Local musician dishes out jazz-free music

Paul Kemmish
By Cindy Tien

Bassist, conductor, and composer, Paul Kemmish brings a mixture of sax-jazz to the stage in a collaborated Big Band called PK and What Army?

Simply stated, PK and What Army consists of Paul Kemmish, and whomever he collaborates at the time. Initially founded in 2001 for Kemmish to promote his collaborations and compositions with other Seattle artists, PK decided to widen and open his idea to include 25-30 other band members. Rehearsals are rare, as much of the music is given to structure itself as it proceeds.

Paul Kemmish
Paul Kemmish grew up in Shoreline attending Shorewood High School, class of ’88. He still keeps in touch with his first band mates, and has reconnected with old classmates through his Facebook fan page. Kemmish plays in a band with Shorewood alumni Byron Vannoy (drums, MetriLodic), and for years with a band called Dasrut, with another alumni drummer, Davis Martin.

Rockin Teenage Combo was Kemmel’s first popular band in Seattle, which celebrated its 15-year anniversary in August.

Besides playing with PK and What Army? Kemmish also has been working on a solo upright bass concept. His own musical talents and playing is based on the elements of "gestures, glances, and asides." Kemmish’s music explores a mixture of intensity levels, volume, and dynamic control, in which the magic of his music can be felt through the audience and on stage.

“You don’t need eyes to make music, sometimes we make better musical decisions when we’re not burdened with out visual cues, then you make decisions based on what you see, not on what you hear” PK stated.

PK and What Army? is influenced by Mingus, Coltrane, Sun Ra, William, and Peter Brotzman to name a few. Performing sporadically around Seattle, experience some of PK and What Army’s finest in free jazz with their upcoming gigs, listed below. This past year Kemmish finished a two-year world tour with Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam.

Current collaborations:

  • Kemmish joined Harmonica Poket, a children’s group in which he performs with them on doublebass. You can find him in all three of their CDs, and their next performance on February 25, 2012.
  • Eric MetriLodic is a forward-thinking and all-improvised groove that features Barber on the sax, synth, and iPad. Byron Vannoy on drums, and Kemmish on electric bass. Several videos from recent shows can be found on YouTube.
  • Figeater is a time-based performance ensemble led by Beth Fleenor. Vocals and woodwinds by Fleenor, Jeff Huston on guitor, Tom Zgonc on drums, and Kemmish on doublebass.

Upcoming shows include:

  • THU 12/22 w/Jessica Lurie at Shadowland 4458 California Ave SW 8pm 21 and over
  • THU 12/15 w/Eric Barber's MetriLodic at The Mars Bar 609 Eastlake Ave E 9pm 21 and over
  • SAT 12/24 w/Beth Fleenor at Alhambra 1st and Pine 1-5pm All-ages

Sound Transit to narrow alternatives to light rail along I-5 to Lynnwood

This Thursday, December 15, 2011, the Sound Transit Board of Directors will consider a motion to narrow the range of North Corridor Transit Project alternatives to light rail along Interstate 5 between Northgate and Lynnwood.

The North Corridor Transit Project is part of the Sound Transit 2 Plan approved by voters in 2008. This action follows completion of a recent Alternatives Analysis and public comment on results during environmental scoping in October 2011. Environmental “scoping” provided an opportunity for the public and agencies to learn about and provide comments on the project at the start of environmental review, called an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The motion identifies the alternatives to be examined in the project’s EIS and excludes from further study other worse performing and less promising alternatives. The Alternatives Analysis concluded that extending light rail generally along the I-5 corridor would have the greatest benefits, and that bus rapid transit alternatives and light rail alternatives in other corridors such as SR 99, 15th Avenue NE or Lake City Way would have fewer benefits and/or higher costs.

A summary of environmental scoping input and analysis to date is on the project website.

Third trip to Haiti for Shoreline firefighter

Monday, December 12, 2011

Eric Adman, right, with students from EMT class in Haiti

Shoreline Firefighter and new Northshore Fire Commissioner Eric Adman has taken three trips to Haiti since their devastating earthquake, to teach emergency medical response classes

By Eric Adman

In October, I returned from my third trip to Haiti this year. If you had asked me if I ever thought I would go to Haiti once, let alone three times, I would have said no way. This year I went in January to do relief work in a clinic (see story), in August to help teach Port-Au-Prince Medic One class #1, and in September to attend the graduation of those new EMT's.

The class was a total success, despite all the usual obstacles of Haiti, which included heat, humidity, chickens and goats underfoot, and tropical storms blowing in to our open-air outdoor classroom. Not to mention we taught in English, which is not their first language. We finished up with some incredible Mass Casualty (MCI) training drills, and a graduation ceremony which featured many of the well-connected in Haiti, as well as lots of friends and family. Following up on the class, we are coordinating with various entities in Haiti to help develop a better EMS system, and plan to offer at least two more EMT classes there next year.

I stayed at the EMPACT Haiti house as usual. That house is great - not necessarily four star comfort, but you really get to live with the local people there. To get there, you ride up the "road", as steep and bad as any jeep trail, while riding in the back of a Toyota pickup ("tap-tap") on a hard wooden bench seat. Everyone waves and says hello as you pass through the neighborhood! Every other person seems to be related to Hubermann, one of our translators and EMT graduates. You also get three meals a day of Haitian food courtesy of "Madame", who cooks for us. Spaghetti with sauteed onions ("ZOH-YOH") and salami, plus mayo, ketchup, and hot sauce, is a typical breakfast!

Unusual for my trips, I actually had time to do some sightseeing during my third stay. We got out of town a couple of times - once to a resort north of Port-Au-Prince on the coast, and once to a town to the south called Jacmel. Jacmel is considered a center of art in Haiti, and has beautiful old buildings reminiscent of the French Quarter in New Orleans. While in Jacmel we also got to swim in a series of pools fed by waterfalls up in the nearby mountains - beautiful, and not what you expect. Haiti is still not most people's first choice for tourism, but they are making efforts and there are some nice places.

Back in Port-Au-Prince, I spent a day with a Haitian friend of mine, Windy. Windy has started a school in a slum area that he grew up in, Cite Soleil. I got smuggled into Cite Soleil in the most beat-up tap-tap I'd ever been in, to see the school. I felt like a celebrity. The children sang me a welcome song and everyone was excited to meet me. The school is a little oasis, in the poorest, most bombed-out looking area, with garbage and puddles of unknown green water around. Little kids who saw me pointed and yelled "Blan! Blan!" (white person), which made me laugh.

Windy and his brother are doing a very professional, organized job. They have started a school where there was none. They are teaching 50 first-graders, paying a director, two teachers, a cook, feeding the kids, paying rent on the church - for under $5000 for a year. This is funded by contributions from the US - here is where you can learn more about it and donate

Later that day, Windy and I struggled through Haitian traffic and visited an orphanage started by a friend of his, Pastor Sila Caduc. Pastor Sila is another example of the unbelievable selflessness you find so often in Haiti. The pastor and his wife have dedicated their life to taking care of 60 children, ranging in age from 1 to 17. While the kids live in a building, he and his wife stay in a tent. They, too exist on a shoestring budget & can use any help we can send.

People ask me each time if things are changing in Haiti. That is a hard question to answer, but I can say that each time I go I meet more people who are working on good things. I guess I would have to say things are slowly getting better, but there is a very long way to go.

I also have to admit what a tremendous sense of relief and enjoyment I feel every time I come back to the good old clean and organized USA. Comfy beds, nice hot showers, clean water from the tap. No pervasive smell of sewage, burning garbage, smog, etc. Driving on roads without massive potholes everywhere. Despite what you may hear on the news, it is pretty darn good here.

KCTS 9 looking for people to do restaurant reviews on a new TV show

"Check, Please!" - New local series premieres Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.

Everyone has their opinion on the best sushi bar, burger joint or hidden-away neighborhood gem. Now Northwest eaters will have a chance to see how their favorite local spot stacks up on Check, Please! Northwest, a new half-hour KCTS 9 series premiering on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.

Already one of the top-rated locally produced series in five other cities including Chicago and San Francisco, Check, Please! is a fun, lively, unpredictable showcase for Seattle and the Northwest's vibrant food scene, featuring some of the world's best chefs and a bounty of locally grown foods.

Do you love good food and good conversation? Apply to be a guest on the first season of Check, Please! Northwest.

Every week, Check, Please! brings three guests from all walks of life together to hash it out over their favorite restaurants, from the down-homiest diners to the fanciest four-star destinations. Each guest picks one restaurant for the other two reviewers to visit anonymously. After sampling each other's recommendations, they reconvene on the show to discuss, dispute, and celebrate their dining experiences. At the end of each show, restaurants are rated based on the panel’s discussion.
"Our viewers are going to love this series," says producer Nicole Metcalf. "Seattle is a food lover's paradise. Check, Please! lets regular diners take center stage to share and defend their opinions on the best food our city has to offer."

“I love Seattle,” says series creator and executive producer David Manilow from Chicago, where Check, Please! is entering its fifth season as the highest-rated local program on public television station WTTW. “The city has a wonderful blend of neighborhood favorites and cutting-edge restaurants. I'm thrilled that we can bring an authentic, diverse and mouth-watering look at this thriving food scene every week.”

“We strongly believe that this program will quickly become one of the most popular locally produced series in the Pacific Northwest, once again reinforcing the value that KCTS provides the viewing public,” says Ron Sevart, CEO of the Space Needle, the main sponsor of Check, Please! Northwest. “As the icon of Seattle, we are always looking at new ways to continue to show off the best that our city has to offer. This program will become a regular must-see show for food lovers at every level."

If you get an interview for the show, be sure to tell us about it.

Audience members can choose to have performers sing the carol of their choice or can choose to perform the song solo or as a duet with one of SMT’s regulars in front of a supportive audience…the perfect opportunity for everyone’s talent to be recognized.

Also included in this casual, all-ages party is an array of wonderful silent auction items.

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE . Parking is free and plentiful with several excellent restaurants located nearby on Sand Point Way and University Village. Festive VIP tables on the stage are $25 per seat, house seating is $10 per seat or $20 for families. Tickets can be purchased online  or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.
