Coffee with a friend: Richmond Beach Coffee Company

Vicki Michels is a woman on a mission - and that mission is to find every coffee shop in the area where you can get a good cup of coffee and sit down to enjoy it with a friend. She has consumed many mocha mint non-fat sugar-free lattes and raspberry muffins in search of information to share with our readers.

I'm looking for any excuse to come back here! This shop is in a delightfully converted garage (as are many coffee shops, I discover. I believe this used to be Earl's Auto Repair.) The shop has been a neighborhood fave for over eight years. (They are at the northeast corner of the intersection, off the street behind an airy fence.)

To me, the primary draw here is the best panini I've ever had. It was 11 a.m., and I bypassed the baked goods and tried a grilled ham with cheese luncheon sandwich. With a cup of homemade split pea soup… Heaven!

There is a great variety of food and drinks. (I don’t know if you can read the board, from my fuzzy photography.)

Newspapers, toys, and games are available, and it appears to be a community gathering place; many customers are greeted on a first-name basis. The coffee shop takes pride in welcoming folks from the local Veterans' Center.

Customers chat while waiting in line.

During the warm summer, the old "garage" door is lifted to provide open-air ambiance, and people can dine outside. Apparently there is also drive-thru service.

On perhaps two weekends per month, during the summer, there are Music Nights. Check the website for performance artists and dates. If you yourself are interested in performing, please call the number listed above for information.

HOURS:

Open – Mon-Fri 6 a.m.; Sat-Sun 7 a.m.

Close - Mon-Thu, Sun. 6 p.m.; Fri, Sat 7 p.m.

But on music nights, will stay open until 10 p.m.

FOOD:

Sandwiches, both hot and cold; panini; muffins, chips, cookies, cakes; crepes! Drinks are everything you might want, from latte, coffee, tea, bubble tea, and espresso, to soft drinks, juices, beer and wine.

PARKING:

There are at least 12 spaces, and more can be found in neighboring areas.

A cozy seating area. Photo by Vicki Michels

SEATING:

Virtually everything is available for your comfort. Perhaps six inside tables have chairs or benches, and in various places there are sofas, loveseats, overstuffed chairs and settees for lounging, reading, and conversation. A counter with around eight stools runs along inside the "garage" doors, which will be opened up in the summer for fresh air. Outside there are a few tables and chairs for use in good weather.

COMPUTER/INTERNET:

Wi-Fi is free, and each stool/station on the counter has an outlet. There is one computer available, free for customers to use.

When I asked her, the manager expressed some apprehension about the Point Wells project. She hopes it will bring in business, but fears that it might instead destroy the chummy neighborhood.

Shorewood teacher honored as top photography educator

Sally Tonkin, photography and English teacher at Shorewood High School, received the Honored Educator award recently at the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) Northwest Regional Conference. This was the first time this award has gone to a high school educator.

Tonkin was nominated by Walter Bodle, the founder of a non-profit organization for at-risk kids called Youth in Focus. She is a member of the board at YIF, which is an after-school program that uses intensive photography training as a tool to help disadvantaged teens develop personal voice, positive identity, social skills and artistic skills.

"Sally Tonkin is an exceptional, inspiring and motivational educator," her nomination read in part. She believes that the creation of a photograph is a transformative experience: it takes the photographer outside of him or herself and forces them to interact with the wider world. But, at the same time, it compels the photographer to look inward and examine and express how they see the world."

Sally has taught art, English and photography at Shorewood High School since 1995, following a career as a newspaper photographer. She was selected by the state as one of four teachers to develop standards for high school photography classes. She received an Adobe Fellowship for skills using software programs to help students see their creative concepts realized. Her students have consistently placed in the top three in the Washington State High School Photography Contest, and many have gone on to study photography in college.

SPE, a national nonprofit organization, provides not only a forum for the discussion of photography as a means of creative expression and cultural insight, but nurtures its development through teaching, criticism, and scholarship. To view Sally's photography work, see her website

Arson fire chars exterior door at Shorecrest High School

Shoreline Fire, Shoreline Police, and the King County Fire Investigation Unit are looking into an intentionally-set fire that charred an exterior door at Shorecrest High School overnight.

Shorecrest officials contacted the Shoreline Fire Marshal, and an investigation is underway.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Arson Alarm at 1-800-55-ARSON.

At this time, there is no known connection between the Shorecrest High School incident and an intentionally-set fire that occurred Sunday evening at NE 165th and 5th Avenue NE.

Redistricting plan would take Lake Forest Park out of 32nd Legislative District, bring in Lynnwood and northwest Seattle

By Evan Smith
Contributing Writer

The State’s redistricting plan would take Lake Forest Park out of the 32nd Legislative District and bring Lynnwood and part of northwest Seattle into the District according to maps released Friday.

The District now includes Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and part of Kirkland in King County, and Woodway, south Edmonds and nearby unincorporated areas of south Snohomish County.

The redistricting plan would bring part of northwest Seattle and the whole City of Lynnwood into the District, and move Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Woodinville and parts of Bothell and Kirkland into the 46th District, with northeast Seattle.

The plan released Saturday would take Democratic State Rep, Ruth Kagi out of the 32nd District, but Kagi told the Everett Herald Thursday that she planned to sell her Lake Forest Park home and move to somewhere within the District’s new boundaries. That way she would be able to run in the 2012 election for an eighth two-year term representing the District.

The State redistricting commission plan released Thursday includes newly drawn legislative districts in Western Washington. The commission plans to release plans for legislative districts in Eastern and Central Washington and a plan for Congressional districts in a few days.

By law the commission must complete its work by the end of December, If not, the State Supreme Court redraws the boundaries.

The commission has members chosen by the State House and Senate majority and minority caucuses. The four party appointees choose a non-partisan, non-voting chairman.

The new parts of the 32nd District, like the old parts, consistently elect Democrats, northwest Seattle overwhelmingly, Lynnwood by smaller margins.

WeatherWatcher: Normal for next week - all wet

The week ahead
Slowly transitioning back to the wetter normal weather we typically have in December. There will be partly sunny days, cloudy days, and light rainy days mixed in through the Christmas holiday. Chances of a white Christmas this year are very near 0%.

Last weeks highlights - December 10-16, 2011
We continue to be dominated by this ridge of high pressure, a few fronts have managed to break through it, mixing some of the stagnant air and producing some light rain. We've received more rain up here than Seatac due to small convergance showers that developed behind a couple of the fronts.

Currently we are having one of the driest Decembers so far on record. I'll explain more on that on my next ENSO status report.

Last week's data

  • High temperature: 47.1°F (Friday)
  • Low temperature: 27.0°F (Monday night/Tuesday morning)
  • Rainiest day: 0.26 inches (Sunday)
  • Total rainfall: 0.30 inches
  • Warmest day: 43.8°F (Friday)
  • Coldest day: 30.5°F (Monday)
  • Average temperature: 36.5°F

Daily average temperature graph compared to 2010

Warmest and coldest days are based on average temperature of the entire day, starting at midnight. All other averages are based on the whole week. All weather data unless otherwise noted is sourced from Carl's Shoreline Weather station.
