Power outages in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Crews working on lines on Sunnyside Dr
and N 180th St.
Seattle City Light reports outages affecting 6,300 customers in NE Shoreline and North Seattle area and one of them was at your Editor's house. When I called in to report it, hoping that it wasn't just my house because the recorded voice always cheerfully threatens to charge you if it's just you, the message said there was one outage of about 100 people in Lake Forest Park. This was about 5pm Wednesday.

Now (11:20pm) they are talking about 6,300 customers and the power won't be back until the early hours. I was told that streetlights were out along SR 104. My power was out for about an hour. My Comcast cable has been cutting in and out ever since but only went out for a few minutes.

Snow overloading tree branches, no doubt.

The outage map only reports 3909 customers without power in Shoreline and LFP.

WeatherWatcher: Wednesday weather conditions

Current conditions at Carl's Shoreline Weather Station:

Temperature: 28.8ºF
Temperature trend: steady
Snow depth: 4-5 inches
Humidity: 100%
Barometer: 29.205 inHg
Barometer trend: steady
Weather: overcast, light snow

6:33AM, Wednesday January 18th, 2012.
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 8pm PST this evening.

-Total snow accumulations of 4-8 inches for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park expected.

-Do not drive unless you have to, be prepared for winter driving conditions.

-I was out on the roads this morning at 10:30am, there is compact snow and ice on all roads, only a very select few roads are slushy from salting and sanding. Watch out for pedestrians and kids playing in the streets!  (and sledding on hills)

New forecasts indicate that snow will simply end later this afternoon.   There will be no change over to rain.   Temperatures will plunge this afternoon as well as north winds pick up to 20 -30 mph with possible gusts to 45 mph.  It may start to warm up a little Thursday afternoon and Friday, but it looks like another cool down may happen this weekend.  I'll keep an eye on this situation and send updates if anything significant changes.

WeatherWatcher: Winter storm warning Tuesday

Current conditions January 17, 2012, at 9:48am:

  • Temperature: 32.2ºF
  • Snow depth: 0.5 inches. (Trace)
  • Humidity: 100%
  • Barometer: 29.294 in Hg, trend: steady
  • Weather: Overcast, light snow.

National Weather Service of Seattle has upgraded the winter storm watch to a winter storm warning for the greater Seattle area, including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, as of 5am Tuesday morning, January 17, 2012.

  • A winter weather advisory is currently in effect until 4pm this afternoon.
  • A winter storm warning has been issued for tonight at Midnight PST until Wednesday night.

Winter weather advisory today: Snow accumulations of another 1-2 inches is possible in showers.

Winter storm warning late tonight - Thursday morning or so: A strong Pacific storm is moving by just to the south of us Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday and Thursday. The storm is now tracking far enough south that the changeover to rain may not happen until Thursday afternoon, or maybe even later, or not at all. Forecast models are having many inconsistencies with the temperatures during this coming storm.

Bottom line:

  • 1-3 inches total today until after 4pm.
  • Tonight snow will be on the increase around Midnight.
  • 5-10 inches of new snow Wednesday, and some areas may get more.
  • With snow this heavy, power outages are possible, and hazardous travel conditions will be present.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until sometime on Thursday, meaning that water on the roadways now will start to freeze. Check for school closures as well tomorrow. I suspect the Shoreline Public School district will be closed. Please don't drive tomorrow unless you have to, stay safe, and keep warm!

WeatherWatcher: more storms on the way

At 10:17am this morning, January 16, 2012 the National Weather Service in Seattle has issued two Winter Storm Watches for the area including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

A winter storm watch means conditions are favorable for severe winter weather.

  • A a winter storm watch is usually an indication that a storm warning will follow if the expected conditions are imminent.
  • A winter storm warning is issued for the lowlands when 4 inches of snow or more is likely within a 12 hour period of time.

Winter storm watch #1 in effect from late Tonight through Tuesday afternoon.
Winter storm watch #2 in effect from late Tuesday night through Wednesday night.

Winter storm watch #1 is in effect from late tonight through Tuesday afternoon. (No specific time is given for watches.)
Snow accumulations of 3-7 inches are possible tonight into Tuesday. This is due to a second Arctic front that will push south through the Puget Sound region tonight.

Winter storm watch #2 has been issued for late Tuesday night, through Wednesday evening, Accumulation amounts are not predicted yet, however, they expect them to be the most significant of this entire week. Wide spread power outages are expected with this Wednesday storm. It is a very potent and moist Pacific storm, so winds are also possible. A changeover to rain is expected with this storm Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, depending on the storm track.

Further ahead:
Looks inconsistent still, however more and more forecasters are pointing to another plunge into freezing winter weather by Saturday. I'll continue to provide updates as the latest winter storms develop.

Coffee with a Friend: Brown's Cafe

Brown's Coffee has closed but Neil Brown continues roasting coffee and selling it online.

Vicki Michels is a woman on a mission - and that mission is to find every coffee shop in the area where you can get a good cup of coffee and sit down to enjoy it with a friend. She has consumed many mocha mint non-fat sugar-free lattes and raspberry muffins in search of information to share with our readers.

By Vicki Michels

This is a warm, friendly little shop that roasts their own coffee and serves great food.

The big draw here is probably the food. They serve a full menu for breakfast and lunch, including Eggs Benedict with a proper hollandaise sauce, and home-made corned beef. The sandwich chef won “best sandwich” prize in Seattle when owned his own shop in the University District.

There are the usual baked goods, lattes, teas and coffees. They roast their own: see the large roaster prominent in the middle of the room! Fresh coffee is for sale by the pound. The owner takes great interest and pride in his place.

Family breakfast at Brown's

I talked to a woman with three kids (niece and two nephews, she said) devouring breakfast. She’d eaten there once, and was so impressed she brought more family. (Mumbled spontaneous editorial comment from one boy: "mm, mm, mm, mm, UMMM!)

There is a small stage, with piano. But it is not used. Apparently the noise is a problem for the other tenants in the building.

HOURS:

Open - Mon-Fri 7 a.m, Saturday 8 a.m., Sunday 9 a.m.
Lunch - served all day, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Close - 5:00 p.m. every day

FOOD:

Great breakfasts, yummy lunches, and snacks and baked goods. Coffee drinks are served, along with teas, juices, soft drinks, and the usual array of bottled beverages.

Owner Neal Brown is in the middle of the process of getting a license to serve beer and wine. Then he plans to stay open for dinner and expand the menu.

PARKING:

Big drawback: Parking is terrible! There are maybe six spaces. Adjacent storefronts have posted parking for only their own clients. I cheated and parked in a lot belonging to someone else. Even street-side parking is limited, but can be found if you don’t mind walking a block.

Tables and chairs come in all sizes

SEATING:

There are a couple of booths along the window, perhaps ten tables. This is not a large place, and is generally quite busy. There are folding chairs available for additional seating if you need more.

COMPUTER/INTERNET:

There is free WiFi access, so of course you can bring your own computer.

In general, I look forward to returning here some morning for a yummy breakfast with a special latte!
