's performance according to the Washington Achievement Index, a comprehensive measurement of how schools in Washington are performing over time.

The Washington Achievement Award is given to elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools in seven different categories: overall excellence, language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate (high and comprehensive schools only), improvement and closing achievement gaps.

Parkwood is among those schools honored for Overall Excellence. The overall excellence award is for schools whose overall two-year average put them in the top five percent. Parkwood will also receive a Washington Achievement Award for Closing Achievement Gaps. This is the second consecutive year Parkwood has received these two awards.

Parkwood has shown significant improvement in student achievement on state assessments during the past two years, particularly among students from low-income families and those with limited English proficiency. The school received the State Title I Academic Achievement Award in 2011 and the State Title I Improvement Award in 2007, 2010 and 2011. Laura Ploudre has been principal at Parkwood since 2001.

Shorewood will receive a Washington Achievement Award for Extended Graduation Rate. The award is for high performing schools and based on a two-year average. Shorewood reported a 93 percent extended graduation rate for the class of 2010. Bill Dunbar has been principal at Shorewood since 2007. The Shorewood assistant principals are Elaine Swanson and Ann Torres.

"Shorewood High School teachers, counselors and support staff deserve all the credit for their extensive efforts in helping our most challenged students," Dunbar said. "While we've maintained high standards and expectations for graduation, we've increased personal attention and intervention for struggling students with after school tutoring and follow-up on students with state testing and credit recovery."

The awards are part of the State Board's accountability program, adopted in 2009. Under the program, all schools are indexed according to outcomes and indicators in 2009 and 2010. The outcomes include student performance in statewide reading, writing, math and science tests.

Senior Center Thrift Shop find makes a happy child - half a world away

One never knows just how far-reaching an act of kindness can go.

Several months ago, a participant at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center received a special request from some friends. They are missionaries in Kosvo and they have a daughter who just turned seven years old. Little Nikol wanted a princess costume.

As it turned out, the perfect costume was found at the senior center Thrift Shop. The costume and other treats were bundled up and sent off in hopes of getting to the country before the holidays. Of course, that didn't happen, but this special package did arrive just in time for this little girl's seventh birthday! The grateful parents sent a photo of a very happy birthday girl ... and that was sent via e-mail, so got here a lot quicker than their package!

Kosvo girl as princess

You could find a treasure at the Senior Center Thrift Shop, too! Shop hours are 9:30AM to 3:30PM, Monday through Friday. Thrift Shop Volunteer Manager, Judith Enich, is looking for volunteers at this time, as well as customers. Infopinion: Everyone has an opinion - Marriage Equality Act on track for passage in Washington state

By Diane Hettrick, Editor

The Marriage Equality Act, which extends the right of full and legal marriage to same-sex couples in Washington state passed the Senate on Wednesday evening. Having already passed in the House, it is expected to be passed by the full legislature sometime in the next week. Same sex marriage will be legal in Washington state.

Courtesy of TVW, I watched the live proceedings as the Senate committee on Government Operations, Tribal Relations and Elections listened to public testimony from anyone who signed up. Our Senator, Maralyn Chase, serves on this committee.

It was pretty fascinating. Religious leaders of several varieties were there. A rabbi, who said he had the largest Reform congregation in the state and was head of the Washington state Reform rabbis organization, said that Jews are in full support and see it as a matter of dignity and fairness. A Christian minister pointed out that religious organizations are not obliged to perform ceremonies just because a civil union is recognized by the state, so there's no reason for the state to hold back on religious grounds.

A Lutheran minister spoke in favor. Another Christian minister said his church was performing ceremonies for same-sex couples and was offended that the state did not honor those unions.

Representatives from the restaurant, catering, and tourist industry spoke in favor, for business and economic reasons. They envisioned more weddings, anniversaries, receptions, and suggested there would be an increase in tourism as couples came to Washington to marry.

A genial Catholic priest said that the Roman Catholic church was in opposition. A scary woman delivered a staccato speech, using every second of the alloted time to talk about the harm this would do to children and family structure. She turned out to be from out of state.

Finally, there were many stories from people in domestic partnerships, who had been bludgeoned with bureaucracy when one of the couple was hospitalized. The domestic partnerships aren't enough, they said. We were still prevented from being with our partner when they needed us.

And that was just one hour. I understand that a wedding photographer complained he would be forced to take photos of people he didn't approve of (and who would want to pay money to have that black cloud at their wedding?). The Washington state AFL-CIO endorsed, as did Microsoft and Starbucks.

The Metropolitan King County Council passed a resolution in support, as did the Shoreline City Council, unanimously.

Mayor Keith McGlashan travelled to Olympia to watch the proceedings.
