Shoreline man reports fictitious home invasion robbery to 911

Thursday, December 22, 2011

An 18 year old Shoreline man was booked into jail this morning after detectives discovered that he lied when he called 911 to report that he’d been the victim of a home invasion robbery.

On December 21, 2011, shortly after 3:00 pm, the Shoreline man called 911 to report that two masked men forced their way into his aunt’s home where he’d been staying. Once inside, the men ordered him to the ground at gun point and then proceeded to burglarize the home. Prior to leaving, the “suspects” forced him into a chair where he was bound and gagged.

Shoreline Police and the King County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes responded to the 911 call. As a result of their investigation they found that the man had pawned his aunt’s property and then used the robbery story to explain the theft.

The suspect was booked into jail for investigation of false reporting and theft.

WeatherWatcher: Happy Winter Solstice - winter officially starts

Happy winter Solstice! Winter officially started at Wednesday December 21, 2011 at 9:31 PM. December 22nd 2011 is the first full day of winter. December 22, 2011 with Sunrise: 7:55AM, and Sunset: 4:18PM, is the shortest day of the year.

ENSO status: La Niña Advisory

  • Winter outlook: Colder and Wetter than average.
  • January may spend most of the time under a brutal cold snap.
  • Winter weather tips/prepare for the worst, there's a good chance it will be harsh.

Current ENSO status as of December 8th, 2011 is La Niña Advisory
During November 2011, a weak to moderate La Niña has been present, as observed from ocean sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean and the overall convention patterns over the equatorial Pacific Ocean. A weak to moderate La Niña is expected to continue for the rest of the 2011-2012 winter season. In general, continued colder than normal weather, and soon to be wetter than normal as well until March 2012.

What does this mean for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park?
I hope everyone enjoyed our impressive and unusual dry spell for December 2011, this is going down as one of the driest Decembers on record. We are much colder than our average temperatures for this time of year, December has averaged almost 5°F colder than normal. However, this is not the pattern that will continue into January and February 2012.

We will maintain the colder than normal weather, but we will add storms to it as well bringing higher than normal precipitation. I use the word precipitation instead of rain, because a good portion of it could fall in the form of snow.

January - the near long range
Some indications are now hinting at a significant and lasting snow/Arctic event for us around or after January 5, 2012. This could last up to a whole month from what some of the long range models and meteorologists are predicting.

Here's how it's expected to play out. Starting on Christmas Day, (December 25th) the storm track is going to strengthen and flow right into Western Washington, bringing us a series of storms. From Christmas Day beyond New Years Day and into January 5th or 6th we may have several wind events.

Strong Pacific storms are expected to blow through one after another with rain and wind at times. Meanwhile a strong, brutal, cold air mass is looking to develop over British Columbia. After January 6th or so, the Pacific storm track is going to nudge a little further south of Washington. As lows pass by to the south, they will pull the cold air down into Western Washington. This could result in a significant snow event and brutal cold. The good news is, it will probably be our only Arctic outbreak this winter.

Carl's Winter preparation tips

  • Make sure all outdoor water fixtures are correctly insulated.
  • Have flashlights in places you can find in the dark, with spare batteries. It's a good idea to keep a working flashlight in every room.
  • Have a means of cooking food without electricity on hand, such as a camping stove.
  • Keep enough bottled water on hand to last at least 3 days for you and your family, including your pets.
  • Never operate any camping stove, gas heaters, generators, or any other CO and CO2 emitting devices that run on fuels inside a house, shed, or garage. CO gas is odorless, and colorless and can kill. Most deaths during power outages are caused by CO poisoning.
  • And finally, check out Take Winter By Storm for winter weather preparedness tips and resources for Western Washington.

Bastyr University adds Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology

Bastyr University will add a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree program to its curriculum for fall 2012.

“Our new program is different from most other counseling psychology programs in that it focuses on whole-person health — body, mind and spirit — allowing graduates the opportunity to find careers in private practice or integrative settings,” said Program Director Charles Smith, PhD. “Another difference is that our classes will be offered on weekends to accommodate both working professionals and traditional students who desire an alternate schedule.”

Students who graduate with this degree from Bastyr University will be eligible for licensure as mental health counselors (LMHC). According to statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, mental health jobs are expected to grow by 24 percent between now and 2018, indicating tremendous growth potential in this field and a strong need for qualified and licensed mental health professionals to get their training now.

“This new master’s program is just the latest example of the growth of Bastyr University, which continues to add academic curricula that will help us achieve our mission,” said Bastyr University President Daniel K. Church, PhD. “2012 promises to be a wonderful year for our institution as we open a new campus in San Diego and secure our place as the nation’s leader in natural health arts and sciences.”

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program is set to begin next fall with plans to accept approximately 10 students in the inaugural class. For more information, email or phone Bastyr University Admissions Office 425-602-3322.

Local voters favored liquor privatization initiative by a slightly smaller margin than State as a whole

By Evan Smith
Contributing Writer

Local voters joined the rest of the State in approving the liquor-privatization initiative on the Nov. 8 general-election ballot.

Voters in Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and the rest of the King County portion of the 32nd Legislative District approved Initiative 1183 by a 57 percent to 43 percent margin, according to figures that the secretary of state’s office released Tuesday.

That’s a slightly smaller margin than the statewide approval rate of 59 percent to 41 percent. The King County average matched the statewide average of 59 percent to 41 percent.

The initiative will close State=run liquor stores and allow liquor sales at large retail stores.

Frank Halferty, band director and music department head at Einstein Middle School in Shoreline, has been elected to the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) Hall of Fame.

The Washington Music Educators Association is the largest arts organization in the state, and represents more than 2,000 music teachers in the state of Washington.

In 1996, WMEA established the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame, to honor outstanding music teachers who have shown a long-time contribution to music in the state.

Criteria include excellence in teaching, a significant contribution to music beyond the classroom, and work done in a number of ways at the state and regional level. Hall of Fame nominees must also have brought about substantial improvements in the educational process, and have contributed significantly to the betterment of the profession through exemplary service. The award honors not just great teaching, but also acknowledges many contributions that recipients have made to the cause of music education throughout the state.

Frank Halferty, WMEA Hall of Fame
Halferty, himself a graduate of Shoreline High School, joins Einstein and Shorewood orchestral music director and WMEA president-elect Dan Wing in the Hall. John Law, Neil Lieurance, and Ken Noreen, retired Shoreline School District music teachers, are also in the Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held February 17, 2012 in Yakima, during the WMEA conference.

Halferty has taught at Einstein since 1993 and serves as the District Music Coordinator. He holds two Bachelor of Arts Degrees from Seattle Pacific University in Music Education and Music Theory and Literature. He received a Master of Music in Composition from New Mexico State University.

Currently Halferty has more than 200 compositions and arrangements in print, most recently the Folk Song Trilogy performed by the Shoreline School District Honor Choir in its recent concert with the Cascade Youth Symphony at Benaroya Hall.  (See previous story)

Halferty has 36 years of experience teaching instrumental music at all levels, and has held numerous positions as director of choirs and community groups. He is the recipient of 14 ASCAP awards, Outstanding Educator Awards in both the Shoreline and Lake Washington School Districts, and the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Sno-King Music Educators Association. Halferty has also served as a board member of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. He maintains a busy schedule composing, fulfilling music administration and teaching duties, guest conducting, and adjudicating music festivals.
