Backyard Birds: Robins

Snow bird. Photo by Wayne Pridemore

Shoreline resident Wayne Pridemore says "Last week this American Robin, along with several of his friends, visited the trees and bushes in our backyard.   The robins in our area are year round residents.   We are less likely to see them this time of year because they spend more time roosting in trees than on our lawns."

Street improvements and property lines on residential streets

There are a lot of street improvements occurring in Shoreline.

Aside from the Aurora Corridor, there are several neighborhood individual projects occurring as well.

One of the latest projects was in the Echo Lake Neighborhood with the installation of sidewalks down Ashworth Ave N between N 185th St and N 192nd Street.

The following information is provided courtesy of Chicago Title on 'Residential Street Widths'

Streets as Constructed vs. Streets as Dedicated:

A common issue in many older neighborhoods is the width of the street as dedicated on the recorded plat, versus the width of the constructed street on the ground.

In many cases, the street as dedicated is wider than the street as constructed. This leads to a portion (sometimes a large portion) of what looks like the front yard and the property of the owner, actually being within the street. In some cases, actual improvements such as the garage, driveway, landscaping and perhaps even the dwelling itself may encroach into the street.

If an inspection is performed by the title company, and such an encroachment is discovered it will be disclosed by the company. However, the buyer may want to take this little anomaly into consideration when considering making an offer on a particular property. The same issue may also exist when properties abut active or abandoned railroad right of ways.

If you should have any question as to where your property lines are, the City of Shoreline has been very helpful in providing this information quickly ... personally, I visited the City Hall offices and loved the Aerial Viewpoint and found it extremely informative.

Portage Bay Big Band packs The Commons

The Commons was packed.
The Commons at Lake Forest Park was packed on Saturday night, as the Portage Bay Big Band filled the house with listeners, diners, and dancers.

Twenty-five to thirty couples filled the floor and danced to every number, occasionally dancing out into the aisles. Many were local people who come regularly to dance at The Commons. Others are band followers, who go from venue to venue with the band.

Looking dapper in their red and black outfits, the Portage Bay Big Band played with a smooth, professional sound all the top hits of the 1940s.

Several hundred people took advantage of the many restaurants at The Commons to go dining and dancing on a Saturday night.

Rep. Ryu online learning bill passes the House

The state House of Representatives today unanimously agreed with state Rep. Cindy Ryu that online learning opportunities would greatly expand college and job opportunities for Washingtonians who are considering careers in cosmetology, barbering and related fields.

“Fields like cosmetology and manicuring are perfect examples of how the Internet could help students get through college coursework and into jobs more quickly,” said Ryu (D-Shoreline). “It could help students with work and family commitments to earn degrees more quickly, reduce travel time and costs, and greatly expand opportunities for people living in rural areas.”

Ryu’s House Bill 2242 directs the department of licensing to develop rules for incorporating online learning in cosmetology, manicuring, barbering, esthetics, and instructor-training. However, it imposes no mandates on colleges and would not affect rigorous state requirements for hands-on training.

According to Jerry Ahern, Vice President of Education for Gene Juarez Salons and Spas, giving students the flexibility to do coursework during weekends and other times when classes are not scheduled would allow them to complete their training in nine or 10 months instead of the current 12 to 14 months.

The bill now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

Shoreline City Hall Gallery presents WITNESS Employee Art Show

Shoreline City Hall Gallery presents "Witness"
Photography by: Lauren Greathouse and Betty Udesen
and The City of Shoreline Employees Art Show
February 2 – April 27, 2012
Open House - Meet the Artists Thursday, Feb 9th
5pm – 6:30pm
Shoreline City Hall – N 175th St and Midvale Ave N - Open Monday-Friday 9 – 5

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and the City of Shoreline present a new exhibit featuring the photography of Lauren Greathouse and Betty Udesen and a collection of diverse work in the second annual City of Shoreline Employees Art Show.

Lauren Greathouse at City Hall Gallery

Greathouse’s work from the “Hallowed Halls: Abandoned Schools of Louisiana” series is an exploration of the remnants found in vacant educational institutions around that state. “With the use of color and black and white images, I deal with my own memories of grade school by recreating the vibrancy and color I remember with the poignancy of those things and places that remain. These objects and spaces speak of an interaction with society and emit a history of the complex relationship between people, and the places and things that were once a part of their lives.” Lauren’s work can be seen here

Betty Udesen at City Hall Gallery

Udesen’s work from the Teatime Series" features the wild birds in her Seattle front yard. “I began making photographs using the same equipment I’d use for baseball games. And, as with baseball, the wait for that special moment is sometimes very long. I tuck seeds into decorative cups and pitchers. Then, I wait.

The birds that appear in The Teatime Series are considered “common.” I find that remarkable. Marvels of design and engineering, these backyard birds gave me an appreciation for a world I’d long taken for granted—the world right outside my windows.” More information about Betty and her work can be found here.

The Shoreline Employee Art Show includes paintings, photographs, wood carvings and fiber arts by staff in the City Clerks, Finance, Parks, Planning and Public Works Departments. This is a unique opportunity to see the creative side of some of the engineers, techies, planners and managers who serve the city well in their day jobs.

Shoreline City Hall is located at 17500 Midvale Ave. N, Shoreline, WA 98133. For more information please contact the Arts Council, 206-417- 4645.

Ronald Wastewater District pays off debt

The elected Board of Commissioners of Ronald Wastewater District decided at the regular meeting of January 10, 2012 to use available cash to pay off three Public Works Trust Fund (PWTF) loans.

The outstanding balances of the three loans totaled $727,135.84. By paying off the debt, the District saves $81,044.91 in interest that would have been due had the loans gone to maturity. The loans were obtained in 1995, 1998, and 2000 to update the District’s sanitary sewage pump stations.

“The District was paying two percent on the 1995 loan and three percent on the 1998 and 2000 loans,” said Board President, Brian T. Carroll. “With our invested money returning approximately a half percent in the King County Investment Pool, it made financial sense to pay off the higher interest loans and save more of the ratepayers’ money.”

The District has two loans remaining with the PWTF, both costing only a half percent. The balance on these two loans is $1,929,330; one matures in 14 years, the other matures in 18 years.

Ronald Wastewater District, an independent special purpose district, has a Moody’s rating of Aa2.

Brightwater project honored with state engineering achievement awards

King County’s Brightwater project earned two Engineering Excellence Awards for 2012 from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Washington state.

The awards were presented at the Westin Bellevue on January 20, 2012 to honor the best local examples of the engineering profession’s ingenuity, technical achievement, and commitment to economic and social values. Brightwater also took top honors last month with a prestigious international tunneling award presented in Hong Kong.

The Brightwater Treatment Plant project, designed by engineering consultant firm CH2M Hill, received a Gold Award in the Waste and Stormwater Category and was also selected as a finalist for ACEC’s national competition in Washington D.C. in April.

The ACEC specifically noted King County’s and CH2M Hill’s highly collaborative partnership in designing a treatment plant that would protect public health and the environment, meet stringent seismic design codes, produce reclaimed water, improve habitat, and eliminate odors while incorporating sustainable design features and community amenities such as trails and a community center.

The project was also recognized for completing design deliverables on schedule and within the approved budget.

Brightwater’s East Tunnel project received ACEC’s Best-in-State Silver Award. The 2.7-mile tunnel between Bothell and the treatment plant site was designed as a joint venture by MWH/Jacobs Associates. The tunnel is 16 feet, 8 inches in diameter and holds pipes that convey untreated wastewater, treated wastewater and reclaimed water.

The ACEC of Washington is a professional trade association representing consulting engineering, land surveying and affiliated scientific and planning firms statewide.
