A Chorus Line opens Feb. 10 at Seattle Musical Theatre

Before there was Glee, there was A Chorus Line. The heart wrenching and exhilarating portal into the lives of those driven to perform opens February 10, 2012 at Seattle Musical Theatre.

Set in 1975, the book was authored by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante. The lyrics were written by Edward Kleban and the music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. The depth of their talent and skill is evidenced not only by the winning of nine Tony Awards, but a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is extremely rare for musical theatre.

A Chorus Line follows a group of desperate to work actor/dancers through their audition experience for a spot on the synchronized dance chorus of an upcoming Broadway production. Ironically, Director Zach uses the audition to mine each of their very unique personal events that shaped their lives as dancers.

The show is a historical piece as well. Written from the experiences of real dancers on Broadway in 1974, it is filled with pop cultural references of the time. This was a different era, where skeletons were locked securely in closets, and there was no social media to reveal one’s secrets. The social revelations in A Chorus Line were ground breaking in their day. The themes, however, are timeless, as the experiences of the dancers of “the line” leaves the audience with a deeper understanding of overcoming pain and fear in our search to experience what we love.

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE. Parking is free and plentiful. Have dinner in LFP at the Grill or The Commons and easily make the 20 minute drive to SMT. Performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

LFP - warning of continuing problems from rain and wind

LFP Emergency Management has warned that continuing rain and wind gusts may create problems for area residents.

An urban and small stream flood watch is in effect for all of western Washington. Streams in LFP may flood, winds and rain saturated ground increase the risk of falling trees and associated wires, and there is an increased threat of landslides on steep slopes.

Residents are advised to keep storm drains clear of ice, snow, and debris near homes. All citizens are asked to assist by checking and clearing street drains.

Residents should be prepared for power outages.

SAN columnist speaks to packed house at Molbak's seminar

Christine Southwick at Molbak's

Our 'For the Birds' columnist Christine Southwick presented a seminar on Saturday, January 14 at Molbak's Nursery in Woodinville.

53 people braved a windy, rainy day to hear her presentation.

"Many more who weren't brave enough to go out called to ask for notes," said Mary Berg, Molbak's Community and Events Coordinator.

Christine's topic was "Attracting Birds to your BackYard: How to make your garden a sanctuary for both you and our native birds."

She discussed the things that birds need - food, water, shelter, and places to raise their young. She showed many native shrubs, trees, and plants which are attractive to birds. She discussed different kinds of birdfeeders, gave some ideas about how to provide water, and urged gardeners not to manicure their yards.
Nature isn't perfect - your yard shouldn't be either
If it is, you are starving the wildlife.

There is a link to Christine's columns on our main page, in the first column. Click "For the Birds."

LFP Farmers Market has most successful season ever

Lake Forest Park Farmers Market-- Market Bucks Program Report for 2011
By Constance Perenyi, Executive Director
Friends of the Third Place Commons

The most successful season ever
With all the numbers now in after our December indoor market, Friends of Third Place Commons is pleased to report that the 2011 Lake Forest Park Farmers Market was our most successful season ever. Attendance at the market was consistently high with some days drawing over 8,000 shoppers. Despite the economy, our farmers maintained their high levels of sales, and new vendors found Lake Forest Park to be the most supportive market to do business. Our community tents bustled every weekend, providing an opportunity for many nonprofit groups to meet the public.

Growth in food assistance program
Our 2011 season also marked significant growth in our food assistance program. Many more people were able to shop with Market Bucks coupons, made available to them through partner agencies in the northend. Begun as a pilot project with funds from United Way, this innovative program has helped our hungry neighbors feed their families since 2008. This year, over $15,500 worth of Market Bucks were redeemed at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.

Funding from grants allowed increased coupon distribution
Funding from two grants enabled Friends of Third Place Commons to distribute more coupons this year. We are especially grateful to the Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, which donated $7,500 for Market Bucks. United Way provided additional funds. The coupons were distributed throughout the season to: Hopelink Shoreline, Hopelink Northshore, Brookside Elementary, LFP Elementary, Ballinger Homes, Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center (see previous article), Kenmore Emergency Housing Shelter, Popy’s CafĂ©, Kenmore Emergency Housing Shelter, Vineyard Summer Lunch Program, and Ronald Methodist Summer Lunch Program.

Market Bucks is now a national model
Friends of Third Place Commons, the sponsor and administrator of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, developed the Market Bucks program, which is now a model throughout the nation. With an ongoing commitment from Church of the Redeemer for Friends will continue this successful program into the future. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the 2012 Market Bucks program can do so online. Friends of Third Place Commons is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so contributions are deductible.

The Market is a summer institution
The Farmers Market was first established in 2005, and has become a summer institution, opening on Mother’s Day and running through the third week in October. Friends also hosts two indoor markets during the winter holidays.
