Shoreline teachers earn National Board Certifications

From left, Shorewood teachers Mikael Christensen, Clark Youmans, Alisan Giesy and Andrew Bagley have earned their National Board Certifications.

Ten Shoreline School District teachers have received their certifications from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The teachers and schools are:
  • Jennifer Altena, Syre
  • Andrew Bagley, Shorewood
  • Cristi Camp, Einstein
  • Mikael Christensen, Shorewood
  • Alisan Giesy, Shorewood
  • Roberta Ruark, Shorecrest
  • Brynne Saskor, Shorecrest
  • Marybeth Scherf, Lake Forest Park
  • Clark Youmans, Shorewood
  • Cheryl Zahajiko, Lake Forest Park

With this latest announcement, Shoreline now has a total of 66 board-certified teachers currently working in the District. Numbers released by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards show that Washington has the second-most new NBCTs (945), behind only North Carolina, and is fourth overall in the total number of NBCTs (6,242). This achievement brings the total number of teachers certified nationwide to nearly 100,000.

The national certification process takes a minimum of 18 months. Teachers must demonstrate in their four-part portfolio a deep understanding and application of the national standards that are in place for their field of teaching. A national panel of peers then assesses the portfolio. Teachers also take a six-part examination in their content area.

The Shoreline School District supports the National Board Certification program by paying half of the registration fee. Those who complete the program receive a yearly salary bonus approved by the Legislature. Teachers attaining certification provide 25 hours of service either teaching professional development classes, supporting or mentoring colleagues, or working on projects.

Created in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonpartisan and nonprofit organization devoted to advancing the quality of teaching and learning. For more information, visit the NBPTS website.

Washington state continues to place near the top of the country in National Board Certified teachers.
Numbers released today by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards show that Washington has the second-most new NBCTs (945), behind only North Carolina, and is fourth overall in the total number of NBCTs (6,242).
“The National Board program is one of our most successful,” said Randy Dorn, state superintendent of public instruction. “Each year Washington scores very well nationally in the number of new Board-certified teachers. Administrators, legislators and parents all understand just how important certification is. It makes better teachers, which in turn helps all of our students.”

Rep. Kagi expects Legislature to cut a half billion dollars from current budget within a week

By Evan Smith
Contributing Writer

Democratic State Rep. Ruth Kagi says she expects the Legislature to cut a half billion dollars from the current budget within a week.

Legislators are starting the third week of the special session that Gov. Christine Gregoire called to cut $2 billion from the 2010-12 budget.

Kagi is a member of the House ways and means committee.

She said Saturday that the committee held hearings last week on bills needed to implement the Governor's proposed supplemental budget. She said that many laws need to be changed to make the level of cuts proposed.

While Kagi and other budget writers work in Olympia, other legislators stay at home until the budget-writing committees have something for them to act on.

Kagi said that she expects the Legislature to pass an "early action" budget this week that will cut about a half a billion dollars that can be agreed upon now.

“I am hoping that we will be able to pass the budget next week and then work on the more challenging cuts when we come back in January,” she said.

She also said that she hopes the Legislature will be able to put a revenue package on the ballot.

“If we don't, I don't think we will be able to pass a budget” she said. “The cuts will just be too deep and the consequences too disastrous.”

Kagi represents Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Woodway, south Edmonds and the rest of the 32nd Legislative District.

Thank you Nancy Frey

Ros Bird, Nancy Frey, Fred Wong.  Photo by Steven H. Robinson

The community gathered at a reception on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, to honor retiring Arts Council Director Nancy Frey, who is retiring after almost five years with the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council.

Shoreline Deputy Mayor Will Hall and Bob Pfeiffer, Arts Board President, spoke of Nancy's accomplishments at the Shoreline - LFP Arts Council.

“It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council,” said Ms. Frey. “With its terrific board of directors and staff, this organization plays an extremely important role in the local community and truly fulfills its mission to make the arts accessible to all.
"After 23 years as an administrator in nonprofit arts organizations, I plan to pursue some contract grant writing, travel, and focus on my own creative writing. I hope I have helped to advance the Arts Council and wish it all the best in its future endeavors.”

The reception also served to welcome new director Fred Wong, who joins Shoreline - LFP after almost a decade as Arts Director in Lynnwood.

He shared his philosophy of art as part of life.  “Another aspect of community arts is that the arts solve community problems, whether related to community building, civic engagement, education, or crime prevention. I believe strongly that arts organizations, artists, need to partner with non-arts groups to find creative solutions to community needs. I believe a community that strongly supports the arts will be a strong community.”

Ros Bird was the original director of the Arts Council, instrumental in molding and shaping the organization into a professional arts group.

Two Shorewood gymnasts receive local scholarship

Dick and Diane Chapman, parents of Shorewood Alumnus Doriane Chapman (Gunnels) have been supportive of high school gymnastics since their daughter started at Shorewood in 1992. Over the last 19 years their support has not wavered.

Shorewood Gymnastics Coach Susan Riley wanted to honor the Chapmans for their long time support of the Shorewood Gymnastics program by naming a scholarship after them. Dick and Diane were honored and in turn wanted to help fund the scholarship.

Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong

This year two Shorewood gymnasts, Seniors Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong were selected to receive the first annual Dick and Diane Chapman-Shorewood Gymnastics Senior Scholarship. Riley and Wong will each receive $500 towards their college education, donated by the Chapmans.

Sadly, Dick passed away on November 25, 2011 and was not able to take part in the selection of this year’s winners. Diane and Doriane made the selection in Dick’s honor.

The goal of the scholarship is to honor Shorewood senior gymnasts that display leadership, school athletic involvement and character.

Kyla Riley was selected for her leadership (three years gymnastics captain, 1 year diving captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, four years diving and two years Drill Team), and her character as explained by Shorewood Math Teacher Corrie Crowder in her letter of recommendation for Kyla.
“For a painfully long time, Kyla had health issues that made it difficult for her to come to school. Amazingly, Kyla stayed on top of her academics and athletics…During this time she demonstrated extraordinary strength of character and determination. She always worked hard and never gave up.” Kyla plans to study Kinesiology at Vangaurd University.
Kristie Wong was selected for her leadership (cheer captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, two years cheer), working two jobs, and her character as described by Shorewood Science Teacher Nathan Davis in his letter of recommendation for Kristie.
“Kristie’s academic’s school involvement and interpersonal skills will assure her success in life.”
Kristie hopes to attend the University of Washington and study Medicine.

Jazz up your winter! Please join us on January 21, 2012, for Jazz It Up!, the Arts Council’s annual Arts Scholarship Program fundraiser, at the Shoreline Center Auditorium.

More on Gary Smulyan

Gifted multi-instrumentalist Gary Smulyan started his music career by first learning alto saxophone during his teenage years on Long Island. Today he is critically acclaimed across the board and recognized as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. His playing is marked by an aggressive rhythmic sense, an intelligent and creative harmonic approach, and, perhaps most importantly, a strong and incisive wit.

Gradually establishing himself, the talented Smulyan was asked to share the stage and the recording studio with a stunning potpourri of luminaries, including trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Stan Getz, pianist Chick Corea, timbales king Tito Puente, and R&B/Blues and soul icons Ray Charles, B.B. King and Diana Ross.
  • Voted Baritone Saxophonist of the Year in the 2011 Downbeat Critics Poll.
  • Winner of the 2011 Jazz Times Readers and Critics Polls for Baritone Saxophonist of the year.
  • Gary's new CD, "Smul's Paradise", will be released in early 2012 on the Capri label, featuring Mike LeDonne (organ), Peter Bernstein (guitar), and Kenny Washington (drums).

For the Birds: Short-eared Owls—common day-hunters

Short-eared Owl
By Christine Southwick

If you are in the Skagit area in the winter, hunting for Snowy Owls and other wintering raptors, chances are you will see a medium-sized brown owl hunting during our grey winter days. It is probably a Short-eared Owl. Since they use open land, it is common to find them over fields, and even over freeway mediums.

Short-eared Owl landing on fence post

Although it can, at first glance, be confused with the Northern Harrier because it is flying low to the ground, and maybe even hovering before pouncing on its prey, the floppy moth-like wing beat, and brown rump are great clues that it is a Short-eared Owl. Both species hold their wings at a slight dihedral (“V” shape), but, at least to me, the wings of the Short-eared Owl look overly-long for the size of its body, even though the wings of the N. Harrier average slightly longer. You may well see a confrontation between a N. Harrier and a Short-eared Owl hunting the same area, since they eat the same prey. N Harriers may attempt to steal the Short-eared Owl’s meal.

These owls help keep the vermin population down, eating voles, shrews, mice, rabbits, pocket gophers, and along the coast, some shorebirds. They locate their prey by ear, usually while in flight, although sometimes you will see them perched on a fence post listening.

The nest is located in open areas and is simply a scrape on the ground lined with grasses with usually six to eight eggs. The male brings food for the brooding female. The nestlings usually leave the nest 12-18 days after hatching, but can’t fly for another two weeks. Fledglings can hunt on their own within one to two weeks after their first flight, but family groups often roost together for a while.

Short-eared Owl wings in dihedral

Unlike many owls, the Short-eared Owl is usually a quiet owl, with visual cues being readily used in open fields and daylight hunting. When defending their nest, they will bark, hiss or squeal. The male mating call has a steam-engine tempo of “voo-hoo-hoo”.

Habitat loss has greatly impacted our local Short-eared Owls. These owls, while still common in the winter, no longer breed in Western Washington where once they commonly nested. These owls need open land with prey species, and human expansion continues to shrink their preferred habitat.

So next time you are driving in open farmland on one of our grey dreary winter days, look for a Short-eared Owl skimming the fields listening for a tasty morsel. They will make a winter day bright again.

Christine Southwick is on the Board of the Puget Sound Bird Observatory and is their Winter Urban Color-banding Project Manager. She is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat Steward, having completed their forty hour class. We're happy that she's sharing her expertise with us about the birds in our backyards.

KING5.com: Shoreline man charged with rape, burglary, and assault

Saturday, December 10, 2011

From our News Partner KING5.com

A Shoreline man has been charged with rape, burglary and assault in Sunday’s rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Bail was increased to $1 million for 37-year-old Jesse R. Gonzales. He was charged Friday with first degree rape and first degree burglary with sexual motivation.

Because the alleged sexual assault involves a victim under the age of 15, King County prosecutors say a conviction would trigger a mandatory 25-year prison sentence. Gonzales could also end up spending the rest of his life in prison. A parole board has the authority to keep an inmate in prison for life for conviction on certain sex offenses.

"A person who would break into a home and rape a 12-year-old child has forfeited his right to live in a free society," said King County Proseutor Dan Satterberg. "There can be no mitigating circumstances, there should only be a prison cell and a life sentence."

The entire KING5 story here.

According to reporting by our News Partner The Seattle Times, the girl and her siblings were home alone while their mother worked.  Usually an uncle baby-sat but he had left early that night, and the mother was late coming home.

They said that Gonzales lived a block away but police do not know if he had been stalking the girl.

He entered the house through an unlocked front door and raped the girl multiple times before her mother returned home and scared him off.  He told police he had taken drugs and alcohol and was hallucinating.
